Why, oh why, oh why does a document need executable code (macros) in it? The only exception would be spreadsheets... Tim submits a simple example: Our law firm submits dozens of legal documents a day - some to clients, some to the courts, some to other services and users. These documents are not always generated from scratch - otherwise, we'd have dozens of secretaries sitting around pounding on dozens of word processors, making dozens of mistakes in the process. Many of the documents are built from databases using "macros" or "executable code" simply because that's the only cost-efficient way of doing so (and accuracy is paramount). Moreover, many documents require change tracking as they're passed back and forth between parties, and must be in a specified format (usually some version of Word or WordPerfect). These activities require scripting that have access to resources (i.e. databases) outside of the the document's sandbox. While I'm not defending executable code in documents as always appropriate, I do see it as a viable solution to many business situations, particularly those that are tightly regulated. I daresay if we were required to fill out two or three dozen electronic forms for each website we build we'd be looking for ways to automate it. :-) Microsoft has always been about giving power to the user...power to accomplish work, yes, but also power to wreck things if misused. Users need to be aware of that power and use it intelligently (uh, training?). [story from my own experience] Nobody blasts motorcycle companies for building and selling crotch rockets, yet every day stupid kids die on them doing stupid stuff. I ride an older motorcycle, carefully, well within the limits of the law, and yet last November still ended up with a broken wrist due to someone else's negligence. Power = responsibility. You don't always need that much power...that's where the market makes room for other solutions, like OpenOffice. - Original Message - From: "rudy" > and why would you need to virus scan reputable software? Because there have been occasions when very reputable software has been released on official CD and found to have been sent out with a virus infection. Ok, I don't recall this having happened very recently, but that just means it's overdue to happen again! Here are some Googled examples from a few years back: "A Japanese-language version of a Sega Dreamcast role-playing game has become infected with a computer virus. The game, Atelier Marie, includes a screensaver which is infected with the highly damaging Kriz virus. Although the Dreamcast itself is left unscathed by this, anyone loading the screensaver onto their PC from the game's CD-ROM will be in for an unpleasant surprise, when the virus activates on Christmas Day." (The Reguster, 2001) "A red-faced Corel has confirmed that a number of its recently released CorelDRAW 8.0 for Macintosh CD-ROMs also contained a virus." (1998) "We have received notice from the UK publication "Virus Bulletin" and a number of independent reports that the UK publication "PC Gamer" included a cover CD with files infected by the Win95/Marburg virusThe "smackplw.exe" infected file will get executed if you watch any of the movies on the CD " (1998) "The free Vellum 3D version 3.0 CD-ROM contains the Macintosh MBDF virus. ...Anyone running the Macintosh demo program who does not have a resident antivirus scanner will be infected with the virus." (CIAC, 1997) "We have come across another Microsoft CD ROM containing Concept, a MSWord macro virus. The CD ROM is called "The Microsoft Office 95 and Windows 95 Business Guide". (S&S, 1995) "In 1995, the first Word macro virus -- now called Concept -- was massively distributed by Microsoft on a CD-ROM called Microsoft Windows 95 Software Compatibility Test. The shipment went to hundreds of companies in August 1995. [1] Microsoft helpfully refused to acknowledge the severity of the problem for a few weeks. When it finally did, it named the virus "Prank" as spin control. Partly as a consequence of this release and another around the same time in which 5,500 more infected CD-ROMs were distributed by a different company generating support software for Microsoft Windows NT, the Concept virus is now very common "in the wild." Much more recently, Microsoft has distributed a word macro virus known as "Wazzu" multiple times. In September of last year, an edition of Microsoft's The Microsoft SPCD [Solution Provider CD] was distributed containing a Wazzu virus infected document. The CD was distributed to all Microsoft Solution Providers...One month later, Microsoft distributed Wazzu again, this time in Switzerland at ORBIT, an information technology exhibition. This sample of Wazzu was carried on a CD-ROM called "Letz Fetz on the Netz" and was in a document containing hot-line phone numbers for Microsoft Germany. Although Microsoft officials were informed of the contamination, the CD was distributed anyway. The Wazzu infected document was also downloadable from Microsoft's Swiss Website for a period of five days." I agree BJ. As a consultant I have clients that want me to review contracts, specifications and all sorts of other documents - including items they want me to put on their websites for them! If I wasn't opening attachments I'd starve to death very quickly. I'm afraid I fail to see the point of having access to the web and email if you aren't going to receive - either via download or from clients etc - documents as attachments. I certainly don't open any for strangers and like you I update NAV regularly. I also run Zone Alarm plus check with Uncle Bill about every ten days (when I get a quiet moment!) for any updates. New clients have to advise me first by phone of their email address and are told to which of mine they should send stuff until I am happy with them. I also tell them I want to know which version of their AV they are using (I then check the supplier site to see if it is current) and when they last updated Windows. Usually produces some long silences followed by a question such as "How do you mean?" or words to that effect! I've been pout all day so before I went I closed down my broadband, closed all programs and set off a full system scan. The report when I came back was that it was clean - so it seems that David's suggestion is probably right. I thought it was odd as I sue Eudora and not OE for all emails and that doesn't usually get infected. (Sure, there's always going to be a first time!) Just one point on this - do you guys and gals run a full system check while working, or do you leave the machine dedicated to the job? A full scan for me takes about five hours so having to shut down when I am here is a real PITA. I always have some non-computer work I can do, but that length of time takes some filling!
