[Wikidata-l] Multi-storey signatures (was: personal secret)

Scott, are you aware of your signature (not including the quoted text)
taking cca. two entire screens in gmail? I know it's my problem, because

However it's a bit annoying. Old-style classic Netiquette suggests at most
4 lines of signature, not a double-decker.

[Wikidata-l] The first question after deployment of phase 2

2013-03-27 Thread Bináris
This is the first Wikidata 2 edit in Hungarian Wikipedia:
http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Magyarorsz%C3%A1gcurid=115diff=13394408oldid=13378794

I tried to replace the official language first, but it is linked in the
infobox as magyar. How can I use properties here?
The second thought was .hu, the TLD, but its value in the infobox is
currently hu which is translated to .hu by the infobox template, so
after inclusion from WD it became ..hu which is of course red. How can
I use that? Shall we rebuild all the infoboxes?

Other items are either missing from the infobox or from WD, so the reason
to choose the president whom I dislike was that his name appears both in WD
and the infobox and is linked in a simple form.

This is not a WIkidata question, this is an interwiki question, if you
understand the difference. I mean WD is a technical tool, but articles of
different wikis won't fit to each other better because we have WD; if you
couldn't link articles before WD correctly, it won't be easier now.

Of course, I know what I speak about. Please let me think a few weeks in
advance. Yes, we definitely have to speak about the purpose of the project.
Tha basic question is of course how to transfer data from outer sources to
Wikidata properties, this is the only important point in the whole thread.

2013/3/1 Sven Manguard svenmangu...@gmail.com

Sorry to be the contrarian, but I'm not sure we should be talking about
pulling data from Wikidata into Wikipedia until the devs announce that they
are close to deploying it. It makes no sense to build an infrastructure now
if the assumptions about functionality and API that you're basing the
infrastructure on aren't officially locked in yet.

Re: [Wikidata-l] gene templates - wikidata, when?

2013-02-28 Thread Bináris
Hi Benjamin,

there is a similar task. I am not sure this fits here. Hungarian Wikipedia
lists the redlist status of species of plants and animals (threatened, not
threatened etc.). There is a request to update this by bot from
http://www.iucnredlist.org/. Also biological property, also listed in
templates and also originates from an external database. I told them to
wait for Wikidata phase 2, which is now alive, but what next? Do you think
these tasks are related?

2013/3/1 Benjamin Good ben.mcgee.g...@gmail.com

I am considering the task of converting the templates from the gene
articles in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Gene_Wiki) to
use/create wikidata assertions. This involves an extensive update of the
template structure as well as the code for the bot that keeps them in sync
with external public databases. (https://bitbucket.org/sulab/pygenewiki)

More specifically I'm thinking about working with a Google Summer of Code
student on this project.

Given a time frame of now through August, would it make sense for us to
pursue this objective directly in the context of wikidata (through the
public API). Or would it be better for us to install our own version of
the wikibase software (kept in sync with code updates) and develop the new
gene wiki bot code locally with the aim of switching to the public API
later? Or is it too early to consider this project?

I want to get involved and support wikidata with this important data, but
I'm hesitant to ramp up development (especially with a student) in a moving
target situation.

Any thoughts?
thanks!
-Ben

Re: [Wikidata-l] Disambiguation in property names

2013-02-20 Thread Bináris
Oh, that's great! So there will be a dictionary to substitute the
property names with appearing names or soething like that? Or will it be
determined template by template?
So this is the solution to avoid identical property names: an extension in
parentheses.

2013/2/20 Lydia Pintscher lydia.pintsc...@wikimedia.de

On Mon, Feb 18, 2013 at 1:30 AM, Bináris wikipo...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi,

there was a talk (here or on project talk, I don't remember) about
identical
names of properties. In several languages sex (=being male or female) and
genus in biology have the same name which is prohibited in property
names.

Now, I see ország (rendszertan) (P75) in recent changes; ország means
country and it also has the biological meaning (plants, animals...)

A good solution would be if these disambiguating words in parentheses
could
disappear when applying them in phase 2 client. Then we could encourage
 people to use this form.
As we say in Hungary, both the goat has enough and the cabbage remains.
I am not sure if I was clear, tell me if not.

So to make sure I get this right: you're talking about how this is
shown on the client, so in this case in the article on Wikipedia? If
so then the name of the property shouldn't have any influence on how
it is shown there. The local editors can code their new infobox and
give it whatever label they want pretty much.

Re: [Wikidata-l] Pseudo-empty items

I hope these are transitional problems only. In this case there was only
one language, so fallback was not really relevant (the item has been
deleted since). But it woul dreally be strange if the text disappeared upon
adding the second language version. Perhaps it would be a solution to
display them in chronological order until fallback is established.

Gadgets are great, but I hope to see basic functions in the core.
