Yes, it is a good feature of an Airport Extreme.  It should be noted  
that although you can share multiple drives this way through a hub you  
can not make one of those drives a Time Machine drive and effectively  
convert to a Time Capsule.  A minor drawback

Yes TimeMachine is handled by a separate LAN cabled HD via AirPort Extreme, 

the trial HD I connected to the usb port hasn't shown up so I will have to look 
for a setting somewhere...

Brian, I think there is something in the setting up sequence of  
Airport Extreme but I do not recall where.  I set this up though I am  
not currently using it.

You could be correct on that one it said something about that when I 
re-downloaded the user-guide, I may have to re-setup the Airport again.

Looking to network USB HDs and the answer was under my nose all the time I 
looked up Airport BaseStation Extreme in the Apple Store and :
