https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26499 Summary: Include size of the dump file in each dump file Product: XML Snapshots Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: General AssignedTo: ar...@wikimedia.org ReportedBy: hippietr...@yahoo.com CC: tf...@wikimedia.org Since dump files can be so huge it is common to process them while still compressed. To enable progress reports when processing compressed dumps we need to know the total size, which of course we can't know unless we decompress it. It would be trivial to add a metadata field to say the root element which states the uncompressed size of the dump file. The easiest way would be to include it as a fixed length string, say 16 characters hexadecimal which would allow for 64-bits. When intially generating the dump this field would be set to . After completion of dump generation we now know how long it is and can go back and fill in this field without altering the length of the dump. Of course if we generate dump files directly to their compressed form then this may not be possible. Depending on how we generate the dumps we might know how many lines they have, which would also be very useful for those of us processing them line by line. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

[Bug 16822] Provide SSL/HTTPS interface to upload.wikimedia.org and use it for SSL-served pages
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16822 --- Comment #11 from Brian Jason Drake bri...@drakefamily.tk 2010-12-30 12:27:59 UTC --- (In reply to comment #10) (In reply to comment #8) It’s more than “moderately annoying” [0]. You said it yourself: the images could be replaced with something “malicious”. It’s more obvious how this could be a security risk when you consider that images could be used by gadgets or user scripts. The images are cross-origin, so they can do basically nothing different from if they were on some totally different site in a different tab. Gadgets and user scripts cannot (AFAIK) access the contents of upload.wikimedia.org files at all. Pretty much anything an attacker could do by MITMing these images, they could do by MITMing some unrelated site you have open, assuming you have at least one unsecured connection open. So that point is, yes, at most moderately annoying. The issues of replacing the scripts, and snooping on the images to figure out what pages you're viewing, are the significant ones. True, the images are cross-origin, and cannot in themselves do anything. True, gadgets and user scripts cannot access the contents of upload.wikimedia.org files. However, gadgets and user scripts can cause these files to be displayed on the current page. Once this is done, the images have meaning to the person viewing the page, who may make important decisions based on them. The EFF gives a nice example: “Nor is it safe to reference images via HTTP: What if the attacker swapped the Save Message and Delete Message icons in a webmail app?” So this issue is potentially more than moderately annoying: in fact, it is just as important as the other issues, in general. (However, for most users on the Wikimedia sites, it is probably far less important than the other issues.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

When accessed via the secure.wikimedia.org site with Internet Explorer 7, it results in a blocking warning This page contains both secure and nonsecure items, which needs to be turned off. Turning off this warning involves going to Tools - Internet Options - Security tab - Internet zone - Custom level - Miscellaneous section - Display mixed content = Enabled. I don’t understand what you mean by a “blocking warning” needing “to be turned off”. AFAIK, Internet Explorer 7 and higher also provide a Prompt option, allowing you to keep the warning and still view the items loaded over a non-secure connection. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

If not, feel free to change it. I'd like you to add a new javascript global variable, like wgUserGroups or wgGlobalGroups. There is a list here (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Interface/JavaScript). I'd like this global variable to contain the wiki-sets (i.e. Global sysop wiki or Global bot wiki) the wiki belongs to. I need this change in order to write a JS tool that should make stewards' life easier by hiding (or changing the color of) the sysop buttons on non-GS wikis. Stewards should not make deletions (except emergencies) on non-GS-wikis, so they'll be able to know whether they can or not just by going on the page. [Bug 26512] New: Suggest: MouseOver link definitions, right-click functionality
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26512 Summary: Suggest: MouseOver link definitions, right-click functionality Product: MediaWiki Version: wikimedia-deployment Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: General/Unknown AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: j...@rogers.com Background: Wikimedia page prose contains many hyperlinks. Google.com recently added page previews when MouseOver-ing search results. Other websites provide popups on selected words, generally with a commercial theme. Wikimedia pages can contain several terms in the same sentence that may all require lookup. e.g. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_disease H00-H06 Disorders of eyelid, lacrimal system and orbit * (H00.0) Hordeolum (stye or sty) — a bacterial infection of sebaceous glands of eyelashes. * (H00.1) Chalazion — a cyst in the eyelid (usually upper eyelid) * (H01.0) Blepharitis — inflammation of eyelids and eyelashes; characterized by white flaky skin near the eyelashes * (H02.0) Entropion and trichiasis * (H02.1) Ectropion * (H02.2) Lagophthalmos * (H02.3) Blepharochalasis * (H02.4) Ptosis * (H02.6) Xanthelasma of eyelid H00.0 to H02.6 are all links. The first three are explicitly defined, perhaps giving the user enough info to not have to navigate away from the current page. To understand the last 6 items requires clicking the links. Suggestion: Page links to show popup meanings or definitions of the source word(s) when user's mouse hovers over them. The information displayed would be a definition field that the author populates when s/he edits the page. This allows for more fluid intake of information, since page flipping to understand each phrase would be reduced. Suggestion: Create a Wikipedia addon giving user context-sensitive right-click capabilities, such as the one described above. Another example: Copy or Save high resolution image might be offered when over a right hand side thumbnail. The higher resolution image that resides on a separate page would then be copied onto the clipboard or saved. Another time saver: select text, right-click and have option to Search Wikipedia for textselected. Many people in my surrounding really hate English and would never contribute to a project that appears totally in this language, without an easy and fast way to switch it. Maybe the browser language settings are sometimes incorrect. Nevertheless, the present default setting is incorrect almost always, displaying everything in English to everyone. Most users also don't know how to change the language settings in Meta or Commons: it is much easier to get to know own browser once than particular settings of every web visited. I suppose the browser setting can be set defaultly to English (often incorrect), or to the system or browser localisation language (probably nobody uses them in an unintelligible version, so there's no problem). All the possibilities are better than default English always. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
