both seemed about the same to me.
I'm connected through a DSL line, using MSIE 6 and Netscp 7.1
Both seemed to load fast except for 1 image the first time, and about
half that time on refresh.

Can anyone tell me why images would load faster when the user is
browsing with Netscape rather than Internet Explorer 6.0?

It appears that Internet Explorer is not caching the images.

Try this page in both Netscape and Internet Explorer:

You could register the new domain and point it at the old domain leaving it
as the original site.

[wdvltalk] A bit OT, about changing domains

2003-01-15 Thread jennifer
Hi all,

A client of mine chose a particularly long and unwieldy domain name a
couple of years ago, and is now asking about the feasibility of changing
to something easier/faster to type. I can see the advantages: fewer
spelling errors/typos so fewer 404s, easier to remember and better impact
on promotional material. BUT they'll temporarily lose all those users
who've bookmarked the site, and those who are referring to old brochures
etc, and I'll also have to contact all the sites that link to them at
present and ask them to change the link.

So, I was wondering, has anyone seen any research on how people generally
arrive at sites these days, ie is it mostly via links, via search engines,
or by typing the URL into their browser?

TIA, Jen

[wdvltalk] RE: how to install previous versions of Access

2003-01-15 Thread Dave Sebaste
It's generally not recommended, as you will have DLLs trouncing all over
each other, with a strong possibility of mismatched DLLs. If you *must* do
it, it is suggested you start with the earliest version, installing
subsequent versions into different directories (folders). While many of the
"core" features will work, don't be surprised if you run into problems with
some of the more ancillary features. This guidance applies to all MS Office
applications, and most applications, in general.

The setup wizards have a rule that they will not install an older version of
a file (i.e., DLL)over a newer version... that's why you will likely have
trouble if you start with a later version of the application and try to
install an earlier version concurrently.

All the best,

Dave

Interesting. At work I have all three installed on an XP Prof machine,

Access 2000. I was hoping I didn't have to uninstall what I already have on
my machine at home before installing the others.

You are probably going to need different PCs. You may not be able to run
Access 2 on current machines since if I recall correctly it is a Windows 3.1
program. Office 95 shipped with Access 95 not Access 2.

You should be able to install Access 97 on the same computer as 2000 but it
isn't recommended. You will have to uninstall Office 2000. Install Access 97
in a separate directory (not Program Files/MS Office). Then reinstall Office
2000 in order to have a prayer of it working because dll installed in the OS
system file may conflict.

My partner was working at a major company last year where he used
Office/Access 97 on NT 4, Windows 2000 with Office/Access 2000 and XP Pro
with Office/Access 2002. That was the only way their networks support people
would allow multiple versions of Access by one user - 3 separate machines.

I've done it before, but I'm trying to remember if I moved the Access before
or after I upgraded to 2000. I think you can do it either way, just make
sure that when you are installing you make a completely different folder for
the new Access. It will try to install it over the current version of Access
which you don't want.

[wdvltalk] RE: php and forms

2003-01-15 Thread Mignon Hunter
I will try and get a screen shot up either today or tomorrow. The
application and db are behind the firewall.

But, unfortunately, I have to use checkboxes. The data displayed can
have 1-6 individual items within anywhere from 1 -12 tables. Each
individual item needs the 3 choices - high, med, low. And more than one
item in the table can have the same level, hence, the need for
checkboxes.

What I'll probably need to do is develop the app so that the level is
mandatory if they choose an item. This will probably be my only means
of pairing the item with the level of severity.

That's my thinking at this stage.

Thx for the input

The biggest difference we ran into between VeriSign and Thawte was that

[wdvltalk] the joy of text [was Re: NN7.0 line spacing]

2003-01-15 Thread Franni Vincent
'Quite some client' indeed, Joseph - They have their moments...
If you've a WHSmith newsagent near you, you may even see the Book Awards
point-of-sale material on this one!
They've been really good in the press release about acknowledging the part
we've played - and they were absolutely over the moon that we went live on
deadline at 00.01am... And compared to the World Cup prediction project we
ran in the summer, this client has indeed been a joy to work with.

I'm really sorry I couldn't ask you guys to 'field trial' the online voting
on this one but the client was understandably paranoid about the Book
Awards short list getting out ahead of the press launch... it was someone
else's questions here on WDVL about pop-up windows that gave a pointer to
the solution to the 'how do you get all that damn info on the screen'
problem.

This is the first time WHSmith has had text voting on the Book awards
[which is what we bid for originally as mobile apps is what we do] & wound
up running the online side too. It's also the first project with a major
corporate sponsor for our Textaid joint venture which is my 'baby' so I'm
really pleased it's gone well.
Some sleep would be good... but that can wait!

[wdvltalk] Re: javascript and php/html forms

2003-01-15 Thread mconlon
Mignon,

I've been looking for a PHP list to join. Would you mind sharing
information about joining the php-db list you are using?

Thanks in advance, Maureen

[wdvltalk] RE: php and forms

2003-01-15 Thread Jon Haworth
Hi Mignon,

> So as you can see my second problem does not correctly correspond
> to the correct priority. The first (or all) element(s) in the
> level array may be null.

I noticed that you're supplying checkboxes for the user to select a priority
level - I think you might be able to sidestep this problem completely if you
use radio buttons instead. Excuse the ASCII art, but if you've currently
got this:

  Priority: [ ] High[ ] Low

You might consider changing it to:

  Priority: ( ) High( ) Low (x) n/a

(notice how the "not applicable" radio button is selected by default - this
way, you'll always have information for this particular priority, even if
it's "ignore this information")

As a rule of thumb, checkboxes are for groups of options that can be used in
conjunction with each other:

Select the pets you own:[ ] Cat
  [ ] Dog
  [ ] Budgie
  [ ] Wildebeest

... and radio buttons are for groups of options where only one at a time
makes sense:

  Are you: ( ) Female
( ) Male
( ) Unsure

If you've got a URL to the page in question (and if I have a coffee) I can
probably explain myself better :-)

Cheers
Jon
