Re: [WAMUG] Printer Advice please

2023-03-03 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Rod

I can definitely recommend the Epson EcoTank series - I sell a lot of them to
my clients and find them very good.
(And we run two at home - one specifically for photo printing and one for “day
to day stuff”. It replaced my colour epson laser I had. And the running cost is
very cheap. On one set of refillable inks you can get up to 2 years of printing.
And the bottles are only around $25 each colour - and again last up to 2 years
of printing. And I’ve always found the Epson range to be reliable and kept up
to date with drivers.
Any of the entry level Ecotnaks should do - eg something like ET -1810 or
ET-2810/2811 would be fine.
Note that some of the cheaper models don’t have AirPrint (they have “wireless
printing direct” which requires another App if you want to print from your
iPhone or iPad (not as “easy” as Airprnt).
Then it just depends on features you want - eg do you want it to have a screen
on it for ease of copying, flatbed scanning versus ADF (Automatic Document
Feeder) etc,…..
So more features can cost a bit more up front obviously.

Hope that helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

2022-09-10 Thread Stephen Chape via WAMUG
   Although Rod.

Having now taken a look at Boost Mobile.

The prepaid plans they offer (using the Telstra network) will make me
think when mine comes up for renewal.

I use about 0.5 MG of data per month, and my wife about the same.

We are on a special Telstra pensioner plan which has about 10 months to
   go.

Both iPhones are on one account for $30.00 per phone per month (so
   $60.00 per month).

Pretty hard to beat at the moment.

 Hi Rod.
I can’t see any advantage in changing your plan.
Just stay with the current $55.00 month plan in my opinion.
Especially as you don’t need the extra GB.
If your are buying the new phone outright, just switch the SIM over.
If you are getting the new phone with a plan, ask Telstra if they
   will
keep you on your current plan.

2022-09-09 Thread Stephen Chape via WAMUG
   Hi Rod.

I can’t see any advantage in changing your plan.

Just stay with the current $55.00 month plan in my opinion.

Especially as you don’t need the extra GB.

If your are buying the new phone outright, just switch the SIM over.

If you are getting the new phone with a plan, ask Telstra if they will
keep you on your current plan.

I am secretary of the Albany Summer and also web manager and de-facto
IT adviser.   The school runs for two weeks each January with 6 - 700
students for 50 odd courses (www.albanysummerschool.com.au [1]  could

St Joseph’s College and have the use of their class computer setups
with master display etc.  However, we are not permitted access to the
on site internet.  We would like to run a course on the iPad, for
users, and can not be sure they will all have 4G access.  I am
seeking help on purchasing wireless connectivity to, say, 15 iPads
that talks to the internet by (multiplexed?) 4G.  I have not been
able to match this wish to what I can see on the internet, in some
measure due to my own lack of experience.    At times outside of the
Summer School the device will have a function as a single user
connection.  Can anyone please advise? Severin We have in the past
used a single USB dongle and laptop for mobile broadband one committee

Hi Severin,

In iTunes v12 - Tune in to Internet stations:
1. Click the Internet Radio button near the top left of the iTunes window (if
you don't see it, click ...
2. To see available stations, click the triangle next to the type of music you
want to listen to.
3. To tune in, double-click a station

To connect to an Internet Broadcast:
If you know the exact URL of the Internet broadcast, iTunes can connect to it
directly.
1. Choose File Open Stream
2. Enter the URL of the broadcast you want to listen to.

Note: you can't record or save a song from an Internet broadcast, but you can
add your favorite stations to your library or to a playlist so that you can
tune in easily.

Create a Playlist and drag your favorite stations to it.

a little advice please re Mavericks

2013-12-05 Thread wyvern
Hi Guys

I have just updated my newish mini with Mavericks and started wondering about
my MacBook Pro which is currently running 10.6.8.

MacBook Pro 3,1
Processor 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Mavericks says MacBook Pro (mid-/late 2007 or newer) which the 3,1 is.

Would those in the know advise updating system or leaving well alone?

Thanks

Since there is no apparent technical reason not to upgrade, you have to rule
out any personal reasons, eg, are you dependent upon any legacy software on
your Macbook Pro such as AppleWorks or anything else which is not compatible
with Mavericks? You'll have to do a little research in this area if you haven't
done so already.

Assuming that you're comfortable that your working environment won't be
compromised by compatibility issues, you have appropriate backups, and your
Macbook Pro has enough space on the hard drive, I can't see any reason not to
proceed. With the significant differences in the feature list between Mavericks
and 10.6.8, you'll eventually find that working in two increasingly different
OSes will become frustrating.

Having said all that, proceed at your own risk... :-)

Advice please, Time Machine for Lion

2011-11-15 Thread Severin Crisp
I am on the brink of going from Snow Leopard to Lion after having an extended
and trouble free play with an upgraded complete clone on a separate FW800
drive. My three printers and scanner are fine, I can access both my banks and
the ATO and the only things that do not work I knew of in advance and they are
unimportant. When I do this what is the advice on my Time Machine disk? My
own inclination is to wipe it clean and start again which of course erases
items that I just might want, highly unlikely considering additional backups
that I also have in place. If I do not wipe it will Lion start afresh leaving
the old stuff there and inaccessible or will it build on that material
retaining much of it which will be unchanged? I will retain also a clone of my
Snow Leopard boot drive.

Hi Severin,

If you upgrade to Lion, Time Machine will just add backups like normal, I still
have my Snow Leopard backups my ‘now’ Lion backups all in Time Machine /Time
Capsule.

The problem I mentioned previously on WAMUG is IF you have backed up in Lion
with TM and downgrade back to SL … its not backward compatible, but going
forward is NOT a problem.

But if you do want to ‘Wipe’ the Time Machine drive and start again with an
empty external drive.
Just use Use Disk Utility to reformat the drive.

You’re welcome Severin,

If you were using Time Machine before, it will continue working under Lion
without further intervention.

What size is the external drive you are using for Time Machine?
If its at least a 1TB with a lot of room still on it, that is the way I would
go, but if it isn’t I would wipe it and start again.

Its a very good idea to keep a bootable clone of your Snow Leopard installation

I upgraded to Lion a few weeks ago, but I did it following a time where not
only had I been away for almost a fortnight, I had also had the hard drive in
my iMac changed while I was away (it was one those faulty 1Tb Seagate drives
sold in iMacs between May and July this year). After restoring from a CCC
clone, Time Machine objected at the first backup attempt, complaining that
there was not enough room left on the backup disk. Obviously it was not happy
with some that had changed, perhaps a hardware signature of some sort or
something else. In any event, I took the via that the Time Machine backup was
just that: a backup. It's not a storage facility. I simply formatted the Time
Machine disk and started again, in the knowledge that I really hadn't needed
anything in the Time Machine archives up to that point anyway.

Time Machine always does a Full Backup after restoring from a clone.”

Did you give the New Drive the same name as the Old Drive?

If when doing a clone using SuperDuper or CCC and restoring, if you give the
drive the same name as the old drive then when Time Machine does an initial
backup it does a Full Backup but you can still access the previous backups in
Time Machine.

However if you give the newly restored drive a different name then it does a
full backup but you cannot access the previous backups in Time Machine.

TM will continue your old backup sequence but it will do a complete new backup
of your new drive instead of the usual incremental one the first time it backs
up.

So if you want to save space on the TM backup drive, you do what you did ;-) …
reformat TC and start a new backup sequence altogether.

In any event, I took the via that the Time Machine backup was just that: a
backup. It's not a storage facility. I simply formatted the Time Machine disk

I had problems each time I've had logic boards replaced in my 17” MacBook Pros.
Time Machine depends on the MAC address of a computer to tell one system from
another.
This means that if you have your Mac repaired with a new logic board, or
replace your system with a new one, you can't resume backups where you left
off.
If you know of the problem, though, it's not very hard to fix. You need to
re-pair the backup to the new logic board's MAC address.
Further complicating matters is the ACL which prevents you from changing the
system ID information.

In the end, I found it was quicker and much easier though to just delete the
sparsebundle on my TM /TC backup and start new TM backups.

Re: Advice please, Time Machine for Lion

2011-11-15 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi again people,

Just to clarify my previous reply.
I just did a search back through my notes on the times I’ve had a Logic Board
replaced on one of my MBPs.
I found that the ones replaced when I was using Leopard OS X 10.5.8, what I
posted in my previous email was correct.

But the last one I had replaced when using Snow Leopard I found this ‘problem’
had been corrected in Snow Leopard.

/Quote:
I was pleasantly surprised to discover Snow Leopard knows about this problem
and has a solution.
My first backup with the new logic board resulted in the following dialogue:
“Would you like to reuse the backup “/Volumes/Data/x.sparsebundle” with
this computer? The backup was created on a different computer.
If you reuse this backup it can no longer be used by the original computer.”
The options were “Do Not Backup Now”, “Create New Backup”, and “Reuse Backup”.
Clicking on “Reuse Backup” does all the MAC address fix-up while clicking
“Create New Backup” will result in a new Time Machine database being created.
/End Quote:

Sorry if I caused some confusion.

sparsebundle on my TM /TC backup and start new TM backups.

Re: Lion Clean Install-advice please

2011-08-12 Thread cm
Hi again Peter,

Sorry for the delay, but here is a fuller account of some options for you...

I just now reread your original post of this thread. You have a thorough backup
regimen and are therefore in an excellent position to get exactly the
configuration you want. You could if you like buy Lion now and do some
experimenting to see the path you would like to take. You will get Lion 10.7.2
as a free update of the current version in any case.

Here is how you can go about with a few experiments. It is similar to the path
suggested earlier for an upgrade except that you do it to an external drive
rather than your internal drive.

1) Go to the Mac App Store and buy a copy of OS X 10.7 Lion. If it prompts you
to upgrade just hit Cancel and close the app.
2) At this point, backup you system to an eternal drive, put it aside ,and
leave it untouched from here on. Also make sure your Time Machine backup is up
to date.

You are unlikely to need to use either backup but the very reason we make
backups is to cover unlikely or unexpected situation -- or dare I say it,
absolute blunders. :-)

Experiment one (easy): Direct upgrade keeping all apps and settings. I know you
said you would like to start afresh, but this is by far the option that entails
the least amount of work. Give it a try and if you are happy with the result
there is no need to go further

1) Using Super Duper make a clone of you OS X 10.6 system to an external drive.
(A different drive to you safe backup mentioned above)
2) Run the OS X 10.7 Lion app and tell it to install to the external drive.

This will upgrade you 10.6 installation to 10.7. You can then boot to the
external drive by rebooting with the option key held down. Try out Lion and see
what you think.

Experiment two (medium difficulty): Clean install of Lion using Migration
Assistant.
1) Attach a freshly formatted or freshly erased external drive. You can reuse
the drive from experiment one -- just run Disk Utility and erase its contents.
2) Run the OS X 10.7 Lion app and tell it to install to the external drive.
During the install the migration assistant will ask you if you want to port
data and apps from another Mac or a Windows PC.

Have a look at Daniel's post earlier in this thread. If you want to reinstall
only all you apps an leave out the cruft, port across only your email and data.
You will then have a clean Lion install with all your data but no apps.

This is the option I took. A word of warning, your iLife Apps are not ported
across. You will need either to do without them or purchase them from the Mac
App Store. If you haver purchased a new Mac that is already running Lion, the
purchase include the purchase of the iLife Apps from the App Store and you can
thus re-download them for free to you current computer.

Experiment three (hard): Clean install of Lion with no migration of data or apps

Proceed as in experiment two but when given the option to migrate data or apps
select not now.

This gives you a bare Lion install with no trace of your current data or apps.
You need to port across you contacts, calendars, email settings, Safari
bookmarks, iTunes music, and word processing files.

--- end of experiments ---

Believe it or not, once iCloud is introduced later this year, experiment three
will also be easy. We will be able to store our contacts, and calendars to the
cloud. Also you will be able to freshly download all of you iTunes purchase --
one can already re-download apps purchased from the Mac App Store. Finally from
within Apples iWork sweet (and from any other app that chooses to take
advantage of iCloud like Microsoft Office) you can choose to save any document
in iCloud and thus access it from any computer logged on with your Apple ID.

So you have many options to try out if you choose. If you are overwhelmed with
choice just go for experiment two. :-)

Cheers,
Carlo

Re: Lion Clean Install-advice please

2011-08-12 Thread cm
Hi Wammuggers,

I just wanted clear up possible confusion for anyone else who happens to
casually read this thread and might get the impression that the upgrade to OS X
10.7 Lion is a difficult move. The standard upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion is dead
easy and works very well for most situation. Just follow a slightly modified
version of Ronni's normal steps for an upgrade:

1. Download the Lion OS X 10.7 upgrade app from the Mac App Store.
2. Backup your system -- use Time Machine and / or a bootable clone to an
external disk.
3. Repair permissions before the upgrade.
4. Turn off Time Machine in System Preferences.
5. Unmount and disconnect any external USB and firewire drives.
6. Run the Lion OS X 10.7 upgrade app and apply it to your OS X10.6 (or
earlier) install.
7. Repair permissions again.
8. Run Software Update to get any upgrades to apps or point releases of the
operating system.
9. Reconnect your backup drive.
10. Turn on Time Machine in System Preferences and complete a backup.
(Optionally make another clone to a different external drive -- I did).

And that's it!

If as in Peter's case you want to trim down your apps you can do this before or
after the upgrade -- just remember to get a backup before you start deleting
stuff incase you go one step to far. :-) Peter on rethinking your situation, I
think this would be the easiest path for you as well.

You might also take the opportunity do go through your data files, movies,
photos and songs and delete duplicates and unwanted relics.

Cheers,
Carlo

With thanks to Ronni who's canonical upgrade steps I paraphrased above.

Lion Clean Install-advice please

2011-08-10 Thread Peter Sealy
I would much appreciate some advice on my proposal to clean install Lion. I
have not done an upgrade by clean install since so long ago I forget how to. I
shall have adequate safety precautions: (1) I have had Time Machine daily
backup on an external HDD for quite some time; (2) I have a daily SuperDuper
clone on another external HDD, (3) and before I commence upgrading I shall do
another clone [of some type] on another external HDD, this latter one to be the
source for data to be transferred to the new Lion OS on my iMac internal HDD by
FW. My iMac meets the requirements for Lion and I am running 10.6.8. I am aware
that I can install Lion over my current iMac HDD 10.6.8. But I am considering
taking the opportunity to leave behind the bits and pieces which have
undoubtedly littered the current OS. All my drives have plenty of space.

First step, I have read how to download Lion and make a DVD of Lion to be used
for install purpose. So I shall do this.

Option 1. Wipe the iMac HDD, reinstall 10.6 from the SL Install DVD, combo
update to 10.6.8 (I have retained the pkg of this update), then install Lion
(from my homemade Lion DVD) over that 10.6.8. That should give me a pristine
Lion. Is that so?

Option 2. Wipe the iMac HDD, then install Lion (from my homemade DVD) directly
onto my iMac HDD. That will give me a pristine Lion. Is that so?

Now I am unsure whether I can just do Option 2. I think I have read among the
gazillion web pages on Lion that such procedure is possible. Is that correct?
Obviously if so, there is no need to go the Option 1 route.

Sorry if that all sounds convoluted but I am unsure of the best way to proceed.

Next, having installed a pristine Lion on my iMac HDD, I now need to transfer
various data from one of my 10.6.8 clones. And this is where my senior moments
collide. Naturally I will have the Apple Lion software in place.

If I use Migration Assistant to transfer the obvious data how do I get my other
third-party applications into Lion. Can I just drag-drop each application from
the 10.6.8 clone to Lion and if so will the application create its own prefs
first time I start it up? I do have the necessary relevant serial numbers. I
have not purchased any apps from the Mac App Store.

I have not used Migration Assistant previously. So, for instance, does it
transfer all my emails and preferences [I use Apple's Mail.app] from the 10.6.8
clone to Lion's Mail.app?

Or is it better to not use Migration Assistant at all and just transfer by
drag-drop any data, applications, etc as I find I need them. I guess I am not
alone here in saying that I have over a long time downloaded many applications
on a 'May come in handy one day' basis and have never used and forgotten them.
So after a period of time if I have not transferred items to Lion I will feel
comfortable in eliminating them.

I would be grateful for any pointers on how to proceed. There seems to be any
number of web pages on upgrading but none that I have found give the kind of
Dummies level manual I am looking for. Perhaps someone here knows where I can
look.

Sorry for the long post.

Re: Lion Clean Install-advice please

2011-08-10 Thread Daniel Kerr

Hi Peter

Option two will work fine.
I did this on my MacPro, even from the straight download. Downloaded it to
my 10.6.8 on one drive and told it to install onto a second drive (that had
nothing on it).
So yes, option two erase and install from your DVD will work fine.

Moving your data and Applications over will be the fun part.
Generally you can't just drag and drop Applications I'm afraid as a lot of
them now have parts installed into other places on the System, so just
dragging it won't get these.
You have a few options really,..well quite a few but I'll mention two.

Option one. You could run Migration Assistant and get your data from one of
your clones. You can choose to Migrate everything, all your data and all
your Applications. This however, will bring over all your Applications,
including some (as you mention) that you may not want. You could then go
through and clean it up.

Option two. Migrate just your data only. You have the option to tell it not
to Migrate your Applications. (You'll still have the OSX Applications as
they would be there from the Lion install, well apart from iLife.
You would then need to reinstall iLife (from your iMac's DVD), and then go
through and reinstall any of the Applications you did want manually. This
takes a lot longer to do, but you get it all afresh. I do this every time
I get a new machine (about once a year). Takes a bit longer to do it, but
you get only your data coming with you, and everything new.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: Lion Clean Install-advice please

Hi Peter,

I also, on upgrading to Lion, took the opportunity to shed a lot of the cruft
that I had accumulated over the years. It is also a great opportunity to make
sure that applications that run in the background are only ported across if
absolutely necessary. Having said that I think Option 2 is your best bet -- I
will even offer a modification to it since I have sworn off large chunks of
plastic with low data density that go by the name of DVD.

You could :
1) Download the Lion OS X 10.7 app from the App Store to your current OS X10.6
install.
2) Make one last copy of your 10.6 install to an external drive so you can be
sure you have missed nothing.
3) Boot from the external drive with running 10.6 and run disk utility to erase
your internal drive
4) Run the Lion install app from you external drive and install an unmodified
copy of Lion to your internal drive.

You can then proceed to port the data and accounts across.

I am just on my way out but others can post on the data porting or I will write
again when I get back.

Cheers,
Carlo

airport ethernet network advice please

2007-10-28 Thread gary dorn

howdy
I was a fortunate buyer in the PLC sale last week and managed to
acquire a G3 ibook 500 with airport that fully works and charges to
100% . I also purchased an original Airport card for our 1.25 G4
Mirror door Powermac.

As I had an airport extreme base station 802.11n, I decided to set up
an airport network with our 3 computers during the week.

the hardware is setup as

netgear 4 port ADSL router- connected to web

Apple airport extreme base station - connected via ethernet to router

Macpro 2.66, OS10.4 connected to Airport base station via ethernet
cable ( does not have an airport extreme card yet) file sharing
turned on

Powermac G4 1.25, OS 10.4 connected to ADSL router via ethernet
cable, file sharing turned on ( this has an a airport card 802.11b
installed and have a airport connection with the ibook

ibook G3, 0S 10.3.9 with airport 802.11b wirelessly connected to
airport base station, file sharing turned on.

All 3 connected to the web fine.

Prior to setting up the airport network , file sharing worked okay
most of the time between MacPro G4 via ethernet ( both connected to
ADSL router)

But now file sharing does not work, even though the various servers
show up in the network panel.

so when I go Finder GOconnect to serverbrowseconnect
all I get is the ticking 120 sec countdown and no network connection

where have I gone wrong and what do I need to do to get File sharing to work.

Re: airport ethernet network advice please

2007-10-28 Thread Mervyn Giuliana Bond
In connecting from my iMac to our iBook I use the same steps as you
described below.
However, for a reason I haven't bothered to find out these steps do
not work in connecting from the iBook to the iMac.
Instead I click on the Finder icon in the Dock. The resulting window
has a Network button top left. I click on that and up comes the
iMac's name and a connection can be made.

Cheers
Merv

I was a fortunate buyer in the PLC sale last week and managed to
acquire a G3 ibook 500 with airport that fully works and charges to
100% . I also purchased an original Airport card for our 1.25 G4
Mirror door Powermac.

As I had an airport extreme base station 802.11n, I decided to set
up an airport network with our 3 computers during the week.

the hardware is setup as

netgear 4 port ADSL router- connected to web

Prior to setting up the airport network , file sharing worked okay
most of the time between MacPro G4 via ethernet ( both connected
to ADSL router)

But now file sharing does not work, even though the various
servers show up in the network panel.

so when I go Finder GOconnect to serverbrowseconnect
all I get is the ticking 120 sec countdown and no network connection

where have I gone wrong and what do I need to do to get File sharing to work.

Advice please :-)

2006-01-18 Thread McCallum Malcolm

Hi Wamuggers.

My son in law and daughter + Granddaughter are coming to stay while
their house is demolished and rebuilt. ;-) While they live with us
they want to join my wireless network. Their computer is a desktop
PC :-(. I could take an ethernet cable to their room but that would
be a fairly big undertaking and I wondered how I could do it via
wireless with the knowledge that in the new house they want to be
broadband and wireless so any equipment would need to be forward useful

I would be grateful for any advice from the group,
Mac

Hi Mac,

All they need to connect to your Airport Extreme Network is a
'Wireless card' installed on the PC.
If they using WindowsXP SP2 they will just see your Wireless Network
 connect.
I have a 'couple' of friends who us windowsXP they have no trouble
connecting to my Airport Network.

If they are WindowsXP SP2 let me know and I'll send you a PDF with
easy instructions.

Cheers,
Ronni

Advice please

2005-10-24 Thread Severin Crisp
At the moment I am dealing with very large Photoshop CS2 files, like
650MB, large intrinsic size, many layers, masks etc and my G4/400 is
really struggling, taking typically 5 minutes for a save. Long times
are spent with disk swapping and something like 2GB is swallowed up
by system and photoshop swap files. I have 1.3GB RAM and stacks of
free disk space. I realise that I really need more processor grunt
but wonder if the modest investment in bringing the RAM up to the
maximum 2GB will be a significant help.
Can anyone advise on this. Alternatively, of course if anyone has a
DP G5 that is not wanted I will happily accept it as a gift!

Thanks in advance, for the advice anyway, I live in hopes for the G5.

Sounds like your workflow is disk-bound. You can spring for a faster
hard disk (more RPM, more cache and/or lower access), or add more
memory.

512M PC133 SDRAM Memory = $95
Western Digital 120GB Hard Disk, 7200 RPM, 8 MB Cache, 8.5 ms access
= $95

Another strategy is to put the PS scratch file on a different, faster
hard disk.

Since the release of the new G5's you should be able to get good
deals out of ebay or perhaps your friendly neighbourhood Apple store:

A3 Printer advice please

2003-01-18 Thread Mike Murray

Hi

I'm thinking of getting an A3 inkjet printer for genealogy charts and
the like (not too bothered about photographic quality) Anyone out there
got an Epson 1160 or Canon S4500? Do they work with OS10.2.3? Any
problems? Are consumables expensive? Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks
Mike Murray

Diskwarrior v2 is excellent John. A good antivirus also such as Virex
(with updated virus definitions downloaded from their website). Many
of us will 'argue' regarding Nortons Utilities including Speed disk
etc. I actually use all 3 'major' players togetherie Diskwarrior,
Nortons Utilities and Techtool Pro 3. Then, again, I do push my
machine a little.

However, I cannot recommend Diskwarrior 2 enough. which I use as
part of regularly scheduled maintenance.

Of course, don't forget regular backups!!
