charlene singing

2007-10-07 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
although I am the last person to pass on gossip, I'm just gonna say it.
When Charlene is singing salty dog in the episode where she has a baby, she
repeats the chorus at the end of the song just a few too many times. In my
opinion it really starts to grate the nerves. I just watched the episode
last night and I felt I needed to just get that off my chest.

Aunt Bee Spelling

2006-10-13 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
It does seem odd that “Bee” would be the spelling for a nickname that is
short for “Bea”trice

Goober what?

2006-08-31 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
So I'm watching the episode from season 5 called TV or Not TV and noticed
that when Andy introduced Goober he introduced him as Goober Beasley. I
hadn't noticed him being called anything but Goober Pyle since the first
episode he was in where he was introduced as Goober Beasley. But I thought
that was odd if Beasley wasn't right to make that mistake as far along as
the 5th season. Not that I want to make a big moulage out of it or anything
I just thought it would have been interesting if Goober had been related to
Juanita. It would have been a funny tie in to have Goober give Barney a
hard time about dating his cousin.

Southern References on Andy

2006-08-14 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
There has been a lot of talk on all the things missing from TAGS that
wouldn't have been authentic Southern. If you think about the south in the
60's it was not our proudest era. The show never touched on race relations
either. I think they wanted the show to appeal to everyone. It was located
in North Carolina but they weren't trying to beat that part of the show into
the ground. I think Andy Griffith had a much more balanced view of the
south in the relation to our northern friends that is missing today.
Southerners today seemed to try to hard to make sure everyone knows there
from the south and we do things differently. Texas unfortunately seems to
be the worst about this and that is my home state. Even in Texas the
traditions between west Texans and east Texans are different and phrases are
different. I live in Fredericksburg and things here are way different than
the next town to the north which is Llano. There are several Llanoisms that
are not said here in Fredericksburg. I imagine all over the south that is
the case. There may have even been places in the south where sweet tea was
call called iced tea and coke was called pop.

RE-What ephisode is that

2006-08-06 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
Well, I explained (without skipping a beat), Son, that's just the actor
in the man. What episode is that line from

That episode is called Up in Barney's room where Barney got kicked out of
his room for cooking chili and crackers. In that scene Andy and opie are on
their way home from the movies and are about to catch Barney and Thelma Lou
getting frisky in the jail house.

Season 6

2006-07-17 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
I have been reluctant to purchase season 6 because of not having Barney. I
also really enjoy the black and white and feel like the color seasons lost
most of the charm I enjoyed in the first 5 years. For those of you who have
purchased season 6 or enjoy the color seasons could you please give me some
good reasons why I would not be disappointed if I went ahead and added
season 6 to my collection. I really would like an excuse to purchase it but
I don't want to taint my view of the characters if the episodes are not done
well. Season 5 in my opinion was already heading in the wrong direction
with shows about Andy wanting to leave Mayberry and episodes depicting Andy
showing a level of almost anger and exasperation with Barney that was not
characteristic of his mild laid back personality. (Eg.. The case of the
punch in the nose) They had Andy's character getting pretty upset with
Barney not that it wasn't warranted but it was just a little disheartening
for me. I prefer the episodes where Andy and Barney are good pals and
working together. (Eg.. Barney Gets his Man) one of my favorites because
Andy is kind to Barney through the whole episode even though he knows Barney
is full of it.

Mayberry Retirement Community

2006-07-15 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
It got me wondering why some developer hasn't come up with a plan for a

place called Mayberry Retirement Community.

That would be a great idea, the only problem is whenever someone does build
it the only people that could afford to live there would be the Ben Weavers
of the world. Unless you kept the prices down by restricting who could live
there not by price but by some kind of application. The application could
include an extensive Andy Griffith show trivia section. That way only true
enthusiast could move in. Otherwise you might get a bunch of people just
wanting to live in a quaint retirement community without understanding the
real spirit of the idea.

Green River and Andy Bloopers

2006-04-13 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
I was in Pinedale, Wyoming this week for my wife's brother's wedding we
flew into Salt Lake and then drove from there to Pinedale. I stopped
off at an exit to get gas and not realizing it, found myself in the town
of Green River, Wyoming. Home of the Green river ordinance. I brought
my TAGS episodes to watch on my laptop on the trip and I noticed that on
Season 1 disc 4 one of the episodes I can't remember now which one. But
one of them on that disc had a shot of Andy closing the door to the
Sheriff's office. Well he didn't get the door closed all the way the
first time and so he went to finish closing it. However before he did
you can see a hand reach from the other side of the door and close it
for him. Like one of the stage crew thought he would help out and it
got caught on tape. My wife says I definitely watch the show too much
if I am now noticing these things. I was curious though if anyone else
has noticed little goofs like that in any episodes that they would like
to share.

RE: End of Season 5

2006-03-12 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
I'm not sure why, but those last two shows of season
five seem to have
a different feel to them--more like the color episodes
than the BW's.
It's not just that Barney doesn't appear. I can't
quite put my finger
on it, but when I viewed them, I felt like I was
already into season
six. Anyone else have that reaction?

I too had that reaction. To be honest I felt like
season 5 and even some of season 4 had a different
feel. I felt like the writers fell back too much on
Barney's bungling as a plot line and Andy seemed to
just be upset all the time. They didn't have that
light hearted happy feel. Not that there weren't
plenty of excellent ephisodes in the bunch. But I
just didn't like how often Andy was yelling at Barney.
In the first 3 seasons he never yelled at Barney or
if he did it wasn't that often.
By the way now that I have finished all 5 seasons I
wrote a program in MS Excel that randomly chooses a
disc for me to watch among all 5 seasons and then
keeps track of which ones I have watched so I don't
repeat any until I have watched all 5 seasons again.

RE: Barney leaving and sad sad news.

2006-02-25 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
My fellow Joe Not to worry. There are no
references to Barney
leaving at the end of season 5. He is just absent
from the last two
episodes dealing with the carnival (one of them with
Jerry Van Dyke).
At the time, they didn't do that much (write
characters out), and I'm
not sure of the timing of Andy deciding to go ahead
and do the next
season. (Don Knotts make Movie/contract arrangements
thinking season 5
would be the last of the series before Andy changed
his mind).

Thanks for that, I can now enjoy watching season 5
without stress. Since finding out about the Death of
Don Knotts it was weighing on my mind all the more so.

I keep trying to think of something clever to say in
rememberance of Barney, but right now I'm just pretty
sick to my stomach over it. I'll think of something
later. :-{

Thanks,
Joe

Reply to What I love about TAGS

2006-02-24 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
I watch at least 1-3 ephisodes of TAGS every day and
find it makes dealing with people much easier. The
way the majority of people are they would never
tolerate having a friend like Barney. But Andy does
and forgives him no matter what. He also never talks
about Barney negatively or makes fun of him behind his
back, which is what alot of us would do if we had a
friend like that. Even if we remained friends we
couldn't help but vent every once in a while about how
delusional, childish. or self absorbed they were. I
just go season 5 and have started watching disc 1.
There is something I am concerned about though. I can
already tell that I am going to get very depressed
watching the last ephisodes knowing that they are
going to in some way involve Barney leaving. It is
stressing me out thinking about it. I have thought
about watching season 5 in reverse getting the last
ephisodes first so that I could end on a good funny
note instead of a depressing one. Any thoughts on
this.

Another Nick name

2006-02-21 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
When Barney had decided that he was the one related to
Nathaniel Clemens (Revolutionary war hero) in the
ephisode A Plaque for Mayberry he started referring
to Nathaniel Clemens as Nate. He told Andy it was
because they were now related. Also In the Ephisode
The Clubmen As soon as Barney thought he was going
to be a member of the Club he called Andy's friend
Roger whom he had never even met Rog.

Floyd I know Roger oh he's class
Barney Yeah old Rog is one of us.

Since this was brought up it's been pretty funny to
notice all of the times Barney shortens a name to
denote his close relationship, whether real or
imagined.
