Ron Howard and Jerry Paris and Happy Days

2022-02-08 Thread Harriet Browder
> Ron Howard was a guest on the Smartless Podcast

Interesting article, Jeff. Thank you for posting.

I had to share the one paragraph when Ron calls Jerry Paris a genius. I’m a
member on the FaceBook group Dick Van Dyke Show and Paris is a beloved
character. Ron is so humble. He says he was offered chances to direct Happy
Days episodes but didn’t want to rob the cast of even one week of no Jerry.
Ron’s hair may be cut big city style but his heart is shaped in a bowl.

Another TAGS link is Jerry’s wife on DVD Show…Ann Morgan Guilbert who appeared
in Aunt Bee’s Cousin.

Mayberry spreads far and wide.

New Ron Howard movie

2019-07-16 Thread gmsproductions
Ron Howard's new movie "Hillbilly Elegy" is being filmed here in Macon,
Georgia. There have been lots of questions as to whether or not Ron is, or
will be, in town, but so far so sightings.

Quite honestly, everyone here is looking in the wrong places - the filming
locations. He wouldn't show up there until the best time to do anything -
tomorrow. So he may be with Mr. Dave trying out a homemade fishing lure.
I'm pretty sure he's not hanging out in the woods with his merry men helping
someone who's down on his luck. So far, no pies or hams have been reported
missing. Of course he could still be in the woods looking for men with
shiny, silver hats who walk in the trees. But when and if he arrives, I'm
fairly certain he will come in on the bus that says "MACON" on the front.

Regarding the Ron Howard appearance in Greensboro, Ann, I will not be able to
be there, but if I did make it I think I would like to ask Ron Howard if he had
any regrets about getting involved in politics in 2008. Our little Opie has
done so many wonderful things, not only while on TAGS, but even all the later
marvelous movies he has directed. In my opinion, not a clunker in the
bunch. But also, in my opinion, I do not think he should have ever gotten
involved in politics. There have so many examples over the years of
Hollywood types getting involved in politics turning out badly, that we could
have seen this coming.

At any rate, anyone going to the gathering, tell Opie hi from all of his long

Ron Howard the actor and Jack Dobson

2014-03-12 Thread Silvia Boosten
Hi Mayberry Friends,

Ron Howard surely is a wonderful, and very natural, actor.
The scene where he looks at Andy in A Medal For Opie where Andy says, I want
you to know one thing, I'm disappointed in ya.  His expression says exacting
how badly he feels.

Ron Howard played Seth, Jason's friend in the Walton's.
Seth dies later from leukemia.  He gives Jason his flute.
The scenes are ones I won't forget.

Jack Dodson played in Happy Days as Ritchie's friend,

Ron Howard

2014-03-11 Thread Victor Friskey
In response to P.D. King's post about Ron Howard.

I would agree he was a fine child actor. I think you mentioned something about
Shirley Temple. ..The two of them
can't be fairly compared. Shirley was a big screen movie star, Ron was a small
screen star. Shirley was popular in a time
when the country was coming out of the Depression and she gave people a release
from their every day lives. Ron
was performing in the sixties when we were living in a time of prosperity.
In 1933-34 Shirley outdrew every Hollywood actor on the big screen including,
Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Katherine Hepburn, Rita
Hayworth, and Clark Gable. Why she never got an Oscar for performing I'll never
know. As far as child actors of 60's and 70's on television I have to agree no
other male child measured up to Opie Taylor. Most were given lines that were
beyond there years and were saddled with worn out catch phrases. You got it
Dude. the Olsen twins, On Full House or Whatcha talkin' 'bout, Willis ? Gary
Coleman, on Different Strokes. The kids on Leave it to Beaver sometimes sounded
like they were reading their lines. The kid on Dick Van Dyke, talked to loud.
But when we look at the female child actresses we have to consider Melissa
Gilbert (Laura Ingalls) of Little House. Michael Landon was supposed to be the
star
but Melissa stole the show. No other female child actress could measure up to
her...And like Ron Howard went on to become an award winning director, Melissa
Gilbert became a fine adult actress in her own right. So I give Ron Howard the
best male child actor recognition in the last 50 years but I also recognize
Melissa Gilbert as the best female child actress.

Ron Howard

2014-03-09 Thread Marguerite
ITA Janet. Ron Howard was as good as Shirley Temple or Jane Withers, two child
actors from the 30's. If you look at those Olson twins, they often seemed to
look off camera so one can assume they were being coached. Or Gary Coleman. He
would say something cute then kind of grin or make a face as tho he was saying
aren't I cute?. In addition, RH didn't have the one liners and catch phrases
everybody has today. Even Richie C would, when angry, call someone buck oh
and when in love sang Blueberry Hill. The Olson twins as Michelle would say
ooh, you're gonna get it mister or sister depending upon who it was. The
Griffith show didn't do that. Except for Leon and his pbj sandwiches nobody
did the same thing more than a few times. It made things more realistic, IMO.

These opinions are just mine and may not represent the opinions of the rest of
the board.

Re: Ron Howard

2014-03-09 Thread pdking77
Marguerite,
I tend to agree with you, but to be fair you're comparing child actors from
completely different eras. Ron was a young actor where venues small and
exposure was limited. Between Ron's time and that of the Olsen twins the
internet and cable/satellite options exploded, talent pools, as a result were
thinned. Fifty or sixty years ago the cream truly rose to the top. The likes
of Macaulay Culkin and the Olsen twins, et al, would have remained unknowns
when Ron was Opie. Let's bring Our Gang into the conversation. What made
them different was that they were 'natural' children, at least during the Hal
Roach days (the abominable MGM days were different). They didn't act, they
were themselves, even using their own real names. Shirley Temple auditioned to
be in Our Gang, but was turned away because of her acting skills, not in
spite of it. The most endearing scene, and short, (in my opinion) for the Our
Gang comedies was Bobby 'Wheezer' Hutchins in Dogs is Dogs. Could Shirle
y Temple, either Olsen, or Macaulay have made that short work? Absolutely
not. A young Ron Howard? Very likely, but honestly, probably not quite as
well. But the days of child actors like Ron are gone, never likely to be seen
again.

Rance Howard great in another Ron Howard Film

2011-10-22 Thread GRITTON, JOE A
This weekend I watched the Ron Howard Film Angels and Demons. This film was
the Sequel to the Davinci Code.. both based on controversial Dan Brown Novels.

This film, like many of Ron Howard's..was not Mayberry..but it was very well
done in the genre. I was pleasantly surprised to see his father, Rance as
Cardinal Beck during the Papal Conclave. He was very convincing. They guy
can be everything from a Gold Truck Security guy, to a Governor Limo driver..to
a Party Guest, to a Who (in Grinch) to now a Cardinal. Let's all say it
together That's the actor in the man.

What surprised me , however, was that I did not see brother Clint. After
reviewing the cast in IMDB I noticed another Howard, though..Cheryl. The Wife
of Ron played a scientist. So no Clint..but Cheryl..the mother of Bryce Dallas
Howard was in the film.

Ron Howard Film Comments

2011-08-22 Thread jgrit1
I was able to Watch Ron Howard's recent movie, The Dilemma. As Howard films go,
I woudn't rate it as one of the best, but the appearance of his brother Clint
and his father Rance are delightful. Most know that Ron always tries to put
his family memebers in his movies, and this one is no exception. Clint plays a
persnickity manager of a Wedding venue. Rance plays an old man in a married
couple celebrating 40 years of marriage. The intersting thing is his first
line Where's Ronny? He is talking about one of the main characters but one
can't help but be taken back to the set of the Andy Griffith Show and wonder
how many times he uttered that phrase as his budding actor son played in parts
unknown.

I enjoyed your story Ken. regarding this My wife worked behind that soda

Ron Howard Story

2011-08-06 Thread jgrit1
I was watching Dave Letterman last night, and his guest was Tom Hanks. Hanks
was promoting a current movie (Larry Crowne) but got into a discussion with
Dave about Ron Howard, the Opie Producer that he has great respect for and has
worked with many times.

He talked about back in the day when they were working on the movie Splash,
when Hanks was just a budding hopeful actor but Howard was already a respected
producer. They were in Manhattan and it was the wee hours of the morning.
Wanting to get way a little bit, Howard asked Hanks it he wanted to go to
Dunkin Donuts. He said he knew how to get to one that was open 24 hours.
(this whole time Hanks is impersonating Ron Howard which makes it funny).

They get to the Dunkin Donuts and despite the 24-hour advertisment, it is
closed for cleaning for two hours. They had walked quite a ways in the wee
hours of the morning to get there. Exasperated Ron says simply well that's
disppointing

Ltterman roared with laughter as he considered how most people would have
reacted and repeated that's disappointing . It was a funny story but a
testament to what a cool cucumber (no picle pun intended) our Opie turned out
to be. He didn't hold his breath or throw a tantrum on the floor...just..well
that's disapointing.

What I find so refreshing is that he not only didn't get into a snit over it,
he didn't use a lot of four-letter expletives, which is so disgustingly common
these days. I appreciate people who keep their language clean! Seems that's

LOS ANGELES - The creations of Stephen King have been keeping people up at
night for decades, but Ron Howard has been losing sleep lately for a different
reason: The Oscar-winning filmmaker is becoming a bit obsessive about his plan
to adapt King's most epic creation, The Dark Tower, as a film franchise and
tie-in television series.

I really can't stop thinking about it, Howard said while shaking his head.
We've been meeting and talking, and I've been reading and researching and just
kind of living with it. I've been constantly going through stuff, and I've just
been relistening to it (on audio books) on my iPod, and we've been sending
e-mails back and forth, 'What about this approach? What do you think of this
idea?' We're finding the shape of it. We're moving quickly now, as quickly as
we can, and I feel challenged in the most exciting ways.

As challenges go, bringing the seven-novel Dark Tower series to the screen is
a colossal one, but Howard's ambitions match it. The director of Apollo 13
and The Da Vinci Code is teaming up with producer Brian Grazer and
screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to present King's magnum opus as a feature-film
trilogy with a tie-in television series filling in the gap between the
blockbuster releases.

The same creative team took home Oscars for their collaboration on A Beautiful
Mind, and it was while working on that film that Goldsman brought Howard the
idea of adapting the genre-mashing Dark Tower and bringing to life its
central character, a nomadic gunslinger named Roland Deschain, who tangles with
magic, monsters and mutants.

We worked on it for a year before we even met with him, Howard said. It was
all about putting something together that was good enough and getting such an
understanding of the material that Stephen King would say, 'Yes, that's the way
into this story.'

The project has not been greenlighted yet, but Universal Pictures and NBC
Universal Television Entertainment announced in September the plan to chronicle
the story as a multimedia event. If all goes as planned, Howard will direct the
first film and then the first season of a tie-in television series, both of
which Goldsman will write. Two more films would follow.

In a statement, King gushed about the endeavor: I've been waiting for the
right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV
viewers . . . [and] respect the origins and the characters in 'The Dark Tower'
that fans have come to love.

The King fantasy epic began in 1982 and has spanned seven novels - the original
hardcover editions add up to a staggering 3,795 pages and 30 million copies
sold - with an eighth installment, tentatively titled The Wind Through the
Keyhole, announced by the author last year. King released an additional
novella in 1998, and for three years King has been adding new chapters to the
saga within the pages of Marvel Comics.

*** Article: Ron Howard Talks 50 Years of Opie ***

2010-09-26 Thread Allan Newsome

Hey Folks,

There's a very nice interview with Ron Howard about the 50th Anniversary
of The Andy Griffith Show.

Jim Clark posted the link over at the TAGSRWC Facebook page
(http://www.facebook.com/tagsrwc) and thought the folks here on the
Digest wouldn't want to miss it either.

You'll find it at the URL below ( I shortened it so it would be easier

Small cast counts and Ron Howard

2010-03-23 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
We have an interesting discussion going on about Episodes with the
fewest actors.

Now if I put on my Andy hat, I'd say we need a common uniform score
sheet, that might be set up something like this.

Main characters,Guest stars,Speaking Background
actors, Nonspeaking background actors

A MAIN CHARACTER would like Andy Opie..all the way through Goober
Gomer, Howard, Thelma Lou Helen.
The Book Inside Mayberryby Harrison and Habeeb, has a good chart in
the back that you can look at to see what main characters were in which
episodes etc.

GUEST STARS would be Like Ernest T Bass, Briscoe Darling, Uncle
Ollie, Aunt Nora, John Masters, Clara etc.

If you use the Database that Allan has on the website, you can get a
good list of the combination of Guest stars and Main characters..and
also the next category..SPEAKING BACKGROUND ACTORS. This would be like
Tom Hamilton, Jud, Asa,

So for those three categories..you can get a pretty good count.

The toughest is the NONSPEAKING BACKGROUND ACTORS, therefore
non-credited background actors. You pretty much have to watch and
count. (Mr. Schwamp among them)

The Biggest Crowd scene I can think of, were the Gold Truck Episode, The
Baseball Game, the Seth Taylor statue Dedication, when the Governor
came, etc..and the crowd in Opie's dream when he won all those
medals..Other big crowd scenes I'm sure.

So entries should say things like

3 main characters, no guest stars, 2 speaking background on 0
nonspeaking background

0r

5 main characters 2 guest stars, no background actors at all

At least that's how I would score it.

Entertainment Magazine has the sad tale of an adult who was a child star
who had died ..and it talks about the difficultly that Child stars
often have after growing up.Then it lists 8 child stars who made it
big as adults...#1 on the list..Ron Howard. That's our boy!!!

Ron Howard to appear at Hollywood Show?

2009-06-19 Thread Joel Rasmussen

There's going to be a One Time Only Happy Days cast reunion at Burbank,
California's Hollywood Show July 18 19.

Although Ron Howard is not officially listed as a guest, all the rest of the
cast will be there and the website does say there will be a special surprise
guest. Will this be Ron?

At the March show, they had a Back To The Future cast reunion and the special
surprise guest was Michael J. Fox.

Ron's dad, Rance, and brother Clint have both attended the Hollywood Show in
the past.

Now, I'm not saying anything, but...

2009-01-14 Thread Dave Lambert
Hi Stan,

I think I must have missed some prior postings about the Ron Howard special. I
have Comcast cable service with ON DEMAND. I found the special aired on
TCM is available via ON DEMAND for free for the next 3 or 4 weeks. It was in
the free movie section. I watched the first hour of the ~90 minute special
last night. It's a great overview of Ron's career, and wonderful to hear his
comments about his childhood roles and many of the nearly 20 movies he's
directed. I highly recommend it if it's available on your Comcast service.

TCM doc in Dec - RON HOWARD: 50 YEARS IN FILM

2008-08-25 Thread beastooge
Press release from Turner Classic Movies...

Oscar-Winning Filmmaker Ron Howard to Relive His Extraordinary Career in New
TCM Original Special RON HOWARD: 50 YEARS IN FILM

Intimate, Career-Tracing Conversation to Follow in the Footsteps of Past TCM
Specials on Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg

Film Critic and Documentarian Richard Schickel Producing Special for Debut in
December 2008

Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg have more in common than
winning Academy Awards® for their work. These directors sat down for in-depth
interviews with film critic and documentarian Richard Schickel for three
critically acclaimed Turner Classic Movies (TCM) specials. This December,
Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard will join that elite list in a new TCM
original special called RON HOWARD: 50 YEARS IN FILM.

The 90-minute special will trace the actor/director’s career from a
first-person perspective. Howard will discuss each movie he has made, from
1977’s low-budget GRAND THEFT AUTO to major blockbusters like SPLASH,
BACKDRAFT, APOLLO 13, THE DAVINCI CODE, PARENTHOOD, EDTV and the film that
earned him an Oscar, A BEAUTIFUL MIND. He also will talk about his latest film,
the eagerly anticipated FROST/NIXON, in which Frank Langella will reprise his
Tony-winning performance as President Richard M. Nixon and Michael Sheen will
play famed interviewer David Frost.

Howard will talk extensively about his career as a child star in such movies as
THE MUSIC MAN and THE COURTHSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER and the landma
rk television series THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. Howard, whose fame grew as when he
starred in the movie AMERICAN GRAFFITI and the TV series HAPPY DAYS, will
describe how these experiences influenced him as a filmmaker. The interview
will be peppered with memorable scenes from Howard’s extensive career.

I can’t think of a more appropriate filmmaker to profile than Ron Howard. He
has proven that high quality and enormous box office success can go
hand-in-hand, said Tom Brown, vice president of TCM original productions.
We’re also thrilled to be working once again with Richard Schickel on another
insightful retrospective of one of today’s most successful filmmakers.

Ron Howard

I couldn't believe my eyes as I read the paper today and saw that Ron Howard
was here in Cincinnati yesterday! Apparently Ron Howard, Tom Hanks and Dennis
Miller are on a bus tour of some of the major league baseball stadiums around

I sure wish I had known he was going to be here, then maybe I could have
finaggled a ticket and actually got to meet our Opie!!! (though I'm sure
security was tight around them). Either way I was thrillled (as the
lady reporter said) to know that Ron Howard was only a mile away from my house.
