Very sad news about Gavin Macleod. Fantastic in all of his acting roles. Have a look at The Very Old Antique from Season 1 of Petticoat Junction. "Jubal" is brilliant (once again) in the role as Mr. Waterhouse, the railway executive interested in buying the Cannonball. As is Charles Lane. (Mr. Frisbee on Andy and Homer Bedloe on PC) But, yes, very sad ending for Mr. Sloane. We remember him every time we hear the opening of TAGS as we do the great Earle Hagen. Be safe and well. Howard Morris
Yes, "Ernest T" could look and sound "normal" as has been recorded by those on the Digest. He also did so many voices on The Flintstones. In the commentary of the "Anne Margrock" episode the commentator states that that particular voice was "Howie sounding like himself." He also mentions Mayberry. A great talent in so many ways. Hal Smith of course was many voices on The Flintstones. Rance Howard was the writer of two Flintstones episodes: Goggles Paesano as well as the Slimey Rock Gang. Other Mayberry writers also wrote for The Flintstones. Mayberry and Bedrock episodes get better and better with the passing years. Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends and relatives. Don Knotts
Eleven years on February 24 that our beloved Barney passed on. Saw the clip from 1963 with Andy, Danny Thomas, Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Phil Silvers and Don as "the sponsor." Doesn't get any better. Opie's Fortune
On August 31, younger brother turned 57. So nice to be with Mom, Grandma, siblings, grandkids, nephews and nieces celebrating with dinner, cake and gifts. Great to all be together. We celebrated at his place in north central Ontario. ( about an hour south of Algonquin Park ) After, we all watched Opie's Fortune. It was great to see ages 14 to 80 enjoying and seeing the humour and care as Barney read the newspaper to Andy regarding Earl Pike's birthday gift of a brand new car to his boy. "How old is his boy?" "He's 57, isn't he?" Andy's nod toward's Barneyjust so fantastic. Just shows how our favourite show lives on and transcends the ages. Take care. Bobby Diamond
Bobby was also on Leave It To Beaver. He was one of Wally's classmates who was giving a substitute teacher a run for her money. But in a cowardly fashion as teachers ( myself included) have seen many times. But, he was the best as Evan with the eggs. Dress
I loved reading about the dress. I heartily agree about the shabbiness in public today. I have been a high school music teacher for 34 years. Every school day I am very happy to say that I have worn a tie. The first week it is a suit and then coordinates. Winter time, a sweater accompany my shirt, tie and dress pants. Spring, the coordinates. When our band gives concerts or goes to dinner and concerts, the students dress to the nines. Including real TIE up bow ties. ( not clip ons or ready tied like Barney, sorry Barn). My male students learned much faster than me how to tie one! The young ladies are dressed up in a classy manner but with modesty. And these teenagers love to dress up! On a recent band trip to Cleveland, one student brought four suits. One for each day! But the best part is when total strangers compliment me on their dress. I thank them and then ask if they could kindly tell the students themselves. A great feeling to see the band members graciously accept their compliments. But, I don 't dress like Malcolm Merriweather or Ward Cleaver at home. Neither do my students. It is so nice to see this dress on TAGS and to pass it on to the youngins'. Better to be overdressed than under. Just ask Barney as was noted when he dropped over at supper time. I haven't even figured out what I'm going to wear tonight. Didn't fool Malcolm! Watched an episode last night with Fred Goss in it. Ashes all over but wearing a suit. It pays to look your best! My observations. Thanks for reading. Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 14, Issue 30
Saw the colourful red hair of Betty Lynn the other night. She was Miss Lee, Uncle Bill's secretary on Family Affair. First season. She was taking dictation at Davis and Gaynor. Another note. Being a high school music teacher, my grade nine band recently played The Little Brown Church in the Vale. Cued it up and we watched Andy, Barney and Mr. Tucker sing it. So gratifying to see the look of seeing and hearing a piece of beauty on the faces of those 14 year olds. Nick, freezing in Ontario Canada. William Lanteau
William Lanteau played that small but great role of Charlie the Mailman in On Golden Pond from 1981 -1982. (you broke the screen door, Charlie.) Who can forget that powerful message about life? Bravo to Jane for buying the rights to the play with her Dad in mind. Henry Fonda's last movie and he takes home the Oscar. Nice way to finish. Best to all from Nick in Ontario Canada. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Rance and The Flintstones
In addition to the judo episode, Rance Howard also wrote the Goggles Paesano episode with Fred driving like someone coming home on the freeway. Two great episodes. Prayers and sympathy to the family and for the soul of the 12 year old boy. What a terrible tragedy. Being a high school teacher, it hits home very hard. TAGS Voices in Flintstones Episodes
Howard Morris and Hal Smith voiced numerous characters on The Flintstones. Some of Howard's voices were the patriarch of the Hatrocks, Anne Margaret's agent, the sponsor for Anne's show at the Bedrock Bowl, the director in the Larry Lava episode and the banker when Fred and Wilma keep taking out and returning the $80. There are more. Hal Smith did the voice of the owner of the bus company where Fred drove (A.A. Carborundum) the clerk in the court house when Betty and Barney adopted Bam Bam, the host of Peek a Boo Camera, the host of The Prize is Price and one of Fred's golfing buddies. Again there are more. And yesAlan Melvin..the service station owner where Fred and Barney are stuck to the bowling ball, the crook where Betty is inadvertently passing the phoney bills for the counterfeiters, one of the Water Buffalo members (the Way Out episode) and one of the police officers in the same episode. Bernard Fox: Pebbles and Bam Bam's manager when they were singing stars. His character was Eppy Brianstone which was a parody of long time Beatles manager Brian Epstein. These guys were just so prolific and versatile. Nick, in Ontario, Canada. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Who can forget High Noon In Mayberry. Here Andy, (offering Andy his revolver) put it under your shirt. No thanks Barn, Fluffy and I have been friends for years. Andy And Musical Instruments
Just to expand a little on what Ken said so nicely about Andy and the musical instruments. Andy, if I am recalling correctly, was a music and religion major at a Moravian university (as we say in Canada; college as is said more commonly south of the 49th) He was a tuba and trombone major. In the Mayberry Band episode when he says Well I'll go to the garage and get my horn!, he is referring to a tuba. That's what he plays in that episode. It looks like a 3/4 size and not the full size. Being a music major and conductor of a high school band just north west of Toronto, I know that musicians often refer to their instrument as a horn. I do this all the time when referring to my saxophone. I played once with a cellist who called that lovely string instrument a horn! I am not alone I know, in loving how Andy incorporated music into the show and how good it was. I loved reading about the Dillards account of how they recorded the music for their episodes using the best studio conditions at Andy's insistence. Keep enjoying the show and the music. And what can be said of that great composer/ arranger/ trombone player Earl Hagen who was in charge of the music? We have all been blessed. Best to you and yours and Mayor, how about a half a chorus of Stars and Stripes Forever. Sheldon Leonard
That Sanka commercial has got to be one of the best that they did. Sheldon was an incredible person in show biz. Producer, director, biographer; I'm probably leaving something out. He was great in It's A Wonderful Life. Kind while George was born and mean when not born. Nice to see him in the commercial. Gonna be a hot one today Pa, hear them locus? Ed Sawyer
Hi, Ed Sawyer also played that great role of Charlie the Mailman in the 1982 classic movie On Golden Pond Henry Fonda, through his character, Norman Thayer Jr. always berated him: You broke the screen door, Charlie. (the door was broken for years) and Why didn't you marry Chelsea (Jane Fonda) Charlie? You wouldn't let me, Norman. A small but great role.
