Random RSS feeds: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Subfader/RSS None works.

Error parsing XML for RSS
Error fetching URL: connect() timed out!
Error fetching URL: couldn't connect to host

It's not a site issue. It works with an older Extension:RSS version using
MagpieRSS.

I check the RSS Feeds on my server, and must admit, that
- the extension in version 1.8 does not work for all kind and flavours of RSS
Feeds
- your observations are correct
- comparing the rendering of your feed list on mediawiki.org and on my server,
it is apparent, that site issues (time-out settings, proxy) are minor part of
the issue, and that
- the extension still needs to be improved, especially in to avoid Error
parsing XML for RSS

I change the bug subject to include that.

We need to introduce an optional parameter, and a default value to limit the
number of characters. An implementation idea has been posted in 2010 on
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension_talk:RSS#How_to_modify_the_length_of_the_description.3F
and is partially copied here:

How to modify the length of the description?

Something like this:

preg_replace('/^(.{150}).{3,}(.{25})$/us', '$1 ... $2', $item['description']);

Play around with the numbers and you'll see. --Subfader 21:48, 5 March 2010
(UTC)

I changed rss.php a lot so I didn't check it, but it should work
like this: Replace

if ( $item['description'] ) {
$text = trim( iconv( $charset, $wgOutputEncoding, $item['description'] ) );

with

if ( $item['description'] ) {
$shortdesc = preg_replace('/^(.{150}).{3,}(.{25})$/us', '$1 ... $2',
$item['description']);
$text = trim( iconv( $charset, $wgOutputEncoding, $shortdesc ) );

This will shorten the description text to [150 chars ... 25 chars]. --Subfader

[Bug 30339] Implement Special:UnitTesting

2011-08-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30339

--- Comment #3 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2011-08-15 08:25:39 UTC ---
Implementation details:
* New Special:UnitTesting page (user scripts disabled, isListed returns false
depending on $wgEnableSpecialUnitTesting)
* Shows a list of frameworks, by default only qunit
* Special:UnitTesting/qunit outputs the QUnit base html and loads
testrunner (which loads jquery.qunit and the other stuff we need) + all test
suites by passing $wgUnitTestingQUnitSuites to OutputPage's addModules().

TBD:
* As can be seen in the patch in the comment above wgUnitTestingQUnitSuites in
DefaultSettings, adding stuff for extensions looks a little funky. The reason
is simple, we don't want all test suites to be registered unless
wgEnableSpecialUnitTesting is true (to avoid polluting the start up module with
a lot of crap and making it twice or three times as big). I also considered
adding a global variable just for these modules and calling register() myself
in the SpecialUnitTesting page, but that doesn't work either because load.php
doesn't know on what page we are, so they wouldn't be registered. Plus, that
would mess up or not work at all with caching since startup has (and should
have) only 1 cache. StartUp should never depend on user or page. So I attempted
to create a hook inside ResourceLoader-__construct() that is only ran if
wgEnableSpecialUnitTesting is true. And if it is register the modules and add
the array_keys of the modules to $wgUnitTestingQUnitSuites.

The problem is that didn't work because ResourceLoader-__construct() runs
AFTER SpecialUnitTesting-execute(), so when SpecialUnitTesting-execute() did
addModules( wgUnitTestingQUnitSuites ), nothing was added. That's why I work
around this by letting extensions add their array keys to
wgUnitTestingQUnitSuites in the global scope right away, and the registry
separately through the hook. If anybody has a better solution, I would love to
change it since I'm not liking this very much.

Problems:
* When I applied this patch and set wgEnableSpecialUnitTesting to true, and
visited Special:UnitTesting/qunit, I got :
Uncaught RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded
in my console and none of the test suites was loaded. As a result many other
modules are broken too. (such as Exception thrown by user.options: Cannot read
property 'options' of undefined).

I suspect $.inArray in resolve() inside mw.loader's scope is doing something
wrong.

Hi, my suggestion is for the case of filing a new bug for an extension
extension-name:

I suggest to automate the assignment of a default value for the URL field
(populate with http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:extension-name ),
which appears to be possible for at least bugs of extensions.

Why ? Because one can only file an extension big in bugzilla if the extension
is in the SVN repo, as far as I know.

Optional, once: the backlog of old extensions bugs with no URL could be
filled by a script.

No, this field is for links to related information, example: sites showing the
issues, upstream bug reports etc etc

Yep, but as long as there is nothing entered and the field is empty, the best
target is the extensions' page itself, and this is proposed: to fill in the
extension's page url unless the reporter expressly added a different url.

I disagree. The extension name is already listed in the component field, which
should correspond to a page in the extension namespace on MediaWiki.org for all
extensions. If people want to find out more information, they just need to
click on Component and look up the description for that specific component.

My understanding of the URL field is the same as p858snake's.

Somehow the inclusion of templates adds many unwanted spaces or pre that are
not defined in the template

I could not find where this error comes from, it's somehow a strange
interpretation of the Wiki Code

changing the state of tidy does not change anything

It's also in Vector. Look at the HTML source, not at the browser viewport.

Yes, but it is not styled and so there is no (visible) problem. So you can fix
this, by removing the emtpy div or by removing the stylesheet, or both.

[Bug 30381] dumpHtml crashes when certain extensions are enabled

Is this specific to dumpHTML or is it just due to running versions of
extensions that are icompatible with the PHP version you have present, and only
coming across pages triggering the failure when using the dump?

Don't forget to cut and paste those error messages!

What's log actions mean here? Log items save a description of what sort of

When a user is active in some wikis of WMF it is hard to get notice over new
message at a talk page in any wikis.

Getting the orange usermessage box for each wiki on the current visited wiki
can be very helpful to get attention to the wiki with the change at the user
talk.

Using the email function is slow, because you have to look at you email box in
a period.

Thanks.

Looks fine here, this is probably just your browser's or system's text
rendering system having a bug and picking the wrong glyphs for the Arabic text.

Presence of Esperanto accented chars in the screenshot confirms it shouldn't be
an encoding bug; the whole page should either come through or not.

[Bug 30384] Strange Parser behaviour when including templates

--- Comment #4 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org 2011-08-15 17:31:31 UTC

Thanks; your users will appreciate that as well.

It looks like your template:

http://www.wecowi.de/edit/Vorlage:Infobox_Person

has a lot of bits like this:

---
{{#if:{}|style=vertical-align:topWohnort:
{{#arraymap:{Wohnort}|/|x|Wohnort::x|,nbsp;}}
{{!-
{{#if:{}|style=vertical-align:topWahlheimat:
{{#arraymap:{Wahlheimat}|,|x|Wahlheimat::x|,nbsp;}}
{{!-
{{#if:{}|style=vertical-align:topAbstammung:
{{#arraymap:{Abstammung}|,|x|Abstammung::x}}
{{!-
---

If I'm not mistaken, that's going to leave a bunch of newlines, eg if none of
those params are there:

---

---

Those newline sequences are going to end up interpreted as 'oh you want some
extra lines between your paragraphs', I believe.

You might want to try removing the extra newlines outside of the if blocks, and
see if that helps.

While you're at it, could you make a page on mediawiki.org describing the 'page
content language' concept and interface, and talk it up on wikitech-l?

I can't find *any* instances of the phrase appearing in wikitech-l archives,
which makes me suspect that unless someone's been *explicitly following your
changes on trunk* they have no idea what's happening in this arena.

Thanks!

I'm going to go out on a limb and kill this actually; the preference these days
is for less magical stuff and should instead be more explicit. (Among other
things, using templates for this sort of thing avoids the problems of central
maintenance, surprise links, parser level interference, etc)

Editing-time and review-time link helpers are probably a better way to go than
more auto-linking.

Duping this specific bug to bug 26207.

Simple OAuth token setup for API authentication may be doable as an
extension, depending on how hard it is to plug things in appropriately.

Fine-grained permissions would probably need some explicit API support, and
might need some general rethinks (eg can I give an app permission to read pages
and upload files on my behalf, but not to block, unblock, delete pages, etc?).

importImages.php explicitly calls $image-recordUpload -- this method on File
is a stub, which is listed as being overridden in LocalFile BUT IS NOT in
1.19-svn.

There *is* a recordUpload2 method on LocalFile, but no RecordUpload.

I'm guessing somebody refactored things and didn't fix them all?

This template seems to be trying to reproduce the gallery tag hook.

Does it have specific features that are useful etc, or should it simply be
replaced with use of gallery?

What exactly does it need to know image width/height for to draw boxes?
Shouldn't it leave boxes to the style sheets or MediaWiki's own image box
rendering?

You can use action=paraminfo for this information.

In this example it is api.php?action=paraminfopagesetmodule=, which gives you

 parameters
param name=titles description=A list of titles to work on multi=
limit=50 lowlimit=50 highlimit=500 type=string /
param name=pageids description=A list of page IDs to work on
multi= limit=50 lowlimit=50 highlimit=500 type=integer /
param name=revids description=A list of revision IDs to work on
multi= limit=50 lowlimit=50 highlimit=500 type=integer /
 /parameters

You can see that revids = 50.

Having a continue for the rest is also an idea.

[Bug 30294] CSS @import should support relative urls on secure server

This is a problem due to the configuration.

You have the same problem with javascript, but when loading javascript you can
use $wgScript, which has the right value in case of the secure server. When
using $wgScript you avoid the hardcoded /w/index.php.

But in style sheets you cannot use $wgScript, you have no change to make a
different import statement for http/https with the current configuration of WMF
wikis. You can load the style sheets per javascript.

It is not a bug, because under https://secure.wikimedia.org/w/index.php are
nothing (that is the 404), because you find the content under
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/w/index.php.

You want an enhancement for the ResourceLoader: Supporting a simple syntax for
$wgScript in import statements of style sheets.

[Bug 25312] MD5 or SHA1 checksum in stub dumps

2011-08-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25312

--- Comment #11 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org 2011-08-15 19:41:49 UTC
---
(In reply to comment #3)
I don't see why #21860 is a blocker - if text is being read, calculating
checksums is cheap enough.
Storing all that in the database isn't free.

When creating a stub dump, we haven't read the text yet -- the job of fetching
and inserting the text is being deferred to a later process (textDumpPass)
which pulls the text either from a previous dump or from the text table /
external storage etc.

So at that point, only data within the 'page' and 'revision' tables, and
anything else that can be very cheaply fetched, is available.

A rev_sha1 field that's already been pre-filled out would be usable for
creating stub dumps; calculating from text after it's been read would only be
usable on the final dumps (or else a second equivalent pass).

Using a separate field for this also gives greater confidence that there was
not internal data corruption; if the sha1 is generated from the text that's
right next to it in the same file, there's no point -- the client could
calculate it as easily and reliably as the server could have, and in neither
case will it indicate if the data has been corrupted on the backend.

(In reply to comment #7)
SHA1 *might* make more sense than MD5, if only because it may help us in a
crazy future where we leverage tools associated with Git or other version
control systems (for example, Mercurial uses SHA1 as well). Not that there's
anything planned, but since the choice of hash is somewhat arbitrary
otherwise,
SHA1 might be slightly preferable.

I don't think there'd be much chance at integration here really; git's object
references are based on SHA-1 checksums, but of the entire object including a
header indicating type ('blob' for files) and size prepended.

--- Comment #3 from Bawolff bawolff...@gmail.com 2011-08-15 19:48:26 UTC ---
Changing component to the extension. I'm also lowering priority (I don't feel
high is appropriate for this bug ). And tagging i18n as its sort of an i18n
issue.

formatnum: also adds comma's/period's. For example in tr language
becomes 1.000 (periods are the thousands separator in tr).
Thus 1.000 would have very different meanings depending on if you assumed it
was a formatted number or a raw number. (I suppose we could just transform
digits and not separators, but that feels really ugly, and it'd still have to
be done carefully).

I don't feel this is a large issue because #expr is mostly used in templates,
and not encountered as much by the average user (although I could be wrong on
that), and thus am leaning towards thinking this should be a WONTFIX. Keep in
mind you can also do {{#expr:{{formatnum:{}|R}}*1}} in templates, which
will de-format the number so your users can use fa numerals properly

reza1615: Could you give examples of times when this makes life difficult on fa
(or other languages for that matter) projects in order to better judge if
is sufficient (making this a wontfix) or if this should be a
higher priority issue?

That would be a fairly major change from the current expected behaviour. I do
not think we should do this unless there is wide agreement its a good idea, or
at least some usability studies suggesting its a good idea, etc. (There's also
probably some difficulty in doing this efficiently given how deleted revision
info is stored in a different table currently...)

There's also some political issues with deleted revisions traditionally being
secret, some of the arguments at bug 24941 apply. (If you think this is
orwellian, you should see oversight ;)

Anyways, I'm going to close this wontfix.

Very correct about the data integrity piece, as I mentioned in comment 1. I use

odds are we'll run into it again for one reason or another.
