unfortunately only when either some developer implements that functionality,
or the AskBot developers offer the functionality in their code. :-(

I finally got some time to follow-up here, and I have good news! I
posted a question on the Askbot site and did some digging, and what
appears to be compatible functionality was already added:

http://askbot.org/doc/changelog.html
---
0.7.44 (Nov 11, 2012)

• Optional restriction to have confirmed email address to join forum (Evgeny)
---

We're currently running Askbot 0.7.43, so once we're upgraded to the
latest (0.7.48+) we should be able to enable this functionality and
allow local accounts.

Florian -- Once the upgrade is done, could you please help us verify
that this mechanism passes muster for the double opt-in you
described?

Kracked -- Once we're ready to roll out local accounts, could you be
available for any testing that we need to do?

Thanks,

I can have a look when the upgrade is done, yes. However, I don't know
how long it will take. Alex told me that he has a lot of individual code
in his repository, because of the wishes issued for AskBot, so it is a
hard and tedious task to merge that ;)

Yes, I am here to help.
As a new member of the TDF, I will do whatever is needed.

I have a Google account to log onto the system, but I would prefer to
use my normal email system[s].

I can have a look when the upgrade is done, yes.

Great.

 However, I don't know how

Fair enough.

Alex told me that he has a lot of individual code in his
repository, because of the wishes issued for AskBot, so it is a hard and
tedious task to merge that ;)

Would it be possible for us to try to upstream some of those changes
and/or externalize them as plugins to reduce our burden on each
upgrade? I'm not really sure what these wishes issued were, so I
don't have a good picture of the total amount of work we've layered on
top of the official source.

I don't have much experience with Django, but if there's a repo
available with our local changes, perhaps I or other members of the
community could help with some of this porting/upstreaming burden?

Thanks,
