Routers

2012-04-23 Thread David Wood
Hi All,

I currently have a very old ADSL router supplied free when I first joined with
Westnet some 8 years ago. Living in the country and 3 kms from our nearest
local exchange with only ADSL 1 available currently, can anyone advise on a
replacement router as my old one I fear is giving up the ghost.

The Router is connected to an Airport Extreme with 2 x Airport Express linked
to the wi-fi network to improve range and to run speakers.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

David, I have had long and reliable, faithful service from a D-Link DSL 504 on
ADSL 1 in Albany and I can highly recommend this, or what is probably now a
later version. I am using it with an Airport Extreme.

NBN coming sometime - 2014 it seems. I would rather stick with what I have
than have our planted verge dug up for a fibre cable and speed I do not need.
Fibre to the node I would be happier with!

A few weeks ago, access to Bigpond via a Thompson Gateway WiFi system died. I
rang Bigpond and a very helpful fellow in the Phillipines went through all the
usual diagnostics and got the system up and running. He then asked permission
to take control of my laptop (granted) and he said Channel 1 was wrong and
changed it to Ch11. Now it drops out every 30 minutes or so.

How do I change it back and to what?

Re: Routers

2012-04-23 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Bill,

Is the Thompson Gateway WiFi handling your wireless Network or have you turned
OFF wireless on the Thompson and are you using a Airport Extreme or Airport
Express for your Wireless Network?

If you are using the Thompson Gateway to handle your wireless network /
connection to the Internet.
Without knowing what model Thompson it is, you need to login to the Thompson
through your Browser and locate the wireless configuration page and change the
channel.

The below instructions might vary slightly depending on which model Thompson
Gateway Wi-Fi you have.

1. Open Safari
2. Type in the Address Bar the IP address of your Thomson Gateway (by default:
192.168.1.254).
3. If you have protected your Thomson Gateway with a user name and password,
the Thomson Gateway will prompt you to enter these. Enter your user
name and password and click OK.
4. The Thomson Gateway GUI appears.

Then to Change the wireless channel:

Proceed as follows:

1. On the left menu, click 'Home Network'.
2. Under Wireless, click your access point. (It will be listed in format:
WLAN:Network Name Actual speed … example WLAN: Thompson83C7C7 (54Mbps)
3.The Wireless Access Point page appears.
4. In the Navigation bar, click Configure.
5. Under Configuration, select the channel of your choice in the Channel
Selection list.
6. Click Apply.

The channel you select will depend on what band your Wireless Network is
operating on; the 5GHz or 2.4GHz band.
As you have mentioned channel 1 11 I presume you are using only a 2.5GHz
wireless network.

The 2.4 GHz channels are numbered 1 − 13 (If you know what channel your
neighbours are using try to go 2 channels above or below their channel.)
The 5GHz channels are numbered 36 − 165 (149 is normally considered best )

Cheers,

Hi Bill,

Channel 11 is normally the recommended channel for 802.11b/g 2.4GHz band.
BUT if your nearest neighbours are also on Channel 11 it is best to select a
channel 2 channels away from them.

Re: Routers

2012-04-23 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Bill,

Perhaps try Channel 13
The best way to do it is to test them all out.
Usually the higher channels work better (11-13)

Channels 1-5 overlap each other, as do: 2-6, 3-7, 4-8, 5-9, 6-10, 7-11.
Non-overlapping sets: 1-6-11, 2-7, 3-8, 4-9, 5-10.

In clearer terms, if you're still a bit confused: If the channel numbers are 5
or more apart, then they don't overlap each other.
If they are less than 5 apart, they do and you'll get interference.

Cheers,
Ronni

If you are using the Thompson Gateway to handle your wireless network /
 connection to the Internet.
Without knowing what model Thompson it is, you need to login to the
Thompson through your Browser and locate the wireless configuration page
 and change the channel.

The below instructions might vary slightly depending on which model
 Thompson Gateway Wi-Fi you have.

 1. Open Safari
 2. Type in the Address Bar the IP address of your Thomson Gateway (by
 default: 192.168.1.254).
 3. If you have protected your Thomson Gateway with a user name and
password, the Thomson Gateway will prompt you to enter these.
Enter your user name and password and click OK.

Re: Routers

2012-04-23 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi David,

Just a thought but - if you are going to change your router, think about
whether you might want to change your phone to VOIP and, if so, whether you
want to look at a router that incorporates VOIP - Billion is one
manufacturer which offers this.

We did this several years ago with a Billion router and Internode's
NodePhone VOIP service and it was all pretty easy to set-up and works well -
and we too are in Albany and on ADSL1.

Now Georgie can call her mum in Perth as often as she feels like and natter
on for as long as she likes without running up a large Telstra bill ;o)

Severin,

I wouldn't hold my breath on getting NBN in Albany by 2014 -
http://www.nbnco.com.au/rollout/rollout-map.html?address=Western+Australia%
2C+6330%2C+Australia
Says:
Work to commence within three years - we will commence work in your area
from Dec 2014 in phases with last work scheduled to commence in Jun 2015*.

It is estimated that the average time from work beginning to NBN services
 being available is 12 months.

So the EARLIEST start is currently DEC 2014 with the service being available
(on average) a year later. So even on their own projections we could expect
the NBN to be actually available in the Albany in the first half of 2016!

However, if you remember when they originally SAID we would get digital TV
- and then when they ACTUALLY turned it on - then it wouldn't be that
surprising if they don't actually meet their schedule ;o)

Time will tell!

Cheers

FRITZ!Box routers - sounds good??

2012-01-11 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi all,

I have used Internode as my ISP and VoIP provider for many years and I am
very happy with them (I just hope that iiNet don't stuff them up!)

I have just received a newsletter from them which drew my attention to a new
router they are offering:
http://www.internode.on.net/products/fritzbox/

There seems to be two versions - the 7270
http://www.internode.on.net/products/fritzbox/fritzbox_7270/

FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270 delivers the ideal residential or home office
 communications solution.

FRITZ!Box 7270The most advanced broadband gateway for your residential or home
 office networking solution.

The entry-level FRITZ!Box delivers a comprehensive Internet solution with
setup and configuration as simple as possible. Its extensive network features
include Ethernet, high speed 'N' WiFi, and a USB port for a print or file
 server.

The advanced phone system features include NodePhone VoIP support using up to
two analogue phones and 6 DECT cordless phones (DECT base station built in!).

And the 7390
http://www.internode.on.net/products/fritzbox/fritzbox_7390/

FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7390 is the flagship of the FRITZ!Box range, with Gigabit
Ethernet, VDSL, and two USB ports.

FRITZ!Box 7390The next generation broadband gateway for home office or small
 business.

This flagship FRITZ!Box offers a comprehensive Internet solution with setup
and configuration as simple as possible. Its extensive network features
include Gigabit Ethernet, high speed 'N' WiFi, and two USB ports for print and
 file servers.

The advanced phone system features include NodePhone VoIP support using up to
two analogue phones and 6 DECT cordless phones (DECT base station built in!)

The main differences between the two appear to be that the 7390 offers
gigabyte ethernet, two USB ports rather than one and dual-band 2.4Ghz and
5Ghz Wi-Fi.

At present I use a Billion BiPAC 7402VGP VoIP/802.11g ADSL2+ Firewall
Router, which has worked very well for me. It is, however, now 6 years old -
so I have been considering upgrading before too long. When I first set this
up it used to run for months on end without problems but recently I have
experienced problems where all the status lights LOOK OK but I have lost the
internet - in every case a rebbot of the router has fixed the problem - but
it happens a lot more frequently than it used to.

I'm not sure whether the problem is the router or line glitches and it
doesn't (yet) happen often enough to be a concern - hwever it did make me
realise that at 6 years old the router was getting a bit long in the tooth -
computer years being a bit like dog years ;o)

So... Does anyone have any experience thoughts on these units?

I have been very happy with the combined modem/router/voip set-up and
wouldn't want to go to separate units - and Apple doesn't offer any combined
modem/routers (with or without VoIP). I currently have a DECT
base-set/answering machine (a similar vintage and also getting long in the
tooth) plugged into the Billion - so the fact that the FRITZ!Box routers
incorporate the phone base-set and answering machine would be an extra
bonus.

The manufacturer's page is
http://fritzbox.com.au/product-fritz-wlan7390.html

They seem to have some good reviews - but, then, they would hardly quote any
bad reviews ;o)

I would be interested to hear other's opinions.

Cheers

Re: FRITZ!Box routers - sounds good??

2012-01-11 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Bob,

That is interesting.

I just did a couple of checks at speedtest.net and got:

Ping 56ms; Download 6.95 Mbps; Uplad; 0.32 Mbps (using Safari)
Ping 34ms; Download 6.94 Mbps; Uplad; 0.33 Mbps (using Firefox)

Interestingly, two test's on ZDNet's speedtest
http://www1.zdnet.com.au/broadband/speedtest.htm
Gave me a line speed of 1.3623 Mbps 1.4306 Mbps

However, a couple of tests on another site http://www.ozspeedtest.com/
gave:
 Test run on 11/01/2012 @ 09:30 PM
 Mirror: Internode
 Data: 3 MB
 Test Time: 4.88 secs
Your line speed is 5.02 Mbps (5019 kbps).
 Your download speed is 627 KB/s (0.61 MB/s).

And

 Test run on 11/01/2012 @ 09:41 PM
 Mirror: Internode
 Data: 3 MB
 Test Time: 4.77 secs
Your line speed is 5.13 Mbps (5132 kbps).
 Your download speed is 642 KB/s (0.63 MB/s).

It seems like the ZDNet figures are way out (what do they give you?)

Anyway, ignoring ZDNet, it seems I am getting much better than the 1500 knps
I signed up for with my (no longer offered) plan. Another reason I'm happy
with Internode - they advised me a while back that they would no longer be
limiting the speed to 1500kbps and, although they offered me other plans, I
can stay on the old plan which actually suits me better - until they get
their own DSLAMs in the Albany exchange - but I'm not holding my breath ;o)

It seems very strange that the Fritzbox would give you only 35% of the speed
of the cheap Billion unit - have you compared all the relevant settings
between the two?

Cheers

Only the DSL did not work , the Print server was still OK and the USB storage

Difficult to test and I asked my ISP - Amnet for the results of their tests .

There is a bit of a story in Ballajura - Amnet have to use Telstra ,
so it was a full day and a half before they got Telstra at the exchange to
confirm their gear was OK .

At that stage I imposed on a Neighbour to see if the modem would synch on his

This time it was a NO GO so I took the modem back for a warranty exchange (

I set it up and was a happy chappy UNTIL I did a speed check at
 Speedtest.net

The cheap Billionhit 8.5 Mb down line .

The Fritzbox only ever has done 2.98 Mb down line .

Not impressed , so when the replacement Fritzbox arrived yesterday , after it
 was set up
the first check was to speedtest.net

No change - the replacement still only does 2.98 Mb

There can be all sorts of reasons , and I still can try some changes in the
 settings ,
but I was waiting until today when a separate Voip attachment arrived that
 will allow
me to use voip with the cheap modem .

I have it in circuit but not fully operational - no phone set up yet -
but it still does it's 8.5 Mb

Hi Roger,

That is good to hear.

I just got an email from Bob Howells who says his FRITZ!Box is testing a LOT
slower than a cheap Billion unit (around 35%) - though he hasn't fully
investigated all the settings, as yet.

What sort of result does speedtest.net give you?

I also have had Internode as ISP and VOIP for several years and quite content.
I bought the Fritz 7390 and two Ftritz phones from Internode when these were
first released by Internode for sale about 12 months ago. Mine have been
working satisfactorily for most of that time except for a few minor hiccups
which I am prepared to explain.

I suggest you first do some serious background reading in the Whirlpool forums:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/?action=threads_searchq=fritzf=68fg=-1
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1691529
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1846249
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1803653
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1704707

Those references are a bit mixed up/out of order I'm afraid. One of those
threads runs to 6 parts although the last 2 or 3 are more important. One thread
discusses the rental deal of which you speak and the financial values. One, 2
parts, discusses the issues users have with the Fritz. All is not and has not
been smooth sailing. That said, I stress I am quite content with mine.

The Fritz has generated quite a bit of spirited discussion on Whirlpool since
its release, and unlike a lot of Whirlpool stuff there are serious posts
aplenty.

Now, I have no wish to bore the pants off the kind folk on this list with my
commentary on the Fritz saga so I am quite happy to send you a more cohesive
comment off list if you wish. Just let me know.

ADSL Modem/Routers

2005-02-28 Thread Reg Whitely

Dear WAMUGgers

Many thanks to those who have responded to my question re ADSL
modem/routers.

I've done some web searching and have come up with a shortlist. There's
some interesting reviews and comments around. Perhaps you might know of
others.

ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ (Incl) Compatible Modem/Routers
Billion 74022 yr warranty ADSL speed 8mbps to 30 with
ADSL2+ $190-250
Netgear DG834 (v2) 1 yr warranty don't know speeds$130 - $190
DLink 504T May not be here yet but is ADSL2 and 2+ compatible 8mbps
with adsl other unknown

Zyxel Prestige 660H ADSL2 speed 12, ADSL2+ speed 24

Other
Netcomm NB 5 looks good but is only usb and single ethernet. Perhaps
others are on their way.

What I need to do is have four home computers hitting the web at the

If I can cut costs and work with the alcatel modem that is fine, it

You can just hang a hub off the end of the router, assuming the
router supports NAT.

Hubs are available for $100 these days.
