Re: "Andy & Don"
Jim, To begin with, I haven't had the chance to read the book yet but am very anxious to and will making the time. With that said, while I may be in the minority, I'd prefer to know about my favorite actors, warts and all. We've got to be very careful and not make them out to be what they aren't and putting them on a pedestal - I seriously doubt either Andy or Don would want that. They were people and they'd be the first to admit they had their flaws - just like the rest of us. We saw the imperfections in the characters they portrayed and that make them feel more like us and that's why we love them and identify with them so much. Why can we not so the same for the actors that portray them? I'm not suggesting to indulge in any voyeuristic tendencies, but knowing that Andy Griffith and Don Knotts had their weakness and flaws just like the rest of us brings them. And we know Aunt Bee and Clara wasn't above a LITTLE gossip now and then - and even Andy indulged, too. The book ANDY AND DON
I loved the book. I liked it because everything was not whitewashed. Andy and Don were real people..the characters they played on TAGS were just characters. This is the most informative book I have read yet on them. It’s long been known of Andy’s drinking and temper, so it wasn’t that suprising. Alumni Sighting
Dan, I was watching the same Perry Mason show on MeTV this morning as you did, and I was amazed by all the TAGS alumni. But there was one you missed. In the very first scene of the show, there are 2 old women who come up to the house in a taxi. Then one of the women pays off the taxi driver and says "There you go son, keep the change". That woman was Isabel Randolph, who played 2 different roles on TAGS.First she was Mrs. Bixby in "A Plaque For Mayberry" and then she was Mrs Jeffries in "Rafe Hollister Sings". Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man. Here is an interesting tidbit on Isabel Randolph. On her IMDB website biography page, they have posted a picture of Mary Tyler Moore and some young woman. The caption says "Mary Tyler Moore and Isabel Randolph".I do not know the identity of the young woman, but it definitely was not Isabel Randolph.Isabel Randolph was in her mid 70's when The Dick Van Dyke Show was on TV. They were coming at me fast and furious on Perry Mason this morning: Undertaker/TV Repairman Orville Monroe; Nurse Mary Simpson; Gentleman Dan Caldwell; Cabin-owner Charley O'Malley; and Back-from-Nashville Tom Silby. "Andy & Don"
I just finished reading "Andy & Don". I found the book to be interesting, but at the same time somewhat disturbing. The author wrote of Andy and Don's struggles and successes. He also wrote about affairs, bouts with drinking, depression and fits of anger. In reading this book, I'm sure neither Andy or Don would have wanted some of that information known to the general public. I have a problem with authors such as this one who write of such things when the subjects are no longer around to defend themselves. It seemed evident that the author was not gearing his book to TAGS fans as evidenced by the subject matter and some of the terminology he used. In my opinion, this author was opportunistic and did not have the best interests of Andy, Don, their families and their fans at heart. I would be interested in hearing others' opinions about this book. Oh no!
Following up on all the alumni on a single Perry Mason, Nurse Mary Simpson ended up being the victim and Tom Silby did it! Now if we can just get Barney to tell us about Myra Koonze. Dan Sent from my iPad ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
