Did you ever meet Andy?
I am curious to know how many of you that frequent the digest ever actually met the man we all consider to be a good friend? I have many good friends that I have never met and Andy was one of them! I always wanted to meet him. Not just to get his autograph or his photo wih me...even though tht would have been niceI just would have enjoyed talking with him for a few minutes about his life and his works and to share a little of my life with him. Also curious just how many of us have named one of our children after Andy or any of our other Mayberry friends? My son is an Andy! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Andy's Passing
I would like to share my feeling of loss with all our other Mayberry family members. Andy certainly was a role model for so many people and the values and insights that he passed on to all of us through his portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor will stay with us forever. Growing up without a father around I especially needed someone to help guide me through my growing up years. But as became an adult and continued watching TAGS Andy continued teaching me the importance of true friendships and that fact that all people have value and deserve to be treated with respect no matter who they may be or what their circumstances. Our local newspaper and TV station both contacted me asking me to share some thoughts with them about Andy's passing which I thought was a very nice thing for them to do. Rest in Peace Andy, for you are back home among all those who had gone before you. Enjoy your great reunion. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Barney's gun
Someone with more knowledge of guns may educate me on this matter, but I'm pretty sure Barney's pistol was a Smith Wesson .38. It's likely he carried the same prop gun in every episode, but I can't confirm this. In Cyrano Andy, he promises to tell Thelma Lou how to care for a .38 caliber revolver, which implies he carries such a gun himself. A few years ago someone listed a prop gun on eBay (real guns are banned on eBay), purported to be the actual gun Don Knotts used on the set. If memory serves someone shelled out several thousand bucks for it. I have serious doubts that it was genuine, but the seller seemed mighty proud of that piece of paper which proved it was the real thing. Buyer beware: a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) is absolutely worthless. Anyone who would sell a fake autograph, prop, etc. would not hesitate to print up a fake certificate to go with it. RE: RIP Andy
I am sadAndy was such a good manand I know Heaven is rejoicing now that he is there. There was a quote in an article today where his wife Cindy said Andy was a person of incredibly strong Christian faith and was prepared for the day he would be call Home to his Lord. He is the love of my life, my constant companion, my partner and my best friend. I cannot imagine life without Andy. Let's keep Andy's family in our prayers. Regards, Sue Doughty High Point, NC I firmly believe that in every situation, no matter how difficult, God extends grace greater than the hardship, and strength and peace of mind that can lead us to a place higher than where we were before. -Andy Griffith ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Andy was at Mayberry Days
We were lucky enough to see Andy speak at Mayberry Days in 2004. That is when TV Land had his statue dedicated. Anybody else there in '04? I was thrilled to see Betty Lynn, Maggie (Charlene) and the Dilliards that day, along with Andy. I think Andy went just that one time, that I know of. That was also the only time I have been there. I would love to go back. Bee in New Concord, OH NetZero now offers 4G mobile broadband. Nice Tribute
I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning on ESPN Radio and had no idea those two were such big fans of Andy Griffith. For their first tribute they whistled the theme to the show and then later they played the version from the early 60's where Andy sang the lyrics to The Fishin Hole. Mike Greenberg then made a comment I found very touching. He said, Andy Griffith was an artist. It is the goal of most artists to leave a legacy that outlives them. 99.9% of artist fail to do that. Andy Griffith has left a legacy that will go on long after his passing. Amen, Mike. They went on to talk about TAGS never being off the air and Greenberg said something I could definately relate to, even though I was raised in the south and he was raised in New York City. If you were a kid home sick from school, you watched The Andy Griffith Show during the day. These guys know more than sports. While it is a sad time, there is much to celebrate. A truly fine and caring man who gave so much pleasure and entertainment to so many people. I was talking to a friend yesterday about Andy. He gave Andy a great compliment. I'd put Andy Griffith up there with John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart, if they were in it, I would watch it. This may sound strange, but even though I never met Mr. Griffith, I'm proud to say I knew him. Andy's final resting place
Andy was buried almost immediately after his death. I'm sure this is what he wanted simply because it is so unusual. Andy
I think we all feel like we have lost a member of our family. I have loved Andy and the show since I was a child. I will always treasure the times I got to see him in person at the statue dedication and at the Andy Griffith Parkway dedication. I hope he knew how much happiness and joy he brought to our lives for so many years and for years to come. He was a legend, one of a kind. Rest in peace Andy. I have had the theme song as my cell phone ring for years and years, now when I hear it I feel so sad...but I expect I will get over that. In memory, I think everyone should take a moment to whistle the Andy Griffith theme song. Debbie in SC ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 13, Issue 192
Barney's Gun The revolver that Don Knotts used on TAGS was a late 1930's COLT Police Positive in .38 Special caliber. It was a real gun that could fire live ammo, but only blanks were used on TAGS. It was sold at auction about 20 years ago for $9000.oo ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

I've been watching TAGS and Matlock today (July 4th) and thinking about how much we will miss Andy Griffith, but how comforting it is that everyone can mourn together on this day that is marked by family gatherings, parades, and picnics. Re: Andy laid to rest
Andy was laid to rest on his farm on Roanoke Island, NC yesterday, but 5 hours after he had passed. This was per his instructions. The funeral home there confirmed it. There was a small service, for family and close friends at about 11:30 am EDT. May all those mourning his passing be comforted for as his wife Cindy so beautifully eulogized, he is 'with his Lord'. interviews about Andy locally
Tuesday also was a whirlwind for me. My phone rang off the hook with people asking for interviews or telling me about Andy's passing. I and another member of our Knoxville, Tennessee, Mayberry chapter were interviewed on a live local television show at 4:00. You can see our interview at http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=225452. We were then interviewed for the 11:00 local news on another station. Earlier in the afternoon the local newspaper called requesting a statement which they put in today's edition of the Knoxville News-Sentinel. In fact, the newspaper included a picture of one of our members with the article. You can see it online at http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2012/jul/04/so-long-andy-local-fans-recall-griffith-as-hero/. Our chapter celebrated today by participating in the July 4 parade in Farragut, Tennessee. We had 3 squad cars and a truck with Rafe Hollister's still with about 20 people. People stood and clapped as we went by. Many expressed sadness hearing about Andy's passing away yesterday. It was a great way to commemorate Andy and our beloved show. We miss you, Andy. Danny's question
To answer Danny's question, I was able to meet Andy when he was at Disney's studio theme park to be inducted into the TV Hall of Fame. He was gracious but not friendly; his manager kept shooing folks away. I had heard he was not open to visiting and such so I did not press; I merely shook his hand and thanked him for all the fine entertainment he had given us and that was it. As I understand it, he never gave autographs. However, I had two lovely visits with Don Knotts and one with Goober, complete with autographs at the same location.
