Just a bit of info on why I've nominated this for the 2020 hackthon: There is currently a major issue with storing statistical data in Wikidata, which would be solved if we could upload the data to Commons as Tabular Data files. It's proving unsustainable to use qualifiers to break down statistical data by date, let alone using any further breakdown (e.g. gender or age group). Items which need to store such data (e.g. countries) end up far too cluttered with statements so we simply have to choose not to keep historical data or any further breakdown. We can currently store the tabular data on Commons, but without being able to query it alongside data in Wikidata it has a tiny fraction of the value. Using UNESCO and World Bank data for example, we would be able to generate charts like (Percentage of Primary age girls out of school in Algeria since 1970). Obviously that is just one example in one domain, the possibilities are truly endless!! I'm going to be bold and go ahead with updating the Guided Tours library <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Guidedtour-lib.js> to the new version I made on test.wikidata. I'm rushing it through as the finding GLAMs Challenge <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FindingGLAMs_Challenge> starts tomorrow and there are 5 new tours ready to be added that won't work correctly with the current version of the tours library. The currently live 'items' and 'statements' tours also have serious issues that will resolve with the update. I had to fix a few things with the slide order and headings in the wiki text, so if you want to carry on editing that make sure to do it from my test version (https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/User:NavinoEvans/tours/references) As with all the versions on test wikidata, any text within slides that relies on P or Q numbers will be mangled, but will all sort out automatically on live Wikidata. Also as mentioned, the reference URL attaching will be a bit funny because of the different UI on test wikidata - the best thing to do is click the "manual" tab when you get to adding a reference as this is then similar to live wikidata. p.s. TASK DESCRIPTION
Currently the user is left on the tour Wikidata item at the end of the tour.
This confusing as they should not carry on editing the item.
Instead we they should always redirect to
https://wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Tours once thy click the final complete
button.
At the moment, this can be done in relatively hacky way for any individual
tour by adding the following for the final step in the JavaScript file for the
tour:

However, there we should instead use the built in feature of the Tour library.
The only problem is that we don't seem to have any CSS for the `{action:
"wikiLink"`} button type.
It also looks like the current version of Guidedtour-lib.js overrides the
final button with an "end" button type so this would need to be adjusted so
anything defined in the options overrides the default. Or we simply change the
default to the link back to main tours page (which I personally think is good
for all Wikidata tours)
Adding this to the step options does show a working button, but with no
button text/image:

NavinoEvans added a comment. Hi all, I think I've managed to combine the best of both versions and fix most of the outstanding issues I was planning to report. There are some hacky parts which need to be resolved by making small changes to the guiders library <https://doc.wikimedia.org/GuidedTour/master/js/source/mediawiki.libs.guiders.html#mw-libs-guiders>, but for me this is fine to go live so we have everything working instead of broken. Then we can clean it up after some discussion over the coming weeks/months. You can check how this tour works https://test.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q211911=wbcoordinates Note: The reference slide is a bit mismatched with slide text and attachment as there's a new UI on test.wikidata. What I've fixed is: - Next step is now triggered whether you click the next button or complete an action in the UI. - However you complete the step, the next slide will wait for the new elements to be loaded so that it can attach to it correctly (instead of floating in the middle of the page). - The `onShow` event only fires once, so you do not get actions repeated twice - Once a step is completed, the action will not be triggered again. This means you can move back/forward through steps without the actions repeating every time (and creating multiple "new statement" boxes for example) - Fixed T244747: Wikidata Tours: Stepping back shows next and previous steps at once <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T244747> The main hack is that I've added a new `actionBtn2` property in the step options. This is to prevent the automatic clicking on the `actionBtn` element whenever a slide advances (in the guiders library). We need to wait to advance the slide until the DOM is ready with the element to attach the guider to. The other hack is closely related, I just needed to remove the click event for the "next" button, so we could trigger the DOM change and wait for completion before advancing. Does anyone have any objections to me adding this as the main new version? As well as temporarily changing the two tours we currently have live to use `actionBtn2` instead of `actionBtn`. I want to report all the outstanding issues with tours (there are lots!) but it does not make sense to do this until we sort out which versions are where and find the current best version to use and build on. TASK DESCRIPTION When any step in a tour uses the `attachTo` property for positioning the pop up, the **back button** shows both the next and the previous slide at the same time. For steps which do not use the `attachTo` property, you can navigate forward and back normally without any problem. **Steps to Reproduce:** 1. Load the items Wikidata tour - https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q16943273=wbitems 2. Verify that the back button works perfectly up to and including the "Item Pages" step (step number 5) 3. Once you reach the "Labels" step (step number 6), press the back button **Actual Results:** After clicking the back button on step 6 (the first step to include an `attachTo` property), the pop ups for both step 5 and step 7 are shown at the same time. Just to confirm from my previous message after some further testing, there are in fact two separate issues: Bug 1 - User can reach a step where the tour popup needs to attach to an element which is not visible - If you use **only the "next" arrow** to get to the next tour window, then you can reach later steps without having actually completed the task in each instruction window. If the skipped task was needed in order to show an element on screen for the next step, then the instruction window will default to the middle of the screen as the element it needs to attach to is not visible Steps to reproduce: 1. Load this tour - https://test.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q1027=wbqualifiers=ok 2. On Step 6 "Add Qualifiers", do **not** complete the instruction to click on the "edit" button. Instead just click the "next" arrow. 3. On step 7, you can see that the tour popup is just in the centre of the screen. It is trying to attach to the "Add qualifier" button, but this is not visible because the "edit" section was not been opened in Step 6. Bug 2 - Race between DOM loading and tour popup trying to attach to it -- This only happens in two situations: 1. If the very first step in the tour has an attached popup --- The page may not have been fully loaded when the Step 1 popup tries to attach to an element. You can see an example of this when you load this test tour - https://test.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q1027=wbtest=ok For me, the popup is not attached the **first time** the page loads (i.e. before it's cached). On subsequent reloads it works fine, but happens once again after I clear my cache 2. The user triggers the next step by clicking on a button which **shows a new part of the page** - This can happen in all the same situations as Bug 1 above, but by //completing// the instruction instead of skipping it with "next" arrow. So, whenever the user **gets to the next step by performing an action that will show/create elements** on the page, the next popup attachment needs to race with the DOM being updated (next popup is trying to attach to DOM elements that are being rendered simultaneously) I can't repeat this issue reliably on any particular tour. Examples can be found in any tour steps that ask you to perform an action which shows new elements like "click 'edit' button", "click 'add qualifier' button", "click add labels". NavinoEvans added a comment. @WMDE-leszek Thanks so much for taking a look at this! Yes, the issue you describe on step 8 in your example is the main problem to solve. To me the root of the issue is that the user is allowed to skip through steps //without// having actually completed the instructions. This means that the popup is trying to attach to an element that **is not visible** on the page. For this main issue, it seems that the only options are to either: 1. Complete each step for the user automatically if they have not done so themselves. This will insure that the relevant elements are visible at each step. OR 2. Prevent the user from skipping to the next step until they have completed the current step (e.g. by disabling the next button) Fixing with method 2 seems a lot simpler, albeit not as nice for the end user. --- I would also note that there is another issue that has been identified as a 'race condition'. This is what some of the previous fixes posted earlier in the thread are addressing. In this case, the element to attach to is visible but the somehow the popup is not still not attached. These are obviously connected but not the same problem. I have not experienced this second issue myself but others have reported it. I will do some further testing on this and post an example tomorrow with steps to reproduce.
