Re: Nice little info App

2012-05-22 Thread Peder Kristensen
Hi All,

Here is a link to another site that has some interesting tool, the Consultant’s
Canary, it;s a Terminal app See link for details -
http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/21/consultants-canary-is-the-ultimate-troubleshooting-aid-for-mac-os-x/

Using Consultant’s Canary is easy, you can run the standalone Consultant’s
Canary app directly on a single Mac which launches Terminal and a python script
on it’s own, or you could open the apps package to find the heart of the app
“dispatcher.py” which could then be used over a network to remotely diagnose
and troubleshoot multiple Macs. The same version of Consultant’s Canary will
work on any version of OS X later than 10.5, including Lion.

CC may just be the ultimate troubleshooting aid for Mac OS X, a remarkable feet
for a free utility, making it’s an absolute must-have addition to a Mac power
users toolkit.”

Cheers,
Peder

Don't believe the noise on the interwebs - the new iPad does work on 4G
frequencies and at 4G speeds in Australia.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) defines 4G to include:
 - LTE (Long Term Evolution)
 - WiMax
 - HSPA+ dual carrier

Vivid Wireless advertises their WiMax service which tops out at 4-5mbps
 around Australia as 4G.

Telstra advertises their HSPA+ dual carrier service which is capable of
running at speeds up to 42mps as 4G (as per the ITU). Already users are
reporting real-world speeds of up to 20 Mbps in Sydney besting Vivid
 Wireless's 4G speeds by a factor of 4.

At the moment, Telstra's LTE service is giving faster speeds in many tests,
but just wait till the number of users increases to the sorts of numbers on
the HSPA frequencies and you should see those speeds drop as LTE users (just
like HSPA and WiMax) all share the same bandwidth to their local tower. In
the USA, tests of 4G in New York top out at 20mbps - the same as what
Tesltra HSPA+ dual carrier achieves in the real world here in Australia.

Telstra has also previously indicated they would be doubling the speed of
HSPA+ DC to 84mbps using MIMO which would give it parity with the current
generation of LTE. Only LTE Advanced theoretically offers greater than
 100mbps.

The iPad 4G is indeed 4G in Australia and the ACCC has no case.

No Tim we don’t see your photo in the WAMUG emails.

 That's good to know/clarify.

Do you hve your photo in your card in Address Book

 Yes, it is in there.

and in System Preferences Users Groups?

Yes. The same photo is there. I assume that is where Address Book gets it
 from, or vice versa.

 That is correct.

And yes, we have noticed that my OLD “My Card” (personal vCard) in Address
Book shows up on ‘some’ WAMUG recipients messages. Mainly MobileMe email
 accounts.

If a recipient of the message has the sender's vCard (Card in Address Book)
and it includes a photo, then the photo will show in messages from that
 person.
Do you have my vCard or have setup a card in Address Book with my details?

No I don't. I don't have any details for Adrian Skehan either in my Address
Book, but I see both your photos in emails either of you send to WAMUG.

I would presume that Adrian has his Address Book Card set as his My Card as
 do I.

I understand that in Lion Mail that if the person sending the email has
chosen a personal Address Book card using the Menu - Card Make This My
Card (MeCard) then if there is a photo on that card it will show up on
 email for the recipients.

This appears to be what is happening. I note that this occurs for only
yourself and Adrian, and a quick scan through shows me you are both mac.com
and me.com subscribers and send from that account. Not many other WAMUG
posters send from their mac.com or me.com accounts, and it seems that those
who do - Adrian and yourself, appear as images in my Mail. Not that I mind,
just found it contrary to what we'd understood was happening.

I think there are more people than Adrian I using their .me or .mac email
 address on WAMUG.
I also would be surprised if only Adrian I have our Cards in Address Book
 set as our 'My Card'.
But that seems to be the common factor having your card set as My Card.

If you have an Address Book card for the sender, then the photo on that
card will override the photo for their personal Address Book card.

Tim you can remove old photos from appearing in Mail messages.
Address Book stores pictures in the folder:
~/Library/Images/People/ or in Lion ‘iChat Recent Pictures'

Click the Home icon in the Finder toolbar, then proceed to your Library
 folder then images people

After you navigate to the People or iChat Recent Pictures folder, you see
files with names that correspond to the email addresses in your Address
 book.

There is no folder ~/Library/Images/People, but there is
 ~/Library/Images/iChat Recent Pictures.
In that folder there are no pictures of anyone, just two images I have used
in the past as my photo in Address Book.

 I am using 10.7.2 and Mail 5.1

I a not near my computer to check but look in Home Library Application
Support Address Book, if I remember correctly there you will find images.

Neither your, or Adrians, details are stored in my redundant Entourage
 Address Book either.

No it has nothing to do with Entourage Address Book.

As I've said, I don't particularly mind seeing pictures of people, but if
they are not expecting it to be displayed - which was the query of the
original poster - then it'd be good to understand under what situations this
 is happening.

He did not have a photo.

9000F. It has a special slide (transparency) mode (four at a time) as well as
regular flatbed scanning. It comes with Photoshop Elements including a

We bought it mostly because of its ability to scan slides, which it does
extremely well. The flatbed scanning, especially of photographic prints, is
 also high quality.

It works with the Mac out of the box although look for the Mac icon on the
packaging to be sure (I suppose there could be a Windows-only model).

There are cheaper scanners, but the quality can be very poor. My partner's
sister bought a cheap brand and when it scanned slides the results were
absolute rubbish - the scanned version looked nothing like the original. It
was so bad that she eventually just discarded it and bought a Canon.

Re: Nikon Scan software

2011-12-18 Thread Peder Kristensen
Hi Chris,

I have been using VueScan Pro for some time, and I’m very happy with it. The
pro version gives you extra scanning features and unlimited software updates.
Contra to other scanning softwares, like SilverFast, it does not have a lot of
pre editing corrections. These are mainly made post scan, using Photoshop or
other similar products.

I suggest you try out the demo versions, also for supported scanner, see
http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#supported

I did also get the VueScan Bible book, which gives you more in-depth
information about the VueScan scanning features.

Cheers,
Peder

The Nikon website suggests using a 3rd party software provider called VueScan

I thought I would ask folks in the Group if you have any advice/experience

 Hi folks,

This is a somewhat forlorn plea - as I think I know the unpalatable answer
 :o((

We are in Paris. I have been trying to use my iPhone. It has been hard as
the so-called wi-fi internet at the apartment is an ibook with a 3G modem in
it. I won't go into the details of that - I sort of got it working by
creating a computer to computer network with airport and sharing the
internet to it - it worked after a fashion - enough to do dropbox syncs etc.

HOWEVER - I only mention this in case it has some relevance to my REAL
PROBLEM - my iPhone appears to have totally died.

This morning I was trying to dropbox synch some stuff from the computer to
the phone and noticed that I kept losing the connection - the wifi was
connected and then it wasn't - the phone was a matter of a few cm from the
laptop so signal strength wasn't a problem. Each time I could reconnect OK
but then I would lose the connection in a matter of seconds. I don't know if
this is relevant or not as a sign of something failing. Anyway, I finally
achieved the transfers I wanted and stuck the phone in my pocket.

Around 10-15 minutes later I went to make a phone call and I couldn't wake
the iPhone - pressing the home key, trying to invoke a shutdown/restart by
holding down the power key - nothing happens.

The battery was at about 95% when it went in my pocket - so that's not the
 problem.

I've tried plugging the phone into my laptop but it is not recognised by
iTunes or showing as an attached USB device on System profiler.

It seems like the phone is completely powered down and won't switch on.

To channel Monty Python - it has ceased to be - it is an ex iPhone.

I have just checked the receipt and the warranty expired 26th August -
 exactly 1 month ago!!

I must admit, I don't feel like paying Apple for another iPnone after just
over a year of VERY light usage. I'm still commited to paying Telstra $49 a
month for the plan (though I guess I could find another phone to stick it
 in).

Any body have any ideas/tips/ tricks to bring my iPhone back to life?

 Cheers

Many Reunion users are former Family Tree Maker users who switched to
Reunion successfully using a GEDCOM file to transfer their data.

The instructions below are for exporting a GEDCOM file from Family Tree
Maker and importing the GEDCOM file into Reunion 9. We suggest you bookmark
this page and refer to it while transferring your data.

Step 1: Open your family file in Family Tree Maker.

Step 2: From the main menu, choose File - Export File - Entire File.

Step 3: From the Save as type popup menu, choose GEDCOM (*.GED)

Step 4: To save the GEDCOM file to your Windows Desktop, click Desktopon
the left side of the window.

Step 5: Click Save and a new window will open. Make sure the settings in
the Export to GEDCOM window are as follows:

 Step 6: Click OK.

The GEDCOM file will appear on your Windows Desktop. (Note that the .GED
extension may not be visible when the file is on the Desktop.)

Step 7: Move this file to your Macintosh via USB flash drive, CD-R,
 network, or email.

Step 8: On your Macintosh, drag and drop the GEDCOM file onto theReunion 9
icon which is inside your Applications folder.

 Notes...

 • Reunion 9 in demo mode does not import GEDCOM files.
 • GEDCOM exchange with Family Tree Maker is generally very good,
depending on the extent to which custom fields and source records are
 utilized.

However, the basics, such as all the people, names, dates, places, links
(parents to children, spouses, etc.) should transfer fine.
The most problematic area of GEDCOM is with source”

Hi Brian,

If you can’t ‘download’ the video, then you could try apps such as Snaps Pro [

screen, including the system audio. Just make sure you don’t have any app that
also generates sound.

For those of you that liked the ’trafic’ light to be the horizontal version …

Use Terminal command.

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -boolean YES

 Hi all,
So what sorts of Car kits is everyone using with your iPhones in your cars

 We need:

 - hands-free phone calling
 - car audio play-thru (FM transmission as we don't have a direct audio input
 to the car stereo unfortuntely)
 - dashboard/windshield mount (rotatable for GPS apps)
 - in-car charging

We've tried the Belkin TuneBase FM with Handsfree for iPhone and found the FM
transmitter not that fantastic in our particular car, though it performed
well in my sisters car, and our car cig lighter socket was a bit too low for
the stalk to bring the iPhone up to a height that would make it useable for
 GPS software usage.

We have a BlueAnt, Supertooth II bluetooth handsfree in our other car, which
works well enough for hands-free calling, but it doesn't do anything else.

I'm leaning towards the Tom Tom Car Kit for iPhone which ticks off on most
items though doesn't do FM radio transmission so we'd need to work out some
other option there. it's a leased car, so that makes it more difficult.

Can anyone recommend a cheap source of the Tom Tom unit?

 Works fine.
I sync this data to my iPhone 3GS running iOS4 via the iTunes 9.2, USB

Now when I look at the birthday calendar on my iPhone using the Calendar app
it shows everyone's birthday correctly except for people over 80 years old.
I don't know at exactly what age it stops showing birthdays, but all my
entries for people over 80 are not shown, I don't have any entries for people

If I use the iDayLite app to show birthdays they are all shown correctly, and
the data all shows up in the Contacts app.

I don't know if this was an issue in iOS 3.1.3, but I never noticed it.
Can someone check to see if it is unique to my configuration, or if it is
 more widespread.

Hi All,

I guess most of us don’t like telemarketer to call us with sorts of offers …
this is note from The Australian Government …

This is for Australian phone numbers

REMEMBER: Mobile Phone Numbers Go Public next month.

REMINDER all mobile phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies
and you will start to receive sale calls.

YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS

Below is a link where you can enter your phone numbers online to put an end to
telemarketing calls. Don't just delete those calls otherwise you will find
that you have been signed up for all sorts of extra services that you didn't
want or know about. Like special chimes, music etc.

https://www.donotcall.gov.au/

Here you can list your Australian fixed line and mobile numbers on the Do Not
Call Register, provided the numbers are used primarily for private or domestic
purposes.

1 position the page to be copied on the glass under the lid

the left or right of the OK button to get to Copy
3 press the OK button (make a choice if colour or BW)
 4 press Start.
In this mode do you get a quick copy?

I have an Epson TX700W and it only has a power cable connected to it and it

one Airport Express 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible).

The TX800FW is a newer model.

I'm not sure on the Epson TX550W, but I notice it's specifications list

I think Daniel Kerr has the latest model of these MF Wireless Network

The other Multifunction Printers only print wirelessly, you need to connect

The D-Link does not have a USB printer port but I see that printer/scanner

Would the best way to go be to invest in Airport Express/Extreme and get a
non-wifi printer/scanner and use the printer facility to share among all
units. This would make the wifi bit of the D-Link redundant but would not
require a wireless enabled printer. Clearly the iMac and PC will be
deskbound and can connect to the printer by ethernet (or wireless for the
 iMac).
My own system is centred around an Airport Extreme and a DSL-504

Are there issues with printer/scanner units on this sort of setup?
Words of wisdom will be welcomed.

If you are still unable to download the Episode, perhaps try

If you hold down Command and Option when launching iTunes, it will

Safe Mode prevents third party visualizers and device plug-ins from

Hope you get to download it is worth the time ;-)

Hi All,

I don’t know if this app would be of help to change the Short User
Name, see link http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/49930

Product Description:
One of the most common questions users of Mac OS X ask is How do I
change my short username? Although OS X provides a simple interface
-- the Accounts pane of System Preferences -- for changing a user's
long name, there's been no easy way to change the short name of an
account once it is created. …

I have used it with success, but it was on a Tiger system. But as
alway backup the system before making major changes. The Computer Name
can be changed via System Preferences Sharing option.

Changing the short username in Leopard
by Dan Frakes, Macworld.com
One of the most-frequently-asked questions about Mac OS X is “How do I
change my short username?” While it's easy to change your full username
—an easily-accessible setting in Accounts preferences—the short
username, which is also the name of your home folder in the Finder,
seems set in stone (or in silicon, if you will).”

That may be what your are after.

The Computer

Re: Edit dictionary

2009-10-09 Thread Peder Kristensen

Hi All,

There is an app Dictionary Cleaner - 1.5” that you can get from
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10873219
or the authors website - http://twoamsoftware.com/

I have used it a number of times. Also, you can edit different
dictionaries that you may have added. In SP it now used “Automatic by
Language” , but you select any of the dictionaries that have installed
on your system.

In SP you can now add/edit Substitution, see MacWorld’s article -
http://macworld.com.au/help/view/how-to-use-text-substitution-in-snow-leopard-3525

Apple will be releasing Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. This upgrade
from Apple introduces a few incompatibles with Reunion 9. To address
these problems, we will be releasing a free update for Reunion 9 users
next week. This update will be named Reunion 9.0a

If you use Reunion regularly, we advise you to delay the installation
of Snow Leopard until you download and install the free Reunion
update, version 9.0a.

This raises the question what other apps out there will have
incompatible issues with Snow Leopard ... does anyone received simular

If you are talking just about making phone calls, with an extended
mobile phone range, then TH Bury (www.bury.com) have
either a dedicated cradle (Uni TakeTalk) for the 3G iphone, or a
Bluetooth cradle, with inductive aerial (Take Talk BT). With
the latter, a separate charging cable is needed is available for
the 3G iphone. I have used the Take Talk BT (without a
charging cable for the iphone) connected to an external aerial and
it certainly extends the mobile phone range in rural areas,
although if hills are between you and the tower, the range extension
will be minimal. However, of itself, the Take Talk BT
does not support the iPod function of the iPhone, at least in the
car that I have used it in.

If you are just after a hands free unit, without an external aerial,
there are a lot cheaper options than the TH Bury products.

on the new MacBook. Well, here is a link to MacFixIt page that gives
some options to the different problems, like TargerDisk and attaching
FireWire devices:

 http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20081015220226873

Not as flash as having a genuine FireWire port but it may be of help.

computers,
run disk repairs while booted from another drive in lieu of a Mac

There are

no threads left on the Apple Discussion Boards regarding this
issue! The elimination of FireWire also spells trouble for iMovie
users, who will no longer be able to directly connect cameras that
use the
protocol. The new MacBooks still ship with iMovie, but Apple
apparently
expects users to work with a USB-capable camera or import data to
another

system first. An Apple employee posting on the company's discussion
boards says that USB is the preferred interface for iMovie
'08.There
are limited USB-to-FireWire converters, but most don't provide

6-pin connectivity.

I honestly don't know ... what were Apple thinking, taking
Firewire away seems ridiculous to me.
I'll be keeping my 17 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz with its Firewire Port

Hi all

I'm getting fed up with changing USB cables on my Macs for assorted

digital cameras, portable printers etc. I seem to need at least
three
different 'mini' USB connectors, and the right cable never seems to
be
on the right machine (if I can find it). This also means cumbersome

sorting through the 'spaghetti' to locate cables and vacant USB
ports,
making it really tiresome to do anything quickly when asked: Can
you
just do this for me?.

Googling only seems to come up with USB hubs etc with two or more
sockets, rather than cables with multiple 'heads'. (But I may be
using the wrong terms.)

Does anyone know of a basic USB cable adapter/jack with multiple
connectors of the different 'standard' USB sizes?

Thanks in anticipation ...

have programmed (by hand) my website using HTML, PHP and javascript
and the MYSQL data base.

I have Microsoft Visual C++ .net programs, and while I've written a
number of applications in that, they again are only text based (run

to be bothered with.

Now that I have the iMac, I would like to develop some programs
(mainly for my own use) that have a graphical interface. These
programs would mainly manipulate midi and wave files, and hence need
to be able to work at the bit and byte level. The programs are not
doing anything particularly complex, so processing speed is not a
major consideration.

I was wondering if there is a relatively easy program to use that
is not too expensive, and that doesn't require that I fight all the
project control complexity as if I was writing a system for the
Australian Government.

An equivalent of Visual Basic would be fine, provided it could
handle:

(a) binary files (eg wave files and midi files)
(b) manipulate at bits and bytes.
(c) its not too expensive

Can anyone suggest a suitable compiler etc from their experience
that would meet my needs?

Like Warren, I also use Reunion 9 on Leopard without any problems. As
long as the PAF database can be exported as an GEDCOM file you should
have no problem. The reporting option within Reunion is just great.
You could post your question on http://www.reuniontalk.com/ and see if
can find an answer.

Cheers,
Peder

I wonder if anyone is using the genealogy software Reunion 9 with

All my current data is in PAF 2.3.1 on an OS 9 machine. I would
like to

know if Reunion 9 can read a GEDCOM file created by PAF 2.3.1 before I
commit.

Cheers, Paul.

Well if that's true. It could also mean that Steve Jobs will open the
Apple Store in Sydney during his visit. We just have to wait I guess.

Cheers,
Peder
