[Wikidata] About Functional QuadStore for WikiData (was Are we ready for our future)

2019-05-03 Thread Amirouche Boubekki
GerardM post triggered my interest to post to the mailing list. As you
might know I am working on functional quadstore that is quadstore that
keeps around old version of data, like a wiki but in direct-acyclic-graph.
It only stores differences between commits. It rely on snapshot of the
latest version for fast reads. My ultimate goal is to build somekind of
portable knowlege base. That is something like WikiBase + blazegraph but
that you spinup on regular machine with the press of button.

Enought brag about me. I wont't reply to all the message of the threads one
by one but:

Here is what SHOULD BE possible:

- incremental dumps
- time traveling queries
- full dumps
- The federation of wikibase SHOULD BE possible since it stored in a
history like GIT and git pull git push are planned in the ROADMAP

And online edition of the quadstore.

Access Control List are not designed yet, I except that this should be
enforced by the application layer.

I planned start working on Data Management System (something like CKAN)
with search featrure. But I would gadly work with wikimedia instead.

Also, given it modeled after git, one can do merge-request like features,
ie. exist the massive import that is crippled.

What I would need is logs possibly with timing of queries (read and write)
to do benchmarks.

Maybe I should ask for fund at mediawiki?

FWIW, I got 2 times faster than blazegraph on microbenchmark.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T222299: dumpRdf does not work with MediaInfo entities

2019-05-03 Thread Smalyshev
Smalyshev added a comment.

I tried to generate dump with two patches above and it seems to work sanely
except for two things:

  1. Lot of complaints for non-existing entities (since not all NS_FILEs have
mediainfo slots). Easy way to fix it is to shut up warnings. Harder but more
correct way is to add query filter which would check for existance of required
slot.

  2. T222497: dumpRDF for MediaInfo entities loads each page individually

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T222497: dumpRDF for MediaInfo entities loads each page individually

2019-05-03 Thread Smalyshev
Smalyshev created this task.
Smalyshev added projects: Wikidata, Commons, SDC General,
Wikidata-Query-Service, WikibaseMediaInfo.

TASK DESCRIPTION
When dumping the entities to RDF, we try to load the data in batches, so that
we do not call the database for each entity separately. However, this does not
work for MediaInfo, since it has this:

public function getTitleForId( EntityId $id ) {
return Title::newFromID( $id->getNumericId() );
}

Which produces database fetch for every entity ID. Backtrace leading to this
is:

frame #0: Title::newFromID(id=13) at /var/www/w/includes/Title.php:471
frame #1:
Wikibase\MediaInfo\Content\MediaInfoHandler->getTitleForId(id=Wikibase\MediaInfo\DataModel\MediaInfoId)
 at /var/www/w/extensions/WikibaseMediaInfo/src/Content/MediaInfoHandler.php:187
frame #2:
Wikibase\Repo\Content\EntityContentFactory->getTitleForId(id=Wikibase\MediaInfo\DataModel\MediaInfoId)
 at
/var/www/w/extensions/Wikibase/repo/includes/Content/EntityContentFactory.php:149
 => array_map(callback=array(2), array(9)) (internal function)
frame #3:
Wikibase\Dumpers\RdfDumpGenerator->preBatchDump(entities=array(9)) at
/var/www/w/extensions/Wikibase/repo/includes/Dumpers/RdfDumpGenerator.php:118
frame #4: Wikibase\Dumpers\DumpGenerator->dumpEntities(entityIds=array(9),
dumpCount=unknown type: 10) at
/var/www/w/extensions/Wikibase/repo/includes/Dumpers/DumpGenerator.php:295
frame #5:
Wikibase\Dumpers\DumpGenerator->generateDump(idPager=Wikibase\Repo\Store\Sql\SqlEntityIdPager)
 at /var/www/w/extensions/Wikibase/repo/includes/Dumpers/DumpGenerator.php:262

Probably we may need some kind of batching strategy do deal with it? It's
different from other entities because other entities can create Title from
EntityId without DB access. Ironically, the code that uses Titles -
PageProps::getProperties - actually needs IDs, so it immediately converts
Titles to IDs. Moreover, I'm not even sure page properties that we dump even
exist for NS_FILE+MediaInfo entities. So we're wasting a lot of DB queries for
nothing.

Re: [Wikidata] Are we ready for our future

2019-05-03 Thread Marco Neumann
looks like you are ready for the weekend Gerard :-) I don't see a scale
issue at the moment for the type of wikidata use cases I come across. Even
total number of triples is plateauing at 7.6bn*. ( of course it's easy to
write "bad" queries that bring down the server). Allowing people to setup
their own local instances with their own triple stores in the future is a
good approach for a distributed and decentralized data management approach
here.

that said a faster and better wikidata instance is always appreciated. And
can certainly be provided. What's the current cost of running/hosting the
service with wikibase+blazegraph per month?

It is so bad that people are asked what kind of updates they are running
because it makes a difference in the lag times there are.

The response times are typically attributed to SPARQL queries from what
I have seen, as well as applying multiple edits with scripts or mass
operations. Although I recall there is a light queue mechanism inherent in
the Blazegraph architecture that contributes to this, and I am fine with
 slower writes.

What most users are not comfortable with is the slower reads in
 different areas of Wikidata.
We need to identify those slow read areas or figure out a way to get
consensus on what parts of Wikidata reading affect our users the most.

 So let's be constructive here:
Gerard - did you have specific areas that affect your daily work, and
what from of work is that (reading/writing , which areas) ?

Re: [Wikidata] Are we ready for our future

2019-05-03 Thread Marco Neumann
Gerard, I like wikidata a lot, kudos to the community for keeping it going.
But keep it real, there is no exponential growth here.

We are looking at a slow and sustainable growth at the moment with possibly
a plateauing of number of users and when it comes to total number of
wikidata items. just take a look at the statistics.

Date | Content pages | Page edits since Wikidata was set up | Registered
users | Active users

4/2015 | 13,911,417 | 213,027,375 | 1,913,828 | 15,168
5/2016 | 17,432,789 | 328,781,525 | 2,688,788 | 16,833
7/2017 | 28,037,196 | 514,252,789 | 2,835,219 | 18,081
7/2018 | 49,081,962 | 701,319,718 | 2,970,150 | 18,578
4/2019 | 56,377,647 | 931,449,205 | 3,236,569 | 20,857

When you refer to "growing like a weed". What's that page views? queries
per day? Mentions in the media?

Best,
Marco

As I've delved deeper into Wikidata I get the feeling it is being
developed with the assumptions of infinite resources, and no strong
guidelines of exactly what the scope is (i.e. where you draw the line
between what belongs in Wikidata and what does not).

This (and concerns of it being open to data vandalism) has personally
made me back-off a bit. I'd originally planned to have Wikidata be the
primary data source, but I'm now leaning towards keeping data tables and
graphs outside, with scheduled scripts to import into Wikidata, and
export from Wikidata.

> For the technical guys, consider our growth and plan for at least one year.

The 37GB (json, bz2) data dump file (it was already 33GB, twice the size
of the English wikipedia dump, when I grabbed it last November) is
unwieldy. And, as there is no incremental changes being published, it is
hard to create a mirror.

Can that dump file be split up in some functional way, I wonder?

Darren

@GerardM Yes, this request is merely about supporting Wikidata *content* in
those language variants, eg. allowing people to enter Sursilvan usage examples
for a Sursilvan lexeme (see T222426
). No need to translate the *user
interface* to Sursilvan, Vallader etc.

Re: [Wikidata] Are we ready for our future

2019-05-03 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
This mail thread is NOT about the issues that I or others face at this
time. They are serious enough but that is not for this thread. People are
working hard to find a solution for now. That is cool.

What I want to know is are we technically and financially ready for a
continued exponential growth. If so, what are the plans and what if those
plans are needed in half the time expected. Are we ready for a continued
growth. When we hesitate we will lose the opportunities that are currently
open to us.
Thanks,
   GerardM

Re: [Wikidata] [External] Re: Are we ready for our future

2019-05-03 Thread Young,Jeff (OR)
I imagine the federation of Wikibase instances becoming part of the solution:

https://addshore.com/2018/04/wikibase-of-wikibases/

Along those lines, I wonder if there is potential for Wikibase as a component
in the W3C Solid project’s effort:

I agree it is not clear what is being discussed here. It is growing, but in (my
opinion) in a positive way, i.e. being accepted as a viable knowledge graph.

Re: [Wikidata] Are we ready for our future

2019-05-03 Thread Thad Guidry
Gerard mentioned the PROBLEM in the 2nd sentence. I read it clearly

>we all experience in the really bad response times we are suffering. It is
so bad that people are asked what kind of updates they are running because
it makes a difference in the lag times there are.

The response times are typically attributed to SPARQL queries from what I
have seen, as well as applying multiple edits with scripts or mass
operations. Although I recall there is a light queue mechanism inherent in
the Blazegraph architecture that contributes to this, and I am fine with
slower writes.

What most users are not comfortable with is the slower reads in different
areas of Wikidata.
We need to identify those slow read areas or figure out a way to get
consensus on what parts of Wikidata reading affect our users the most.

So let's be constructive here:
Gerard - did you have specific areas that affect your daily work, and what
from of work is that (reading/writing , which areas) ?

[Wikidata] Are we ready for our future

2019-05-03 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Wikidata grows like mad. This is something we all experience in the really
bad response times we are suffering. It is so bad that people are asked
what kind of updates they are running because it makes a difference in the
lag times there are.

Given that Wikidata is growing like a weed, it follows that there are two
issues. Technical - what is the maximum that the current approach supports
- how long will this last us. Fundamental - what funding is available to
sustain Wikidata.

For the financial guys, growth like Wikidata is experiencing is not
something you can reliably forecast. As an organisation we have more money
than we need to spend, so there is no credible reason to be stingy.

For the technical guys, consider our growth and plan for at least one year.
When the impression exists that the current architecture will not scale
beyond two years, start a project to future proof Wikidata.

It will grow and the situation will get worse before it gets better.
Thanks,
  GerardM

PS I know about phabricator tickets, they do not give the answers to the
questions we need to address.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T222444: Create new wdio-wikibase release

2019-05-03 Thread Michael
Michael created this task.
Michael added projects: Wikidata-Campsite, Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  In T199409 `wdio-wikibase` was
changed to accommodate a change in WikibaseLexeme. This needs a new release to
make this change available to WikibaseLexeme during the daily test.

Also, we should use this opportunity to make `wdio-mediawiki` a peer
dependency. That should prevent the issue of having multiple versions of
`wdio-mediawiki` installed.

Overall, this is part of the effort to get the daily nodejs selenium browser
tests for Wikibase and WikibaseLexeme green again.

  **acceptance criteria**

  - `wdio-wikibase` does no longer directly depend on `wdio-mediawiki: 0.2.0`

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Claimed] T221774: Add Wikidata query service lag to Wikidata maxlag

2019-05-03 Thread hoo
hoo moved this task from To Do to Doing on the Wikidata-Campsite
(Wikidata-Campsite-Iteration-∞) board.
hoo claimed this task.
hoo added a comment.

  Possible way to do this:

Create `PrometheusBlazegraphLagService` class which internally fetches the
lag from a given Blazegraph instance like `curl
"http://prometheus.svc.eqiad.wmnet/ops/api/v1/query?query=scalar(time()%20-%20blazegraph_lastupdated%7Binstance%3D%22wdqs1005.eqiad.wmnet%3A9193%22%7D)"`
(where `wdqs1005.eqiad.wmnet` is to be replaced by the hostname). That would
be cached (given we don't want to hit Prometheus often and as we care for lag
in the 30-60m range, fetching this once ever 1-5m should be fine… this could
maybe even be done in a Job). We would do that for all known `wdqs` instances
and then sum/average/… the results.

This value would then be used for adjusting maxlag, as described above.

  Things to consider:

  - Is going to Prometheus directly the right thing to do?
  - How often can we sanely hit Prometheus?
  - Where do we want to manage the list of WDQS instance for this? (Or I guess
can we also ask Prometheus for all metrics at once?)

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T221752: Cognate data is not restored (any more) on page undeletion

2019-05-03 Thread thiemowmde
thiemowmde added a comment.

FYI, I found a way to fix the broken test. The issue seems to be that the
test cases all use the same page. The second last test moves the page and turns
it into a redirect. The last test tries to delete and restore the page, but
restores the redirect instead. By making the tests independent from each other
the issue disappears.

To PM: I believe this is not a production-relevant bug, and does not cause
data-loss.

However: I can not explain why the change
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/501594 made the test fail. It should have failed
before as well! This might be worth further investigation.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T222420: Wikidata links to Commons should appear in Special:WhatLinksHere

2019-05-03 Thread Sascha
Sascha added a comment.

Hm... in the sidebar on Wikimedia Commons (see screenshot), would it perhaps
make sense to replace the link to Special:WhatLinksHere by a link to
Special:GlobalUsage? Currently, there seems to be a usability/UX issue: the
feature is already implemented (thanks for the kind explanation on this bug, I
had no idea!). However, people may might never use the Special:GlobalUsage
unless they already know that it exists. Hence the suggestion to to remove
“What links here” from the sidebar and replace it by “Global usage” which seems
to be a superset. (There’s a risk of cluttering the user experience when the
sidebar has too many links).

better yet, let’s test that //during// deployment, on the debug server
(before syncing the patch to all other servers)

The failing browser test on media info extension seems to fail only on php
7.0 image.. we do not have that in production as far as we can tell. If that's
the case, the risk of patching this in production seem quite low compared to
cost of delaying this bugfix.

  Let's:

  - patch in production
  - right afterwards, manually test MediaInfo feature (edit captions) isn't
broken in production (that's the failing browser test on deployment branch now)
  - meanwhile investigate MediaInfo browser failure (one possible think here is
that MediaInfo has some commit in their master that might also need to be
cherry-picked to make this failure disappear on deployment branch)

The patch looks sane to me, and I think broken lexeme search is important
enough that I’d be okay with overriding the gate-and-submit failure and
force-merging the change.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T222426: Add monolingual language codes rm-rumgr, rm-surmiran, rm-sursilv, rm-sutsilv, rm-vallader, rm-puter

2019-05-03 Thread Sascha
Sascha created this task.
Sascha added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Please add the language codes rm-rumgr, rm-surmiran, rm-sursilv, rm-sutsilv,
rm-vallader, rm-puter to the list of language codes supported for monolingual
text values.

  In T210293#5155124 ,
@Lea_Lacroix_WMDE wrote that I should file a separate ticket for this. Also
pinging @WMDE-leszek on this ticket since it appears to be controversial.

Usage example: Try adding the sentence “Ils tgauns vivan dalla naschientscha
naven ensemen cullas nuorsas.” as usage example (P5831)
 in language “rm-sursilv” for
lexeme tgaun (L45642) . Currently,
this does not work; see screenshot.
