Late posts
Well, that was weird! I just finished reading today's digest, and all three posts were from late August! One of them was mine. I knew I had never seen it appear in a digest but just thought that, for some reason, it wasn't going to appear. Was it some odd glitch? Maybe Allan needs bigger wires! A Wonderful Experience
I would like to share with you folks a very interesting and heartwarming experience I had about a week ago. My wife and I were on our way to a car show and we stopped at a stop light. A car pulled up next to us and the person in the car asked if we were going to the show. They were heading there too and the woman said she wanted to speak with me. So we met up at the show. She worked at a group home which houses developmental disabled adults and others with serious health issues. She was wondering if I could bring the squad car to a picnic they were having so I could show it to a blind man who lived with them. He had sight at one time and he really loved old cars. I agreed to bring the car and I told her I would get some of my friends to bring cars too. So this week seven of us took our cars to their picnic. The blind man was a big TAGS fan and when he had his sight he watched it all the time. When he was brought over to my car I started describing it in great detail. I was told that he was very good at visualizing the cars that were described. I told him every detail about the car and he had the biggest smile on his face the entire time. I told him about the interior and I would ask him if remembered certain things about the squad cars on Mayberry. I put the light on and described what it looked like and I activated the siren. That man just beamed the entire time. He asked a lot of questions, and I am convinced that he was able to recreate that vivid image of the Mayberry squad car that he saw so many times all those years ago. Isn't it wonderful that TAG can still bring so much enjoyment to even someone who is totally blind. I am sure he really enjoys listening to TAGS without having to "see" it. I know, on occasion, I will put a DVD in and just listen to an episode and it is so relaxing. I can visualize everything that is happening. I have had 12 various eye surgeries so i have lost all my peripheral vision. I also suffer from macular degeneration and double vision. The doctors say there is a good chance that I will lose all my vision some day. I do find great comfort knowing that if this should happen I will still be able to enjoy TAGS. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
The Mayberry Chef
Dear TAGS, TVland showed the episode, The Mayberry Chef. I love this episode, but... It would of been much better for the tv station to have Aunt Bee come to the tv station early on a Saturday morning and tape 5 shows. She would of been home watching them withAndy and Opie during the week. When Aunt Bee was pouring Andy's coffee and shetold him that she wanted the lady let go becauseshe knew of a new cook, she had figured out thatAndy and Opie didn't have anybody cooking for them. Had a young intern girl as a on camera young newlywed who was learning to cook. The girl wouldof been her behind the scenes helper. When AuntBee couldn't find the big wooden spoon, she couldof said, Oh, I will find it Aunt Bee. Then when she went over to her basket, the stage manager wouldof handed it to her and smiled! lol Aunt Bee was a natural on The Mayberry Chef. Shecould of had a book of recipes that she could of sold. They could of done this with a real recipe book. The way Andy cooked the food was ridiculous. I was almost expecting Peggy to walk in and start getting the cloth napkins and candlesticks out because shewas there to help 2 poor helpless bachelors! Then oops! Helen calls and is coming over! He hasto get Peggy out of there now. lol That would of made a great episode. He could of gotten food from the diner! All he had todo was go by the diner, talk to the man that runs theplace and tell him in confidence what was going on andhe could of had 2 plates delivered to the courthouse ormet the delivery boy nearby. The reason why is becauseClara would see them and tell Aunt Bee. I wonder if Clara told Bee that she never saw Misses Parkins? I'm just daydreaming! lol But, I did love the way Andy and Opie went to the kitchendoor and Aunt Bee was in the refrigerator and she had thecarrots and was walking toward them and said, Hello, Sheriff Taylor, Opie, I'm the new cook! Awe! Mizzes Why-Lee of Sand Mt. 180movie.com Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Andy and Don book
Well, I finally decided to get the "Andy and Don" book. I debated for a long time due to things I'd heard about it, but after reading many fans' positive comments, I bought it and finished reading it tonight. One thing I have to say is that it is an engrossing read. Once I started, it was hard to put it down, and I spent most of today reading it. The author obviously did a thorough job in researching the book, as there were things in it that I had never known before, some that were fascinating to learn, others that were disturbing to discover. As an old movie and classic TV buff, I have a number of biographies and autobiographies of big stars, so I'm accustomed to finding out that actors and actresses can be very different from their on-screen personas. Still, there was some information in the "Andy and Don" book that I could have done without. I guess we fans, though we ought to know better, link the men so closely with the roles they played on TAGS that finding out they were very different people in real life can be a bit disillusioning. Still, I'm a big girl. I can handle it. It was interesting to find out that the inception of Mayberry Days was somewhat of a fluke, and it's amazing to think how that fluke has impacted Surry County, and Mt. Airy specifically, over the years. The author described attending the Mayberry Days after Andy's death and commented on some of the participants. I was quite disappointed by his brief description of David Browning (though unnamed) as "a Don Knotts surrogate, with a few extra pounds on his frame and no magic in his eyes." I found that unfair and rather insulting. First of all, David doesn't impersonate Don Knotts; he does his own version of Barney. Secondly, he's been doing the Mayberry Deputy for many years now and was slimmer when he first started (and he's no more than average weight now). Thirdly, if the author thought David had "no magic in his eyes," he must not have looked in them. Sorry to go on ab out that, but in Barney's lingo, that just frosted me! David is so talented with a great personality. He has added immeasurably to various Mayberry functions and celebrations through the years. (Okay, enough of the rabbit trail.) With nearly all autobiographies I read, my favorite part is the beginning and my least favorite is the end, with the decline of a career and eventually the death of the subject. That was still somewhat true with this book, but the one thing that was very uplifting about the end of the "Andy and Don" book is Andy's return to his boyhood Christian faith. After years of living a Hollywood lifestyle, his illnesses later in life seemed to bring him back to the realization that the most important thing is life is the state of the soul and preparation for eternity. He wanted desperately to believe that Don would be waiting for him in heaven and regretted that he wasn't able to explicitly discuss his salvation or lack thereof before Don's death. The author' s account verified that Andy's faith in the Lord was real, and I found this touching and comforting. I realize my report on the book is very late, as most of you have either read it or decided not to. I just wanted to share my thoughts.
