Gunsmoke on TAGS, of Vice-Verse
TAGS fans, Was listening to a "Gunsmoke" radio drama from 1953. Doc (Howard McNear) was all upset when Matt got back into Dodge because there was a man peddling a miracle elixir cure that contained opium. The "Professor" peddling the miracle cure was played by John Dehner, who of course was still peddling miracle cures a hundred years or so later in Mayberry as Colonel Harvey! Let's just say Mayberry was much more friendly to him than Dodge. Then, in the next episode, Matt went up against an army deserter and suspected murderer played by James Best, aka the Guitar Player Jim Lindsey. And having listened now to the first two seasons of Gunsmoke on radio, Howard McNear is listed as one of the stars but John Dehner, who is on more episodes, is only ever listed as a guest star. Possible Andy Griffith reference
TAGS fans, Okay, this isn't exactly TAGS-related, but I wonder if it is Andy Griffith related. I've been reading through "The Complete Pogo" books from Fantagraphic Books and from Oct 11 to Nov 1, 1959 the Sunday strips involved a typically madcap story of the characters playing football. Unfortunately, they pop their football early on and play the rest of the game with a pumpkin. Made me wonder if it were in any way inspired by Andy's classic "What it was Was Football" routine. Walt Kelly, artist responsible for Pogo, was known to be a big fan of popular comedic albums, so I wouldn't be surprised if Andy's routine (which had come out just the year before) led to Walt's strips. Anyway, I bet the reason the writers indicated that the gas smelled like ammonia was because Freon was a trade-marked name belonging to DuPont (and may still be). Famous Poem
TAGS fans, Was reading a commentary on the book of Genesis by CC Crawford and he quoted the Shakesperean passage about, The quality of mercy is not strained. Of course, I immediately thought of Barney. That Dr. Crawford's now a jerk, y'know! TAGS fans, Saw two TAGS alumni on an episode of The Rockford Files yesterday. Arlene Galonka (Millie) was there, playing a Hollywood agent. Still beautiful, but a little older. The other alumni was a bigger surprise, though. Jim was in a hotel room and, hanging on the wall, was a print of the painting that hangs over the Taylor's fireplace. I wonder if there's any chance it was the exact same prop (that someone found in a stock room a decade after it last showed up in Mayberry)? TAGS' biggest guest star, again
TAGS fans, I appreciate the reminder (why did I need it?!?!?) of Buddy Ebsen as possibly the biggest guest star. I think that may be right as he had already had big roles in Davy Crockett and many other movies. As much as I like Alan Hale Jr. (and concede that he is bigger physically) I think he was viewed more as a character actor until he showed up on Gilligan. Biggest Guest Star
TAGS fans, Of all the guest stars who went on to big fame after their TAGS appearance, I'd say Jack Nicholson was the biggest. But, I was wondering: who was the biggest guest star at the time of their appearing? (For instance, the biggest name to show up on The Beverly Hillbillies would be John Wayne; on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Danny Thomas.) Now, assuming we don't count the pilot episode ('cause it was on another show), in which case it'd be Danny Thomas again, my guess would be Ruta Lee. My two cents on the cat
TAGS fans, My impression of the scene where Aunt Bee drops the vase out of the window on the cat was that she had seen it was Otis. After all, he didn't make a very convincing cat noise. Stamps
TAGS fans, Trying to figure out who and why and how the Post Office decides who to honor with stamps can be an interesting (and maddening) study. For instance, fans of Louis L'Amour (at his death in 1989 he was the best-selling author in American history, don't know if he's been passed) have been petitioning for a stamp honoring him for years. Still nothing. And as for the rule about a person being dead, they've been known to stretch that, too. Remember the Star Wars stamps a couple years ago that had images of Harrison Ford and Mark Hammill? Both are still living. The P.O.'s excuse was that the paintings were of fictional characters, yet they went out of their way to make them look like the real-life actors. If we really want TAGS stamps, we can always print our own. You can buy a program from the Post Office that allows you to put your own images--even your own face--on stamps and print them on your home PC. James Arness sells Matt Dillon stamps on his web site using a program like this. Not meaning to throw any cold water. If/when the P.O. offers TAGS stamps, I'll be first in line at our local branch! Return to Mayberry
TAGS fans, I watched the DVD of Return to Mayberry yesterday and had some thoughts I want to share with you all. 1] I'd been watching my VHS tape (recorded live the night it was originally broadcast) for 20 years now and it was great to have such a clear picture. And, for the most part, the sound was incredible. For some reason, though, on my DVD you can't hear the choir singing 14A. Andy and Barney react to it, but it doesn't come through on my copy. Is it that way for everyone? (And, on a strange auditory note, it was strange to see Andy and Barney walking away with the flag and NOT hear Bryant Gumbel talking about what was coming up on the Today show.) 2] Ever wonder who did Barney's make-up for the clown act? For an only OK performance, the makeup was really well done. Could Barney have picked that skill up at the Y? 3] It looks like there's only 50-100 people at that rally, but somehow word circulates enough for Andy to win as a write-in (The toughest kind of election there is, according to Barney). 4] Ben Woods' campaign seems rather mean-spirited for Mayberry. I can't imagine him getting elected under any circumstances. 5] I'm just making assumptions where GG are concerned, but doesn't it seem odd that in 20 years neither Gomer, Goober, Howard or Barney would have gotten married? Now, I know Barney's heart belonged to only one woman, but I would have figured one of the other three to marry. Gomer should have married Whats-Her-Name that he always dated on his show. (Maybe he did and we just don't know it.) 6] What are the chances that Andy Jr. and Andelina are off somewhere at the same college? 7] Of all the return movies different shows have done, this is far-and-away my favorite. (Star Trek: Wrath of Kahn would come a close second, especially if they hadn't given us The Motion Picture first.) Alumni Spotting
TAGS fans, Just spotted one of the Bookie Barber's co-horts on Get Smart. He was playing a henchman and didn't have any lines. Funny how a guy like that--who was probably as nice as anyone off-stage--could make a career out of playing bad guys just because he sortof looked sinister. I don't know his name, but he's the rather round-faced guy who Barney wonders what he would have looked like without the facial. Centennial Reply
TAGS fans, Just a note about Andy's appearance in Centennial. David Jansen did a great job of narrating the miniseries, but if they had followed the book a little closer it should have been Andy's character narrating. Maybe they thought that would have made things sound folksy or something, but I always wished they would have done an alternate version with Andy doing the narration. I was watching Return to Mayberry yesterday and, having recently finished season one of Matlock I kept thinking of Andy as Ben Matlock rather than Andy Taylor, especially early on before I got sucked into the movie more. If I were to vote for a favorite Andy line not from TAGS, it would probably be from Rustler's Rhapsody (where he plays one of the bad-guys). Andy's character is trying to recruit the other bad-guys into joining him and says something like, It may not turn into a range war, exactly, but there'll be a lot of killing. I promise you a LOT of killing. It's just so funny coming from Andy. Sam www.tuttles.net ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Bloopers
TAGS fans, Spotted two bloopers from season one today. In Opie's Charity, when Andy opens the door for Annabelle Silby, he's wearing a catcher's mitt on his left hand, but when he goes through the door it has disappeared. And then, in Mayberry on Record Ellie fixes a Sunday for Andy, then he slides it over to Opie and not only has the dish gotten bigger, there's way more whipped cream and less chocolate sauce. Maybe it was on purpose, like the way Karen Allen's clothes stay clean in the new Indiana Jones no matter what she goes through (which was an homage to the women in the old serials, who could go through anything and still look perfect).
