 Something's borked about the code or config, I can't seem to view history or

Fatal error: Call to undefined method MediaWiki::getAction() in
/srv/org/wikimedia/prototype/extensions/InputBox/InputBox.hooks.php on line 55

Fixed by running svn up on the en-wp directory, apparently hadn't been done in
a long time. Also note that the d-en prototype runs off the REL1_17 branch, so
you might find that more useful.

 Since the same wording exists upstream at en.wp i assume that it was just a db
 copy or dump import of en.wp and that message was never changed.
That's exactly what happened, yes. Fixed:

[Bug 26498] New: allow LinksUpdate with API

For update all links from a page with the api it is necessary to get the full
revision and put it as edit back (nulledit).

But this is not possible for all users for full protected pages.

Is there a way, not using the restricted action=edit for update all links of a
page?

Maybe add a linksupdate param to action=purge.

Thanks.

[Bug 26499] New: Include size of the dump file in each dump file

2010-12-30 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26499

   Summary: Include size of the dump file in each dump file
   Product: XML Snapshots

OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General
AssignedTo: ar...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: hippietr...@yahoo.com
CC: tf...@wikimedia.org

Since dump files can be so huge it is common to process them while still
compressed. To enable progress reports when processing compressed dumps we need
to know the total size, which of course we can't know unless we decompress it.
It would be trivial to add a metadata field to say the root element which
states the uncompressed size of the dump file.

The easiest way would be to include it as a fixed length string, say 16
characters hexadecimal which would allow for 64-bits. When intially generating
the dump this field would be set to . After completion of
dump generation we now know how long it is and can go back and fill in this
field without altering the length of the dump.

Of course if we generate dump files directly to their compressed form then this
may not be possible.

Depending on how we generate the dumps we might know how many lines they have,
which would also be very useful for those of us processing them line by line.

The Author field is currently limited to 50 characters. Some names can be
longer than that. We should increase it to something longer; maybe 128? Or
something else that makes sense from an implementation point of view.

Note that this is about the Own work author field. For other works, it would
need to be even longer, since many people can be listed as authors.

Nowadays, Meta and Commons are defaultly in English for user who is not logged

The sites ignore the language setting of the browser. Nevertheless, that
setting reflects the user's preferences, besides forcing users to register for
changing the language is very annoying and senseless.

With both a few day old revision and the newest SVN r.79244, skin: Vector:

Going to user preferences, the pages (User profile, Appearance, Date and time,
Editing, etc.) appear correctly as tabs. However, clicking on any of these tabs
results in no action - the javascript functionality behind is not working.

It could be a problem in combination with jquery. In principle, jquery is being
loaded, we have Vector-extension running and the hideable menus on the left are
ok. However, we have code in Mediawiki:Common.js, which is unable to pick up
the jquery. Should the preferences-tab-click be implemented through jquery,
there may thus be a more generic jquery problem behind it.

Changing component to resource loader.

It appears as if having ?printable=yes does not supress the @media print in the

This is already fixed in trunk, because ResourceLoader flips all CSS in RTL
languages. Committed and deployed a live hack in r79244 to fix this temporarily
as ResourceLoader isn't live yet.

Language settings of the browser are often incorrect. It can sometimes be
confusing to the user if they are in use, as most users don't know how to
change the language settings.

However, it would be nice if at the very least ?uselang= parameters were
persitent (I think thats another bug)

[Bug 26508] New: Content Security Policy (CSP)

2010-12-30 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26508

   Summary: Content Security Policy (CSP)
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: wikimedia-deployment
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Javascript
AssignedTo: d...@ucsc.edu
ReportedBy: seat...@gmail.com
CC: tpars...@wikimedia.org

Coming in Firefox 4

Content Security Policy (CSP) is an added layer of security that helps to
detect and mitigate certain types of attacks, including Cross Site Scripting
(XSS) and data injection attacks.

Enabling CSP is as easy as configuring your web server to return the
X-Content-Security-Policy HTTP header.

Example of change required:

* User Agents MUST block:
o The contents of internal script nodes
o javascript: URIs, e.g. a href=javascript:bad_stuff() (unless enabled by
policy)
o Event-handling attributes, e.g. a onclick=bad_stuff()

* User Agents MUST NOT block:
o Scripts imported from external files whose sources are allowed by the
protected document's policy AND are served with a Content-Type of
application/javascript or application/json.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Introducing_Content_Security_Policy
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/CSP/Specification
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/CSP/Specification#Base_Restrictions

Jumping on the band wagon:

phpMyAdmin
http://www.phpmyadmin.net/documentation/changelog.php
+ [core] Include Content Security Policy HTTP headers.

MantisBT bugtracking
http://www.mantisbt.org/blog/?p=119
As Firefox 4 has been pushed back to early 2011 we have more time to finish
off the implementation of X-Content-Security-Policy within MantisBT.

Maybe the browser language settings are sometimes incorrect, nevertheless the
present default setting is incorrect almost always, displaying everything in
English to everybody. Most users also don't know how to change the language
settings in Meta or Commons (it is much easier to get to know own browser once
than particular settings of every web visited).

I suppose the browser setting can be set defaultly to English (often
incorrect), or to the system or browser localisation language (probably nobody
uses them in an unintelligible version). All the possibilities are better than
default English always.

Persistent ?uselang= would be also useful.

 Although of course the real issue is that some modules aren't properly wrapped
 in (function($) { ... })(jQuery); , which should really be done for *all*
 modules by the resource loader itself. Repurposing this bug for that.
This was done in r79246. I also fixed some JS errors on the preferences page in
r79245.

[Bug 16822] Provide SSL/HTTPS interface to upload.wikimedia.org and use it for SSL-served pages

 (In reply to comment #8)
  It’s more than “moderately annoying” [0]. You said it yourself: the images
  could be replaced with something “malicious”. It’s more obvious how this
  could
  be a security risk when you consider that images could be used by gadgets or
  user scripts.

 The images are cross-origin, so they can do basically nothing different from
 if
 they were on some totally different site in a different tab. Gadgets and user
 scripts cannot (AFAIK) access the contents of upload.wikimedia.org files at
 all. Pretty much anything an attacker could do by MITMing these images, they
 could do by MITMing some unrelated site you have open, assuming you have at
 least one unsecured connection open. So that point is, yes, at most
 moderately
 annoying.

 The issues of replacing the scripts, and snooping on the images to figure out
 what pages you're viewing, are the significant ones.

True, the images are cross-origin, and cannot in themselves do anything. True,
gadgets and user scripts cannot access the contents of upload.wikimedia.org
files.

However, gadgets and user scripts can cause these files to be displayed on the
current page. Once this is done, the images have meaning to the person viewing
the page, who may make important decisions based on them. The EFF gives a nice
example:

“Nor is it safe to reference images via HTTP: What if the attacker swapped the
Save Message and Delete Message icons in a webmail app?”

So this issue is potentially more than moderately annoying: in fact, it is just
as important as the other issues, in general. (However, for most users on the
Wikimedia sites, it is probably far less important than the other issues.)

 The logos are being loaded via http://upload.wikimedia.org using CSS such as

 div class=portlet id=p-logo
 a style=background-image:
 url(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bc/Wiki.png);
 href=/wikipedia/en/wiki/Main_Page title=Visit the main page [z]
 accesskey=z/a
 /div

They are? Not via a CSS stylesheet?

 When accessed via the secure.wikimedia.org site with Internet Explorer 7, it
 results in a blocking warning This page contains both secure and nonsecure
 items, which needs to be turned off.

 Turning off this warning involves going to Tools - Internet Options -
 Security tab - Internet zone - Custom level - Miscellaneous section -
 Display mixed content = Enabled.

I don’t understand what you mean by a “blocking warning” needing “to be turned
off”. AFAIK, Internet Explorer 7 and higher also provide a Prompt option,
allowing you to keep the warning and still view the items loaded over a
non-secure connection.

[Bug 26509] New: Please add a new javascript global variable

Hello,

I'm not sure this is the correct place to post it. If not, feel free to change
it.

I'd like you to add a new javascript global variable, like wgUserGroups or
wgGlobalGroups. There is a list here
(http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Interface/JavaScript).
I'd like this global variable to contain the wiki-sets (i.e. Global sysop
wiki or Global bot wiki) the wiki belongs to.

I need this change in order to write a JS tool that should make stewards' life
easier by hiding (or changing the color of) the sysop buttons on non-GS wikis.
Stewards should not make deletions (except emergencies) on non-GS-wikis, so
they'll be able to know whether they can or not just by going on the page.

Thanks a lot by advance.

Yes, I understand that you don't want to do such a change for a minority.

But your commentary has given me an idea : I can also use wgDBname variable
and test if this variable belongs to a pre-defined array. The inconvenience is
that the list should be changed everytime the GS wiki list changes.

I'll do that so. Thanks nevertheless.

[Bug 26512] New: Suggest: MouseOver link definitions, right-click functionality

2010-12-30 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26512

   Summary: Suggest: MouseOver link definitions, right-click
functionality
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: wikimedia-deployment
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: j...@rogers.com

Background:
Wikimedia page prose contains many hyperlinks. Google.com recently added page
previews when MouseOver-ing search results. Other websites provide popups on
selected words, generally with a commercial theme. Wikimedia pages can contain
several terms in the same sentence that may all require lookup.

e.g. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_disease
H00-H06 Disorders of eyelid, lacrimal system and orbit
* (H00.0) Hordeolum (stye or sty) — a bacterial infection of sebaceous
glands of eyelashes.
* (H00.1) Chalazion — a cyst in the eyelid (usually upper eyelid)
* (H01.0) Blepharitis — inflammation of eyelids and eyelashes;
characterized by white flaky skin near the eyelashes
* (H02.0) Entropion and trichiasis
* (H02.1) Ectropion
* (H02.2) Lagophthalmos
* (H02.3) Blepharochalasis
* (H02.4) Ptosis
* (H02.6) Xanthelasma of eyelid

H00.0 to H02.6 are all links. The first three are explicitly defined, perhaps
giving the user enough info to not have to navigate away from the current page.
 To understand the last 6 items requires clicking the links.

Suggestion: Page links to show popup meanings or definitions of the source
word(s) when user's mouse hovers over them. The information displayed would be
a definition field that the author populates when s/he edits the page. This
allows for more fluid intake of information, since page flipping to understand
each phrase would be reduced.

Suggestion: Create a Wikipedia addon giving user context-sensitive right-click
capabilities, such as the one described above. Another example: Copy or Save
high resolution image might be offered when over a right hand side thumbnail.
The higher resolution image that resides on a separate page would then be
copied onto the clipboard or saved. Another time saver: select text,
right-click and have option to Search Wikipedia for textselected.

Thanks for taking the time to review this message.

[Bug 3665] Auto-detect interface language for anonymous users

2010-12-30 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3665

--- Comment #12 from dohnp...@gmail.com 2010-12-30 19:46:09 UTC ---
It's very dissapointing that nothing was improved anent this bug during six
years.

Many people in my surrounding really hate English and would never contribute to
a project that appears totally in this language, without an easy and fast way
to switch it.

Maybe the browser language settings are sometimes incorrect. Nevertheless, the
present default setting is incorrect almost always, displaying everything in
English to everyone. Most users also don't know how to change the language
settings in Meta or Commons: it is much easier to get to know own browser once
than particular settings of every web visited.

I suppose the browser setting can be set defaultly to English (often
incorrect), or to the system or browser localisation language (probably nobody
uses them in an unintelligible version, so there's no problem). All the
possibilities are better than default English always.

With the 'Vector' skin, the main-ltr.css CSS is missing from the head when
using action=parseprop=headhtml.

e.g.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=parseprop=headhtml
Includes all CSS but main-ltr.css

It seems it is because initPage() is not called before headElement() in
ApiParse.php, but not sure.

Consider this:

:'''Bold in wikimarkup with b(embedded bold)/b in HTML'''
:'''Bold in wikimarkup with nbsp;b(embedded bold preceded by amp;nbsp;)/b

The first line will display correctly in all bold, the second will *close* the
embedded bold whenever there is a nbsp anywhere before it. This happens with
all HTML tags.

One wonders 'why have they placed the style ouside the HTML tag
instead of inside?'

As can be seen from this little experiment (done on Firefox)
span style=font-weight:normalstrongstyle outside/strong/span
strongspan style=font-weight:normalstyle inside/span/strong
your doing that leaves the WikiSysop with no way to override it, if he
so pleases, via MediaWiki:Common.css .

At the bottom of the page one finds
strong class=mw-specialpagerestrictedRestricted special pages./strong
which is also fine, as one can override the strong with stylesheets,
accoding to my experiments.

So barring any other considerations that I am not aware of, please fix
it, and along with it, and other such places in the code where the
styles are on the outside.

I'm not sure this is a bug.

It appears that maybe you don't understand how style sheets work?

span strong { color: red; }
strong span { color: blue; }

Or in your first instance:

li.mw-specialpagerestricted strong a { color: red; }

I don't see a bug here.

 All of which can be provided by a wiki very easily in
 their own CSS. You are saying that we should be taking that flexibility
 *away*
 from wikis, and forcing them to have the redirects in italics whether they
 want
 them or not. That is not a progressive change.
But can't they just overpower it back in MediaWiki:Common.css as I have shown
in Bug 26519 Comment 6 ?

Odd, mw-specialpages-page occurs on languages/messages/MessagesKsh.php
but no other such language file. So maybe it should be removed from there just
for regularity.

And apparently in other code it only appears in combination with
mw-specialpagerestricted .

(So one thinks it may be a good candidate for removal from all of Mediawiki.
However there is one place mw-specialpagerestricted occurs without
mw-specialpages-page. So I don't know.)

at least one can differentiate Special Page vs. Special Pages.
They had differentiated the Chinese for a time, but now they are apparently
counting on a tooltip that one has to mouseover to see.
