[Bug 31747] Generate email addresses as images to clock from web indexes

2011-10-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #4 from とある白い猫 to.aru.shiroi.n...@gmail.com 2011-10-19 07:57:50
UTC ---
The idea here is to offer a third way for people who want to display their
emails on their userpage but not want to be spammed like crazy. The idea is to
confuse the bots. If people want to use the current method textimage of
@text.ext that would still be fine.

Why do we want alt description? We could do without that particularly for
emails. (and who doesn't display images really). If I do not want an alt
description for my email, I should not be forced to display it.

It could be crafted in a manner that the image becomes unreadable to bots.
Image could be fragmented to make OCR impossible or very difficult. For
instance OCR will have great difficulty recognizing a character if the
character is broken in to two or more images. Or it could be one image per
character. Also it is possible to add fake/invisible images in the mix that
machines would pick up but not people.

The more difficult it is for bots the better for us. I am fully aware there are
ways around every precaution but that shouldn't mean we should surrender to
spam bots.

(and who doesn't display images really)
- Blind users
- People on slow connections who turn off images because it speeds things up
- Likewise people on slow connections who defer to text browsers because they
have less to load

It could be crafted in a manner that the image becomes unreadable to bots.

And real users should lose out on a valid bit of usability, the ability to not
have to manually type in an e-mail address and instead click a link to send an
e-mail. Because of spam?
...imho, that's like saying Wikipedia should turn anon editing off because of
vandals.

I'm opposed to this idea, we want the registration screen to be as clean as
simple as possible

+1

[...] We could probably comprise and
have a Now that you have a account don't forget you can change your
preferences type message.

We already have such a message. And it's quite strong: it looks like you can't
start editing without adjusting your preferences!
MediaWiki:Welcomecreation/en (note that this is heavily customised on
en.wiki and pl.wiki to replace bot welcomes).

The MediaWiki signup page asks only the essential information to create an
account, username and password, and it stresses that you don't need to provide
email. One thing it doesn't ask is language: are we seriously going to ask in
what /gender/ the user wants to be addressed while not asking in what
/language/, which seems a bit more impacting on the user interface to me? This
looks like an obvious WONTFIX for me with the current system.

For the sake of completeness, we have some kind multilingual projects which
sort of ask you your language because they give you links to
?uselang=-localised versions of the page, for instance Meta
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogintype=signup , and
Commons has also the language selector everywhere which will put the create
account link in the correct language, which will also be stored as a
preference: but my point stays.

Neil puts the problem in the correct perspective: I think that the current
wording for Special:Preferences («Optional: used for gender-correct
addressing by the software») is good but could be improved. Also, instead of
putting it under Basic information I'd put it along with the language
preference, changing Internationalisation title to User interface. That's
another bug, I suppose?

(In reply to comment #21)
(In reply to comment #19)
 We'll have to ask the questions in all languages on all projects. Here's
 the
 use case:

 Rebecca creates an account on enwiki. English doesn't care about gender in
 its
 language - at least, not like German, say. Do we ask the questions? Yes,
 we
 have to: because some day Rebecca may go to dewiki, and have it incorrectly
 speak to her as if she's a man.

 This is really a global preference set, which we've discussed in a couple
 other
 areas.
This also kind of breaks Neil's suggestion (but maybe not really, depends on
how well translators handle it I guess): English doesn't care about gender in
certain cases but German does, so how do you ask Rebecca about her
(grammatical) gender? The gender is relevant for German but you're asking the
question in English.

I don't see why. If you're asking her the question in English, it's because
she'll use the English interface and if she wants German she'll have to change
preferences.

If someone creates an account in the Arabic Wikipedia, it's relatively safe to
assume that she or he wants Arabic as her or his default language. Assuming a
gender, however, is impossible, even though it is immediately needed.

what the gender preference is for.

It's not immediately needed. It's very easy for me: we have things which are
absolutely needed to create an account (username, password, email for some
things), and things which are not (everything else). The former are asked when
you create an account, the latter are not.

No. They're not immediately needed /for account creation/. You can have
gender-relevant messages before, simultaneously or (soon) after account
creation, but this won't make them immediately needed for account creation
itself.
(Besides, I don't see where MoodBar is shown in current implementation.)

Apparently, MoodBar is not currently shown to new accounts. I guess that it was
being tested when i created this bug. Its translation is quite gender-dependent
in several languages.

And yes, gender is not immediately needed for account creation, but it is
immediately needed for showing messages in correct gender, and there are many
of them. As you said, it's something that is needed even before account
creation, which is an issue in itself.

And yes, gender is not immediately needed for account creation, but it is
immediately needed for showing messages in correct gender, and there are many
of them. As you said, it's something that is needed even before account
creation, which is an issue in itself.

Ehm, did you get my point or do you just consider it useless? You're misusing
the word immediate. We currently have a very simple way to decide what's on
the account creation page; in your proposal there is none and this means mess
and inconsistencies.
I mentioned language but apparently I need more examples. If you get this
preference added to account creation page, I want also the whole E-mail
options section of Special:Preferences there, because email preferences
are something users care about and most websites will (or are even required to)
say/ask /immediately/ what they're going to do with your email. And I can go
on, if you want me in nitpicking mode: A wants random preference from
Preferences/Editing because it's so important and many users will make an edit
del/immediately//del soon after account creation; B wants the preference to
enable/disable the image filter because it's oh so obviously important (ok, we
can hope no such filter will ever exist, but...); etc.

[Bug 31747] Generate email addresses as images to cloak from email harvesters

People can still use wikipedias own email system mentioned if they desire to
not deal with images or if they are blind.

The email on userpage is just an additional means. The other option for people
like me is to display nothing which is in essence less usable.

Your example about ip edits does not correlate with this proposal, please stay
on topic.

[Bug 30442] give the user a chance to specify the gender when opening the account

Email preferences are needed for a very particular thing - sending and
receiving email. Not all users need it, and those who do, can find a way to
define it. In fact, i would remove email from the basic account creation form.

Gender, however, is needed for correct software messages. It's true that most
sites and programs don't even give the option of correct messages, but we do.
So gender must remain optional, but it should be more visible than today during
the account creation process.

Ok, so you're still ignoring my question. I guess we'll start a conversation
about every possible addition to the page and in the end it will itself be a
proof of the confusion your proposal currently implies. Or, you can answer my
question and ignore the rest of this comment.

(In reply to comment #31)
Email preferences are needed for a very particular thing - sending and
receiving email. Not all users need it, and those who do, can find a way to
define it.

Not true. On many wikis, email notifications are enabled by default. This means
that the new user could receive an email way before seeing any gender-relevant
message and without doing anything, for instance because of a message on the
user talk.

In fact, i would remove email from the basic account creation form.

It's needed for password recovery so it's a logical consequence of the password
field.

Gender, however, is needed for correct software messages. It's true that most
sites and programs don't even give the option of correct messages, but we do.
So gender must remain optional, but it should be more visible than today
during
the account creation process.

You're working under the assumption that correct software messages are more
important than everything else. This is not a MediaWiki axiom AFAIK so you need
to prove it.

[Bug 31817] New: The bdi tag is sanitized

2011-10-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31817

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 31817
 Summary: The bdi tag is sanitized
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Parser
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il
Blocks: 745
Classification: Unclassified

HTML5 has several new features designed to help web designers create pages that
show RTL text properly. Among them is the new bdi element. It stands for
bi-directional isolation, and it basically means that the text inside it
doesn't mix up with adjacent punctuation marks and numbers, which have
ambiguous directionality properties.

When it will be widely supported in browsers, this element will become very
useful in Wikimedia projects. Probably the most common use case for it is
showing the left-to-right name in an article about a person in a right-to-left
Wikipedia; this name is usually written in the opening paragraph and adjacent
to the birth date, which consists of numbers that get mixed up because of the
bidi algorithm. Currently it is solved by using Unicode control characters
(RLM), bdi is a more elegant solution.

This tag is currently sanitized, so it is impossible to use it in MediaWiki
pages. It shouldn't be sanitized. To do this, i suppose that it should be added
to htmlpairsStatic in includes/Sanitizer.php, but i'm not so familiar with that
class, so maybe something else is needed.

When will it be widely supported in browsers? It was just added to Mozilla, and
note that even the source file name is similar:
https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/6f03f6a821c0

AFAIK, it is also about to be added to Chrome.

Well, yes, it's not an axiom - most websites live without gender support and we
lived quite happily without it for many years. And yes, it may well be a
slippery slope to making the registration form too complicated.

As far as i'm concerned, though, it is a central thing in the process of
introduction. Consider meeting a person on a street - by looking at them or
speaking to them you will probably know their gender before you know their name
or email.

Of course, you may disagree.

The MediaWiki:Usercreated message (used on Special:Listusers) needs
gender support; I originally thought the lack of the support is an
optimalization so that gender information need not be fetched for all those
listed users, but obviously, the user groups displayed are already gender’ed,
so this should not be a problem.

--- Comment #13 from Santhosh Thottingal santhosh.thottin...@gmail.com

(In reply to comment #11)
you could probably use * for isshar, if not used for chandrabindu. else @.

I think this require a second confirmation from your side - * and @ are
frequently used latin letters, If you map it them to Assamese, that means, for
typing those symbols, you have to switch your keyboard, which I dont think a
transliteration based keyboard should do.

i would like to recommend the following changes:

Ja = জ

you corrected this in other comment as ja = জ But that is how it is already
done.

za = য

ok, I can change this. য is currently mapped to ya. So you want to change that
to za and change ya to য় (YYA)

Ja or jha = ঝ

Ja is already mapped to জ্ঝ
jha is already mapped to ঝ

khya = ক্ষ

ক্ষ is KA + VIRAMA+ SSA - KSSA , Are you sure that it is phonetically near
to khya?
Currently to type ক্ষ , ksha is the sequence.

ya = য়

that would bring it closer to Assamese phonetics. are their technical
difficulties/conflicts in implementing these?

I see the above conflicts(from what is already present or in the phonetic
similarity) in your suggestions, so I would like to get a second opinion from
community before making the above changes. More eyes will help in better keymap
:)

I also request community to try the mapping at translatewiki.net first.

Just submitting a DNA sequence at Genbank (NIH): All the multiple
authors/source modifiers/etc. have an add button, but the first line (= 1
instance of the subform) is immediately visible and ready for user entry...

And the source modifier are a good case: would you know what a source modifier

[Bug 31820] New: Parser breaks on templates (in bnwiki)

2011-10-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31820

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 31820
 Summary: Parser breaks on templates (in bnwiki)
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.18
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: major
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Parser
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: h...@online.de
Classification: Unclassified

On bnwiki several pages including infoboxes aren't rendering (action=render
returns an empty html document). Even the content outside of the template isn't
showing up and there is no visible template error.

Example:
bn:মোহাভি মরুভূমি
action=parse returning an empty document:
http://bn.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=parsetitle=%E0%A6%AE%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%B9%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%AD%E0%A6%BF%20%E0%A6%AE%E0%A6%B0%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%AD%E0%A7%82%E0%A6%AE%E0%A6%BF
action=expandtemplates gives a PHP error:
http://bn.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=expandtemplatestitle=%E0%A6%AE%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%B9%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%AD%E0%A6%BF%20%E0%A6%AE%E0%A6%B0%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%AD%E0%A7%82%E0%A6%AE%E0%A6%BF

A SHA1 digest and a local sensitive hash function would do the trick, but a
small vector (that is the form before turning it into a hash) is even better. A
Javascript version of something that works is available as a gadget at
Norwegian (bokmål) Wikipedia.
http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-page-authors-simple.js

As I recall the FNV-algoritm is used in MySQL (also PHP?) and should be pretty
effective in native implementations. The rest of the code has some problems in
a few very special usecases and should be fixed, but works fairly well even as
it is.

Basically you need a digest and a local sensitive hash (or fingerprint vector)
to speed up analysis of who is the actual author and whats going on in the
article history.

2. If I search for ARTIGO 90º the search engine does not find anything and
ask me to create the page.

From what I can see, that page does not exist. ARTIGO 90° does, though, and
searching for it works.

3. If I search for Artigo if finds a lot of artigos in english articles
and
im able to choose one of them... than if i copy the title of the page ARTIGO
90º and then paste it the search box it will find.

Searching for Artigo gives me plenty of pages with Artigo in the name:
http://www.constituicao-angola.info/index.php?title=Especial%3APesquisarsearch=Artigogo=Ir

4. Why is the wiki not recognising Artigo 90º or ARTIGO 90º or even artigo
90º?

Because you're using º instead of °

Issue reported at Wikibooks:

http://en.wikibooks.org/w/index.php?title=Help:Collections/Feedbackoldid=2194412#Cannot_save_collection.2Cusing_Collections_tool

Issue reported at Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Help:Books/Feedbackoldid=454594252#Cannot_Save_to_User_Namespace

The loading of an existing collection or the creation of a new collection only
allows adding a title for saving to the project namespace but not the user
namespace. I've confirmed this in my testing.

Upon starting collection creator with nothing in it, the text input field for
the user namespace location for saving is available. Load a page and it becomes
disabled.

This has been the case for me on Firefox 7.01 and Internet Explorer 9. The
user at Wikipedia was using IE 7, Firefox 3.6.23, and Opera 11.50.

Furthermore, if you do try to save a collection into the project space, you get
the error seen at the above Wikipedia link. I also confirmed this at
Wikibooks. So we have server-side problems and issues affecting what users see
as well. The server-side issues mean that guided creation of collections is
not possible.

But it may not be desirable for many languages to break the word at arbitrary

[Bug 31725] Assamese transliteration scheme issues with 'Ra' and 'wa'

2011-10-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31725

--- Comment #14 from wikichai...@gmail.com 2011-10-19 14:45:41 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #13)
(In reply to comment #11)
 you could probably use * for isshar, if not used for chandrabindu. else @.

I think this require a second confirmation from your side - * and @ are
frequently used latin letters, If you map it them to Assamese, that means, for
typing those symbols, you have to switch your keyboard, which I dont think a
transliteration based keyboard should do.

OK. We should wait for the rest of the community to weigh in. alternatively
see my note below.

 khya = ক্ষ

ক্ষ is KA + VIRAMA+ SSA - KSSA , Are you sure that it is phonetically near
to khya?
Currently to type ক্ষ , ksha is the sequence.

yes, i am sure. even though it is a compound letter in Bengali and Hindi, it
is an individual letter in assamese pronounced khya.
(http://www.omniglot.com/writing/assamese.htm)

also there are three letters for which you should phonetically use x. they
are শ, ষ, স (phonetically they are voiceless velar fricatives
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Voiceless_velar_fricative). i
would then recommend the following.

x = শ
X = ষ
s = স
c = চ
C = ছ
S = ৺ (ISHHAR)

 ya = য়

 that would bring it closer to Assamese phonetics. are their technical
 difficulties/conflicts in implementing these?

I see the above conflicts(from what is already present or in the phonetic
similarity) in your suggestions, so I would like to get a second opinion from
community before making the above changes. More eyes will help in better
keymap
:)

I also request community to try the mapping at translatewiki.net first.

Could you please set up a page in translatewiki.net with the current mapping
(in the format that best suits you), so we may comment and converge?

Thanks,

[Bug 31820] Backtrace on action=expandtemplates

Hoo man h...@online.de changed:

--- Comment #3 from Hoo man h...@online.de 2011-10-19 14:48:29 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #1)
action=parse action=expandtemplates need the text parameter with the
content.
title doesn't automatically fetch the content from the wiki. Behavior in 1.17
is the same.
In trunk expandtemplates will give an error 'The text parameter must be set'.

That's true and I usually do it that way, but this time I did it that way cause
the text={{... form which I tried first didn't work. So both ways produce empty
pages, but only the title one a PHP error, dunno if that's caused by the page
or is another error (but I'm sure it shouldn't be that way)

[Bug 31822] New: 500 error in db upgrade stage due to output buffer reset in stdout

2011-10-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31822

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 31822
 Summary: 500 error in db upgrade stage due to output buffer
reset in stdout
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.17.0
 Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
 Severity: blocker
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Installation
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: woo...@hypertwins.com
CC: innocentkil...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified

Symptom: upon reaching the Upgrade existing installation stage -- my exact
URL is http://woozalia.com/mw-config/index.php?page=Upgrade -- the installer
hangs with a 500 error.

After detailed investigation, I found that the problem occurs after the 10th
iteration of DatabaseUpdater::runUpdates(). The problem seems to be that the
next call to $this-output() (which is actually Maintenance::output()) in
ConvertLinks::execute() writes text to the BEGINNING of the output buffer
instead of to the END. This mungs the HTTP headers in a way which apparently
makes Apache very unhappy.

(I determined this by sending different text, which somehow changed the
situation so that instead of a 500 error, I received the page as a file
download -- which allowed me to see the source text that was being sent, which
contained my text at the beginning -- before the HTTP headers.)

This is probably a kluge, but I was able to stop the error from happening by
changing the line $f = fopen( 'php://stdout', 'w' ); to $f = fopen(
'php://output', 'a' );.

Now it gets all the way to Populating log_search table before hanging (at
least there's no 500 error).

Screenshot of test page in OSX 10.7/Opera 11.51

I have tested all available fonts in WebFonts in many browsers with the given
URL:
* Windows 7/Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421
* Windows 7/Opera 11.51
* Windows 7/Safari 4.0.5
* Windows 7/Google Chrome 14.0.835.202
* Windows 7/Firefox 7.0.1
* OSX 10.7.2/Firefox 7.0.1
* OSX 10.7.2/Safara 5.1.1
* OSX 10.7.2/Opera 11.51.1087

I have found no immediately visible issues with display, except for OSX
10.7.2/Opera 11.51.1087. This OS/browser combination does not display the saz
font; instead squares are displayed. See attached screenshot.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Opera 11.51 on an OSX 10.7.2 installation
2. Visit page
http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=User:Amire80/All_WebFonts_languagesoldid=3359433

Observed behaviour:
* Line 17 is displayed incorrectly.

[Bug 31741] Feature to enable a category to hide files from other categories

I should have expanded the feature a bit;

Similar to that you are able to see hidden categories on a page, you should
still be able, if you want, to see the hidden images in the other categories,
but default the images are not listed in the category.

Also, if you end up on a superseded image, you still might want to be able to
go to an relevant category directly.

On commons, superseded files are files that have been replaced by an better
version of the exact same subject; for example
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%27Mary_Mother%27_%28Mary_Hillier%29_by_Julia_Margaret_Cameron_1867.jpeg
has been superseded by
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Mother,_by_Julia_Margaret_Cameron.jpg

Due to copyright and attribution issues, it has been decided that superseded
images are not to be deleted.

See http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Superseded for more images, and

Damn, that sounds like it'll actually be useful. Wish we had it in HTML 4! ;)

http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec/text-level-semantics.html#the-bdi-element

Once we pass it through, is there any CSS we could do to simulate it on
existing browsers that wouldn't interfere (like unicode-bidi: embed? or would
that also require explicitly knowing what direction to add), or would it just
have to be a progressive enhancement?

[Bug 31812] Broken use this file link in Commons for media with a ? in the file name

It's also not expanding the protocol-relative links, which likely breaks uses
in some tools.

The ? bit is probably from use of encodeURI() instead of encodeURIComponent:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Stockphoto.js

this.backlink_url = location.protocol +
//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/ + encodeURI(wgPageName);

After a forced refresh I can see an 'https:' in there (the location.protocol +
... bit) which was added October 13... may indicate some caching bugs (or just
that it's still not being loaded ideally through RL).
