  This affected both wdqs-blazegraph and wdqs-categories
  It recovered after about 20minutes and everything was back to normal again. 
Strange. I will let folks smarter than me in the blazegraph world to deal with 
this.

  Hello, can't we try to have a bit of both worlds ? Keep a weekly wikidata 
dump and have it sync with xml/sql dumps only on the 1st of each month ?
  Because, really, having almost 3 weeks with no wikidata dump is a major 
change.
  And this is sad that I seem to be the only one concerned with it.

  Don't get me wrong - I'd like to see this done. But I'd like to see twenty 
other things done //more//. And we, the core platform team, can only do so 
much. So we have to be picky about the rabbit holes we choose to fall into.

  In the end, it's the job of product managers to decide which of all the 
things that we'd like to do are the most important, and should be worked on 
first.

  Also, perhaps the necessary work can be done by someone outside the WMF, if 
they have an interest in making this work in postgres. Apparently it hasn't 
bothered anyone in the past ten years...

  The annoying bit is that the join condition for `pagecontent` will look 
something like `old_id = substring( content_address from '^tt:(8[0-9]+)$' 
)::int`, which hard-codes the "tt:". Thankfully PG has that regexp-based 
substring and casting NULL to `int` works right or it'd be even worse.

  @Lydia_Pintscher Sure! I have just deployed a demonstration of this use case 
on EditGroups .
  
  The goal is to index all Wikidata edit groups by the properties that they 
change (as statements or qualifiers, added or removed by the edit group). This 
can be useful to get an overview of the data imports that happened in a 
particular domain. For instance, the list of all edit groups using P50 (author) 
 gives you an overview of 
the ongoing author disambiguation effort in Wikicite.
  
  Some editing actions (such as `wbeditentity-create` or `wbeditentity-update`) 
allow users to perform big changes on items, and therefore do not expose the 
properties used in the edit summary. So, to make sure these edits are also 
indexed, we need to analyze their diffs. Hence the need for this API.
  
  One alternative would be to retrieve the JSON representation of the entities 
for all revisions involved and compute the diff manually, client-side. This is 
potentially more scalable as we could retrieve 25 diffs in one API call (25*2 
revisions). But implementing the diff logic is probably a bit more involved.

  Not sure you need duplicate to Wikibase as everything in production is 
supposed to run on WikibaseCirrusSearch now, and Wikibase hooks are planned to 
be removed soon (for varying definitions of soon depending on how Lexeme 
deployment is progressing). Wouldn't hurt to have it, but not sure if necessary.

  There is a possible workaround we can apply. The `Linker` tells us whether 
there’s any comment text before or after the autocomment currently being 
formatted, and since as far as I’m aware we only ever use autocomments at the 
very beginning of the summary, we can skip all others when formatting:

estimations.
  Let me try and refine it slightly.

  Again this ignores batching, but the actual edit count on the day was ~1.1 
million, which resulted in between 926848 and 826878 requests to load entity 
data, depending on which wdqs host you look at, so 84-75% of edits end up 
triggering a entity data load with the current batching methods.

  But the fact stands that varnish will always respond faster than php, and 
looking at even the smallest entity, a varnish hit shaves around 50% off the 
request time.
  If we say a single wdqs host is making 800k requests to special entity data 
right now with an average load time of 55ms, thats 4400ms or 12 hours spent 
loading data
  If we pretend we are loading every single revision (so 1.1 million) and 
actually hit the varnish cache (well sometimes not if we are the first server 
to ask) then we have ((110/12*11) * 25ms ) + ( 110/12*1 * 55ms ) = 
3025 ms or 8.5 hours
  So probably a saving of closer to 4 hours each day per instance of loading 
time. But if the updater were to actually then write to blazegraph for each of 
the retrieved revisisions then of course that would be 300k more updates, but 
IMO the wdqs updater can still request revisions like this, and choose not to 
actually write every single revision.

  This is all generally meant to just highlight that hitting varnish is 
obviously going to be faster, even if the updater itself think that entity data 
retrieval is fast enough.

this id validation checking if we have the revision already etc?
  The fastest way for this to work in the distributed fashion that that it is 
currently laid out in is to just retrieve every revision of entity data, using 
a varnish cacheable query string, hold the latest revision of an entity in some 
internal queue in the updater for a few second while waiting for more updates, 
and then just commit that to blazegraph for storage after a few seconds.
  This means less reducing the php calls dramatically, increasing varnish hits, 
decreasing overall time spent waiting for special:entitydata responses, and 
still allowing for batching.

  A few other comment that we might want to think about.

  PHP is being hit very roughly with 12.5 million requests to turn some PHP 
object into RDF output for special entity data, we might want to just consider 
caching that in its own memcached key inside wikibase so we only have to do 
that conversion once per revision, reducing this logic from running 12.5 
million times to just around 1.1 million times.
  This hasn't been considered before because special entity data is cacheable, 
and these should all be varnish cache hits anyway, but if the updater behaviour 
does not change then maybe we should add this?

  Also regarding 3rd parties using the updater, perhaps the revid based 
approach needs to be developed anyway to reduce the load that is likely to 
continue to increase. These should be hitting the cache, but they should also 
nt be getting out of date data, revid is the solution to that.

  The xml/sql dumps run twice a month; the 'full' dumps, containing all content 
for all revisions, run on the 1st of the month. The 'partial' dumps, containing 
all content for latest revisions only, run on the 20th of the month. They can't 
really run on the 15th because the previous run doesn't complete in time. We've 
done various tricks to speed things up but that just lets us break even as the 
amount of content continues to grow.
  
  If we want to 'sync up' the wikidata entity dumps with the xml/sql dumps, 
which seems to be a good idea, I could add in one more run on the 8th or 9th as 
an 'extra' run but we can't really fit a 4th run in there.

work you put into moving this to a more 2019-ish implementation. 
  Substantial renovation of legacy code should indeed not be blocked by 
(questionable) extensions built on top of it - sure way to stall innovation. 
The tectonic shifts just took us by surprise because we had word to the 
contrary - but all is well.
  I have a question regarding the "page-actions menu markup" - this introduces 
indistinguishable `li`s 

 (only the links one step down know the "role") and even
  hard-wires their order 
.
 Should the need come up to specify a different order, something that could be 
conveniently done on the style level  
nowadays, we'd be lacking the selectors to implement this. Would it not be 
beneficial to allow action identification already on the list item level?
  Of course, this is not a completely hypothetical question. For wikibase 
termbox we are moving the "edit pen" into the individual sections (there is no 
"page edit") and the hard wiring of order causes us trouble (T215494#5040282 
 ff.) with the "download 
action" eventually inconsistently positioned to the right of the "watchlist 
star" (the only other action). Of course we would also be happy about any other 
solution suggestion.

  Constraint check runs are going to run post edit and be persistently stored.
  T201150: Regularly run constraint checks for all items 

  T204024: Store WikibaseQualityConstraint check data in persistent storage 
instead of in the cache 
  
  This will mean most of these requests for constraint check data will just 
load from the store.
  
  There will be some cases that the data stored is out of date and will need to 
be recalculated.
  This is discussed in the current rfc @ T214362#4980932 
 and the few comments after 
that one.
  The initial plan for those cases would be to keep the current behaviour (run 
the checks in the request, as well as trigger something to store some updated 
values for subsequent requests) however when we discuss this in the future 
there are other options such as don't show anything / say they are generating, 
do the checking in the job queue, save them, and then get the UI to poll & wait 
for them etc.
