Malcolm McCallum Like Houston I have another problem I could use some help on . I have the latest apple TV and have had it working as it was designed to do but it was a bit flaky. with dropouts and I am fairly certain it is lack of signal strength. I have moved metal objects around the unit but still cannot get it working reliably. I know I can take a ethernet cable to it but feel I am past crawling through the roof.what other options are there in upping the signal strength? Either an Airport Express in extender mode (which I have) for the children's end of the house or a purpose made extender - I'm sure Apple makes them but also Belkin, Netgear et al make them too. These are simple plugins to a wall power point. I went with an Ethernet connection for my AppleTV from the outset and it has always been good service. Are you sure you have good data rate into your house? This can also be a limitation on video streaming if it is poor. Another option is to use data over power which basically uses your 240v electrical cabling in the house to carry data as well. Placing one of these next to the AppleTV might be a solution too. Iwill solve the problem by putting a stick into the USB socket Thanks for your help Mac Malcolm McCallum doc...@westnet.com.au Skype docmactor On 07/02/2013, at 2:02 PM, Neil Houghton n...@possumology.com wrote: Hi Mac, As I see it there are two issues here: 1) what cable would physically connect your turntable to your computer 2) if you make such a connection, will it do what you want (copy your records tracks to your computer) or not - or might it even damage one or both of the devices. 1) is easily answered - you just need a cable that has plugs which match the sockets on each device - but maybe there is a good reason you can't easily find/buy one - I mean, I could physically make a mains extension lead that had a plug on each end - but it would be an extremely bad idea ;o) You really need to address 2) first. Traditionally you would get record tracks from an LP to the computer by taking the audio output from your stereo system and connecting it into your computers audio in port. This has been well covered before, so I won't go into details except to note that the turntable output usually requires pre-amplification and equalisation up to line level to give the computer what it wants - which is why you would normally use the line-out socket of your amplifier/stereo system (rather than the direct turntable output). More recently, however, turntables have been produced aimed more at transferring to computers, including ones with USB ports. There are, however, different implementations of this. A couple of examples: 1) This turntable http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=GE4056 outputs an audio signal via either standard RCA plugs or via usb. With this approach you use a computer program (such as Audacity) to record the audio to your computer. In this case, the turntable has a Type B USB port and is connected to the computer via a standard Type A to Type B cable. 2) This turntable http://dicksmith.com.au/product/AE2836/ does audio to mp3 encoding within the turntable. The USB port would be a Type A port to allow you to insert a usb drive. The turntable also has line-out ports - so you could encode using your computer the traditional way. From what you say, your turntable has digital output by a USB Type A port - and so I believe it will have an onboard conversion to mp3 and will expect to see a USB storage device at the port - which it will write the mp3 file to. I would suggest: A) If you are happy with the mp3 output, as encoded by the turntable, then connect a usb drive to the turntable and encode away - you can always transfer them to your computer later. Unless your turntable has specific limits, you wouldn't need to use a thumb drive - you could use a more spacious USB hard drive (though I would suggest an externally-powered drive unless you know the turntable USB port can output enough power to run a portable HD) B) If you wish to have more control over the conversion (and provided your turntable has audio line-out and your computer has audio line-in) feed the audio to your computer and use suitable audio software to record/convert to your preferences (see previous WAMUG posts re suitable software). If you want a bit more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Host_and_Device_interface _receptacles gives a good run-down on various aspects of USB, including the different connector types and their use/purpose - you can see from their Cable plug table/matrix that a Type A to Type A cable is a non-standard configuration where: Non-standard existing for specific proprietary purposes, and not interoperable with USB-IF compliant equipment. Also, this article http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/314204/reviewed_5_usb_turntables_conv ert_lps_mp3s/? is a review of 5 USB turntables and is a bit PC-centric but it also discusses the overall process and the options and raises some things to think about. Re: router for VOIP??
I have an iinet bob lite and we are having problems despite having had a replacement Boblite. We get calls and when we answer the call there is no one there.Very frustrating:-( Mac On 04/01/2013, at 11:55 AM, Ronni Brown ro...@mac.com wrote: Hi Rosemary, I seem to remember someone suggesting that Bob wasn't a good idea combined with Time Machine? I seem to remember that WAMUG member Rod Blitvich might be using iiNet's BoB VoIP with a Time Capsule. Below is reply to Peter: Begin Quote: 26 November 2010 2:45PM Ronda Brown ro...@mac.com To: WAMUG wamug@wamug.org.au Re: Time Capsule and BoB Hi Peter, I was clearing our my Drafts Mailbox, and found I had started a reply to your query back in October :-( You have probably found all the answer by now, but I'll post what I was going to reply anyway. I don't think I would not recommend using BoB with a Time Capsule, I'll explain my reasons below. On 14/10/2010, at 9:28 AM, Crisp, Peter wrote: My ISP has a promotion on for their thing called BoB. I’m not quite sure what it is (VOIP I think) but I wondered if I ever went to one of these BoB things (and hence no longer a land line), whether the Time Capsule I have will port into this and all Mac wireless access will still be in through the Time Capsule. I'll first answer your query What is BoB? BoB’s an 802.11n router with an in-built ADSL2+ modem. To be specific, it’s a Belkin modem/router, with shared branding between iiNet and Belkin. Wireless support is in the 2.4GHz range only, and it’s a dual-radio router. Not a dual-band router. Instead of getting a 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio, you instead get two 2.4GHz radios, one of which is disabled by default. BoB’s also VoIP capable with PSTN passthrough, and up to two accounts can be configured, although only via one provider. Not surprisingly, iiNet would prefer that you choose it as the provider. BoB is only a 10/100 (100Mbps) LAN Ethernet …. NOT 1Gbps that Time Capsule has. BoB only uses 2.4GHz NOT 5GHz 1TB Time Capsule has a One Gigabit Ethernet WAN port for connecting a DSL or cable modem Three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for connecting computers or network devices USB port for connecting a USB printer or USB external hard drive 802.11n wireless Does anyone have this configuration and experiences please? I don't know of anyone using BoB with a Time Capsule. The only way I can see to get this working. Is to disable WiFi on BoB, and use the WiFi on the Time Capsule. Connect BoB to the Time Capsule’s Ethernet WAN port (set the TC to Bridge Mode so as not to get double NAT). And Use the Time Capsule Dual Band for all your wireless needs (turn the BoB wireless OFF). VoIP will / should still work when BoB wifi is turned off, VoIP does not run over wifi per se. /End Quote: - Cheers, Ronni On 02/01/2013, at 4:50 PM, Rosemary Spark arkaysp...@gmail.com wrote: We were considering getting VOIP but were wondering what kind of modem/router to get. When I complain to BigPond, they send the usual form letter, which includes the most infuriating excuse for slow network speed. They cite user numbers as a likely reason for a slow connection. Of course, they are correct, as I have better speeds when the numbers thin out. But … it's BigPond that signs up the numbers. It's BigPond that takes the fees from those numbers. OCXs provide such functions as handling scroll bar movement and window resizing. If you have a Windows system, you'll find a number of files in your Windows directory with the OCX file name suffix. Object Linking and Embedding was designed to support compound documents (which contain multiple information types, such as text, graphic images, sound, motion video). The Windows desktop is an example of a compound document and Microsoft used OLE to build it. OLE and the Component Object Model (COM), a more general concept that succeeded OLE, support the development of plug-and-play programs that can be written in any language and used dynamically by any application in the system. These programs are known as components and the application in which they are run is known as a container. This component-based approach to application development reduces development time and improves the program capability and quality. Windows application development programs such as PowerBuilder and Microsoft Access take advantage of OCXs. Microsoft now calls an OCX an ActiveX control, the component object under Microsoft's set of ActiveX technologies, of which the fundamental concept is the Component Object Model (COM) and, in a network, the Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM). An OCX or ActiveX control is actually implemented as a dynamic link library DLL module. (You can think of a DLL program as a subprogram that can be used by any number of application programs, each of which is a container for the DLL or OCX/ActiveX control object.) Visual Basic and C++ are commonly used to write OCX or ActiveX controls. Clear as mud? Thought so. The fact that the file opened for you in Pages is probably a happy coincidence. Take Daniel K's suggestion: export it as a Word or PDF file and send that to your daughter. You will see a menu called Minimum Font Size, and it's probably set to None at present, which means that Firefox is letting the CSS/HTML code of the page determine the font size. Change this value to something that works for you. I generally find that anything smaller than 10 starts to get a bit difficult on my 24 Mac. The point here is that regardless of what font size is specified in the code, Firefox will always display it at at least the size you specify in this setting. Having worked in support for 5 different Apple resellers in Perth before moving to Curtin Uni 18 years ago as well as being *very* heavily involved in WAMUG and UMUC in the past, I know that there are a great number of honest and legit Mac people in WA who are outside the sphere of influence of WAMUG who we should expect the best of rather than the worst. Can't we at least presume them innocent until proven guilty? (reading Craig's response on Whirlpool it seems quite informative and appropriate to me). I also think the Mac market in Perth is big enough to support new blood with the increasing interest in all things Apple - particularly as far as smaller Mac-knowledgeable shopfront retail south of the river is concerned - Daniel for example doesn't address the shopfront retail market. Heck, there are 2 million people in Perth, the vast majority of whom have never heard of WAMUG and who expect a shopfront to go to - isn't it better for them to have an alternative to the big impersonal Myers and JB HiFi box movers? Otherwise we are in danger of appearing very insular and inward focused and end up scaring off others who might otherwise have participated. Come on guys, can't we be a bit more welcoming and appreciative of getting more choice in the Mac World? Found the cyclones exciting (as long as you felt you were reasonably safe :-) ) and the scenery can be just out of this world as long as you were willing to travel hours and hours and hours :-(Temperatures can be high, we saw 57 on the inside thermometer but 42 is not uncommon. In one cyclone the anemometer recorded up to 212 MPH and then disintegrated :-). Got to know aborigines quite well and they are great people when not under the affluence of incohol. Where are you going and what is your profession? Mac , at 1:21 AM, joe mastrella wrote: Greetings! I will be traveling to Perth and north Western (Pilbara) for an extended stay. Very easy to use I imagine the software is downloadable (although I probably have a disc). Uses a USB port. You're welcome to borrow it as I use it rarely.
