Re: [WestNileNet] Science Cafe Birth of West Nile Foundation Investment Club
Dear Mandera, Thanks for raising your concerns. Nobody had ever asked the direction to Naalya so we took it for granted that those who are interested know the place. Next time when Richard is advertising I think he will take this into account. As Richard has said we shall see how best to share the recordings but the biggest challenge now is lack of website for the science cafe which could make it easier for others to access these things but slowly we are making progress. Also appreciate the fact that these are voluntary ventures for which one has to spare time out of jobs, so it can be a challenge at times in wanting to do these things. Just like many people are not able to attend due to their busy schedules, the same happens to the organizers too because they have to work to put food on their plate while taking time to give back to community. But good concerns raised. Christine On Tue, Jan 25, 2011 at 8:40 AM, Maandera ibmaand...@gmail.com wrote: Hi All, I have browsed the ideas shared on this net on the Investment Club. Dear members, I like the advice from Denis that 100,000= quarterly should be a starting point depending on how it moves, adjustments will be made.we pay this for one quarter and see how it moves then we contribute the second quarter etc. You know, we have not started but we are discussing too much ahead which would be good but at times those are the small things which make us fail. Some people are already talking of having more shares etc, this would not be bad but my suggestion would be to first take off with the amount which looks little for others and yet may not be easy for others to get. I would suggest that we start small and move slowly but surely otherwise we shall fail to take off. I tend to think that this expert advice from Denis was not without a reason. Distinguished Members of the West Nile Forum, My apologies that I could not attend the Science Cafe of 23/01/2011, I was for the burial of the Late Mzee Semi Oguda at Anyavu - Logiri. I'm grateful that a decision was taken to set up WNFIC and indeed asking them to draft their TOR is not way off. We all know that in most cases when candidates are being vetted for a job they are normally asked a prominent question, what new things do you think you will contribute to an organisation? In a way they are actually being asked to draft their TOR to see if it matches with the expectations of the hiring entity. Definitely we shall at an appropriate time review the TOR suggested by the WNFIC. Nonetheless we need the constitution and other instruments of good governance to stremline some of the important decisions we have taken. I think let's move on. However i am also concerned that you could reach such an important decision that fast by simply electing into office persons, asking them to develop their TORs, without putting in place the necessary constitution, especially on things concerning MONEY. I for one would have loved the Cafe meeting to elect persons to draft a concept note and a consititution to guide this investment initiative and then share it on this forum before finalizing this process. I have never known that you can hire a person, even if voluntarily and ask them to develop their own TOR and off you retire home happy. It is a shame that members who participated in this exercise didn't see any problem with such an arrangement. Please, I AM NOT IN ANY WAY QUESTIONING THE INTEGRITY OF THE PEOPLE YOU ELECTED TO MANAGE AFFAIRS OF THE WNFIC, i think they are a formidable team. However there are so many loose ends to such a brilliant initiative, i hope our own highly knoweledgeable investment advisors gave you the whole picture and not just stopped at how to use your pool of money to make more money. For example, through a proper constitution (whatever you want to call it), you would know what to do with one's entitlement God forbid if one member of the WNFIC passes on. Wendy, Thanks for raising this issue. For the record, I was neither the Chairperson, nor the Vice or even the treasurer. I was not a signatory to that account. I also raised the same issue during the Science Cafe at the Nalya meeting. I was not a signatory to the account and I was not in charge of the money. I also want my contribution. That initiative had several flows. We did not have a fund manager, neither where we educated about collective Investment Funds. We kept idle money which I understand other members ended up borrowing. I do not know the borrowers and I do not know whether borrowed funds where refunded. I did not borrow any money from that fund. Avutia was the treasurer. I think we shall cause a meeting of all the contributors of the Nile Initiative for a meeting. That time, we also did not have the Anti Corruption Court to Charge any person who embezzles public funds. But this new initiative is under a frame work of an organization which is Registered. Good day all brothers and sisters. I must say the entire idea is a great come up,but if not understood, then horns might lock!If am not mistaken(on a serious note by the way)am sure am the youngest member of this mail forum. It so happens that when I was still in high school(read: St .Mary's College,Kisubi)I happen to have been on a committee that led an Investment club as Smack Real Investment club with small dealings within school,BUT,we were managed by the Capital Markets Authority that gave us the opening guidelines, constitution, brokerage support etcand at the end of my study there,we were awarded certificates of accreditation for what initiative we started and fully managed. The point am driving home here is that we need to seek prior guidance from the capital markets authority on the working of investment clubs in this country. All i know is that the guidelines for the schools investment clubs are different from those of the open country,so please take my quality information into consideration. I'll be so glad if all is done the right wayand believe me you,I'll be sure to join as soon as NOW!/Thank you so much. regards, Buni Christopher Saddam On 25/01/2011, alaka caleb calebal...@gmail.com wrote: Onzoma I think you are spot on. Re: [WestNileNet] Science Cafe Birth of West Nile Foundation Investment Club
Hi Christine, Thanks for the response. I appreciate the efforts being made by those who make time to contribute to the community. I do recognize the time it takes to edit recordings since I also try it sometimes at an amateur level. On the issue of a website for the Cafe, I guess with the hordes of options, the progress you are hinting on should be close to its end. All the best of success for the community. I also look forward to the directions (in my case, for public transport) to the Cafe in Naalya. I would love to attend it some day too, God willing. Maandera On Tue, Jan 25, 2011 at 8:32 AM, Christine Munduru cmund...@gmail.comwrote: Dear Mandera, Thanks for raising your concerns. Hi Caleb, Thanks for the information. I'll wait for the report from the Committee. However, in view of the fact that we keep on getting new members to the net every now and then, it might be good if you could clarify the difference, if any, between this (Investment Club pay) and the earlier issue of membership fee for the WNN. I suppose the two are different and go to different accounts, right?
