This is fixed now, and I discovered a bug while working on this (T189066)

@ovasileva one of the side effects of this fix, is now that wikidata descriptions under the title cannot be enabled in the beta mode on English Wikipedia for example. It would even allow us to warn users when a diff skips a deleted edit, and thus may mis-represent authorship.

Looks like it's a Wikidata issue. E.g. see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1900338 - it has a statement with an identifier. However, the dump at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:EntityData/Q1900338.ttl?flavor=dump shows both wikibase:statements and wikibase:identifiers as zero. Checking the database I see:

Ack. Yes looks like this got broken :/

The purpose of MFEnableWikidataDescriptions was supposed to be a kill switch for the entire feature.
wgMFDisplayWikibaseDescriptions is supposed to allow further configuration.

It doesn't seem to be working correctly. I'm surprised it hasn't turned them off everywhere! Apologies for being pushy earlier – I definitely want the Wikidata servers to stay alive as well :)

The bug that caused the incident should be thoroughly fixed now, with several commits already in wmf.23 (either before the cut or backported) and some more in wmf.24, and you managed to fix the query killer as well (thanks a lot!). Would it be okay if we try to enable caching again after the next train – perhaps on Monday? The reason why different projects develop different modules is that different communities have different demands. Working on the English Wikipedia has led me to alter the original line of coding that I developed early on.

I think it's important to examine the demand for functionality in order to determine which functions would be most valuable. On en-wp there is already an acceptance that any locally supplied value must override whatever may exist on Wikidata. That may be easiest to code within a module. There is also consensus that Wikidata may be used within infoboxes, but not elsewhere (with minor exceptions). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Wikidata_Phase_2

Beyond that, the two demands that are strongest are that information pulled from Wikidata must be sourced (not just "Imported from xyz Wikipedia), and that the use of Wikidata on any article must be able to be determined on an article-by-article basis - in other words, the fetching of Wikidata into an infobox has be enabled by a conscious decision on each article. The code to implement a whitelist (a flexible way to create "opt-in" infoboxes) is probably best left to the module.

There is code to meet those requirements in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module:WikidataIB but it would be valuable to have "smart" utility functions to encapsulate some of the common jobs such as returning a table of formatted wikitext, (taking into account links to redirects (should be linked) and dab pages (should not be linked)), as well as handling all date values according to precision and era, ranges of quantities, etc. In each case, the default needs to be to return only properly sourced values (with the option to return all values by setting a parameter).

It would also be appreciated if a similar generalised function could retrieve values that are stored on Wikidata as values of a given qualifier i.e. value of property1 -> qualifier -> property2 as there is little consistency on how properties are stored.

Similarly, there is a demand for a function that scans a property prop1 in the current page (or another page if qid is given) and for each value of the property that is a wikibase item, it fetches all of the values of prop2; then for each value of prop2 it retrieves each qualifier and its returns its value. That's potentially a hugely expensive function as it has to load multiple entities not directly associated with the current page using arbitrary access. There's some code to do that at the getValueQualIndirect function in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module:RexxS but I'm loathe to make it more generally available unless the overhead can be significantly reduced. Special:Version reports the same string (3.18.6-dev (srv)) on mediawiki.org and en.wikipedia.beta.wmlabs.org. dpkg -s hhvm on deployment-mediawiki04.… reports 3.18.5+dfsg-1+wmf5+icu57, which has a different minor version number than what’s reported on Special:Version (by the same system, according to the server header). It decides it wants to fetch all the pages in namespace 0, then use the page_user_timestamp to get all the revisions for those pages by the user in question. It's estimating 23 million rows it'll have to touch, out of 47 million total in namespace 0.

It could probably do better here, by using the user_timestamp index to fetch the revisions in order and filter them:

TASK DESCRIPTIONI think this is the top timing out query right now, on top of the usually bad combinations of recentchanges, at least for Wikidata- which is pathological because of the number of contributions a single page can have:

So I temporarily added a few debug statements (only long enough for me to make one web request, then removed again immediately), and it seems that adding this right after the wbsearchentities definition in Wikibase.php (L251)

and this after WikibaseRepo.entitytypes.php is loaded in WikibaseRepo::getDefaultEntityTypes (L560)

makes the wiki work again. Somehow. (It seems to be reliable – I tried adding and removing them about ten times, and each time the wiki went from broken to working back to broken.)

The reason I added those debug statements was that I suspected the interpreter was mixing up closures, and I wanted to see if these two were dumped with the same ID (e. g. Closure$#5;2604). But it looks like those statements are actually enough to fix the bug, somehow. If my suspicion is correct (which could also explain the stack overflow in the initialization – there’s a closure in that stack trace too), I suppose it’s possible that printing a closure is enough to stop the interpreter from mixing them up, perhaps because it causes some kind of deoptimization or something… does this sound at all plausible?

Counterpoint: as far as I can tell from /var/log/dpkg.log*, HHVM hasn’t been upgraded on that host since February 8th, so if this really is an interpreter bug you’d think it should have started to happen sooner. I’m trying to understand what’s happening here, and it looks to me like $wgApiModules['wbsearchentities']['factory'] (Wikibase.php L250) was somehow registered as a content handler factory‽ So the EntityContentFactory tries to call that factory to get a content handler (with no arguments, because those factories aren’t supposed to take arguments) and it crashes because the wbsearchentities factory (a completely unrelated kind of factory!) expects an ApiMain. But how does that happen? TASK DESCRIPTIONThe slots table currently contains the slot_inherited field, which is a flag that indicates whether a slot was inherited from a previous revision, rather than having been touched in the current revision. However, when revisions get moved to the archive table ("hard" revision deletion), there may not be a good way to find the revision that originated the slot's content - which means it's effectively impossible to determine the content's author. This is aggravated by the fact that the rev_parent relation is updated when revisions get restored.

To address this problem, slot_inherited should be replaced by slot_origin, which would record the ID of the revision that originated the slot's content. This would allow the content's author to be determined reliably. It would even allow us to warn users when a diff skips a deleted edit, and thus may mis-represent authorship.

Migration:


Since the slots table was only introduced after 1.30 was branched, and 1.31 is not branched yet, no migration is needed for installations using a stable release.
Since current master of MediaWiki does not actually use the slots table, even though it creates it on install or upgrade, no data migration/population is needed for live production systems or even development environments.
Fresh installs can simply create slot_origin instead of slot_inherited
If the slots table exists and has the slots_origin field, a database patch needs to be executed that drops slot_inherited, and adds the slot_origin field.

@jeblad You're right, sorry, my bad, so re-opened for now. You have a point, but I think it is a wider issue than what's fit for just this task for a single language code. This is not the first and likely not the last monolingual language code that isn't in CLDR. I think this should preferrably be discussed in a higher-level task like T144272, or perhaps a task of its own.
