[Bug 31747] Generate email addresses as images to clock from web indexes
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31747 --- Comment #4 from とある白い猫 to.aru.shiroi.n...@gmail.com 2011-10-19 07:57:50 UTC --- The idea here is to offer a third way for people who want to display their emails on their userpage but not want to be spammed like crazy. The idea is to confuse the bots. If people want to use the current method textimage of @text.ext that would still be fine. Why do we want alt description? We could do without that particularly for emails. (and who doesn't display images really). If I do not want an alt description for my email, I should not be forced to display it. It could be crafted in a manner that the image becomes unreadable to bots. Image could be fragmented to make OCR impossible or very difficult. For instance OCR will have great difficulty recognizing a character if the character is broken in to two or more images. Or it could be one image per character. Also it is possible to add fake/invisible images in the mix that machines would pick up but not people. The more difficult it is for bots the better for us. I am fully aware there are ways around every precaution but that shouldn't mean we should surrender to spam bots. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 30442] give the user a chance to specify the gender when opening the account
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30442 Nemo_bis federicol...@tiscali.it changed: What|Removed |Added CC||federicol...@tiscali.it --- Comment #23 from Nemo_bis federicol...@tiscali.it 2011-10-19 08:09:34 UTC --- (In reply to comment #7) I'm opposed to this idea, we want the registration screen to be as clean as simple as possible +1 [...] We could probably comprise and have a Now that you have a account don't forget you can change your preferences type message. We already have such a message. And it's quite strong: it looks like you can't start editing without adjusting your preferences! [[MediaWiki:Welcomecreation/en]] (note that this is heavily customised on en.wiki and pl.wiki to replace bot welcomes). The MediaWiki signup page asks only the essential information to create an account, username and password, and it stresses that you don't need to provide email. One thing it doesn't ask is language: are we seriously going to ask in what /gender/ the user wants to be addressed while not asking in what /language/, which seems a bit more impacting on the user interface to me? This looks like an obvious WONTFIX for me with the current system. For the sake of completeness, we have some kind multilingual projects which sort of ask you your language because they give you links to ?uselang=-localised versions of the page, for instance Meta http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogintype=signup , and Commons has also the language selector everywhere which will put the create account link in the correct language, which will also be stored as a preference: but my point stays. Neil puts the problem in the correct perspective: I think that the current wording for [[Special:Preferences]] («Optional: used for gender-correct addressing by the software») is good but could be improved. Also, instead of putting it under Basic information I'd put it along with the language preference, changing Internationalisation title to User interface. That's another bug, I suppose? (In reply to comment #21) (In reply to comment #19) We'll have to ask the questions in all languages on all projects. Here's the use case: Rebecca creates an account on enwiki. English doesn't care about gender in its language - at least, not like German, say. Do we ask the questions? Yes, we have to: because some day Rebecca may go to dewiki, and have it incorrectly speak to her as if she's a man. This is really a global preference set, which we've discussed in a couple other areas. This also kind of breaks Neil's suggestion (but maybe not really, depends on how well translators handle it I guess): English doesn't care about gender in certain cases but German does, so how do you ask Rebecca about her (grammatical) gender? The gender is relevant for German but you're asking the question in English. I don't see why. If you're asking her the question in English, it's because she'll use the English interface and if she wants German she'll have to change preferences. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. We currently have a very simple way to decide what's on the account creation page; in your proposal there is none and this means mess and inconsistencies. I mentioned language but apparently I need more examples. If you get this preference added to account creation page, I want also the whole E-mail options section of [[Special:Preferences]] there, because email preferences are something users care about and most websites will (or are even required to) say/ask /immediately/ what they're going to do with your email. And I can go on, if you want me in nitpicking mode: A wants random preference from Preferences/Editing because it's so important and many users will make an edit del/immediately//del soon after account creation; B wants the preference to enable/disable the image filter because it's oh so obviously important (ok, we can hope no such filter will ever exist, but...); etc. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. Or, you can answer my question and ignore the rest of this comment. (In reply to comment #31) Email preferences are needed for a very particular thing - sending and receiving email. Not all users need it, and those who do, can find a way to define it. Not true. On many wikis, email notifications are enabled by default. This means that the new user could receive an email way before seeing any gender-relevant message and without doing anything, for instance because of a message on the user talk. In fact, i would remove email from the basic account creation form. It's needed for password recovery so it's a logical consequence of the password field. Gender, however, is needed for correct software messages. It's true that most sites and programs don't even give the option of correct messages, but we do. So gender must remain optional, but it should be more visible than today during the account creation process. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31817 Web browser: --- Bug #: 31817 Summary: The bdi tag is sanitized Product: MediaWiki Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: Parser AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il Blocks: 745 Classification: Unclassified HTML5 has several new features designed to help web designers create pages that show RTL text properly. Among them is the new bdi element. It stands for bi-directional isolation, and it basically means that the text inside it doesn't mix up with adjacent punctuation marks and numbers, which have ambiguous directionality properties. When it will be widely supported in browsers, this element will become very useful in Wikimedia projects. Probably the most common use case for it is showing the left-to-right name in an article about a person in a right-to-left Wikipedia; this name is usually written in the opening paragraph and adjacent to the birth date, which consists of numbers that get mixed up because of the bidi algorithm. Currently it is solved by using Unicode control characters (RLM), bdi is a more elegant solution. This tag is currently sanitized, so it is impossible to use it in MediaWiki pages. It shouldn't be sanitized. To do this, i suppose that it should be added to htmlpairsStatic in includes/Sanitizer.php, but i'm not so familiar with that class, so maybe something else is needed. When will it be widely supported in browsers? It was just added to Mozilla, and note that even the source file name is similar: https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/6f03f6a821c0 AFAIK, it is also about to be added to Chrome. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 30442] give the user a chance to specify the gender when opening the account
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30442 --- Comment #33 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2011-10-19 10:36:10 UTC --- Well, yes, it's not an axiom - most websites live without gender support and we lived quite happily without it for many years. And yes, it may well be a slippery slope to making the registration form too complicated. As far as i'm concerned, though, it is a central thing in the process of introduction. Consider meeting a person on a street - by looking at them or speaking to them you will probably know their gender before you know their name or email. I think this require a second confirmation from your side - * and @ are frequently used latin letters, If you map it them to Assamese, that means, for typing those symbols, you have to switch your keyboard, which I dont think a transliteration based keyboard should do. i would like to recommend the following changes: Ja = জ you corrected this in other comment as ja = জ But that is how it is already done. za = য ok, I can change this. য is currently mapped to ya. So you want to change that to za and change ya to য় (YYA) Ja or jha = ঝ Ja is already mapped to জ্ঝ jha is already mapped to ঝ khya = ক্ষ ক্ষ is KA + VIRAMA+ SSA - KSSA , Are you sure that it is phonetically near to khya? Currently to type ক্ষ , ksha is the sequence. ya = য় that would bring it closer to Assamese phonetics. are their technical difficulties/conflicts in implementing these? I see the above conflicts(from what is already present or in the phonetic similarity) in your suggestions, so I would like to get a second opinion from community before making the above changes. More eyes will help in better keymap :) I also request community to try the mapping at translatewiki.net first. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21860 jeb...@gmail.com changed: What|Removed |Added CC||jeb...@gmail.com --- Comment #30 from jeb...@gmail.com 2011-10-19 13:52:14 UTC --- A SHA1 digest and a local sensitive hash function would do the trick, but a small vector (that is the form before turning it into a hash) is even better. A Javascript version of something that works is available as a gadget at Norwegian (bokmål) Wikipedia. http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-page-authors-simple.js As I recall the FNV-algoritm is used in MySQL (also PHP?) and should be pretty effective in native implementations. The rest of the code has some problems in a few very special usecases and should be fixed, but works fairly well even as it is. Basically you need a digest and a local sensitive hash (or fingerprint vector) to speed up analysis of who is the actual author and whats going on in the article history. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

I've confirmed this in my testing. Upon starting collection creator with nothing in it, the text input field for the user namespace location for saving is available. Load a page and it becomes disabled. This has been the case for me on Firefox 7.01 and Internet Explorer 9. The user at Wikipedia was using IE 7, Firefox 3.6.23, and Opera 11.50. Furthermore, if you do try to save a collection into the project space, you get the error seen at the above Wikipedia link. I also confirmed this at Wikibooks. So we have server-side problems and issues affecting what users see as well. The server-side issues mean that guided creation of collections is not possible. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 31725] Assamese transliteration scheme issues with 'Ra' and 'wa'
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31725 --- Comment #14 from wikichai...@gmail.com 2011-10-19 14:45:41 UTC --- (In reply to comment #13) (In reply to comment #11) you could probably use * for isshar, if not used for chandrabindu. else @. I think this require a second confirmation from your side - * and @ are frequently used latin letters, If you map it them to Assamese, that means, for typing those symbols, you have to switch your keyboard, which I dont think a transliteration based keyboard should do. OK. We should wait for the rest of the community to weigh in. alternatively see my note below. khya = ক্ষ ক্ষ is KA + VIRAMA+ SSA - KSSA , Are you sure that it is phonetically near to khya? Currently to type ক্ষ , ksha is the sequence. yes, i am sure. even though it is a compound letter in Bengali and Hindi, it is an individual letter in assamese pronounced khya. (http://www.omniglot.com/writing/assamese.htm) also there are three letters for which you should phonetically use x. they are শ, ষ, স (phonetically they are voiceless velar fricatives https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Voiceless_velar_fricative). i would then recommend the following. x = শ X = ষ s = স c = চ C = ছ S = ৺ (ISHHAR) ya = য় that would bring it closer to Assamese phonetics. are their technical difficulties/conflicts in implementing these? I see the above conflicts(from what is already present or in the phonetic similarity) in your suggestions, so I would like to get a second opinion from community before making the above changes. More eyes will help in better keymap :) I also request community to try the mapping at translatewiki.net first. [Bug 31822] New: 500 error in db upgrade stage due to output buffer reset in stdout
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31822 Web browser: --- Bug #: 31822 Summary: 500 error in db upgrade stage due to output buffer reset in stdout Product: MediaWiki Version: 1.17.0 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: blocker Priority: Unprioritized Component: Installation AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: woo...@hypertwins.com CC: innocentkil...@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified Symptom: upon reaching the Upgrade existing installation stage -- my exact URL is http://woozalia.com/mw-config/index.php?page=Upgrade -- the installer hangs with a 500 error. After detailed investigation, I found that the problem occurs after the 10th iteration of DatabaseUpdater::runUpdates(). The problem seems to be that the next call to $this-output() (which is actually Maintenance::output()) in ConvertLinks::execute() writes text to the BEGINNING of the output buffer instead of to the END. This mungs the HTTP headers in a way which apparently makes Apache very unhappy. (I determined this by sending different text, which somehow changed the situation so that instead of a 500 error, I received the page as a file download -- which allowed me to see the source text that was being sent, which contained my text at the beginning -- before the HTTP headers.) This is probably a kluge, but I was able to stop the error from happening by changing the line $f = fopen( 'php://stdout', 'w' ); to $f = fopen( 'php://output', 'a' );. Now it gets all the way to Populating log_search table before hanging (at least there's no 500 error). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
