Like Houston I have another problem I could use some help on . I have the
latest apple TV and have had it working as it was designed to do but it was a
bit flaky. with dropouts and I am fairly certain it is lack of signal
strength. I have moved metal objects around the unit but still cannot get it
working reliably. I know I can take a ethernet cable to it but feel I am past
crawling through the roof.what other options are there in upping the signal
strength?

Hi Malcolm, you could locate a WiFi extender near to your AppleTV. Either an
Airport Express in extender mode (which I have) for the children's end of the
house or a purpose made extender - I'm sure Apple makes them but also Belkin,
Netgear et al make them too. These are simple plugins to a wall power point.

I went with an Ethernet connection for my AppleTV from the outset and it has
 always been good service.

Are you sure you have good data rate into your house? This can also be a
limitation on video streaming if it is poor.

Another option is to use data over power which basically uses your 240v
electrical cabling in the house to carry data as well. Placing one of these
next to the AppleTV might be a solution too.

Unfortunately Java is used so pervasively by many third party solutions that
it is difficult to live without it completely. The main danger is having it
turned on in your Web Browser, since this provides the vectors for the
nasties to come in from outside. Simply using it locally for a printer driver
 should be be safe.

 Hi Mac,

As I see it there are two issues here:

 1) what cable would physically connect your turntable to your computer
 2) if you make such a connection, will it do what you want (copy your
records tracks to your computer) or not - or might it even damage one or
 both of the devices.

 1) is easily answered - you just need a cable that has plugs which match the
sockets on each device - but maybe there is a good reason you can't easily
find/buy one - I mean, I could physically make a mains extension lead that
had a plug on each end - but it would be an extremely bad idea ;o)

You really need to address 2) first.

Traditionally you would get record tracks from an LP to the computer by
taking the audio output from your stereo system and connecting it into your
computers audio in port. This has been well covered before, so I won't go
into details except to note that the turntable output usually requires
pre-amplification and equalisation up to line level to give the computer
what it wants - which is why you would normally use the line-out socket of
your amplifier/stereo system (rather than the direct turntable output).

More recently, however, turntables have been produced aimed more at
transferring to computers, including ones with USB ports. There are,
however, different implementations of this. A couple of examples:

 1) This turntable http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=GE4056
outputs an audio signal via either standard RCA plugs or via usb. With this
approach you use a computer program (such as Audacity) to record the audio
to your computer. In this case, the turntable has a Type B USB port and is
connected to the computer via a standard Type A to Type B cable.

 2) This turntable http://dicksmith.com.au/product/AE2836/ does audio to
mp3 encoding within the turntable. The USB port would be a Type A port to
allow you to insert a usb drive. The turntable also has line-out ports - so
you could encode using your computer the traditional way.

From what you say, your turntable has digital output by a USB Type A port -
and so I believe it will have an onboard conversion to mp3 and will expect
to see a USB storage device at the port - which it will write the mp3 file
 to.

 I would suggest:

 A) If you are happy with the mp3 output, as encoded by the turntable, then
connect a usb drive to the turntable and encode away - you can always
transfer them to your computer later. Unless your turntable has specific
limits, you wouldn't need to use a thumb drive - you could use a more
spacious USB hard drive (though I would suggest an externally-powered drive
unless you know the turntable USB port can output enough power to run a
 portable HD)

 B) If you wish to have more control over the conversion (and provided your
turntable has audio line-out and your computer has audio line-in) feed the
audio to your computer and use suitable audio software to record/convert to
your preferences (see previous WAMUG posts re suitable software).

If you want a bit more info:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Host_and_Device_interface
_receptacles gives a good run-down on various aspects of USB, including the
different connector types and their use/purpose - you can see from their
 Cable plug table/matrix that a Type A to Type A cable is a non-standard
 configuration where:

 Non-standard
existing for specific proprietary purposes, and not interoperable with
 USB-IF compliant equipment.

A6: Correct. In fact, if you try this with an illegal A to A USB cable,
you'll short the two PCs' power supplies together, possibly destroying one
or both machines or causing a fire hazard. Even there were no danger to the
machines from the problem with two power supplies, there still wouldn't be
any way to get the two PCs talking to each other, since USB doesn't support
that particular kind of communication. A reasonably priced solution to
handle this need is the USB bridge.

 Hi Peter,

I was clearing our my Drafts Mailbox, and found I had started a reply to your
 query back in October :-(
You have probably found all the answer by now, but I'll post what I was going
 to reply anyway.

I don't think I would not recommend using BoB with a Time Capsule, I'll
 explain my reasons below.

On 14/10/2010, at 9:28 AM, Crisp, Peter wrote:

My ISP has a promotion on for their thing called BoB. I’m not quite sure
what it is (VOIP I think) but I wondered if I ever went to one of these BoB
things (and hence no longer a land line), whether the Time Capsule I have
will port into this and all Mac wireless access will still be in through the
 Time Capsule.

I'll first answer your query What is BoB? BoB’s an 802.11n router with an
 in-built ADSL2+ modem. To be specific, it’s a Belkin modem/router, with
shared branding between iiNet and Belkin. Wireless support is in the 2.4GHz
range only, and it’s a dual-radio router. Not a dual-band router. Instead of
getting a 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio, you instead get two 2.4GHz radios, one of
 which is disabled by default.

BoB’s also VoIP capable with PSTN passthrough, and up to two accounts can be
configured, although only via one provider. Not surprisingly, iiNet would
prefer that you choose it as the provider.

BoB is only a 10/100 (100Mbps) LAN Ethernet …. NOT 1Gbps that Time Capsule
 has.
BoB only uses 2.4GHz NOT 5GHz

1TB Time Capsule has a One Gigabit Ethernet WAN port for connecting a DSL or
 cable modem
Three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for connecting computers or network devices
USB port for connecting a USB printer or USB external hard drive
 802.11n wireless

Does anyone have this configuration and experiences please?

I don't know of anyone using BoB with a Time Capsule. The only way I can see
 to get this working.
Is to disable WiFi on BoB, and use the WiFi on the Time Capsule.

Connect BoB to the Time Capsule’s Ethernet WAN port (set the TC to Bridge
Mode so as not to get double NAT).
And Use the Time Capsule Dual Band for all your wireless needs (turn the BoB
 wireless OFF).

VoIP will / should still work when BoB wifi is turned off, VoIP does not run
 over wifi per se.

 Ronni

I have barely satisfactory download speeds much to the time. But when the

BigPond, they send the usual form letter, which includes the most
infuriating excuse for slow network speed. They cite user numbers as a
likely reason for a slow connection. Of course, they are correct, as I have
better speeds when the numbers thin out.

But … it's BigPond that signs up the numbers. It's BigPond that takes the

explain why I've got slow speeds. It's BigPond that controls those numbers,
 not me.

I maintain that the ISP must restrict the numbers if they are to meet their

I was the executive at a company of about 300 people and we had an even

One day our IT manager was complaining to me and saying that Macs were more
expensive, garbage and we should replace them with PCs. I was so pissed I
asked for an accounting of all IT costs associated with Macs and PCs.
The repair and maintenance costs for the PCs exceeded $200,000 AND the repair
costs for the Macs was one invoice for a hard drive replacement of about $150.
I told the IT manager that he had two choices. Replace all the PCs in the
building with Macs or loose his job.

 Hi All

I just received an email earlier this evening with some bad news.
Ken Houghton passed away on Tuesday 3rd August.
For those that knew him they will remember him from the meetings and his
love for Mac. He may not have posted lots to the list, but he certainly read
it all and took a lot of it in.
I had the pleasure of working with Ken as a client and friend and also had a
 lot of time for him.
And he most definitely loved his Mac's and would sway as many people as
possible to the better side of computing.
He always had time for a chat,...

I don't have details as yet for his funeral, but was asked to let his fellow
Mac community know, hence the email.

I know he will certainly be missed.

 R.I.P Ken

This is sad news indeed! I too had Ken as a client for a time, and got to
know him well. He became a good friend. I'll miss his presence at the monthly
meetings. He was a great Mac evangelist!

While the general suggestion has been made that your .ocx file may be
interpreted as a misnamed .docx file, this may not necessarily be the case.
 Taken from http://www.file-extensions.org/ocx-file-extension, the following
is their explanation of the .ocx file extension:

 File extension OCX description:
An OCX is an Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) custom control, a
special-purpose program that can be created for use by applications running
on Microsoft's Windows systems. OCXs provide such functions as handling
scroll bar movement and window resizing. If you have a Windows system, you'll
find a number of files in your Windows directory with the OCX file name
 suffix.
Object Linking and Embedding was designed to support compound documents
(which contain multiple information types, such as text, graphic images,
sound, motion video). The Windows desktop is an example of a compound
document and Microsoft used OLE to build it. OLE and the Component Object
Model (COM), a more general concept that succeeded OLE, support the
development of plug-and-play programs that can be written in any language
and used dynamically by any application in the system. These programs are
known as components and the application in which they are run is known as a
container. This component-based approach to application development reduces
development time and improves the program capability and quality. Windows
application development programs such as PowerBuilder and Microsoft Access
 take advantage of OCXs.
Microsoft now calls an OCX an ActiveX control, the component object under
Microsoft's set of ActiveX technologies, of which the fundamental concept is
the Component Object Model (COM) and, in a network, the Distributed Component
 Object Model (DCOM).
An OCX or ActiveX control is actually implemented as a dynamic link library
DLL module. (You can think of a DLL program as a subprogram that can be
used by any number of application programs, each of which is a container
for the DLL or OCX/ActiveX control object.) Visual Basic and C++ are
commonly used to write OCX or ActiveX controls.

Clear as mud? Thought so. The fact that the file opened for you in Pages is
probably a happy coincidence. Take Daniel K's suggestion: export it as a Word
or PDF file and send that to your daughter. This simply reinforces the fact
that the three-character file extension is one of the greatest crimes against
the world of computing that Microsoft has committed in its long existence,
and there have been plenty of others. The great tragedy is that has forced
everyone else, even Apple, to comply purely for compatibility reasons.

 Good Morning All,

members and their contact/currency details. I would like to re-establish the

card for everyone. The Treasurer has sent me a couple of Excel spreadsheets
with the, as far as he can ascertain, currently paid up members and also one
with a longer list of the older members. From this information I can start
 work on the project.
Please contact me OFF LIST if you are happy to supply your details.

It may also be an idea if we have emergency contact names and phone numbers.

At a later date the database could be upgraded to include the computers
members are using. A list of Corporate and Life membership would also be
 useful.

Simple question, complex answer. Briefly put though, your neighbour will need
a wireless router with some sort of external wireless antenna for best
results. I would certainly seek expert advice on this in order to determine
the best equipment to buy to get this done efficiently.

The basics of what you are trying to achieve are explained at

fm is frequency modulation not!! digital at all (we all have the fm radio

My sympathies and I wish you luck. Bigpond must be the most incompetent
Provider in OZ if not the world. I foolishly signed up for a new deal which was
going to give me unbelievable speeds for a relatively modest outlay. I noted
that I could back out of the deal within 7 days and did so. To welcome me to
Bigpond they credited me with a welcome credit which months later I am still
being credited with despite on 3 or 4 occasions telling them I am not with
them, I feel like spending it now:-)

occasional 600Mb to 900Mb. On the day the 7Gb occurred I was sick in be most
of the day and as a result there was very little activity all day, I never
watch or download movies and would balk at downloading any file that is
anything like that size, the largest e-mail video clips don't go much bigger
than 1.5Mb. The only thing that has changed is the introduction of a new
iMac in March which was set up from its predecessor via firewire.

I am having a dispute with bigPond over it so would appreciate any

 1. Click on View on the browser Menu Bar.
 2. Highlight Text Size with your mouse and notice that you now have 3
choices that will allow you to increase or decrease text size.
View Zoom - Zoom Text Only
 3. Increase or Decrease your font size and you will see a change in text size
 on this web page.

You can also hold down 'Command' (Apple Key) and type + or - to change
 the font size.
Select 'Reset' or 'Command' (Apple key)' and 0 (zero) to return to the
 default text size.

Another suggestion in addition to all the others:

Go to Firefox Preferences and click the Content Tab. Under Fonts Colors
click the Advanced button next to the Font Size menu. You will see a menu
called Minimum Font Size, and it's probably set to None at present, which
means that Firefox is letting the CSS/HTML code of the page determine the
font size. Change this value to something that works for you. I generally
find that anything smaller than 10 starts to get a bit difficult on my 24
Mac. The point here is that regardless of what font size is specified in the
code, Firefox will always display it at at least the size you specify in this
 setting.

Note to Safari users: Safari has this setting as well in its Advanced
 preferences section.

quite unfairly gets the 5th degree grilling!

Having worked in support for 5 different Apple resellers in Perth
before moving to Curtin Uni 18 years ago as well as being *very*
heavily involved in WAMUG and UMUC in the past, I know that there
are a great number of honest and legit Mac people in WA who are
outside the sphere of influence of WAMUG who we should expect the
best of rather than the worst. Can't we at least presume them
innocent until proven guilty? (reading Craig's response on
Whirlpool it seems quite informative and appropriate to me).

I also think the Mac market in Perth is big enough to support new
blood with the increasing interest in all things Apple -
particularly as far as smaller Mac-knowledgeable shopfront retail
south of the river is concerned - Daniel for example doesn't address
the shopfront retail market. Heck, there are 2 million people in
Perth, the vast majority of whom have never heard of WAMUG and who
expect a shopfront to go to - isn't it better for them to have an
alternative to the big impersonal Myers and JB HiFi box movers?

Otherwise we are in danger of appearing very insular and inward
focused and end up scaring off others who might otherwise have
participated.

Come on guys, can't we be a bit more welcoming and appreciative of
getting more choice in the Mac World? Not everyone lives close to
Joondalup Applecentre or the other north of the river Apple
resellers who have a good rep! At least let's give MaxStyle an
opportunity to prove themselves?

Can't we all just get along?! ;-)

Re: iPhone Help

2009-05-29 Thread Malcolm McCallum
I worked in Port Hedland for about 10 years as a Surgeon/GP/RFDS
doctor and had a ball. Found the cyclones exciting (as long as you
felt you were reasonably safe :-) ) and the scenery can be just out
of this world as long as you were willing to travel hours and hours
and hours :-(Temperatures can be high, we saw 57 on the inside
thermometer but 42 is not uncommon. In one cyclone the anemometer
recorded up to 212 MPH and then disintegrated :-). Got to know
aborigines quite well and they are great people when not under the
affluence of incohol. Where are you going and what is your profession?

Hi Mac
That's a relief! Did you manage to download the software easily or
were you
able to get the scanner going with the version you had already
downloaded?

Oh well. It was nice to share our combined fumbling-around-efforts!

I'll let you know when I might need it back. If possible by Friday
5th June

- I come to Floreat every Fri morning.
Will let you know.

Hi Mac
I have an 'Epson Perfection 4490 Photo' scanner that does a great
job on the
prints and negatives that I have scanned. I bought it from Harvey

years ago and it was the same model they were using in-store for
scanning
stuff for customers.. It will only do 4 slides at a time. Very easy
to use
I imagine the software is downloadable (although I probably have a
disc).
Uses a USB port.
You're welcome to borrow it as I use it rarely.

Does anyone have a 35 mm slide scanner that I could borrow,
rent, steal, or otherwise acquire for fora week or so. I would like
to scan a large number of slides over a concentrated week of
activity. :-)
