Routers
Hi All, I currently have a very old ADSL router supplied free when I first joined with Westnet some 8 years ago. Living in the country and 3 kms from our nearest local exchange with only ADSL 1 available currently, can anyone advise on a replacement router as my old one I fear is giving up the ghost. The Router is connected to an Airport Extreme with 2 x Airport Express linked to the wi-fi network to improve range and to run speakers. Many thanks in advance for any advice. David, I have had long and reliable, faithful service from a D-Link DSL 504 on ADSL 1 in Albany and I can highly recommend this, or what is probably now a later version. I am using it with an Airport Extreme. Severin Crisp NBN coming sometime - 2014 it seems. I would rather stick with what I have than have our planted verge dug up for a fibre cable and speed I do not need. Fibre to the node I would be happier with! Here's another question: This is my set up: Card Type:AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0xD6) Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 5.100.198.104.5) Locale: APAC Country Code: X1 Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n Supported Channels: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 149, 153, 157, 161, 165 A few weeks ago, access to Bigpond via a Thompson Gateway WiFi system died. I rang Bigpond and a very helpful fellow in the Phillipines went through all the usual diagnostics and got the system up and running. He then asked permission to take control of my laptop (granted) and he said Channel 1 was wrong and changed it to Ch11. Now it drops out every 30 minutes or so. How do I change it back and to what? Hi Bill, Is the Thompson Gateway WiFi handling your wireless Network or have you turned OFF wireless on the Thompson and are you using a Airport Extreme or Airport Express for your Wireless Network? If you are using the Thompson Gateway to handle your wireless network / connection to the Internet. Without knowing what model Thompson it is, you need to login to the Thompson through your Browser and locate the wireless configuration page and change the channel. The below instructions might vary slightly depending on which model Thompson Gateway Wi-Fi you have. 1. Open Safari 2. Type in the Address Bar the IP address of your Thomson Gateway (by default: 192.168.1.254). 3. If you have protected your Thomson Gateway with a user name and password, the Thomson Gateway will prompt you to enter these. Enter your user name and password and click OK. 4. The Thomson Gateway GUI appears. Then to Change the wireless channel: Proceed as follows: 1. On the left menu, click 'Home Network'. 2. Under Wireless, click your access point. (It will be listed in format: WLAN:Network Name Actual speed … example WLAN: Thompson83C7C7 (54Mbps) 3.The Wireless Access Point page appears. 4. In the Navigation bar, click Configure. 5. Under Configuration, select the channel of your choice in the Channel Selection list. 6. Click Apply. The channel you select will depend on what band your Wireless Network is operating on; the 5GHz or 2.4GHz band. As you have mentioned channel 1 11 I presume you are using only a 2.5GHz wireless network. The 2.4 GHz channels are numbered 1 − 13 (If you know what channel your neighbours are using try to go 2 channels above or below their channel.) Hi Bill, Channel 11 is normally the recommended channel for 802.11b/g 2.4GHz band. BUT if your nearest neighbours are also on Channel 11 it is best to select a channel 2 channels away from them. I do not see them in the network list and we are not the best of neighbours due to building work by us! But advice welcome. Hi Bill, Perhaps try Channel 13 The best way to do it is to test them all out. Usually the higher channels work better (11-13) Channels 1-5 overlap each other, as do: 2-6, 3-7, 4-8, 5-9, 6-10, 7-11. Non-overlapping sets: 1-6-11, 2-7, 3-8, 4-9, 5-10. In clearer terms, if you're still a bit confused: If the channel numbers are 5 or more apart, then they don't overlap each other. If they are less than 5 apart, they do and you'll get interference. Hi David, Just a thought but - if you are going to change your router, think about whether you might want to change your phone to VOIP and, if so, whether you want to look at a router that incorporates VOIP - Billion is one manufacturer which offers this. We did this several years ago with a Billion router and Internode's NodePhone VOIP service and it was all pretty easy to set-up and works well - and we too are in Albany and on ADSL1. Now Georgie can call her mum in Perth as often as she feels like and natter on for as long as she likes without running up a large Telstra bill ;o) Severin, I wouldn't hold my breath on getting NBN in Albany by 2014 - http://www.nbnco.com.au/rollout/rollout-map.html?address=Western+Australia% 2C+6330%2C+Australia Says: Work to commence within three years - we will commence work in your area from Dec 2014 in phases with last work scheduled to commence in Jun 2015*. It is estimated that the average time from work beginning to NBN services being available is 12 months. So the EARLIEST start is currently DEC 2014 with the service being available (on average) a year later. So even on their own projections we could expect the NBN to be actually available in the Albany in the first half of 2016! However, if you remember when they originally SAID we would get digital TV - and then when they ACTUALLY turned it on - then it wouldn't be that surprising if they don't actually meet their schedule ;o) Time will tell! I currently have a DECT base-set/answering machine (a similar vintage and also getting long in the tooth) plugged into the Billion - so the fact that the FRITZ!Box routers incorporate the phone base-set and answering machine would be an extra bonus. I have been very happy with the combined modem/router/voip set-up and wouldn't want to go to separate units - and Apple doesn't offer any combined modem/routers (with or without VoIP). I currently have a DECT base-set/answering machine (a similar vintage and also getting long in the tooth) plugged into the Billion - so the fact that the FRITZ!Box routers incorporate the phone base-set and answering machine would be an extra bonus. The manufacturer's page is http://fritzbox.com.au/product-fritz-wlan7390.html They seem to have some good reviews - but, then, they would hardly quote any bad reviews ;o) I would be interested to hear other's opinions. I just did a couple of checks at speedtest.net and got: Ping 56ms; Download 6.95 Mbps; Uplad; 0.32 Mbps (using Safari) Ping 34ms; Download 6.94 Mbps; Uplad; 0.33 Mbps (using Firefox) Interestingly, two test's on ZDNet's speedtest http://www1.zdnet.com.au/broadband/speedtest.htm Gave me a line speed of 1.3623 Mbps 1.4306 Mbps However, a couple of tests on another site http://www.ozspeedtest.com/ gave: Test run on 11/01/2012 @ 09:30 PM Mirror: Internode Data: 3 MB Test Time: 4.88 secs Your line speed is 5.02 Mbps (5019 kbps). Your download speed is 627 KB/s (0.61 MB/s). And Test run on 11/01/2012 @ 09:41 PM Mirror: Internode Data: 3 MB Test Time: 4.77 secs Your line speed is 5.13 Mbps (5132 kbps). Your download speed is 642 KB/s (0.63 MB/s). It seems like the ZDNet figures are way out (what do they give you?) Anyway, ignoring ZDNet, it seems I am getting much better than the 1500 knps I signed up for with my (no longer offered) plan. Another reason I'm happy with Internode - they advised me a while back that they would no longer be limiting the speed to 1500kbps and, although they offered me other plans, I can stay on the old plan which actually suits me better - until they get their own DSLAMs in the Albany exchange - but I'm not holding my breath ;o) It seems very strange that the Fritzbox would give you only 35% of the speed of the cheap Billion unit - have you compared all the relevant settings between the two? I have it in circuit but not fully operational - no phone set up yet - but it still does it's 8.5 Mb So what speed does your Billion give you ? I just got an email from Bob Howells who says his FRITZ!Box is testing a LOT slower than a cheap Billion unit (around 35%) - though he hasn't fully investigated all the settings, as yet. Neil I also have had Internode as ISP and VOIP for several years and quite content. I bought the Fritz 7390 and two Ftritz phones from Internode when these were first released by Internode for sale about 12 months ago. Mine have been working satisfactorily for most of that time except for a few minor hiccups which I am prepared to explain. One of those threads runs to 6 parts although the last 2 or 3 are more important. One thread discusses the rental deal of which you speak and the financial values. One, 2 parts, discusses the issues users have with the Fritz. All is not and has not been smooth sailing. That said, I stress I am quite content with mine. The Fritz has generated quite a bit of spirited discussion on Whirlpool since its release, and unlike a lot of Whirlpool stuff there are serious posts aplenty. Now, I have no wish to bore the pants off the kind folk on this list with my commentary on the Fritz saga so I am quite happy to send you a more cohesive comment off list if you wish. Dear WAMUGgers Many thanks to those who have responded to my question re ADSL modem/routers. I've done some web searching and have come up with a shortlist. There's some interesting reviews and comments around. Perhaps you might know of others. ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ (Incl) Compatible Modem/Routers Billion 74022 yr warranty ADSL speed 8mbps to 30 with ADSL2+ $190-250 Netgear DG834 (v2) 1 yr warranty don't know speeds$130 - $190 DLink 504T May not be here yet but is ADSL2 and 2+ compatible 8mbps with adsl other unknown Zyxel Prestige 660H ADSL2 speed 12, ADSL2+ speed 24 Other Netcomm NB 5 looks good but is only usb and single ethernet. I have the alcatel speed touch pro 4 port modem/router from Telstra running 2 windoze and a 5500 mac. No problems at all, works a dream. The set up disc that they supply is not brilliant as you still have to put in your own settings (at least I did). Appletalk on, connection by ethernet. Hubs are available for $100 these days. Hi everyone, I have alcatel ADSL speed pro with four port switch hub. I having problem with my ADSL modem, sometimes that is stop transferring data between Netgear router and ADSL modem but still flashing lights (TX/RX).
