The general workaround has been to upload copies of the images locally, usually using a bot[1], which is hackish and needs a better implementation. With the implementation of GlobalUsage, it should be possible to create a local upload blacklist at Commons, similar to the bad image list or spam blacklist. This upload blacklist would be in a format like: * enwiki|Main Page When a non-admin tries to upload an image on Commons that matches by title and wiki to a globalimagelinks entry and that matches to an entry at this Commons upload blacklist, the upload would be disallowed for non-admins. Assuming that the globalimagelinks table updates quickly enough, this should make the current bots and manual updates[2] unnecessary. I tried, for instance, inserting tags and transcluding them through templates. I see no record of any proposal to use this extension on Wikimedia projects, but it seems that if it were installed, we could pretty easily implement the desired functionality by putting attribute tags within existing templates that categorize pages by quality/importance/whatever. We now require PHP5, which *does* have exceptions, although I'm not entirely sure that they're entirely suitable for all the uses. The API simply returns 'badtoken' to all requests. If the section names in the toolbar don't all fit on one line, the ones that wrap around overflow off the background and float on top of the text in the input area. The same is true for a section with buttons, if the buttons don't all fit on one line. To see it in action, go to el.wiktionary.org to edit a page; select 'Τοπικά' which has plenty of buttons, then shrink the window. That is good but it could be better if it could use autoblock when blocking the username in question (with account creation blocked, email blocked, autoblock enabled, wpHideUser enabled and talk page editing blocked). Sometimes vandals creates lots of libelous accounts in one wiki until you can checkuser it and block its IP address/range to stop the vandalism spree; and this is happening often disgracefully. Until bug 17929 gets fixed, this will be a very good fix.
