Re: 18-34...and the rest of us?
Over the weekend, a story broke about the 18 to 34 demographic and its important to TV execs...and a TV Land study that suggests the idea behind it is highly overrated. Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they believe that most TV programming and advertising is targeted toward people under 40, the survey said. More than 80 percent of adults over 40 say they have a hard time finding TV shows that reflect their lives. Full story at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15806591/ Why am I bringing this up here? Because this comes just after TV Land dropped The Andy Griffith Show from its prime time lineup...then brought it back after a fan uproar. I have to believe there's a connection. Re: A couple of Mayberry references
Even though they don't make TV like they used to, I still watch a lot of modern day television. But you can imagine my surprise when I saw Desperate Housewives last night, and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) was trying to convince a skeptical police detective that a guy across the street was up to no good. She eventually got frustrated and called him...you guessed it...Barney Fife. That's definitely one place I never expected to hear a Mayberry reference. (There *is* a Mayfield reference on Wisteria Lane, though: the Cleaver House is in the neighborhood.) Did I mention the Mayberry reference in the movie trailer for the big screen Reno 911: Miami? The deputy called Junior quips that riding the streets of Reno is a lot like Mayberry, except everyone's on meth and prostitution is legal. A Special Friendship
Once a month I conduct the Back to Mayberry Bible Study at a senior citizen retirement community. All the participants are 80 years of age or older. Invariably our discussions almost always get around to the topic of friendships. This past week we talked about the importance of long time friends and how difficult it is to develop these long term friendships in a time when people are so mobile. Our discussion got me thinking about the wonderful friendship that exists between Aunt Bee and Clara Edwards. They have been best friends since their early days at Sweet Briar Normal. They played on the basketball team together, and in those younger years they must have spent many hours talking and giggling over the beaus in their young lives. Then as the years passed, they most likely had to say good bye as many young people do as they go their separate ways. But then when Aunt Bee moves to Mayberry to live with Andy and Opie, her close friendship with Clara is once again renewed. Although Aunt Bee and Clara are very dear friends, they certainly have their differences. They are very competitive with one another when it comes to entering pickles in the county fair or roses in the garden club contests. Yet even when Clara wins the grand prize for the best rose, she relinquishes her prize to Aunt Bee when she learns the story about Aunt Bee's rose being destroyed. Only a true friend could be such a gracious loser as was Clara Edwards in that touching gesture of friendship. Sometimes they even have their differences over the men in their lives. Who can forget the jealousy that Clara felt when Professor St. John became enamored with Aunt Bee? When Aunt Bee decided to wear a wig when the visiting minister came to Mayberry, once again a rivalry began between Aunt Bee and Clara. Despite their many differences and petty squabbles, Clara Edwards and Aunt Bee Taylor remain true friends. They do not let their differences come between them. While Clara gave up the rose contest for her friend, Aunt Bee gave up the roll of Miss Mayberry for her friend. Each was willing to sacrifice something that was very important in order for a friend to come first. Clara persuaded Aunt Bee to run for the town council because she truly believed in her friend. Aunt Bee agonized on her decision as to who to take to Mexico with her because she did not want to hurt Clara's feelings, knowing she was such a good friend. When Andy was having a difficult time with Opie and his band, it was Clara who Aunt Bee turned to for guidance and advice. Together Aunt Bee and Clara wrote the beautiful song My Home Town. Neither could have done that alone. So much is always said about the friendship between Andy and Barney. But I think it is important to remember that special and very close friendship that exists between Aunt Bee and Clara. They were seen together in many episodes of TAGS and quite often we forget how important Clara was to Aunt Bee. Barney once told Andy that it is the friendships that we develop when we are young that really last. This is certainly true when it comes to the friendship between Aunt Bee and Clara. I think one of the most touching scenes in all of TAGS is when Aunt Bee and Clara are sitting on the porch and they sing their song about Sweet Briar. During this week of giving special thanks, be sure to take a few moments to thank those old friends of yours. Thank them for being your friend. Do it today if you have the chance because tomorrow may be too late. Kenneth G. This and That
Greetings From the Dime Store, First to my friend John Masters, may I ask if you specifically have a special piece that you ordered all the way from New York City for me and the girls to sing? Not that me and Lydia and Viola Slatt are particularly good singers, but we'll give it all we got. You know we will. Between Barney and the Untrained Voice, Mrs. Poltice's time is all taken up, but maybe Hazel could work us in for a couple of practice sessions. Now, Dixon, about those family pictures. I meant on a regular basis that family pictures were not shown on the walls or featured in any kind of prominent place where viewers could easily see them each week. Yeah, for a special show, every now and then, a series might pull out a photograph. But it's not the usual thing. Not then and not now. The only exception that I recall is that show which starred the Olsen twins (and for the life of me I cannot think of its title just now) but I do remember seeing photographs of the kids on the mantle or somewhere else in the living room. But the last show of Leave It To Beaver was entitled, The Family Album and it gave the series a chance to feature a flash-back. Anyway, Thanksgiving is almost here and if I don't have a chance to tell you all, I've been here for a number of years. I love you all and I thank Allan for the good work he does in keeping us all together. You all have a safe and joyous holiday with your real family and our family here in Mayberry, which is almost just as precious to me, will be here for us, as always. Barney`s catch phrase`s
Here`s my favorite A wink is as good as a nod to a blind mule... It was used in the Barney`s replacement episode I also heard from Aunt Bee that she got on `ole Ang for not being very christian like when it came to Neil Bentley, so the rumors are true and Mr Bentley is still around Mayberry and doing a healthy business. It`s a good thing he brought all those new cards back from the big city and he proberly looks real spiffy in that new suit. Courthouse and tree
Just recieved my Mayberry Courthouse from Hawthorne Villages today looks real nice. This past weekend our Paulding County Historical Society had a festival of trees, so My tree this year was TheAndy Griffith Show I decorated it with some of my Andy Griffith Show Cards, I had to punch a hole in them to put ribbons on for hangers, Also had the show logo ornament. I made the star for the top look like a Maberry Sheriff's badge. My life size poster of Barney stood beside the tree guarding it. the door mat that says Knock real loud we're watching The Andy Griffith Show was on the floor for the tree skirt. I took pictures if anyone wants to see it email me and I will email the picture to you. the people working at the Historical Society said they had lots of good comments about it. Something's Up
Both Andy and Don were masters of the something's up look. If it was Andy, he most often about to pull something on Barney, but I remember it also when Andy figured something out. If Barney gave the look it usually meant that he was about to try one of his dumb ideas (Gomer's description, not mine). When executed by these 2 fine actors, the looks did as much to move the story as the dialog did. I wonder if the look was scripted by the writer or if it came from the director? And if it was a standard device on the set (OK, Don, when you deliver that last line, give us the look.) dan ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Please Don't Cry, It Moves Your Hair
Dog gone you, Untrained Voice. With what you wrote yesterday, you made all of us at the Dime Store cry and you know how Lydia hates to cry. She don't mind gettin' a little weepy-eyed, but she hates to cry. Even Mr. Schwump broke down so hard his hair piece had to be adjusted. Now that's hard crying. We just wanted you to know, we love and appreciate you, too. Got to go. The girls have started up again and when they start, Mr. Schwump starts, and oh, lordy, it's a mess around here.
