2018-06-05 Thread Micru
Micru created this task.Micru added projects: Wikidata, Lexicographical data.
TASK DESCRIPTIONDescriptions normally get translated from one language to another (especially true for properties). However, sometimes there is the case where a description of the source language changes, and the descriptions in other languages don't get updated. There is no way to signal that the descriptions are outdated, so it would be nice to have a way to make it more clear that an action should be taken to re-align them. I also think this is important for the future Glosses. It could be that the Gloss in one language changes, and it doesn't get updated in the other languages, creating potential misunderstandings.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T196443EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: Micru, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___

In T195740#4248802, @VIGNERON wrote:
The unit seems to me the worst possible example: the suggestion gives you everything, not just units (this is very confusing for the new editors, we frequently have question about that), the result is often a mess and wikidatians spend a lot of times to build and solve the constraints.

I agree that the unit text box suggester should give items from the unit subclass tree. Is there a ticket for that? Same for the language suggester box, it should suggest items that are subclass of language.

I would prefer not to waste more time (especially as there will be quickly much much more lexemes than there is units values).

I believe these tickets would reduce the work load involved in reviewing constraint violations: T168626, T190529TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T195740EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: Pamputt, Liuxinyu970226, Micru, VIGNERON, Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Aklapper, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___

2018-06-01 Thread Micru
Micru renamed this task from "[Epic] support for complex queries on-wiki using Lua (automated list generation)" to "[Epic] Support for queries on-wiki (automated list generation)".Micru updated the task description. (Show Details)
CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONWe want to allow [complex queries](From the [[ https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Development_plan#Complex_queries)org/wiki/Wikidata:Development_plan#Automated_list_generation | development plan ]]:
Users are able to write queries like “all poets who lived in 1982” or “all cities with more than 1 Million inhabitants”. They are entered in a page in the Query namespace and internally saved as JSON. They are then executed when resources are available - usually not immediately. The result is cached. A query can be set to rerun at regular intervals or on-demand by an administrator. The result of the query is shown on the same page. It can also be accessed via the API. The clients can include the result of a query in their pages to for example create list articles. This will enable for example to have automatically updated list articles on Wikipedia.

However it is not decided yet whether the Queries will reside on Wikidata.org or on wiki. It's part of the discussion we will have to define the needs better.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T67626EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: Capankajsmilyo, He7d3r, PokestarFan, Ita140188, Esc3300, MisterSynergy, Pasleim, Micru, Deskana, JanZerebecki, Yellowcard, waldyrious, jeremyb, Ricordisamoa, Aklapper, Laddo, Bugreporter, -jem-, Liuxinyu970226, Lydia_Pintscher, Eloquence, Zellfaze, Lahi, Gq86, Darkminds3113, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, LawExplorer, Avner, Gehel, Jonas, FloNight, Xmlizer, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___

2018-05-30 Thread Micru

TASK DESCRIPTIONIn addition to language codes, there are also script codes. 4-letter ISO 15924 codes are incorporated into the Language Subtag Registry for IETF language tags. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Retitled] T195411: Create a page to list all forms with a certain spelling

2018-05-29 Thread Micru
Micru renamed this task from "Create special page to list all lexemes with a certain spelling" to "Create a page to list all forms with a certain spelling".Micru updated the task description. (Show Details)
CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONIn Wiktionary, there is one page for each string of characters, which contains all the lexemeforms spelt the same. E.g. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/orange lists all the lexemes spelt "orange" in various languagesforms spelt "orange" in various languages.

It would be a good idea to have a special page which lists all lexemes containing forms with the same spelling (e.g. a page which would list all lexemes which have a lemma or form "orange" in different languages). This would provide a more Wiktionary-like view of the data and it could also perhaps be used with Cognate to link Wiktionary pages to Wikidata and vice versa. That would make it easier for Wiktionary users to navigate to Wikidata, and if we link to the special page from the individual lexemes, also easier for Wikidata users to navigate to Wiktionary.

It would be different from a search because it would return things in a consistent order (by language then by part of speech, most likely). In particular, capitalisation and accents matter for Wiktionary, but the search would ignore those. However, the entity suggester in the search bar could display this page as an entry point to all lexemes containing that form (as opposed as showing all forms independently in the entity suggester, which would take too much space).

Additionally, when there are more than one form with the same string of characters, the string of characters of the form itself could link to this page, so that the users can navigate from a form in one language to the homograph in another (or the same) language located in a different lexeme.

I think it would be a good idea to have a special page which lists all lexemes with the same spelling (e.g. something like "Special:ListLexemes/orange" which would list all lexemes which have a lemma or form "orange")This can be implemented in several ways:
- A special page (e.g. This would provide a more Wiktionary-like view of the data and it could also perhaps be used with Cognate to link Wiktionary pages to Wikidata and vice versa. Ah yes, you are right, I hadn't noticed that Lexemes have their own namespace. In that case. What would be easier? To create a new namespace for automated disambiguation pages for form/lexemes? Or perhaps move Items to their own namespace and use ns0 for the automated disambiguation pages for form/lexemes? I assume that the second option is not possible, but I ask anyway for clarification.

Not what I was trying to explain, but thanks for pointing it out because it gives me the chance to try again to make more clear my point. Two different CC licenses:

CC-BY-SA (Attribution-ShareAlike), this one exists already, and the terms are basically that you must give appropriate credit and you must use the same license. You are free to share and adapt.
Contribute Alike (to a common space), this one does not exists. The proposed terms are that you must contribute to the common public space as much value as you are taking from it, and when you do so you have the rights to use the material. Whatever you release based on the original material can be in turn used by anyone who also has contributed to the common space the same ammount of perceived value.

The advantages are:

It creates a snowball effect by incentivating to contribute in order to use existing materials
It is more fair because what I donate to the common space will be matched by others

The disadvantages are:

It requires assigning a (virtual) value both to the data, services, files provided and to the ones received. And also keeping track of the "payments" in kind.
The person/organization wanting to use the data might not have anything of value for the commons (but still it could be annotated as "debt" to the community)

From the conversation here I think that recording lexemes with the same spelling is not as interesting as recording forms with the same spelling. Or perhaps both can be recorded. In any case I find this idea interesting, would it be possible to have dynamic pages like https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/orange or is it necessary to do it through a special page?

While thinking about this it occurred to me that it could be related to the search function. In T193728#4223211, @Cirdan wrote:
CC licences are built within the framework of current copyright law.

That seems to be the main issue, we are thinking about current CC licenses/copyright law without considering that these are a construct that can be changed as society and its needs evolve. I consider more interesting to think about what we would like to achieve eventually, and see how the CC licenses/law (present or future) can assist us in that mission.

In my view Wikipedia/OSM and Wikidata have different philosophies. Wikipedia/OSM rely on their identity to guarantee their existence. Under their brand people gather to "create" content (actually Wikipedia builds on top of other people efforts, but let's not get there now) that can be shared by anyone as long as they attribute the brand. Wikidata on the other hand is purely selfless, there is no need to "pay" for the data with attribution (a kind of gratitude).

While both approaches seem ok in principle, what I would like as a volunteer, and member of the open knowledge ecosystem is to have access to all knowledge. I want to be able to enjoy the freedom of belonging to this movement by sharing my time, energies, and effort to make it thrive. However, I do not want that my effort is duplicated, I want that what I "create" in one website can be reused by all the members of this ecosystem without restriction. It's fine if when I step outside of this bubble other rules apply, but within the bubble of open knowledge I expect as much brotherhood and collaboration as possible.

There would not be the need to talk about licenses if Wikidata would let OSM handle all geographic information, and would integrate more tightly with their systems to allow transclusion. Why does Wikidata need to get into OSM territory when they can do the geographic data handling much better?

Going back to the subject of copyright law, I would like to point out that it was created with a certain paradigm in mind and that we should not restrict ourselves by it. We can still play by the existing rules while creating a different game. In my opinion data release would be more interesting for data creators if we could give them "something" in exchange for their data. We cannot offer them attribution, or money, but we could give them permission to access more data by organizations that have contributed it under the same rules. What we need is not a "share-alike" license, but rather a "contribute-alike" license so that there is more incentive in enriching the commons. Also as a volunteer I find more fair if people who use my work also contribute with their work.

In a way Wikipedia already has a "contribute-alike" agreement, it is just not explicit, but tacit. Users come to the site, access it as they wish, and they are asked to make a donation every once in a while. It is not a contribution in the same way as writing an article, but it is still a contribution which is also necessary to keep the project alive.

As for the original purpose of the ticket it seems that we will have to wait for legal advice. Or if we want to have it more clear then the WMF could sue WMDE for copyright infringement and see what the court decision would be :-)TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T193728EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: ArthurPSmith, SimonPoole, Scott_WorldUnivAndSch, Micru, lisong, Lofhi, Nemo_bis, TomT0m, jrbs, EgonWillighagen, sarojdhakal, Agabi10, NMaia, Simon_Villeneuve, Jarekt, Rspeer, OhKayeSierra, Aschmidt, AndrewSu, Mateusz_Konieczny, Maxlath, Huji, Glrx, Realworldobject, Ltrlg, Papapep, Tgr, Ayack, Gnom1, MichaelMaggs, MisterSynergy, Pasleim, Cirdan, 0x010C, Sylvain_WMFr, Denny, Ivanhercaz, Pintoch, Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Aklapper, Psychoslave, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, ZhouZ, Mpaulson, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, Slaporte, Mbch331, Jay8g___

TASK DESCRIPTIONAs I user I want to be able to show only the changes I understand, and I also want to be able to see either Item changes, or Lexeme changes. For this reason I propose new filters for Recent changes and Watchlist.

The default active filters should be the languages that the user has configured in babel boxes or user configuration, AND both Item and Lexemes.

However it should be possible for the user to show only Lexemes, or only items. And of course it should be possible to select more/less languages or all of them.

When a language is an active filter:

Only the changes in a label/alias/description in that language for items will be visible
Only lexemes that have that language will be visible

I'm again sorry to say that, but your comments show a deeply flawed understanding of copyright.

Thank you then for using your time to enlighten me and whoever who might be reading this conversation.

Copyright of texts is by no means "flexible". It seems you are confusing plagiarism and copyright violation, which are completely separate categories (the former is a concept in the context of academic scholarship, the latter a concept in the context of law). What we are discussing here is whether data collections licensed under CC-BY-SA or other non-CC-0 licenses (like OSM) can be imported to Wikidata. The licenses of these collections do not simply vanish because one alters some words or uses a computer program to extract the information.

Wikipedias rephrase the content of works under copyright and rebrand that content as CC-BY-SA, which label do you put to that practice? In which way is it different from doing the same with any content and rebranding it as CC0?

If there are cases where copyright law permits the extraction of information from copyrighted texts, then this applies to CC-BY-SA licensed texts as well, so there is no need to change CC-BY-SA to extract information from Wikipedia.

That would be ideal.

It's not a "clarification", it would constitute a retroactive conversion of CC-BY-SA into a license which is effectively CC-0. As we have explained to you multiple times now, that is not possible without consent of every single contributor of a copyright protected text to Wikipedia and it is highly doubtful that a majority of Wikipedians (or the WMF) is interested in converting Wikipedia to CC-0.

Well, you just said that that there might be cases "where copyright law permits the extraction of information from copyrighted texts", so I believe that an explicit indication about those cases in the CC-BY-SA license could be helpful for other people to avoid repeating this conversation in other places.

(I can only urge you again to carefully read the explanations people in this discussion have given you and perhaps also look into copyright law (a Wikipedia article will do) and the CC-BY-SA and CC-0 license texts to understand the fundamental issues we are discussing here.)

I did, however there is not much legislation on data mining texts with copyright (is there any?).TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T193728EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: SimonPoole, Scott_WorldUnivAndSch, Micru, lisong, Lofhi, Nemo_bis, TomT0m, jrbs, EgonWillighagen, sarojdhakal, Agabi10, NMaia, Simon_Villeneuve, Jarekt, Rspeer, OhKayeSierra, Aschmidt, AndrewSu, Mateusz_Konieczny, Maxlath, Huji, Glrx, Realworldobject, Ltrlg, Papapep, Tgr, Ayack, Gnom1, MichaelMaggs, MisterSynergy, Pasleim, Cirdan, 0x010C, Sylvain_WMFr, Denny, Ivanhercaz, Pintoch, Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Aklapper, Psychoslave, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, ZhouZ, Mpaulson, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, Slaporte, Mbch331, Jay8g___

In my understanding, it would need an update to the CC license itself, which would need to be done by CC, and then have the license be adopted by the Foundation together with the community

@Denny If we need the support of CC on this, there is no harm on asking for it. In a way the problem that we are having is something that will benefit others if it gets addressed in the proper way, at the source. In my opinion, a CC license that would allow for data mining as CC0 would be most helpful, and not only for the Wikimedia movement.

But as said, I would be rather troubled by such an approach.

Do you care to explain why does it bother you to clarify the license?

The concept of "rights" is quite flexible, as shows Wikipedia. The Wikipedias are based on texts that have copyrights but they have been re-paraphrased so that the copyright no longer applies. Same with data-mining, in a way it is re-paraphrasing a text in a machine readable format.

It is most definitely not [feasible]

Why not? Licenses are updated all the time. From 3.0 to 4.0 or whatever is the current version. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T192249: Support for non-integer Wikidata IDs (or alternative)

2018-04-16 Thread Micru
Micru added a comment.
So if I understand correctly, you would like to have custom Entity IDs instead of the usual Q followed by an integer (Q). On Wikidata normally the Entity IDs are not visible, what the user sees is the label of the entity. So I assume that in the use case of OSM you could have an entity with all the labels with the same string value for all languages, which could be enforced with a bot. That way you can maintain the value of the tag or change it when necessary.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T192249EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: Micru, Aklapper, daniel, Yurik, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T151626: Investigate and decide the representation of languages and variants in Lexeme entities

2017-01-06 Thread Micru
Micru added a comment.
There is some criticism about using a fixed set of codes for the representation of languages and variants:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_639-3#Criticism
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.824.7083=rep1=pdf

The ISO standard that was supposed to encode variants, ISO 639-6:2009, was withdrawn in 2014 with no planned replacement.

However, there is the need to administer the range of options to avoid partisan edits. The current model used by the monolingual datatype works well in that case because it omits language variants. Wiktionaries sometimes mention the language variant on the pronunciation or on the definition. For instance in en-wikt tomaca only lists two pronunciations, however ca-wikt tomaca lists two pronunciations plus the dialects where the word is used (català central, and valencià).

A possible solution could be to have a mandatory field for language from a fixed list administered by the community, and an optional field for variants encoded as items. Constrain checks could be performed by bots to ensure that the selected variants are in the subclass tree of a given language.

Another option is to represent the language variant as a statement or qualifier. While more flexible, it adds complexity.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T151626EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: Nikki, Lydia_Pintscher, WMDE-leszek, thiemowmde, Denny, Micru, Aklapper, Lexicographical data, daniel, D3r1ck01, MuhammadShuaib, Izno, Psychoslave, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Gryllida, Shizhao, Arrbee, Mbch331, Jay8g___

@Nikki Thanks for the query, I have completed the missing information and now it should return only one result - the sandbox item.

There are languages variants that do not have any code, so it is more practical to use an item than to hard-code them into the system. Besides sometimes it is just a matter of a couple of uses, there is no need to create a code for each of the 6k+ languages in the world plus all the varieties when we can just require the corresponding item. If an item would be used more frequently, then we could migrate it eventually to its code. their talk pages to improve the layout, other wikipedias like the French, have
designs better suited for the task. For instance, see the infobox on:
  https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Nom_du_vent

The data contained there corresponds to 3 distinct wikidata items, but it is
not linked to wikidata yet.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T128173: Represent editions as interwiki links on Wikisource

2016-03-03 Thread Micru
Micru added a comment.

@Purodha It is not the same issue. This task refers to items in wikidata that
are split into more two or more items to represent the metadata. Each of the
so-called "edition items" has an interwiki link to a different domain. The
problem is that since the structure it is like this, it is necessary to
aggregate them. For example given the following wikidata items:
Work item (contains interwikis to wikipedia articles)
+Edition item 1 (contains 1 interwiki link to 1 wikisource page)
+Edition item 2 (contains 1 interwiki link to 1 wikisource page)
+Edition item 3 (contains 1 interwiki link to 1 wikisource page)

The idea is to aggregate all interwiki links and show them in each wikisource
page. That is, the page linked by the "edition item 1" should also contain the
interwiki links contained in "Edition item 2" and "Edition item 3"

The case you mention is different and has its own task:

2016-03-03 Thread Micru
Micru created this task.
Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Many Wikipedias use template:Infobox book that contains metadata
  https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5858283

However this is stored on wiki, and not on wikidata. Ideally a new template
should use the work/edition distinction and fetch the data from Wikidata,
according to the fields defined on
  https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Books

Ideally this data should also be used by Wikisource and eventually by Commons.

2016-02-26 Thread Micru
Micru created this task.
Herald added subscribers: StudiesWorld, Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
There are works on Wikisource that have several editions/translations for the
same language, for instance "The Raven"
  https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22726
Each edition is linked with the properties "edition" (p747) and "edition or
translation of" (p629). Each one of the items contain a sitelink to a different
wikisource, for that reason the links don´t show up on Wikisource.
It is necessary to collect all the sitelinks linked from items in the
star-like structure and represent the links on the sidebar for each one of the
editions. The "edit" link would have a different effect linking to the item
representing the work.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T127950: Support celestial coordinates

2016-02-24 Thread Micru
Micru created this task.
Herald added subscribers: StudiesWorld, Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
In astronomy, a celestial coordinate system is a system for specifying
positions of celestial objects: satellites, planets, stars, galaxies, and so
on. Coordinate systems can specify a position in 3-dimensional space, or merely
the direction of the object on the celestial sphere, if its distance is not
known or not important.

The celestial equivalent of latitude is called **declination **and is
measured in degrees North (positive numbers) or South (negative numbers) of the
Celestial Equator. The celestial equivalent of longitude is called** right
ascension**.

The most popular celestial coordinate system is the **equatorial coordinate
system** and, similarly to the geographic coordinate data type, it requires of
two angles, right ascension and declination. The nomenclature is a bit
different using hour angles (hours ( h ), minutes ( m ), and seconds ( s ))
instead of degrees (degree, (°) minute ('), second ('')), which means that a
circumference is 24h instead of the customary 360°.
