RE:[wdvltalk] Computer problem update

2006-01-12 Thread Furry, Tim
Robert asked...
Tim do you know what model was for the motherboard this happened on? We
have several 270's... I would like to fix the problem before having it.

Tim responds:
I don't have one at my desk, and all the ones close to me are in use so
I can't crack one open. :-) I did hit the Dell site with the service
tags and it didn't have much info on the motherboard other than that it
came with one. Unfortunately, since we've outsourced the upgrading, I
probably won't see the inside of another one at all. If you want to
email me offlist we could talk about it more.

Re: [wdvltalk] Computer problem update

2006-01-11 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

It turns out that the computer that they purchased is not compatible

with the SBC DSL that they use. Is there some way to fix this?

There sure is...tell Dell to stop lying and make good on the support options
they're supposed to offer. DSL is in no way reliant on knowing anything
about your computer set up all you need is a working modem to talk to the
service and you're fine.

Now having the computer compatible with the modem is a different matter...

They finally found someone who knows what they are talking about. Seems
that they need version 6.1 of SBC. A neighbor came over and installed
it for them. I am just waiting to hear if it is still working this morning.

Re:[wdvltalk] Computer problem update

2006-01-11 Thread Furry, Tim
Riva,

I'm just now getting to this thread...was out on vacation. I don't think
you mentioned the Dell model...was it by any chance an Optiplex GX270?
Our school district bought a boatload of those from Dell, and they're
generally good machines, but the motherboard was revised and used a
different USB chip that has a tendency to fry itself. Symptoms include
frozen video, limited or no USB port response, and eventually total
failure to boot. We have recently finished negotiations with Dell to
replace ALL the motherboards on these machines (some 900 machines) free
of charge with a different version that uses the old chip. Most of the
fried machines I've looked at so far have visible burn or scorch marks
on the USB chip in the middle of the motherboard, so it's easy to tell.
At first we thought it was due to some people's PDAs sucking too much
juice through the ports but then we had several fail that weren't
supporting *any* USB devices (they were even using PS2 mice).

Hope it helps.

Even if it is it's only a matter of time before it isn't without a
firewall. She should get an internet router. They're plenty cheap and
great insurance. They allow visitors with laptops or other added puters
to share the connection as the occasion arises, and they don't impose
the awful overhead of a software firewall.

That's all hogwash. DSL need know nothing about any computer. Never
connect any computer directly to any cable or DSL modem. Get a cable/DSL
internet hardware router/firewall/switch for as little as $40 excluding
any rebates from Staples or Office Depot or Wal Mart or wherever.
Connect (network, either wired or wireless) the computer to the
internet router. Connect the internet router to the DSL modem. Use
your web browser to configure your internet router with whatever custom
settings SBC may require if it fails to work immediately right out of
the box.

It did boot initially and then they had some kind of problem with the
keyboard not working. I had her unplug the keyboard and try it in
another USB port and it worked fine. She then called Dell and they
sorted that out. Then she loaded the SBC on to her computer and it
worked fine until they shut it down. When they restarted the next day,
that is when all the problems started. How would I check for a virus?

What a load of bull, sorry but you have a clueless person at SBC. When
talking to support at SBC tell them she has XP Professional not Media
Center. As far as networking goes it is the exact same program because Media
Center is just a super set of applications that run on top of XP Pro. That
superset is the media features and they have nothing to do with the
internet.

SBC should be used through a router anyway because you want that firewall
protection.

Nah, it just means they have a script and don't know anything that isn't on
the script it isn't supported. That means any variation such as Tablet PC
