Well I was up there to day entertaining at the Rock Springs Cafe. During the 60's I beleive that there were still a minority of women working in the work force and there were many many jobs that they would not allow women to perform. I clearly remember than when I finished my four year term in the Air Force in June 1968, I was approached a few times while I was just walking down the sidewalk and asked if I want or need a job. There was a shortage of men for a lot of jobs. I beleive that the womans rights move began in the 70's and eventually employers were forced to give jobs to women that they really didn't want to. Morals and ethics changed by the 90's a large number of people began hollaring that they want things to again be like they were in the days of The Andy Griffith Show. I know this as I am a portrayal to Don Knotts and I was hounded to change things back. Sharon asked for an explanation of the upper and lower grades. Each school year has two simesters and at the end of each semester there was a test and if you passed the test you would advance to the 2 nd semester. If you failed the first semester you would repeat it. Really it wasn't a bad thing because because if a student had a bad semester he wouldn't necessarly have to repeat the entire school year. Well lets see, how did I make money as a youngster? On my birthday when I was seven, I stood out on the side walk and told everyone who walked past that today is my birthday. Most people gave me a nickle for that. When I was about nine I agreed to saw up a big pile of wood that was to be burnt for eat, I was paid $5.00 up front and was to get another five when the job was done. I sawed the end off of one board and that was hard work so I spent the five dollars and stayed out of that guys sight. Let's see, I didn't tossle corn but I weeded ment and picked potatoes. School is out
Yep school is out for a couple of months. Tuesday evening my daughter and grandboys were here and was determined that he was going to stay at my home over night while his mother was determined that he wasn't going to. Well, Mike crawled under my kitchen table and back in the corner. We tried to coax him out and he refused. Than finally I realized that my tale just isn't very heavy so I just picked it up and moved it. Naturally he had that Barney Fife surprised look on his face and he knew that his luck had run out. Than yesterday I was reading the digest and all of those stories about bugs. You know what i'm going to do the next time he takes shelter under my table? The Mayberry Cafe in Danvile, Ind is relatively famous; i've been there myself a few times. It is a really nice restaurant and no doubt i'll stop in there everytime when I go to Indiana but I don't recall anyone ever mentioning any other Mayberry restaurants. Does anyone know that there is one in Tulsa, Oklahoma? Now, i'm from Indiana, been in Arizona for twenty-nine years, and I didn't know about the one In Danville untill someone Tombstone, Az told me about it. Than long about nine years ago on one of my cross country travels and at the time when I arrived at Tulsa, I was mighty hungry so I pulled off the road and into the parking lot of a restaurant. But I didn't eat at that resturant because just when I parked I happened to look up and right across the street was a big sign on a building that said Mayberry Cafe. So I naturally I drove across the street and ate at the Mayberry Cafe. The one in Tulsa though had more of a truck stop atmasphere. Strangely enough I was just thinking about that myself. In 1963 I was a cheff in a fast food restaurant and I earned a dollar an hour, that was about the average for a kid in high school. A cup of coffee was ten cents and you could buy a quarter pound hamberger, order of fries (or onion rings) and a coke for one dollar. I think eighty to one hundred dollars a week was probably about right for a full time employee. For a sheriff, I expect he would have earned a hundred and twenty five dollars a week.Because the owner of the fast food restaurant took home $125.00 a week. Ken, I beleive that the old salt and pepper was a wool suite. In the fifties they were not un common. I spent some time myself looking for such a suite some time back. I went to Goodwill stores and other seccond hand stores and didn''t have any luck. I didn't get too concerned though because here in Arizona it would be a real challenge to wear such a heavy wool suite. As I remember also, those old woolen cloths weree pretty ichy too. Maximum security cell Just yesterday (Sunday) here I was trapped in my own maximum security cell. Yep, I was and for more then three long hours! Can you emagine, can you emagine, that, me..Barney, locked in my own maximum security cell for more then three long hours? Here in the west coast's main Mayberry deputy's place wee had some excitement. There must had been more then twenty of those police guys from the big city ( including some special forces fellows) right here in my own front yard, and my back yard too. There was a crime, a real crime. It's big i'm tellin ya, it was really really big! A fellow who lives jus three doors down from me right here in my maximum security apartment complex (while miss Mendalbright was away) who who attempted to kid-nap a girl in Goodyear, Arizona and they chassed him all the way home. This part i really don't want to tell ya, but in the end he took his own life. True story, this really did happen. Shucks, what I don't understand though is why they didn't just call me and ask me to bring him in. Oh, that's right, The Mayberry Jail is closed on Sunday's. A while back someone wrote in the digest about his experience of a squral getting into his house through the chimney. Yesterday evening I was watching AFV and it showed a film strip of somebody who had a wild suural runnung loose all through his house and it stirred up quite a mess, knocking things off of shelves, pictures off the walls, etc. I have to wonder if that film strip was entered by the fellow who told us his story in the digest. Hi Folks, Well, it's been awhile sense I wrote into the digest and I recon I'm do to interact with all of you but i'm wondering. Last week-end was Helldorado Days in Tombstone, Arizona and I honestly debated on weather to go down to it this year or not, due to the economics. But late on Friday night I was informed about an article in The Arizona Republic about Helldorado days and that my picture was in the article and that it said that I would be there. I found a copy of that days newspaper and found the article, sure enough my picture was in it. It didn't actually say that I would be there but gave the impression that I would be there. My friends told me that i'd better get down there but I had a singing telegram to do on Saturday evening. it sort of haunted me so right after the telegram I headed down to Tombstone arriving at about ten p.m. On Sunday afternoon a gentleman approached me, shook hands with me and told me that he came all the way from Nashville, Tenn. just to meet me. But he didn't tell me who he was, so i'm wondering if he might be a member of the digest? I would appreciate knowing who he is. Perhaps, I should mention here that my two new books are now on the market, I expect that they will in the near future be in book stores, they can now be ordered through any book store. 35 Years in a NutShell is my forty plus years story of being a look-alike to our greatly loved Don Knotts and as well, is a biography. Where is the digest?
Hi everyone and especially Allen. For several weeks now I have not received the digest. H_E_L_P! Because I haven't gotten the digest I don't know if anything has been written in it about the Don Knotts Home Town Celebration but I did attend it and had a wonderful time. Of course David Browning performed and throughout the event Dave and I enjoyed some great conversation. I very much enjoyed Karen's performance; Tied Up In The Knotts. And I enjoyed Francie's presentation. There were other entertainers and performers, some of which I missed, but the above mentioned were my favorites. There was also plenty of entertainment for children and family's. Should they have the event again you might want to consider attending it. . But please don't steel the Don Knotts Blvd street signs. The county commishoner personally told me that they are for ever replacing those signs due to theft. Well folks, it's been a Rather long time sense I've posted, have been busy. But, I've got to take a moment and tell you that there is something HOT in Arizona. Actually, at this time of the year just about everything that you touch in Arizona is HOT. But I want to announce to you some- thing that is really HOT, really, really HOT! Some of you may have forgotten who I am, others of you probably never heard of me. Well, I'm that little guy who lives in Arizona and GOOD MANY PEOPLE REFER TO ME AS THAT BARNEY GUY, others have refered to me as West Coast Barney', but most folks just call me Barney I guess it has something to me being a look a-like. Hi everyone, It's been quite awhile sense I have posted but I have thoughts on my mind about our so beloved deputy sherriff Barney Fife. My thought for today is: For many, many years Don Knotts brought many laughs out of the hearts and minds of hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of thousands of people. I wonder, how many people can honestly say that they brought a good hardy laugh out of Don Knotts? I ask this because .. well, I did. Not ever, will I forget that. Today is February the eighteenth. Wednesday the twenty-fourth is the anniversery of his passing. Let's all give him a moment of silence that day. The greatest show on earth is NOT, the circus, it is THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. Let's keep it alive In Don's honor. Statue
Am catching up this morning with reading the digest (about fifteen or so issues) and a heart fellt thought came to me about the statue and the Knotts family. Truley I believe that we should be conscerned about the feelings of Don's family. Let me say that it hurts to lose a loved one and when you do, you go through a period of mourning. Beyond the fame and popularity that we the fans hold to Don Knotts, for his wonderful roles on T.V. and the big screen, Don was a real person, with a real life, and a real family. Perhaps, that can be better understood if I tell you how it was for me when I lost my youngest brother about two years ago; Ronnie was born four months after my father passed away. The year was 1954. When mom brought him home from the hospital and laid him on a bed, I instantly picked him up and held him. I looked at him and i said, you arae so little and you don't even have a Dad. I said to him, I can't really be your day, but i will be as much like a day for you as I can be. I was ten years old and i certainly lived up to my word. Ronnie acquired hepititus C from a transfusion in the Gulf war(Desert Storm) and it eventually took his life. I loved that little brother so much. When i was notified of the seriousness of his illness I went home and spent time with him during the last weeks of his life. Three weeks after my visit, he passed away. I didn't go back home to attend his funeral, I couldn't bare to see him in that state. I dreaded the thought of having to see pictures of him in that state. He didn't know that I felt that way but he had a final request. He didn't want any pictures taken of his funeral, he wanted to be remembered as he was. Ronnie lives on in my heart. However, I know that he is gone and i was in mourning for well over a year. Perhaps, this will help his fans to be understand to Don's family and to be sensitive to their emotions. Mayberry moment
One of the subjects that has been discussed in the digest is small towns like Mayberry. This past weekend I stopped in at a restaurant in Benson, Arizona. Instantly everyone in there purked up when i walked in, but one waitress in particular came to me and said, A little while ago someone asked me why would i want to live in Benson. I told them because I've always wanted to live in Mayberry and Benson is a nice, small, friendly town like Mayberry. Than,she said to me, I looked up and there you was walking in. Benson is twenty two miles from Tombstone and i was on my way to Tombstone for Wyiat Earp days and I was wearing my Barney Fife uniform. I read in the e bullet today about the memorial that they had for Don Knotts. I wish that i had known about it before, because i would love to had gone to it. I feel like i missed out on something that was very worthwhile. My love goes out to all of Don;'s familu, friends, and fans.
