  The RfC was closed with "In this discussion, I see rough consensus to 
generally semi-protect all property pages. The arguments for protection are 
that properties are highly visible; they are rarely edited by IPs and new 
users, and most of these edits get reverted, so that there is no obvious 
benefit. The main oppose argument is that many editors in the projects, who are 
not autoconfirmed on Wikidata, will not be able to edit properties, and this 
may affect descriptions on the less common languages. These arguments are valid 
and clear, they have been discussed for a sufficient period of time, and the 
opposers are clearly in minority.
  
  An important argument has been brought forward but not sufficiently 
discussed, that if properties get protected not immediately after creation, but 
after some period (the proposal was 30 days, one user said they6 would not 
object against a year), it would significantly mitigate the negatives of the 
semi-protection, since interested parties can add the descriptions before the 
protection. This has not been sufficiently discussed, and I add a specific 
discussion of this topic below. Before this second discussion has been 
summarized, we should not be protecting properties right after creation.

  In order to have scap use that file, you should set `dsh_targets: wdqs` and 
ensure `default` is in `server_groups`.

  WDQS currently has 6 different server groups 
:
 `canary,codfw,codfw_internal,eqiad,eqiad_internal,test`
  
  The dsh_groups and server_groups serve a few different purposes:
  
  1. list the hosts to target
  2. group hosts to deploy simultaneously
  3. define the order of rollout to each server
  
  It looks like you have 17 hosts in 6 groups which is a lot of groups. The 
best path forward depends on how you want to deploy. Does it matter that 
`codfw` goes out before `codfw_internal`? If not, you could get rid of a lot of 
these groups, keep the canary group (if it's important) and change 
`server_groups` to something like: `canary, default` and remove all the other 
`*_dsh_targets` from your scap.cfg and the `scap` directory.
  
  This would roll out to the canary hosts, give you a chance to check them and 
roll back if needed, and then will deploy to the remainder of hosts as one big 
group. This may or may not be what you want to do. If your goal is to *keep* 
all these groups and just ensure you're not missing any servers you could 
always change `server_groups` to `server_groups: canary, codfw, codfw_internal, 
eqiad, eqiad_internal, test, default` which would keep the setup you have now, 
and use the puppet generated dsh group as a final group that would "catch" any 
hosts that you miss deploying to.

are using code in `lib/` for some of their requests. Did you encounter places 
in `lib/` that create/get a global `ILoadBalancer` instance themselves without 
it being injected? And if so, do you have an intuition for how much effort it 
would be to refactor them?

  That's a good approach but it would require (I assume) rather large 
refactorings.

that much since issues in wikidata client reads affect the repo behavior too as 
they are the same wiki)

small either. The table you're mentioning is `wb_items_per_site` and is really 
similar to term store but it's just not big enough to have its own section, I 
assume we can group it with term store and call it "wikidata secondary data 
store" or something like that.

  I'm looking into this, trying to understand it and get an idea whether I'm 
able to contribute something and thus should pick it up. But I'm currently 
still confused and have some questions:

it referring to requests that originate from the Mediawiki core instance that

  If 56% of the load is term store in total and that load is split roughly 
60/40 between clients and repo, then that means that ca. 33% of load comes from 
client term store requests and 23% from repo term store requests. How do term 
store requests from commons fit into this?
  
  Can client wikis on one hand and repo/wikidata.org on the other hand function 
without the term store data, maybe by gracefully falling back to QIDs 
everywhere? If yes, then groups splitting termstore/not termstore seem like 
they would make sense. But if everything goes down if the term store is down, 
then a split clients/repo would seem more useful. Does that make sense?
  
  **about other types of requests:**
  Also, there seem to be some requests that maybe don't make up much load but 
still (sadly) lead to fatal errors if they don't succeed, like sitelinks. 
(Judging from everything going down when that table was deleted.)
  We should probably make sure they are grouped into the "critical cluster" as 
well?

  This is correct but slightly different in practice, let me give you the 
example of Guzzle, in paper, we are declaring the dependency in composer

than a certain major version (for security for example), we break because we 
pinned it to a smaller major version and versions are incompatible but in 
reality this interface is way more stable than all of guzzle and it won't 
change with one major version bump (or twenty if you ask me) thus I don't 
except us breaking because of major version upgrade (in which in this case, I 
just bumped the version and didn't require anything else).
  
  So in short I agree it's brittle but as long as we don't do it for code we 
heavily use (and the usage is properly tested), declaring it through core 
should be fine. I don't have strong preference about it though.

  I could swear I was able to reproduce this issue earlier, either yesterday or 
today – but now I can’t anymore. Instead, regardless of “expand all sections” 
option in Special:MobileOptions, sections on User_talk:1997kB always become 
collapsed when I load the page, whether I’m logged in or in a private window. I 
tried setting `wgMFCollapseSectionsByDefault` to `true` on a debug server, and 
it didn’t seem to make any difference.
  
  Can anyone else still reproduce this issue, or figure out what’s going on?

  If that's the case then I think things are breaking in the best spot we can 
get (not the best envisionable) - upon CI when mediawiki has made a move (and 
mediawiki-vendor is following suite) and wikibase needs to adapt. Simply not 
tracking our deps because "core already does that" sounds brittle as we'd only 
find out in practice that we expect a different version.

  1. Which templates are required in order for both JS and PHP unit tests to 
pass?

  Okay, Let me give on overview on what has been worked on so far, this is 
basically a summary of the previous comments and reshaped:
  
  - Queries to term store are basically half of the load.
- Given that it's actually 1% of queries that actually reach the db after 
being handled by memcached and APCu, I repeat, this is scary.
  - At least half of our load is from client wikis but probably no more than 
70% (getting the exact number is impossible)
  - Finding out how much of queries are coming from the API appservers (like 
ratio of open connections) can be done by DBAs I assume, I can't find any other 
way to find the API/non-API context for queries.
- Also Special:EntityData doesn't matter in that regard because most of the 
heavy lifting is to ES and not s8
  - There's a trade-off, if we want to achieve resiliency (e.g. by separating 
portions of queries to a dedicated node), it would decrease scalability and 
flexibility of the infra, I recommend getting DBAs opinion on the decision too.
  - Load should not be the only factor in building groups, the type of queries 
and tables it queries is important, for example, recentchanges is only 1% of 
the load (not number of queries, the total latency) on s8, it doesn't make 
sense to have a dedicated node (per DC) for it but having them localized to one 
node makes sense so the queries take advantage of MySQL caching (of course, the 
node should not be only handling rc queries otherwise it would be a huge waste 
of resource).
  
  My personal preference in this is grouping term store due to the fact that 
it's going to be cached better in MySQL and the load is not negligible and it's 
pretty straightforward to implement (e.g. client/repo is not easy to implement 
given that most of them hit lib/ instead or lots of them actually coming from 
mediawiki core and we have no control over destination of queries originating 
from there). My other idea about this is that in the mid-term planning (like in 
5 years), all of term store can be moved to its dedicated section to 
drastically increase the scalability of wikidata's database in matter of 
read/write/storage, while such thing can't be achieved via repo/client split. 
OTOH, the resilience that repo/client can bring won't be achieved because 
client and repo queries won't be separated and issues originating from one 
would affect the other OTOOH (I have three hands), most of the load on s8 comes 
from mw core and lib code (and not repo/client code) thus bugs and issues in 
lib will bring down both anyway even if separate them.
