Mayberry Meet up

Thank you Maryann for the kind words. And yes,lots of folks put in a lot
of work to pull off the meet up. Am so looking forward to next year at
the meet up. The "dress up" competition was so much fun.

I am in the process of making items for the silent auction at MD2019.
Come by after the parade and peruse the items that lots of talented
people have donated. The revenue is funneled back to the SAC to help
promote the Mayberry event(s) throughout the year.

Thank you to Allan and Jan Newsome and all the others whose names I wish I knew 
to include here, for a wonderful time at the Mayberry Meetup in Mt. Airy a few 
weeks ago. From arranging meals for us to the Sunday Worship service (which 
cleverly correlated scripture with a TAGS episode focused on Otis), I know more 
hours went into preparing for this event than I can imagine.
Thank you to the tribute artists. It was easy to tell which characters they 
were and it was so much fun to see them. Very impressive.
Thank you to Dewey Lamb for all the  creative door prizes he made. He always 
puts a lot of thought, time, (and I suspect, money), into making TAGS treasures.
And thank you to all of you who I got to speak with, hang out with, and get to 
know a bit.  Mayberry fans are the best.

It is with much sadness I pass along the demise of a long time member of this 
board.His name
is Chuck Talley from Lima,Ohio.Year after year Chuck would come by the silent 
auction during
Mayberry Days.Each time he would bid and win several of my donated items.Heck 
of a nice
guy.Here on the digest he went by the tag name "The Gollywobbler".Please keep 
his family and
friends in your thoughts and prayers.

I have met many folks at the auction.Some will say "I bought so & so from you

many years ago".It puts a smile in my heart that they are still happy with their

auction purchase.The prices paid this year were the highest I have seen in my

fifteen years of the event.Thanks to all who purchased mine & other peoples

items.The monies help the Surry Arts Council to continue having Mayberry Days.

Prayers needed

One of our Mayberry tribute artists has a very serious medical condition.I 
spoke with

him today.I am talking about Keith Brown(Colonel Harvey).He stated he was 
requesting

prayers.He nor Bob Munday(Briscoe Darling) were able to attend Mayberry Night in

Troy this past Saturday.Bob is recovering from a medical issue.Let's all keep a 
good

thought for them.


Dixie Griffith,Maggie Petersen,and the tribute artists did a great job at 
Mayberry Night

in Troy.Jeff Branch(Howard Sprague) is a terrific Mayberry themed promoter.A 
good

time was had by all.Also,the VW Boys provided great music,comedy,and magic.

Quilt raffle

In response to a query about a quilt raffle for the silent auction.Four to five 
years ago,a lady named

Pat Coleman made and donated a Mayberry quilt.It was auctioned off as a live 
auction as opposed

to a silent auction.


If I remember correctly,It went for $6,500.00.I would think a quality made 
Mayberry quilt would fit

right in with the silent auction.Don't know if selling tickets would go 
over.Might be worth thinking

about.

Football

Yesterday I watched the Alabama/Auburn football game.It dawned on me that 
Auburns' school colors

were the same as Mayberry Union High..blue and orange.The announcer mentioned a 
player on

the Auburn team by the name of Jerry Judy.The announcer immediately blurted out 
Judy-Judy-Judy.


As a side note,the Mt. Airy Bears are an undefeated team headed into the fourth 
round of the state

playoffs.GO BEARS.

First timers @ MD2017

You will be in awe with your 1st trip to Mayberry Days.Practically every shop 
on main street

sells Mayberry memorabilia.Many of you will attend the parade,trivia 
contest,granite quarry,

ticket venues,etc.However,there is one place rarely mentioned...The Mt. Airy 
Museum of

Regional History.No,there are no Mayberry baubles for sale here,but,there are 
plenty of things

to pique your interest.This will be my 14th consecutive Mayberry Days,and I 
always schedule

a visit to this fine attraction.I do not think you will be disappointed.And

yes,there are plenty of things there that will facinate your wee ones.

Caroling

Norma,

Christmas caroling is still alive and well.About a hundred folks from my church 
went

caroling Thursday before Christmas.Several were riding a wagon pulled by a truck

that went through a large neighborhood near our church.Folks would exit their 
house

to listen to us and wave and say thank you.The kids really enjoyed it.Back at 
church

everyone enjoyed hot dogs,hot chocolate,s'mores.


A church bus & van were also used.One went to visit our shut ins and the other 
went

to a rest home.These folks really enjoyed the caroling.Fun was had by all.

The Howard brothers

I recently saw Ron Howard in an episode of Daniel Boone.He portrayed a mean 
spirited teenager

who was rude and callous and lacking in manners.Just another side of the actor.


An episode of Bonanza immediately followed with Clint Howard.He was about the 
same age as on TAGS.

He surely was snaggle toothed in this episode.

MD2016

 I think all in attendance at MD2016 had a great time.The weather was warm but
no rain.I chatted with old friends and made some new ones.The silent auction was
a success again because of the efforts of Jeff Koontz and all the generous 
folks who
donated unique items.The celebrities/tribute artists were spot on in their 
appearances.
Mike Haviland is a new tribute artist as Sgt. Carter and Michael Oliver was 
great as
Gomer.
 
The Colonel Tim's Talent Time Show had a few new twists that went over well with
the crowd.David Browning & Christie McLendon did a duet dressed as Porter 
Wagoner
and Dolly Parton...fun,fun,fun.

Mayberry's Alive & Well

 It is the belief that small towns like our beloved Mayberry actually exist 
today.Mayberry was
and is a much simpler time & place.Folks actually cared for each other and lent 
a helping hand
when needed...and they did not hold out THEIR hand wanting to be paid for 
it.People in Mayberry
carried on a family oriented conversation at the dinner table.People today have 
a fork in one hand
and some type electronic gadget in the other.Yes,Mayberry had a disturbance 
occasionally,but your
kids could play outside without a parent's fear that their child would be 
harmed in any way.Kids then
had manners and respect for their parents...'cause they knew they would get 
their behinds tanned.
Today, for the most part,as long as the children don't bug them,the parents are 
happy campers.
 
And yes,Barney was a little scared in certain situations & Gomer may not have 
been the sharpest
knife in the drawer.But then again,I think we all exhibit some of these traits 
at times.
 
The episodes may only last thirty minutes,but they can transport me to a place 
of nirvana for a much
longer period of time.Thinking of certain episodes can get me through a rough 
patch in my life at times.
They sometimes fill a void that picks me up when reality knocks me down.
 
In closing,we all know that TAGS is fictional,but for a brief period of time,we 
can relish in the simplicity
of the show.We can be kids like Opie & his pals and we can be young lovers 
again much like Josh & Hannah.
Or,we can be a wise sage like Andy.Either way,it is a win win for 
us.Well,'gotta go.This has got me wanting
to pull up an episode on Netflix.

the car shows,parades,assisted living homes
all enjoy you sharing your love & knowledge of Mayberry.I'm sure the little 
tykes enjoy your giving them a stick-on
deputy badge.And,lest we forget,you get to pose with beauty queens quite often.
 
By your being so active,you are probably young at heart & physically.Least ways 
you don't have to worry about
those doorbells driving you crazy.
 
Continue at the pace you & Linda are going and you may need to consider hiring 
a booking agent.And should you ever

Good times in Indiana

 My trip to Indiana for Mayberry in the Midwest was awesome.Maggie & the
tribute artists were spot on.Danville went all out to be receptive to newbies.
Got to hang with old friends & make new ones.The celebrity/tribute artists 
basketball game was really good.
 
As a side note,Michelle Bryson was one heck of a "fun girl".Her attire was a
perfect match.

I will be attending Mayberry in the Midwest for the first time.Flying out early 
Friday morning.

Color Episodes

 I have never been a devotee of the color episodes.That being said,I watched the
Christmas episode & the Pickle episode tonight,both of which were televised in
color.I noticed obscure items in the color episodes that I never noticed in B & 
W.

Smut

 Tuesday,while waiting in line at the grocery store I glimpsed at one of the 
smut
magazines most stores have near the cashier.This particular one is entitled 
"Globe".
The cover had pictures of the main TAGS folks with disturbing quotes about each
one.Needless to say,I did open this magazine as there was no hand sanitizer 
nearby.

Troy.Maggie,Rodney,and all

Snappy Lunch

 Got my issue of Our State magazine today.The front page is dedicated
to the Snappy Lunch porkchop sandwich including a picture of the now
famous sammich.There is a very good story complete with pictures
inside the magazine.According to the story,the eatery got its name when
it opened in 1923 because customers used to say,I want a sandwich,and
make it snappy!
 
Also found out the building was at one time a shoe shop and a post office.

MD2014

I got home from MD2014 Sunday afternoon.I do believe a good time was had by 
everyonein attendance.After the trivia contest all the digest and chapter 
members gathered.Each person is asked to give their name and the name they go 
by on the digest.
Each year I speak with Harriet the chicken thief and Welford the camera 
nut.I wasfortunate to meet and talk with two new to me digest members...Janet 
Thelma Lou andChuck the gollywobbler.Both were very personable.
All the celebrities and tribute artists were spot on in their performances at 
Colonel Tim's Talent Time.
A lot of talented folks donated quality items to the successful silent 
auction.Jeff Koontzdeserves a lot of credit for leading this annual endeavor.He 
does a lot of behind the scenework that few know of.
In closing,I was saddened to leave but am eagerly awaiting MD2015.

Mayberry Bonanza

A couple of nights ago,a Bonanza episode was shown and it was laced with
Mayberry inferences.Hubcaps Lesch played the part as Lorna Doone Mayberry,
yes...her last name was Mayberry.There was a feud between the McFaddens
and the Hatfields.In the end,the two clan heads became friends.Lorna Doone
Mayberry took up with the town drunk.
 
Speaking of town drunks,Otis Campbells' wife Rita played the part of a no
nonsense country woman.This episode was so Mayberry infused you could
see the plot unfold almost immediately.

Mayberry Night inTroy

Last Saturday was a hoot in Troy,NC.Jeff  Tammy Branch organized quite
the fun filled occasion.All the tribute artists plus Maggie  Rodney really
had everyone in stitches.There were new skits presented to everyones'
delight.Tammy had Opies' lemonade stand set up along with tasty treats
for sale.
 
Quite a few talented folks donated one of a kind Mayberry themed items
for the silent auction.Steve Hinkley makes a killer collectible every time
for the Troy silent auction...lots of bidding on his stuff.
 
If you can't make Mayberry Days in Mt.Airy,give Troy a try.Yes,it is a much
smaller venue,but you can converse with the stars without waiting in a
long line...no hustle  bustle to deal with.

Pipe Smoking

I have smoked a variety of pipes.My father was a tobacco farmer...so nearly all 
country kids
used tobacco in some form.I started using snuff at age five,then progressed to 
rolling my own
cigars at about eight years old.I made my first pipe at about ten years old.I 
made it from a
corncob and used a dog fennel for a stem.I would alternate from cured tobacco 
to rabbit tobacco.
I quit using tobacco in 2006.

occurred.As our guest speaker was standing at the podium,the arm holding the

When I was a kid,we would yell sow-wee as we were slopping the hogs.
The way we called out,it would actually sound like we were saying 
Suewee Suewee.The hogs would come running much as a dog would

Most everyone knows that Otis was employed as a glue dipper at the
furniture factory.Whether it be day or night,Otis is mostly seen wearing
a coat and tie.I have worked in a factory and even the manager did not 
wear a tie.My question is,why would the director have Otis wearing one?
It just doesn't seem practical for a glue dipper to dress this way.

Mayberry bliss

As usual,our trip to Mt.Airy was wonderful.The original cast members and tribute
artists did a splendid job of entertaining.I've grown accustomed to them being
spot on each visit.
 
This last trip made me realize something though.The thing that I enjoy the 
mostis seeing old friends again and meeting new ones.Birds of a feather thing I 
guess.If they're Mayberry people,that means they're of good character. Again,I 
embarrassed myself at the trivia contest.Ken Junkin came up with somekiller 
questions this year.I feel fortunate to have gotten two correct this year.The 
contest is not for the faint of heart,but it is fun.It is usually one of 
threeregulars that win it.The lady that won it this year said this was her 
eleventh time as champ.The questions were so tough she missed six.Another one 
has won itI think six or seven times. Again,Jeff Koontz did a great job with 
the silent auction.As usual,Jim Clark isinvolved with a lot of Mayberry 
stuff.Thanks to a whole bunch of volunteers alot of fun was had by all. Of all 
the venues offered,I think Colonel Tim's Talent Show is the crème de la 
crème.If you ever get the chance to go,I would advise you to take the trip.

Ringadingdingit's almost here!The intent of this post is to hopefully 
encourage you
to help out with the silent auction on Saturday.The hours of operation for the 
auction
are 10:00-12:00.I have been involved with the auction for the last nine years.I 
do not
consider myself an artisan,but the bystanders seem to enjoy bidding on the

Was watching Matlock last night..our very own Amzie Strickland (Miss Rosemary) 
played
a significant role in the episode.She was still the same prim,proper and demure 
lady as
she portrayed on TAGS.

A time to reflect

Today makes one year since Andrew Samuel Griffith departed this earth.I vividly 
recall receiving a call
from my wife as I was driving.She told me to pull over as she had something to 
tell me.My first thought
was that something had happened to a family member or close friend.I guess he 
would sort of fit some-
where in that category.
 
He started his career as a monologist and ended it as one of the premiere 
actors of all time.I still fail to
understand why he never received an Emmy nomination for The Andy Griffith Show 
or for Matlock.
 
His character portrayed a wonderful example of a father,friend and law 
enforcement officer.I'm sure Maggie,
Betty Lynn,Jim,Elinor and several other TAGS members will grieve in their 
remembrance of Andy.But,by the
same token,they will remember certain scenes,retakes,and meetings that will 
make them smile.

Aunt Bee the Warden

I recently viewed the episode Aunt Bee the Warden.Otis tries to escape the 
rock by
hiding in the laundry service truck for a quick getaway.Aunt Bee has the driver 
open the
back door of the truck and she commences to beat the bags of laundry in search 
of Otis.
Otis starts yelling immediately,but she never hit the bag he was in.She hit the 
bags to the
left,right ,top,and bottom of Otis,but never in the bag he was hiding in.So my 
question is,
why would he give himself away by yelling?

A friend of mine has been charged for killing a man with sandpaper.To be honest,

Happy Happy Joy Joy

I do not own copies of all the episodes,but I now have access to the next
best thing.I subscribed recently to Netflix.I can now watch any TAGS episode
my little heart desires.
 
It is a delight to watch an episode in its entirety.I would get so infuriated
when the tv network kept snipping away to make airtime for more commercials.
I am now viewing little parts that I had forgotten were there.

Chapter soiree

On the 18th of this month,we had our Shakedown!Shakedown!Chapter annual 
cookout.We
had the traditional cookout fare with twenty six in attendance.We had three 
very special
guests.
 
Jeff Howard Sprague Branch,Tammy Millie Hutchins Branch,and Phil Ernest T 
Fox.Jeff
and Phil regaled us with their guitars and songs.Phil did a solo with his gas 
can.They were all
dressed in character.The rain held off and a good time was had by all.We had 
five members
from another chapter join us.

A couple of nights ago I spotted two Mayberry characters on Matlock.Looking 
prettyas ever was Betty Lynn.Pat Hingle also appeared on the show. Dewey in NC

neck...Everything made the same noise:CACCCK!I came to 
a conclusion:I am not old,I am crispy!

Mayberry in Westminster

I will be attending Mayberry in Westminster in a couple of weeks.I would be 
very pleasedin meeting some of the digest members who also plan to attend.If

getting someone's goat is based on the custom of keeping a goat in thestable 
with a racehorse as the horse's companion.The goat becomes a settling 
influencefor the Thoroughbred.If you owned a competing horse and were not above 
some dirtybusiness,you could steal your rival's goat (it's been done) to upset 
the other horse and makeit run a poor race. Thank goodness those goats were 
not loaded as our dear 'ol Jimmy was.

House demolition

I feel certain everyone on the digest,and elsewhere,has their own opinion about 
the demolition
of Andy  Cindi's old house.My opinion is that she has absolute power and right 
to do as she
pleases.Andy evidentily did not state in a will anything specific to be done 
with the house upon 
his demise.
 
I had a conversation today with a friend of mine.He and Andy were really good 
friends.He has
been to Andy and Cindi's house quite a few times.He said Andy is buried near 
the old homeplace.
He stated that Andy was a very,very private person.He did not even have his 
name on the mailbox.
 
My friend's opinion is that Andy would not have wanted the house to be turned 
into anything that
would bring traffic into his neighborhood...he was very courteous when it came 
to his neighbors.
 
Again,everyone has the right to their own opinion. Dewey in NC It takes the 
insect-eating Venus flytrap only half a second to shut its trap on its prey.The 
Venus flytrap can eat a whole cheeseburger'ol Goob didn't do too good at 
thecounty fair shooting gallery,but I bet he could put a whoopin' on 'ol Venus

TAGS related pet names

We used to have two cats named Andy  Thelma Lou.At one time we had a dog named 
Barney.At the end of April we will be getting a two month old cockapoo which 
will be namedEllie.Had it been a male,his name would have been Otis. A friend 
of mine has a beautifully restored 1953 Buick he calls Thelma Lou.A guy I know 
has a race car with the name Opie etched into both valve covers.Speaking of 
Opie,There is a friendof mine that lives in my hometown named Opie...not a 
nickname,it is his real name.To top it off,he has red hair,albeit receding as 
Ron Howard. Dewey in NC There is an average of fifty thousand spiders per acre 
in green areas.Don't even think about askingGomer or Barney to go into one of 
those areas.

Carnival

In the episode Opie and the Carnival,Opie,Andy,and Goober all take turns 
shooting the
guns with the bent sights,unbeknowest to them.Goober has this quirky little 
thing he does
before shooting the gun...he dabs his thumb against his tongue and then rubs 
his thumb
against the sight.Anyone know why he would do this?Is this a trait known to a 
certain part
of the USA or just something the writers came up with?

Mt.Airy coverage

The March edition of Our Statemagazine has two different articles on 
Mt.Airy.The first article is a four
page spread about The White Sulphur Springs Hotel,a grand ,late-19th-century 
resort that once stood
in Surry County that boasted of,among other things,a mineral spring --billed as 
a very fountain of
health--that was guaranteed to cure whatever ailed you.There are several 
accompanying photos
of the hotel.
 
The second article deals with the 70 greatest places to eat when you're on the 
go in North Carolina.
Mt.Airy has three of the top 70 vittles joints.In no particular order we have 
Speedy Chef,The Dairy
Center,and lastly,the world renowned Snappy Lunch.
 
As a sidenote,The Squeeze Box in nearby Pilot Mountain was mentioned.
Your local news stand/grocery store should carry a copy.In a few days,the 
article should be available
for viewing at ourstate.com.

Can't you just picture Emma Watson/Brand carrying her water jug(s) down to the 
mineral spring?

You know you're getting old when you find yourself standing next to your car 
with your keys in your
hand,but you can't remember whether you're going somewhere or you just got 
back.We all know
this is going to happen to us one day...probably.Just ask Gomer,he got turned

The one advertising gaffe I have spotted is in the Aunt Bee the Crusader 
episode.Mr.Frisbee has a
hidden moonshine still that Opie uncovers during the state's demolitition of 
said property.Towards
the end of the episode,you can see a bulldozer with the brand name Case written 
on the side of the
dozer,with the model name Terratrac written on the front.

IRS Agent in Mayberry

In the episode Aunt Bee on TV,she wins several prizes  on a game show while
in Hollywood.Upon the Taylor's return to Mayberry,an IRS agent comes to town 
and 
stops by the barber shop and asks the whereabouts of Andy Taylor.Upon meeting 
Andy,
the agent states that Aunt Bee owes taxes on the prizes.My question is,why 
would he be
looking for Andy as opposed to Aunt Bee,who actually won the prizes?

the show did not like to give any freebie shots of brands.Has anyone ever 
spotted one that got by the network?I

have.I will name the name brand in a
couple of days including the episode so you can view it for yourself.

Was flipping through the channels when I spotted Clint Howard in a movie 
entitled My Dog Skip.
Trust me,he was no cute little Leon this go round from what little I watched.
