RE: [wdvltalk] OT: is i-LINK firewire for transferring data?

Hi Deb -

Yes, the i-Link is basically a Firewire connection -
http://searchsmb.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid44_gci749630,00.html

On my laptop, it uses a smaller connector than other Firewire devices. No
big deal though if you have the right cable.

As for the speed differences, it is my understanding (I haven't personally
tested, however) that Firewire 400 (the common one) and USB 2 are pretty
much the same speed.

Subject: [wdvltalk] OT: is i-LINK firewire for transferring data?

Hi,

My Toshiba laptop has an i-LINK firewire port. The cable is 6 pin to
4 pin and package says it's for connecting computer to camcorders, digital
cameras and mp3 players and also says connect a digital camcorder or other
FireWire device to your computer. Does anyone know if that would include
connecting to an external hard drive and being able to transfer my data for
backup purposes? I can't seem to get the laptop to recognize the external
using this cable. Could just be the same issue I had before and just have
to wait it out until it sees the external but I'm starting to think it may
be the wrong kind of connection or cable? I have done it using a USB2
cable, but of course firewire is going to be faster so hoping to make it
work. If one can connect a dig camera and transfer photos, I would think it
would work w/data but maybe I just don't know enough.

Thanks, Todd. I know my firewire is faster than USB2. I'll have to
play w/it some more - maybe it will recognize it yet.

Re: [wdvltalk] OT: is i-LINK firewire for transferring data?

2006-12-29 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Deb:

Firewire is Firewire at the end of the day - the different ends to the
cable are just to fit different sizes of devices (same as the mini USB2
connectors you get on cameras and phones - it's still USB2) so in theory
you should be OK.

In terms of speed, USB 2.0 is a little faster than Firewire 400 in pure
data rate (460Mbps) but from what I can recall (and it's still the
holiday season so correct me if the alcohol is talking here) USB 2.0
runs data transmissions serially so everything connected to the USB
channel has to share the bandwidth. Firewire runs parallel connections
so it can serve 400Mbps to each connection, but it can't run as many at
once as USB (hence USB is more popular).

The biggie here is that I don't think Firewire can downgrade its
connection speeds like USB 2.0 can: you can plug a USB 2.0 device into a
USB 1.1 socket and it will still run, just at a fraction of the speed.
From my experiences in the office, you can't get a Firewire 800 device
to function at all in a Firewire 400 socket.

This is the only reason I can think of why you can't get an external
Firewire drive to work in your existing Firewire setup as I've had no
problem using different cables and plug converters in the Firewire kit
at home and work.

Have a good New Year you lot!

I got it working. I had originally tried the hot plug-in but this
time I shut down the laptop and plugged in the fw cable and it
worked. Good info on the fw not being backwards compatible,
though. I would not have thought of that. Thanks.
