iPhone 4 and iPod Touch Find my iPhone app
Hi all, I have an anomaly occurring and not sure if it is something I am/ am not doing or otherwise. I have an iPhone 4 (iOS 4.3.7) and kids each have an iPod Touch 4th generation (all iOS5). all 4 machines have Find My iPhone app installed. The iPhone for the moment cannot be upgraded to iOS5 (company phone) and the iPod Touch's are all iOS5. I have reviewed the troubleshooting page on the Apple site for issues and reviewed them over and over and verified settings on all units. The issue is this. when I do a search for units in the app (on any one of the 4 units) - it ALWAYS locates the iPhone - never fails, but one of the iPod Touch units doesn't exist and the other two report on the screen, but location cannot be found (red dot). I have confirmed date setting, Location services ON, units connected to WiFi. Still unable to locate the two units (that exist) and cannot get the 4th unit to report as existing on the other units' screens. Not a train wreck for me yet, but a friend recently lost their iPhone and successfully locked it remotely and others have found theirs using this app. So I am keen to get it sorted and operating reliably. Many of the reviews rate the app very poorly as flaky and not reliable. It seems that way to me, but I am sure there must be something (or a number of things) resulting in the status I have here. Does anyone have any experience with this app and suffered these issues and subsequently resolved them? Grateful for any feedback on this. Re: iPhone 4 and iPod Touch Find my iPhone app
Hi Peter, I have had only good experiences with Find My iPhone. I just checked now and all my listed portable devices and MacBook Pro are shown safely at home. There are two ways to locate your equipment, one is using the web interface at iCloud.com and the other is with the Find My iPhone app running on an iOS device. A chief difference between the iPhone and the iPod Touch is that the iPhone has a GPS module, and cell phone unit and so can potentially be located to within a metre or two whereas location by triangulation of WiFi hotspots used by the iPod Touch and MacBook is OK to within one or two hundred metres. While you trying to set things up you may have more luck using the web interface so as to cut out the app and possible connection problems you may get on your iOS device. I can only suggest that you try turning the location service off and then back on for each device in turn and see if it shows up on the iCloud web site. For the iPod Touch devices with iOS 5, make sure you are logged into iCloud in the iCloud settings screen and turn on the Find My iPhone setting -- or cycle it off and then on if it is already on. Re: reverting to older version of iPhone app (was Bento 4)
Thanks Carlo. I decided to revert and followed your instructions with no problems except step 3. I deleted both apps from iTunes and the iPhone, confirming both deletes. When I started step 3 to sync the iPhone minus Bento, up popped a message box saying that the iPhone had downloaded items that were no longer on iTunes and did I want to bring them across? I can't remember exactly what it said; sorry; but that was the gist of it. As I knew I hadn't downloaded any thing I rejected it. I cancelled the sync using the slider on the iPhone, waited what seemed like ages whilst iTunes still indicated it was backing up my iPhone. When it finally said it was safe to disconnect I then dragged the old app from finder into the iTunes Library and re-synced the iPhone. I then opened Bento on both devices and had to set up from anew again and sync which took about 37mins but now all is well and my latest book additions are on my iPhone so I wont double up. As an afterthought - I have just realised that I had, in fact, updated some data on an app (bus timetables) via 3G on Friday so maybe that was what the message was about? But that doesn't make sense as I hadn't synced since then anyway. I've just done another sync and the message didn't come up but the data is still on the iPhone anyway. I also checked and compared the app size and worked out the content of the Bento app when I synced was 1.45GB! Many thanks again Carlo. (PS - I'm already missing the look of the new Bento app. Must upgrade to Bento 4 soon.) In the successive pop-ups select Remove and then Move to Trash. 2) Delete the app from your iPhone -- press and hold the App icon until it jiggles, then select the X at the top left of the icon and confirm the delete. 3) You can sync your iPhone now to save any version confusion (I am not sure if this step is necessary) 4) Drag the .ipa file of your old version to the Library pane at the top left of iTunes. 5) Sync your iPhone again to install the old version to the phone. Re: reverting to older version of iPhone app (was Bento 4)
Hi again Pete, I should have mentioned. That message that you received when syncing implies that you either purchased or updated an app directly on your iPhone without a corresponding purchase or updated on iTunes. The updated app would have been transferred to iTunes. If Bento was correctly deleted on both devices, it was likely a different app that you updated. I wouldn't worry, though, as it will pester you until everything is back in synchrony. And yes, in my experience also, canceling a sync takes way more time than you would expect unless you catch it right at the start. Re: iPhone app - Game Center ???
Hi Neil Although, this doesn't actually get rid of it completely, if you don't want to see the icons for the things you use, this is another way to do it. NOTE!!! I haven't tried this, and as it's using some modification code, be very wary that it could break things. So always back up, and be aware. (That's just to cover me if anything goes wrong should someone try it,...I'm just providing the info.) :o) The iPhone doesn't need to be Jailbroken, which is quite handy. Worth a read anyway:- http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100719201209193 But yes, throwing them into an unwanted folder, tends to be the easiest way to deal with it. :o) Kind Regards Daniel On 23/9/10 2:53 PM, Neil Houghton n...@possumology.com wrote: Hi Ronni, Hehe it¹s OK, I can take it hope today¹s going better. I'm still getting to grips with how the iPhone SHOULD work though - so I think I'll wait a while before I think about changing things too much ;o) It's quite funny - this is my first mobile phone - the other half had been nagging for a while if you had a mobile phone, I would have been able to let you know I was going to be late! - but I decided that if I was going to have one it would have to be an iPhone and the first iterations didn't really do it for me - you just KNEW that the next one would be so much better - so when the iPhone 4 was released, I was finally happy that the feature set was worth the money. So, now I've had the phone 4 weeks and I've had lots of fun making up playlists and transferring music, checking out various apps, deciding which free case to go for, and generally playing with my new toy. I have to say it's great fun, however, to date, I've made 1 phone call, sent one email (a test!), missed one phone call (the other half) received one real SMS (the other half saying You actually supposed to answer your phone when it rings. Where are you. plus a couple of Telsta SMSs... so, given all my data has been over the home wireless network, my $49 cap plan with Telstra is hardly being maxed out!!! I dare say that actual phone usage will increase over time ;o) Cheers Neil (who didn't grow up in a shoebox in't middle of t'road - but who does remember having to walk down the road to the phonebox in the unlikely event he wanted to make a phone call - the parents only had the phone put in when I went away to uni, in London) -- Neil R. Re: iPhone app - Game Center ???
Ah Neil, now I understand your 'surprise' about 'Game Center' added in Software on the iPhone. You have never had a Mobile Phone, so have never experienced all the 'Tools, icons, and stuff' that are on Mobile Phones. I always had Nokia mobiles, prior to owning an iPhone, and they had 'stuff' on them I never wanted or used. I just hid them as you can do on the iPhone. Use your iPhone, you will enjoy the experience ;-) Cheers, Ronni On 24/09/2010, at 11:25 AM, Neil Houghton wrote: Thanks for that Daniel. iPhone app - Game Center ???
I'm confused... A new app has suddenly appeared on my iPhone - it is called Game Centre - I have not downloaded it and it doesn't appear in my apps section in iTunes - though I can see it on the iPhone when connected to iTunes. If I open the app it wants me to sign-in with my Apple ID account - so presumably it is an Apple app? - but why did it suddenly appear on my iPhone! I have absolutely no interest in games (either on my iPhone or Computer) - so I would like to just delete the app - how do I do that? Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Re: iPhone app - Game Center ???
Hi Neil, Andrew is correct. Game Center iOS SDK 4 includes the Game Kit APIs that allow you to create apps that will work with Game Center, Apple's new social gaming network. Your users can invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through auto-matching, track their achievements, and compare their best scores on a leaderboard. http://www.pcworld.com/article/193896/iphone_game_center_os_4s_breakthrough_feature.html Sent from Ronni's iPad On 22/09/2010, at 7:52 PM, Andrew sprint9...@iinet.net.au wrote: Hi Neil I think it's part of the latest software update. Re: iPhone app - Game Center ???
Yes the software update (iOS4.1) was certainly required if you wanted apps on your iPhone 3G or 3GS to run again at a reasonable speed after the iOS 4 upgrade. Admittedly there were hacks suggested to solve the slowing problem just prior to release of the update but they seemed to be uncertain and unverified. peter meyer 0408 902349 pmo...@westnet.com.au On 23/09/2010, at 12:20 PM, Neil Houghton wrote: on 22/9/10 10:03 PM, Ronda Brown at ro...@mac.com wrote: Hi Neil Stuart, You cannot delete Game Centre.
