This changes how internal links are interpreted by parser, but i can't imagine
anyone is relying on the previous behaviour.

Trial at http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:NewMessages (and other
translatewiki pages) on 2010-12-24, 14:00
It had worked last time (few weeks before). I'm using Opera 11.00.

I wanted to answer a message by clicking on the Antworten-Button (answer),
but the only thing to happen was that all shown threads collapsed. Sometimes (I
haven't worked out when, may be depending on the thread title) even the
edit-textarea is shown, but the load-picture does not disappear.

The browsers error console shows follwing when clicking on the button:
 Inline script thread
Uncaught exception: ReferenceError: Undefined variable: hookEvent
Error thrown at line 182, column 0 in
 http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:NewMessages:
 hookEvent( 'load', scrollEditBox );
I couldn't found that piece of code anywhere in the js-sources, but I'm quite
sure this is the blocker.

Before I fixed another bug I found in the local common.js
(http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?diff=prevoldid=2528881), but I think they
have no bearing on each other.

Thank you for fixing Bug 26266.
One indeed can now distinguish redirects on AllPages finally...
(But only if one has good eyes, see the above URL.)
However for text browser accessibility, one still needs an HTML tag.
(Just like you implement strong class=mw-specialpagerestricted as a paired
CSS and HTML solution.)
So I propose DEL to be added to the Bug 26266 fixes. Thanks.

In Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b8) Gecko/20101219 Firefox/4.0b8
Iceweasel/4.0b8 the slanted text is minimally visually detectible.

In Midori 0.2.7 GTK+ 2.20.1, WebKitGTK+ 1.2.3 there is no difference to the two
fonts.

I'm not saying that we should chase down each browser's peculiarities, I'm just
saying adding an additional DEL would fix it for even text browsers too.

CR groups revisions into 'trees' based on the commit summary: the revision is
assumed to be a follow-up to any revisions named in the summary, and follow-up
revisions are listed below the diff on the original commit. But users can make
typos, forget to mention the previous commit, or otherwise fail to build a
proper tree. And in fact you can't really *see* the full tree structure
anywhere, only the immediate parent/child relations.

It would be preferable if the full tree structure for at least a couple of
levels either side was visible below the diff, and that there was a way to edit
the structure, either in-place or via a separate page.

[Bug 26417] New: Sidebar is difficult to customize for the average user

2010-12-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26417

Summary: Sidebar is difficult to customize for the average user
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: theevilipaddr...@hotmail.de

From my personal experience, I have noticed that it's often not possible for
some regular user not that experienced with MediaWiki to really customize the
sidebar to their wishes. By default, the syntax consists of headings that are
MediaWiki message keys and if they don't exist, they're used as plain text. The
lists then continue with link-similar syntax (just without the brackets) where
one is a MediaWiki message with the page name and the other a MediaWiki message
with the link text. If some of the message keys don't exist, then the plain
text is used as link anchor or link title. If you want to set a tooltip or
accesskey for the links, then you're required to create the tooltip-* or
accesskey-* messages. The left part of the pipe will also be used as HTML id
attribute. In the end, some capitalized things like SEARCH, TOOLBOX and
LANGUAGES come, that are defined by the MediaWiki software. (At least, that's
how I understood it, correct me if I'm wrong)

Whereas this probably works for power users or wikis like en.wikipedia where
there are definitely people who get it how it works, I think that this is too
complex for the casual user, especially considering that there seems to be no
documentation for it. What I would have in mind as a solution would be a GUI,
probably on something like Special:Sidebar (of course only accessible for
admins), where there are input fields where you write the values for link
anchor, link text, tooltip, accesskey and checkboxes to use a MediaWiki message
instead of plain text, so that wikis like Commons can still have localizable
sidebars and for backwards compability with older versions.

[Bug 26415] add DEL to AllPages redirects

(In reply to comment #4)
By the way, I see bugzilla uses a del type style for the above closed bug.

The fact that bugzilla is arguably wrong doesn't mean we should follow them in
being unquestionably wrong. A redirect is a perfectly valid page which happens
to have a special property; it is not deleted therefore it should not be
marked as deleted (arguably, the del tag would be more appropriate for
redlinks). You've basically decided that you want the redirects to stand out
in some fashion, and are now cherry-picking the tag that you think will stand
out the most without consideration for what that emphasis is supposed to
*mean*. If adding italics is not a visible change for the given font or
browser, that is a problem with that font or browser, not for us.

 (In reply to comment #13)
Adding 'firstmention' or some similar ID to the first usage of the self-link
wouldn't be a terrible idea in and of itself, nor would it necessarily be
  hard
  to do

Sounds like cruft IMO. We have too many classes/id's already, we shouldn't
just add a new one every time one guy wants it for some narrow purpose (no
 offense intended to anyone).

I agree, it is cruft. We don't need yet another class/ID tacked on because one
person asks for it. Without more voices asking and a compelling use case, I
don't see it happening.

(In reply to comment #19)
Nobody is now suggesting changing strong - span.

Since the second request is no longer valid either, I'm going to WONTFIX.

It's more of a tracking thing than a bug.

My problem with PHPUnit isn't with globals, but because it _doesn't work_. I've
worked for countless hours trying to get the PEAR packages working, configuring
me setup to use the proper include path, and all sorts of other hacks, and none
of them have worked. lime, on the other hand, is native PHP code, so no more
PEAR, and it's rediculously easy to use. But that's just me.

Even though sf/zf/cake may be hated around here, much of the stuff they make is
quite good. This is a feature I'd like to see far more than sfFinder, which was
reverted.

If you need help getting PHPUnit working, ask in IRC. I'll be there Monday,
Dec 27 as hexmode. Helpful information would be your OS and PHP version. I
apologize for the doubting the statement it _doesn't work_ but several people
have gotten it to work and we do depend on it daily.

That said, I think part of the resistance to other frameworks (I personally
don't hate them and have found cake, for example, useful for some of my
projects) is that MediaWiki is an almost 10-year-old framework in its own right
even though it does not sell itself as one.

Now back to the previously scheduled bug...

But this isn't a bug, it is your problem (essentially your words) that you
need help solving. Instead of solving the problem that you're having with
PHPUnit, you propose that we use Symfony's testing framework which
(hypothetically) fixes a problem. You haven't verified (at least to my

For what its worth, we're already using PHPUnderControl's PHPUnit integration.
How does lime work with that?

I hate to say it, but this sounds very much like WONTFIX.

But this isn't a bug, it is your problem (essentially your words) that you
 need help solving.

My problem isn't why ^demon and I are working on this, but it does provide an
example of why PHPUnit isn't always the best solution.

You haven't verified (at least to my
knowledge) that the problem ^demon describes is, in fact, non-existent in
 lime.

lime works in the global scope. Problem solved.

For what its worth, we're already using PHPUnderControl's PHPUnit
 integration.
How does lime work with that?

I don't know exactly how PHPUnderControl works, but I do know lime can output
in PHPUnit-compatible XML files.

I hate to say it, but this sounds very much like WONTFIX.
This isn't a bug. It's to keep track of progress on the project. It's mainly a
placeholder. Bugzilla isn't only for bugs.

Basically, what I'm trying to say here is that I'm thinking of one thing, and
you're thinking of another. You're thinking we're trying to replace it because
I can't get PHPUnit to work (which is false, I assure you). I'm thinking we're
trying to change certain tests (not all of them, I assure you) due to a global
scope issue. I would advise you to hold off on jumping to conclusions (and
WONTFIXing) until something comes out of this. ^demon's vacationing for a few
days, so I'm hoping that he can explain this situation better.

I'm not marking this WONTFIX because it is possible I'm wrong and lime is the
right solution to the global scope problem.

Which is why I've asked Trevor to weigh in. He has a bit more knowledge of
PHPUnit than I do. Maybe he will say that the problem with globals that ^demon
describes can't actually be fixed with PHPUnit. Maybe we will find that lime
can do something that PHPUnit should not.

[Bug 26409] Use lime for certain tests

--- Comment #9 from p858snake p858sn...@gmail.com 2010-12-24 22:27:14 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #6)
For what its worth, we're already using PHPUnderControl's PHPUnit
 integration.
How does lime work with that?
Yes the WMF is currently running a testing setup, but this bug is about
creating a testing setup that works with Mediawiki in general so what WMF is
running is quite frankly irrelevant, unless I've missed somewhere in this bug
where it is a request to setup it up at WMF. If users want to setup a testing
framework with tests and maintain, they can go ahead and do it

(In reply to comment #8)
I'm not marking this WONTFIX because it is possible I'm wrong and lime is the
right solution to the global scope problem.

Which is why I've asked Trevor to weigh in. He has a bit more knowledge of
PHPUnit than I do. Maybe he will say that the problem with globals that
 ^demon
describes can't actually be fixed with PHPUnit. Maybe we will find that lime
can do something that PHPUnit should not.

This bug is about creating a testing framework with lime and not disucssing a
issue with phpunit, so I kinda can't see why you be WONTFIXing it.

--- Comment #10 from Chad H. innocentkil...@gmail.com 2010-12-25 02:25:45 UTC
---
I have lots of thoughts on the issue.

I'm rather frustrated with PHPUnit, and I think lime might solve some of my
headaches (not claiming they'll solve yours)

Using lime is not the same as using Symfony or Zend, its a self-contained unit
test thingie. And its not nearly as bulky as Phpunit.

More after Christmas.

[Bug 26423] New: Margin around thumbnails is forced to be while

2010-12-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26423

Summary: Margin around thumbnails is forced to be while
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.18-svn
  Platform: All
   URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Sandboxold
id=371897
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: krinklem...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: krinklem...@gmail.com

The margin around floated thumbnails is forced to be while.
Especially when used in an element with toccolours or when used in the
{{Information}} template on Commons, this gives an ugly edge.

See also:
http://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Sandboxoldid=371897

Assigning to myself, I've fixed this on a few local wikis and if I see no
collisions, I'll put it in core as this is a general MediaWiki bug and not
specific to Wikimedia.

OK, how about I?
(In reply to comment #5)
consideration for what that emphasis is supposed to mean
OK, as Ilmari Karonen said in Bug 26266#c1 , use I not EM.

If adding italics is not a visible change for the given font or
browser, that is a problem with that font or browser, not for us.

OK, I'll accept italics. Now please send Is, as in fact it is much harder for
a WikiSysop to customize that in than it is to just change Mediawiki:Common.css
.

Proof I is good:

Bug #671 Comment #27 :

left alone, as HTML 5 redefines them more narrowly and they will continue to be

Also note Bug 369, where em was changed to i.

That was done because em has the semantic meaning of emphasizing part of a
sentence which is not always the intention when using '' in Wikitext. There
could be any reason for it, thus it has been changed for the neutral
(semantically meaningless) I

Making them I instead of span will have:
* No visual change
* No change in pronouncement by text readers
* No difference in semantic meaning

All it does it changing markup for no reason.

It also has a downside, since it will cause problems for wiki sysops that have
copied older CSS from other wikis that defined the style like
span.allpagesredirect { font-style:italic; color:green; }.

They are italized already with CSS, hence bug 26266 is fixed.
Marking as WONTFIX.

[Bug 26421] Lack of Security Signature for donation page

(I'm just a random volunteer who saw this. I am not associated with the
fundraiser people in any way. Take what I say with a grain of salt)

It is very unlikely that anything is in danger. From the sounds of it the
unsecure part happened after the donation part (As otherwise cancelling would
have worked), so the donation was probably secure.

I'm filing this under central notice component, since although that isn't the
right place, i know the fundraiser people monitor that component, so hopefully
someone more knowledgeable than me will find it.
