Also, less frequently, the machine will just log of without any user

Any suggestions?

Definitely, you just need to right adapter and if you want sound, a

I actually used this about half an hour ago at our golf club.

Hi Philippe,

Don't worry too much.

Usually it's someone else's mailbox that has been hacked/harvested etc.
Your email addresses old and new have been picked up from them.
Spammers run programs that put the harvested address in the sent from field.

I've noticed recently that they send a message to the actual address
too, probably to confirm that it is an active address suitable to
receive more spam emails.

I get heaps.I'm actually amazed at how many attractive Russian women
send me emails professing their undying love and admiration for me even
though we haven't actually met!

I'm running 2 Macbooks amd a Macbook Pro and I still don't bother with
any sort of virus software.

The only problem I've ever had is when I deliberately infected my
machine to see what would happen.

Took me about 2 hours to fix.

Of course if you are using your machines for business work then
protection is an investment.

Hi everyone,

I hate throwing out good computers that work so.

I remember a group that were setting up computers for use in Timor as
well as the Computer Angels in Perth.

These computers range from the original Classics to 6400's. ( I can
still use iMacs on our network).

I'm particularly interested in the Timor idea as the older models are
more likely to be accepted.

Do any of you have any contact info for me?

Disk Copy 6.4 images 2Gb

2003-07-30 Thread Peter Martinson
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a copy of a file called Cleanup for ASR that works with
Apple's Disk Copy 6.4.
( I have 6.4 but the only copy of the Cleanup file I can find
continually downloads as corrupt).

I wish to make a disk image greater than 2 Gb to restore over our
network with Apple Software Restore.

Up until now I've ditched stuff to make the image smaller than 2 Gb and
used Disk Copy 6.3.3 and it works well.

Has anyone had experience with 6.4, as in making the image it breaks it
in to 2 parts which can be mounted but are not recognised when scanning
for ASR.

Have tried making the image with OS X (10.2.6) but again 6.4 can mount
the image but not prepare it for ASR.

I can use 6.4 to clone the image but this means taking a firewire device
to each machine, booting from it and running the cloning process .
Takes too long for 60+ machines plus only half of them have Firewire.

We use OS 10.2 Server with all OS 9.2.2 clients most of which don't have
enough memory to go to OS X
so using OS X with Carbon Copy Cloner is not an option at this stage.

Thanks in Advance

Re: Physical Printer problem

2002-08-19 Thread Peter Martinson
We have the same problem frequently at school ( 8 epson 740's)

The problem seems to be that over time the slide bar that carries the ink
cartridge assembly gets dry.
This causes the cartridge assembly to not quite return to home base.
When the printer starts up it recognises that the assembly is not in the
home position and seems to assume it must be at the other end so it sends it
back! (rapidly) in that seemingly self destruct type manouvre.

Solution
Slide a piece of paper around the chrome slide bar ( if that is what it is
called) so that nothing else will get wet when you give it a quick spray
with CRC or similar. (I use Ballistol)

or dab some on with a cotton bud or similar.

So far we've had 100% success.

Re: dat files

2001-09-23 Thread Peter Martinson
Hi Peter,

At school I get these all the time.
It seems to be some sort of anomaly between windows mail programs and the mac
side of things.
In our case it happens when my principal tries to forward an email that has an
attachment (eg an Excel spreadsheet) from his PC to my mac. I did some looking
up using winmail, dat+problem and I think I got some sort of explanation.

The best way around it , we found, was for my principal to save the attachment
to his machine then send me a new mail and attach the attachment again.
This seems to work fine.
By the way at the moment I'm using Netscape for mail but looking at Entourage.

Hope this helps.

 Great care!

Really, if you don't know what the attachment is meant to be, ignore it and
trash it immediately. The .dat extension appears on numerous file formats in
Windows, but one of the most recognisable is MYOB. I would suggest from the
filename that this is not so in this case, and it's highly suspicious that
this could well be a malicious attachment. Again, if you don't know what it
is, dump it. At least get back to the sender and get them to explain it.
