Taylor Home Inn Stay

2010-07-26 Thread Ken Anderson
We had just a great stay at the Taylor Home Inn again this week. James Best
and his wife Dorothy were there as well as another great couple. Marsha was
her usual fantastic hostess. I have no idea how she does everything she
does. Must be the Mayberry in her. I am sure Marsha will be posting about
her special guest so I won't say anything more other than as usual we came
home so full of Mayberry hospitality and love we were just dripping of it.

Our BIG weekend with Mr. Best

2010-07-26 Thread Marsha Scheuermann
We had the BEST weekend! Saturday we had the immense privilege of having
James and Dorothy Best stay with us here at the Taylor Home Inn, and no
preconcieved idea that I had could ever measure up to the real event - James
and Dorothy could not have been any nicer or more accommodating than they
were, and it was a real treat to be able to celebrate his birthday a couple
of days early by having a few friends and fans of his over for a cookout.
We were able to take photos of Jimmy and his beautiful wife with each of the
other attendees, and they had some merchandise we could purchase. I bought
his book, a print of his wonderful painting of the squad car at Myer's Lake
with Mt. Pilot in the distance, and a couple of autographed photos. What a
thrill to have him hand me his book in person! One of the highlights for
me, though, occurred when it was time for him to leave (he had some fishing
he needed to get caught up on) - not because he had to leave, but because he
put his arms around me, gave me a big ol' bear hug, and smooched me on the
forehead!

After he left with my friend who took him fishing, Dorothy stayed at the inn
for awhile and she, Ken and Linda Anderson and I all sat around and
chit-chatted. (Apparently she doesn't hate chit-chatting or ordinary
conversation...) I didn't know until then that she has quite an
actor's resume' herself! She was in an episode of Leave It To Beaver
as the Beaver's girlfriend. In fact, her parents were vaudevillian
performers so she's been in show business since she was around 5 years old,
she said. You couldn't meet a more personable person than Dorothy, and my
only regret was that it ended far too soon.

Thank you, Jim Clark, for telling them about our place, and thanks to
everyone for letting me gush about my weekend. I'm still floating about 3
feet above the ground...

I will post pix on the Facebook page for the inn, so if you want to see some
of them, look for the fan page for Taylor Home Inn. The Bests are going
to post a pic of them with our little Miss Ellie Walker (our miniature
schnauzer) on the pets page of their website. Ellie took to Dorothy like a
duck to water; she knows a nice person when she sees one!

RE: Calvin Coolidge and Floyd

2010-07-26 Thread Harriet Browder

I just saw Howard McN on an old episode (like there's any other kind) of Peter
Gunn. His character

had a picture in his house of Our President. It was, of course, Calvin
Coolidge.

If Calvin Coolidge had a Facebook page I bet Floyd would be updating it every
morning!

Skippy

2010-07-26 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. My Dad (80 yrs. young) loves his westerns. While at his
house yesterday he was watching Outlaw Josie Wales. Playing a rather loose
girl in a saloon was our own fun girl, Skippy (Joyce Jameson). Others have
probably seen it before. It's interesting to watch TV shows and movies from the
60's and 70's and find Mayberry actors. I find myself doing it more often.

Was that the one where Howard played an antique dealer? If so I missed
Calvin! But I did catch something in that same episode: an old, creepy
landlady flirts with Peter Gunn while he's checking out an apartment building.

re: Laundry service

2010-07-26 Thread PLV
I think that's a great question! I do remember that, during that same time
period of the early '60s, my best friend's stay-at-home mother had her
husband's shirts picked up laundered by our local dry cleaner because he was
a very meticulous and officious accountant who worked for one of the largest
insurance companies in downtown Chicago and demanded that his shirts be
professionally pressed starched to the nth degree. [Actually, as I'm
remembering him now I realize he could have passed for Barney - short,
skinny/wiry, and a little too impressed with his own importance at times!] But
Andy sure never wore pressed starched shirts, so maybe his official uniform
pants needed more pressing than Aunt Bee wanted to deal with?

After watching Aunt Bee The Warden again last nite I got to thinking. What
would Aunt Bee need a laundry service for? Was that common back then? Nobody
ever does my laundry for me.
Just wondering. Now, get to it.

Something Else About Quiet Sam

2010-07-26 Thread PLV
I've been enjoying the speculations about how Barney got himself out to Sam's
farm. I had never thought about it, and appreciate those who have!

But here's something that has gnawed at my logical brain every time I have
watched this episode. After Andy has tried to phone Barney from the farmhouse
and has had Sam hang the phone up and drag him into his wife's bedroom - once
he determined it was a false alarm and he Sam returned to the living room,
why didn't Andy go right back to the phone ask Sarah to get Barney again?
Instead, he sat down and relaxed over a cup of coffee until Barney burst in.
Never made any sense to me, but like someone else said, I've always understood
that suspension of logic was often needed in order to fully enjoy the TAGS
experience!

Laundry and James Best

2010-07-26 Thread Harry Brewbaker
When I was little in the late 50's and early 60's several of the laundries in
my hometown of had home pickup and delivery service.  We didn't use it too
often but there was a lady nearby who did our irining since my mother worked
outside the home and didn't have time.

Marsha and Ken,  it must have been quite a thrill to spend the weekend with
James and Dorothy Best.  I'm sure it was a lot of fun.  I was wondering though,
did he show up in a fancy sports car with a set of threads?

Gustav Ken

2010-07-26 Thread hyperauntjan1

H Gustav? Does our Ken have gypsy blood in him? He does seem to know a
lot - maybe he has a big radio in his house! Does it rain a lot in Eau Claire?

Or - could he be related to old Hugo Hopflash who shined the backs of his shoes?

Oh no! Do you suppose he could be a foreign spy or maybe a being not of this
world?

Hey Dixon, that rare T-Bird car that you just bought on EBay, which way is the

It's rare that he does not get caught speeding in one of his cars.

BTW I just bought a rare, mint condition plastic model of the '61
