Re: [WestNileNet] Science Cafe Birth of West Nile Foundation Investment Club

2011-01-25 Thread Christine Munduru
Dear Mandera,
Thanks for raising your concerns. Nobody had ever asked the direction to
Naalya so we took it for granted that those who are interested know the
place. Next time when Richard is advertising I think he will take this into
account.

As Richard has said we shall see how best to share the recordings but the
biggest challenge now is lack of website for the science cafe which could
make it easier for others to access these things but slowly we are making
progress. Also appreciate the fact that these are voluntary ventures for
which one has to spare time out of jobs, so it can be a challenge at times
in wanting to do these things. Just like many people are not able to attend
due to their busy schedules, the same happens to the organizers too because
they have to work to put food on their plate while taking time to give back
to community. But good concerns raised.

   Ladies and Gentlemen,

As you are absolutely aware, one of our objectives as stated in our
memorandum and articles of association is to venture into a collective
investment scheme. The same is also reflected in our strategic Plan. Good
news, Yesterday, during the science cafe under the tutelage of our able
sister Christine Munduru, Our own investment expert Denis Aliga together
with our ebullient elder Geoffrey Onegi Obel who is the God father of
Capital Markets in Uganda made a breath taking presentation on collective
investment schemes. Members then resolved to move forward and as a result
the Committee on the WNFIC was formed. The members of the committee are the
 following:
 1. Chairperson Richard Okuti Borao
 2. Vice Chairperson Adiga Jimmy
 3. members Alemi Kenyi William, Akille Igu Rocks, Adukule Winnie, Azabo
Francis, Abati Nickson. Azabo Francis is the treasurer, meanwhile Denis
Aliga is the Investment advisor and Caleb Alaka is an ex-officio by virtue
of his position as the President. Members also agreed that the committee
formulates its TOR, and members are urged to contribute a minimum of 100,000
per each three months to the scheme, the funds will be managed by a fund
manager registered and approved by the capital markets authority.

2011-01-25 Thread Christine Munduru
Dear members, I like the advice from Denis that 100,000= quarterly should be
a starting point depending on how it moves, adjustments will be made.we pay
this for one quarter and see how it moves then we contribute the second
quarter etc. You know, we have not started but we are discussing too much
ahead which would be good but at times those are the small things which make
us fail. Some people are already talking of having more shares etc, this
would not be bad but my suggestion would be to first take off with the
amount which looks little for others and yet may not be easy for others to
get. I would suggest that we start small and move slowly but surely
otherwise we shall fail to take off. I tend to think that this expert advice
from Denis was not without a reason.

Thanks

Distinguished Members of the West Nile Forum,

My apologies that I could not attend the Science Cafe of 23/01/2011, I was for
the burial of the Late Mzee Semi Oguda at Anyavu - Logiri.

I'm grateful that a decision was taken to set up WNFIC and indeed asking them
to draft their TOR is not way off. We all know that in most cases when
candidates are being vetted for a job they are normally asked a prominent
question, what new things do you think you will contribute to an
organisation? In a way they are actually being asked to draft their TOR to see
if it matches with the expectations of the hiring entity. Definitely we shall
at an appropriate time review the TOR suggested by the WNFIC.

Nonetheless we need the constitution and other instruments of good governance
to stremline some of the important decisions we have taken.

I think let's move on.

 Dear President Westnile Foundation,
I applaud you and everyone who attended the Science Cafe
 upon this new
initiative. However i am also concerned that you could
 reach such an
important decision that fast by simply electing into
 office persons, asking them
to develop their TORs, without putting in place the
 necessary constitution,
especially on things concerning MONEY. I for one would have
 loved the Cafe
meeting to elect persons to draft a concept note
 and a consititution to guide
this investment initiative and then share it on this forum
 before finalizing
this process. I have never known that you can hire a
 person, even if voluntarily
and ask them to develop their own TOR and off you retire
 home happy. It is a
shame that members who participated in this exercise didn't
 see any problem with
such an arrangement. Please, I AM NOT IN ANY WAY
 QUESTIONING THE INTEGRITY OF
THE PEOPLE YOU ELECTED TO MANAGE AFFAIRS OF THE WNFIC, i
 think they are a
formidable team. However there are so many loose ends to
 such a brilliant
initiative, i hope our own highly knoweledgeable investment
 advisors gave you
the whole picture and not just stopped at how to use your
 pool of money to make
more money. For example, through a proper constitution
 (whatever you want to
call it), you would know what to do with one's
 entitlement God forbid if one
member of the WNFIC passes on.

For now let me stop here,

 over to you WNF

 Dear friends,
Less than six months ago, KK bus killed 21 people and left
 more injured with
 severe injuries.
Now Gaga bus has killed 17 more. A month ago 14 people died
 in Metu in
 another accident.
In 2010, there more accidents where passengers were
 seriously injured
including more deaths. When will these reckless killings
 stop?

Ladies and gentlemen, if buses or lorries kill over 100
 people per year, do
we really see a problem?  What can we do as a community to
 control the rate
 of these accidents?
As consumers, if we do nothing, these accidents will only
 continue year
 after year.

I think there is serious need to dialogue with bus
 operators. Although they
are providing a service to the public, on the other hand,
 they must ensure
 high standard of public safety.
A lot of sources of accidents coulld be avoided:

   - Over speeding
   - Drinking Driving
   -  Lack of training and regard for public safety
   - Illegal driving without proper licensing
   - Reckless and defensive driving

I think there is urgent need to address these

2. About the venue for the Science Cafe -- if it does not infringe on the

I must appreciate the fact that this time members have some video recording of

documentation purposes, recording these events are useful.

Thanks for all your efforts.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As you are absolutely aware, one of our objectives as stated in our memorandum
and articles of association is to venture into a collective investment scheme.
The same is also reflected in our strategic Plan. Good news, Yesterday, during

position as the President. Members also agreed that the committee formulates
its TOR, and members are urged to contribute a minimum of 100,000 per each
three months to the scheme, the funds will be managed by a fund manager
registered and approved by the capital markets authority.

You and the likes of JohnAJackson have been so inspirational to most people not
only on this net and the Foundation but also for your distinguished leadership
roles at the different spheres of life. Thanks for this guidance. Indeed the
WNFIC will be professionally managed. The Committee can draft the Terms of
Reference, Members will have to debate the same and make additions and
subtractions. A professional Fund manager regulated by the Regulatory Body
which I think in this case is the Capital Markets Authority will be picked by
members. We shall decide on what we want our funds to do of course in
consultation with the Fund Manager and our Investment Advisors like our own
Denis Aliga, Judy Obitre Gama and Geof Onegi Obel. Imagine if 400 members
contribute 100,000/= say per month for two or three years, can we not begin a
West Nile Bank of Commerce...

The following members of the committee should get in touch either by phone or

Aggrey Adrale

 Dear President Westnile Foundation,
I applaud you and everyone who attended the Science Cafe
 upon this new
initiative. However i am also concerned that you could
 reach such an
important decision that fast by simply electing into
 office persons, asking them
to develop their TORs, without putting in place the
 necessary constitution,
especially on things concerning MONEY. I for one would have
 loved the Cafe
meeting to elect persons to draft a concept note
 and a consititution to guide
this investment initiative and then share it on this forum
 before finalizing
this process. I have never known that you can hire a
 person, even if voluntarily
and ask them to develop their own TOR and off you retire
 home happy. It is a
shame that members who participated in this exercise didn't
 see any problem with
such an arrangement. Please, I AM NOT IN ANY WAY
 QUESTIONING THE INTEGRITY OF
THE PEOPLE YOU ELECTED TO MANAGE AFFAIRS OF THE WNFIC, i
 think they are a
formidable team. However there are so many loose ends to
 such a brilliant
initiative, i hope our own highly knoweledgeable investment
 advisors gave you
the whole picture and not just stopped at how to use your
 pool of money to make
more money. For example, through a proper constitution
 (whatever you want to
call it), you would know what to do with one's
 entitlement God forbid if one
member of the WNFIC passes on.

For now let me stop here,

 over to you WNF

Wendy,

Thanks for raising this issue. For the record, I was neither the Chairperson,
nor the Vice or even the treasurer. I was not a signatory to that account. I
also raised the same issue during the Science Cafe at the Nalya meeting. I was
not a signatory to the account and I was not in charge of the money. I also
want my contribution. That initiative had several flows. We did not have a fund
manager, neither where we educated about collective Investment Funds. We kept
idle money which I understand other members ended up borrowing. I do not know
the borrowers and I do not know whether borrowed funds where refunded. I did
not borrow any money from that fund.  Avutia was the treasurer. I think we
shall cause a meeting of all the contributors of the Nile Initiative for a
meeting. That time, we also did not have the Anti Corruption Court to Charge any
person who embezzles public funds.  But this new initiative is under a frame
work of an organization which is Registered. The fund will be run by a
professional fund manager registered and regulated by the Capital Markets
Authority. I believe it will also be insured. For me I will try a short at it
when the necessary guidelines are adopted by the Forum.

Well said Caleb,

However what happened to the savings we made towards the
West Nile Initiative around 2004. I remember I was if not the only lady, then
one of the few who put in some dimes.
I have tried to follow up with Dick (Treasurer then) , Eng. Okuni, Droma etc

2011-01-25 Thread Caleb Alaka
Wendy,

Thanks for raising this issue. For the record, I was
neither the Chairperson, nor the Vice or even the treasurer. I was not a
signatory to that account. I also raised the same issue during the
Science Cafe at the Nalya meeting. I was not a signatory to the account
and I was not in charge of the money. I also want my contribution. That
initiative had several flows. We did not have a fund manager, neither
where we educated about collective Investment Funds. We kept idle money
which I understand other members ended up borrowing. I do not know the
borrowers and I do not know whether borrowed funds where refunded. I did
not borrow any money from that fund.  Avutia was the treasurer. I think
we shall cause a meeting of all the contributors of the Nile Initiative
for a meeting. That time, we also did not have the Anti Corruption
Court to Charge any
person who embezzles public funds.  But this new initiative is under a
frame work of an organization which is Registered. The fund will be run
by a professional fund manager registered and regulated by the Capital Markets
Authority. I believe it will also be insured. For me I will try a short at it
when the necessary guidelines are adopted by the Forum.

Distinguished Members of the West Nile Forum,

My apologies that I could not attend the Science Cafe of 23/01/2011, I was
for the burial of the Late Mzee Semi Oguda at Anyavu - Logiri.

I'm grateful that a decision was taken to set up WNFIC and indeed asking
them to draft their TOR is not way off. We all know that in most cases when
candidates are being vetted for a job they are normally asked a prominent
question, what new things do you think you will contribute to an
organisation? In a way they are actually being asked to draft their TOR to
see if it matches with the expectations of the hiring entity. Definitely we
shall at an appropriate time review the TOR suggested by the WNFIC.

Nonetheless we need the constitution and other instruments of good
governance to stremline some of the important decisions we have taken.

 I think let's move on.

 Dear President Westnile Foundation,
I applaud you and everyone who attended the Science Cafe
 upon this new
initiative. However i am also concerned that you could
 reach such an
important decision that fast by simply electing into
 office persons, asking them
to develop their TORs, without putting in place the
 necessary constitution,
especially on things concerning MONEY. I for one would have
 loved the Cafe
meeting to elect persons to draft a concept note
 and a consititution to guide
this investment initiative and then share it on this forum
 before finalizing
this process. I have never known that you can hire a
 person, even if voluntarily
and ask them to develop their own TOR and off you retire
 home happy. It is a
shame that members who participated in this exercise didn't
 see any problem with
such an arrangement. Please, I AM NOT IN ANY WAY
 QUESTIONING THE INTEGRITY OF
THE PEOPLE YOU ELECTED TO MANAGE AFFAIRS OF THE WNFIC, i
 think they are a
formidable team. However there are so many loose ends to
 such a brilliant
initiative, i hope our own highly knoweledgeable investment
 advisors gave you
the whole picture and not just stopped at how to use your
 pool of money to make
more money. For example, through a proper constitution
 (whatever you want to
call it), you would know what to do with one's
 entitlement God forbid if one
member of the WNFIC passes on.

For now let me stop here,

 over to you WNF

Hi Christine,

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the efforts being made by those who
make time to contribute to the community. I do recognize the time it takes
to edit recordings since I also try it sometimes at an amateur level. On the
issue of a website for the Cafe, I guess with the hordes of options, the
progress you are hinting on should be close to its end. All the best of
success for the community.

I also look forward to the directions (in my case, for public transport) to

As Richard has said we shall see how best to share the recordings but the
biggest challenge now is lack of website for the science cafe which could
make it easier for others to access these things but slowly we are making
progress. Also appreciate the fact that these are voluntary ventures for
which one has to spare time out of jobs, so it can be a challenge at times
in wanting to do these things. Just like many people are not able to attend
due to their busy schedules, the same happens to the organizers too because
they have to work to put food on their plate while taking time to give back
to community. But good concerns raised.

 Hi All,

I have browsed the ideas shared on this net on the Investment Club. Since I
am among those who missed the Science Cafe presentation, I have two requests
to make. I suppose the first one is part of the report. All the same let me
 pre-empt it.

 1. *About the quarterly payment*: Does it go on forever or is there a time
period e.g 2 years, etc when one pays this 100,000/= quarterly? What happens
when one defaults payment in one or two quarters?

 2. *About the venue for the Science Cafe* -- if it does not infringe on
the privacy and security of our hosting brother, may I request that a
how-to-get-there direction is posted for those who are not familiar with
K'la or Naalya for that matter? I might not be the only one in Jerusalem who
does not know the place. It would be nice if you could kindly provide
options for those of us who use public means, including boda-bodas and those
 who use their own vehicles.

I must appreciate the fact that this time members have some video recording
of the presentation. I remember requesting this towards the beginning of
these Cafe presentations. No one even commended on it. I still think for
documentation purposes, recording these events are useful.

 Thanks for all your efforts.

 Maandera
