Hi All, Here is a link to another site that has some interesting tool, the Consultant’s Canary, it;s a Terminal app See link for details - http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/21/consultants-canary-is-the-ultimate-troubleshooting-aid-for-mac-os-x/ Using Consultant’s Canary is easy, you can run the standalone Consultant’s Canary app directly on a single Mac which launches Terminal and a python script on it’s own, or you could open the apps package to find the heart of the app “dispatcher.py” which could then be used over a network to remotely diagnose and troubleshoot multiple Macs. The same version of Consultant’s Canary will work on any version of OS X later than 10.5, including Lion. CC may just be the ultimate troubleshooting aid for Mac OS X, a remarkable feet for a free utility, making it’s an absolute must-have addition to a Mac power users toolkit.” Cheers, Peder On 22/05/2012, at 17:58 PM, Daniel Kerr wrote: Hi All If you want a nice little info app that tells you (in one window) the main info about your system, have a look at this little free one. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) defines 4G to include: - LTE (Long Term Evolution) - WiMax - HSPA+ dual carrier Vivid Wireless advertises their WiMax service which tops out at 4-5mbps around Australia as 4G. Telstra advertises their HSPA+ dual carrier service which is capable of running at speeds up to 42mps as 4G (as per the ITU). Already users are reporting real-world speeds of up to 20 Mbps in Sydney besting Vivid Wireless's 4G speeds by a factor of 4. At the moment, Telstra's LTE service is giving faster speeds in many tests, but just wait till the number of users increases to the sorts of numbers on the HSPA frequencies and you should see those speeds drop as LTE users (just like HSPA and WiMax) all share the same bandwidth to their local tower. In the USA, tests of 4G in New York top out at 20mbps - the same as what Tesltra HSPA+ dual carrier achieves in the real world here in Australia. Telstra has also previously indicated they would be doubling the speed of HSPA+ DC to 84mbps using MIMO which would give it parity with the current generation of LTE. Only LTE Advanced theoretically offers greater than 100mbps. The iPad 4G is indeed 4G in Australia and the ACCC has no case. -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Settings Unsubscribe - http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Settings Unsubscribe - http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Settings Unsubscribe - http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug

I assume that is where Address Book gets it from, or vice versa. That is correct. And yes, we have noticed that my OLD “My Card” (personal vCard) in Address Book shows up on ‘some’ WAMUG recipients messages. Mainly MobileMe email accounts. If a recipient of the message has the sender's vCard (Card in Address Book) and it includes a photo, then the photo will show in messages from that person. Do you have my vCard or have setup a card in Address Book with my details? No I don't. I don't have any details for Adrian Skehan either in my Address Book, but I see both your photos in emails either of you send to WAMUG. I would presume that Adrian has his Address Book Card set as his My Card as do I. I understand that in Lion Mail that if the person sending the email has chosen a personal Address Book card using the Menu - Card Make This My Card (MeCard) then if there is a photo on that card it will show up on email for the recipients. This appears to be what is happening. I note that this occurs for only yourself and Adrian, and a quick scan through shows me you are both mac.com and me.com subscribers and send from that account. Not many other WAMUG posters send from their mac.com or me.com accounts, and it seems that those who do - Adrian and yourself, appear as images in my Mail. Not that I mind, just found it contrary to what we'd understood was happening. I think there are more people than Adrian I using their .me or .mac email address on WAMUG. I also would be surprised if only Adrian I have our Cards in Address Book set as our 'My Card'. But that seems to be the common factor having your card set as My Card. If you have an Address Book card for the sender, then the photo on that card will override the photo for their personal Address Book card. Tim you can remove old photos from appearing in Mail messages. Address Book stores pictures in the folder: ~/Library/Images/People/ or in Lion ‘iChat Recent Pictures' Click the Home icon in the Finder toolbar, then proceed to your Library folder then images people After you navigate to the People or iChat Recent Pictures folder, you see files with names that correspond to the email addresses in your Address book. There is no folder ~/Library/Images/People, but there is ~/Library/Images/iChat Recent Pictures. In that folder there are no pictures of anyone, just two images I have used in the past as my photo in Address Book. I am using 10.7.2 and Mail 5.1 I a not near my computer to check but look in Home Library Application Support Address Book, if I remember correctly there you will find images. Neither your, or Adrians, details are stored in my redundant Entourage Address Book either. No it has nothing to do with Entourage Address Book. As I've said, I don't particularly mind seeing pictures of people, but if they are not expecting it to be displayed - which was the query of the original poster - then it'd be good to understand under what situations this is happening. He did not have a photo. Cheers, Ronni Sent from Ronni's iPad Ta Tim To remove a picture, simply drag it to the Trash. It comes with Photoshop Elements including a plug-in to drive the scanner. We bought it mostly because of its ability to scan slides, which it does extremely well. The flatbed scanning, especially of photographic prints, is also high quality. It works with the Mac out of the box although look for the Mac icon on the packaging to be sure (I suppose there could be a Windows-only model). I have been trying to use my iPhone. It has been hard as the so-called wi-fi internet at the apartment is an ibook with a 3G modem in it. I won't go into the details of that - I sort of got it working by creating a computer to computer network with airport and sharing the internet to it - it worked after a fashion - enough to do dropbox syncs etc. HOWEVER - I only mention this in case it has some relevance to my REAL PROBLEM - my iPhone appears to have totally died. This morning I was trying to dropbox synch some stuff from the computer to the phone and noticed that I kept losing the connection - the wifi was connected and then it wasn't - the phone was a matter of a few cm from the laptop so signal strength wasn't a problem. Each time I could reconnect OK but then I would lose the connection in a matter of seconds. I don't know if this is relevant or not as a sign of something failing. Anyway, I finally achieved the transfers I wanted and stuck the phone in my pocket. Around 10-15 minutes later I went to make a phone call and I couldn't wake the iPhone - pressing the home key, trying to invoke a shutdown/restart by holding down the power key - nothing happens. The battery was at about 95% when it went in my pocket - so that's not the problem. I've tried plugging the phone into my laptop but it is not recognised by iTunes or showing as an attached USB device on System profiler. It seems like the phone is completely powered down and won't switch on. To channel Monty Python - it has ceased to be - it is an ex iPhone. I have just checked the receipt and the warranty expired 26th August - exactly 1 month ago!! I must admit, I don't feel like paying Apple for another iPnone after just over a year of VERY light usage. I'm still commited to paying Telstra $49 a month for the plan (though I guess I could find another phone to stick it in). Any body have any ideas/tips/ tricks to bring my iPhone back to life? Step 3: From the Save as type popup menu, choose GEDCOM (*.GED) Step 4: To save the GEDCOM file to your Windows Desktop, click Desktopon the left side of the window. You can also open the Style / Open Style Draw and then set new document text types and or edit a Styles. For more info, see Pages ’09 Help and search for Styles. Hope that will work for you. Hi Martin, Just a heads up … if you are planning to get the new iPhone 4, it will not fit the in current Tom Tom unit. We have a BlueAnt, Supertooth II bluetooth handsfree in our other car, which works well enough for hands-free calling, but it doesn't do anything else. I'm leaning towards the Tom Tom Car Kit for iPhone which ticks off on most items though doesn't do FM radio transmission so we'd need to work out some other option there. it's a leased car, so that makes it more difficult. Now when I look at the birthday calendar on my iPhone using the Calendar app it shows everyone's birthday correctly except for people over 80 years old. Would the best way to go be to invest in Airport Express/Extreme and get a non-wifi printer/scanner and use the printer facility to share among all units. This would make the wifi bit of the D-Link redundant but would not require a wireless enabled printer. Clearly the iMac and PC will be deskbound and can connect to the printer by ethernet (or wireless for the iMac). My own system is centred around an Airport Extreme and a DSL-504 router/modem and I share a laser printer among three computers very happily, including a wireless MacBook. Further to the ShortName it does not work in Leopard, see link http://www.macworld.com/article/132693/2008/03/changeshortusername.html Changing the short username in Leopard by Dan Frakes, Macworld.com One of the most-frequently-asked questions about Mac OS X is “How do I change my short username?” While it's easy to change your full username —an easily-accessible setting in Accounts preferences—the short username, which is also the name of your home folder in the Finder, seems set in stone (or in silicon, if you will).” That may be what your are after. Where is the FireWire port? How are we going to do target firewire mode?Indeed, the elimination of FireWire target disk mode leaves a huge troubleshooting gap. Many users utilize FireWire target disk mode to diagnose issues, retrieve files from otherwise defunct computers, run disk repairs while booted from another drive in lieu of a Mac OS X startup disc and perform other procedures.Apple is now removing threads on its own discussion boards that mention the lack of FireWire connectivity on the new MacBooks. MacFixIt reader Scott Rose writes:Apparently, Apple doesn't want anybody talking about the lack of FireWire ports on the new MacBooks, because they keep deleting every thread that people are posting about the lack of FireWire ports on the New MacBooks! I was participating in 3 different threads on the Apple Discussion Boards regarding the lack of FireWire from the new MacBooks, and Apple has removed every single thread regarding this topic. There are no threads left on the Apple Discussion Boards regarding this issue! The elimination of FireWire also spells trouble for iMovie users, who will no longer be able to directly connect cameras that use the protocol. The new MacBooks still ship with iMovie, but Apple apparently expects users to work with a USB-capable camera or import data to another system first. An Apple employee posting on the company's discussion boards says that USB is the preferred interface for iMovie '08.There are limited USB-to-FireWire converters, but most don't provide power or 6-pin connectivity. I honestly don't know ... what were Apple thinking, taking Firewire away seems ridiculous to me. Since retiring, I have programmed (by hand) my website using HTML, PHP and javascript and the MYSQL data base. I have Microsoft Visual C++ .net programs, and while I've written a number of applications in that, they again are only text based (run in the DOS screen), and I find the whole business of driving the compiler etc, plus the complexity of screen handling just too much to be bothered with. Now that I have the iMac, I would like to develop some programs (mainly for my own use) that have a graphical interface. These programs would mainly manipulate midi and wave files, and hence need to be able to work at the bit and byte level. The programs are not doing anything particularly complex, so processing speed is not a major consideration. I was wondering if there is a relatively easy program to use that is not too expensive, and that doesn't require that I fight all the project control complexity as if I was writing a system for the Australian Government. An equivalent of Visual Basic would be fine, provided it could handle: (a) binary files (eg wave files and midi files) (b) manipulate at bits and bytes. (c) its not too expensive Can anyone suggest a suitable compiler etc from their experience that would meet my needs? with thanks Clyde -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

iPhoto Book
Hi All, To share some points on the iPhoto Book service. I have just received my first iPhoto Book from Apple. The book is printed in US and comes in a very nice presentation box. What's print quality, well it's not bad, in fact quite happy with the overall print quality. However, some of the photos were a bit red. But then again the images had a lot of red in them and that presents many times problems in print reproduction. My disappointment was in the shipping time.
