@manybubbles explained this to Bryan and I, and I'm going to attempt to explain
this as simply as I can:

This is step 1 of 3(?) toward arbitrary list transclusion
(https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T49930) on Wikipedia et all. This aspect of
it is basically the related changes bit that allows for proper purging (but
doesn't actually do it).

2015-12-02 Thread RobLa-WMF
RobLa-WMF added a subscriber: RobLa-WMF.
RobLa-WMF added a comment.

@ottomata: I don't know all of the details, but I think the ID idea is a good
one. One //possible hitch//: according to the W3C, URIs are supposed to be
opaque <http://www.w3.org/TR/webarch/#uri-opacity>. If you're using it as an
identifier, then it's a layer violation to //also// require the server to
provide data to the client via the URI.

I haven't studied your proposal closely enough to know if there's really a
problem here, and if there is, if it's worth avoiding. There's no sense in
overcomplicating things to satisfy some W3C orthodoxy here, but I know that
there are //some// cases where URI parsing causes tighter coupling than
necessary, so I figured I'd comment.

2015-12-10 Thread RobLa-WMF
RobLa-WMF added a comment.

I think there's a risk of second system syndrome
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mythical_Man-Month#The_second-system_effect>
here in the current proposal. I would start with the question "what's the most
important problem to solve with the current system?" My instinct is that we
can come up with a very simple system to solve @halfak's problem, possibly a
(hopefully temporary) "next gen" version that doesn't replace the old system at
first. We keep iteratively solving problems with the new system, and then when
the pain of maintaining two systems becomes too much, implement the old system
//on top// of the new system.

This doesn't seem clear to me, and I think I'm coming to agree with @gwicke's
comment https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T119029#1866851 that this is probably
not a good for the summit in its current form. That said, it would be very
disappointing to kick the can down the road for some more time.

@arielglenn, you wrote: "If you don't come, you'll wind up with the same old
Dumps 1.0!" Really? Do you have a concise answer for "if I were in charge, I
would solve X with Y?", for the following values of X?

- Format
- Incrementals
- Content
- Scalability
- Reliability
- Storage
- Downloading
- Maintainability

You also say "FOR CURRENT DISCUSSION" and then point to a giant wall of prose.
That doesn't look like a discussion to me. It looks like it might be time to
revisit @halfak's earlier comment, because that looks like the seeds of a
discussion that were killed early.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T134426: Review shared data namespace (tabular data) implementation

2016-06-05 Thread RobLa-WMF
RobLa-WMF added a comment.

This is a really cool idea, Yuri! Done correctly, this has the potential for
establishing a de facto standard for how one represents tabular data in JSON.

I'm assuming we're not the first people in the world that have thought of
representing tabular data as JSON. Just based on my very quick set of
searches, here's what I found:

  - https://www.w3.org/TR/csv2json/

That's not to say anything qualitative about those alternatives relative to
the format you propose; just my first impression of "stuff I should read" based
on a quick skim of this. Could you tell me more about your research?

The good news (for this) is that ".tab" doesn't have a mediatype associated
with it in the Apache mime.types file
<https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/httpd/httpd/trunk/docs/conf/mime.types>
(which is always the first place I look when I'm creating a new file
extension). The bad news is that the enwiki list of file formats
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_formats#Geographic_information_system>
does show that ".tab" is currently associated with MapInfo files
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MapInfo_TAB_format>. I don't think there's any
widely-recognized, open, official registry for file extensions (is there?), and
your proposal seems to have a more intuitive claim to ".tab".

It would be neat to enlist the people who are writing specs in this area to
help define the spec for our implementation. Is that something you can do,
Yuri?

@Daniel, my understanding from our previous conversations (and discussions
about a new column on the https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/archcom-rfc/
board) is that this is "on track". As of right now, you're not waiting on
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/archcom/ for approval before continuing
development (or understanding what next steps should be) and that everyone
(including https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/archcom/) is happy that
implementation is underway. Is that a fair characterization?

I realize that the blocking relationship is transitive, but given Otto's
comment (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T114443#2072426), it would seem that
it would be clearer to make the blocking relationship specific, rather than
obscuring it in a hierarchy. Would you mind if I put

I think this is a really good point; and generally, many of us probably need
to spend some quality time reading through @daniel wrote (I confess I haven't
done that yet). We'll almost certainly need to do something like what Yuri is
suggesting to have a sane import/export format. Daniel has clearly thought
about the dump format problem, so I wouldn't be surprised if the answer is
already spelled out above.

@Daniel, I suspect the bulk of the prose for this RFC should migrate to
mediawiki.org as we more seriously consider it. Is this something you are
planning on, or do you need help/buy-in/gnome-help in order to accomplish?

From E158: RFC Meeting: Architecture open office (2016-04-06,
#wikimedia-office) <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/E158>:

  > 21:08:06 <@bd808> I case anyone missed it, the first patch for the
dependency injection/service locator work was merged during the hackathon. :)

well -- https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/wmhack2016_DI
  > 21:10:35 * robla follows the link to skim the notes
  > 21:13:18 bd808: what is the general consensus on the RFC from what
you saw at the Hackathon? is it something that's effectively a done deal and
that ArchCom should just follow through on, or is there advice from ArchCom
that's still desired?
  > 21:13:57 I think it was all down to implementation details at this
point. @Daniel needs code review and +2s
  > 21:15:02 ok, good to know
  > 21:15:13 There are almost certainly going to be some things that
come up as usage expands. We may need some do & don't guildelines once we know
what to do or not do.

We discussed this in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/E171 today. Full
notes are https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/E171#2016

  The summary:

  > - question discussed: which backends should InterwikiLookup support?
(robla, 21:10:54)
  > - i imagine every wiki would read three files actually (and perform a deep
merge): one with info shared across the family, one with info shared accross
the laanguage, and one with local overrides for the specific wiki
(DanielK_WMDE, 21:22:54)
  > - aude: also can interwiki ids be renamed? daniel: you can add prefixes.
(DanielK_WMDE, 21:23:42)
  > - an entry can have multiple global ids. they act as aliases. only one of
them would be used as a key in the file, makign it the *canonical* global id.
(DanielK_WMDE, 21:24:05)
  > - another thing we should have is configuration for sorting order of
interwiki ids (maintained in a sane place) (DanielK_WMDE, 21:33:00)
  > - LINK:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Interwiki_config-sorting_order-native-languagename
 (aude, 21:33:23)
  > - LINK:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Interwiki_config-sorting_order-native-languagename-firstword
 (aude, 21:33:26)
  > - anyway, yes, the JSON format you propose looks very
extensible and will presumably meet our needs (DanielK_WMDE, 21:33:39)
  > - LINK:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Interwiki_config-sorting_order-native-languagename-firstword
 (DanielK_WMDE, 21:34:21)
  > - I don't want to have m:Interwiki_map anymore (DanielK_WMDE,
21:36:27)
  > - Tim is not convinced that interwiki info should be maintained by hand as
json. Perhaps we still want dumpInterwiki (or equivaloent) (DanielK_WMDE,
21:50:15)
  > - Tim thinks we need to figure out what information can be taken from
wgConf, and what should come from elsewhere, and how to maintain it. But it's
not a blocker for now, we can figure iot out later (DanielK_WMDE, 21:53:55)
  > - next week's meeting: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/E184 RFC:
Requirements for change propagation (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T102476)
 (robla, 21:57:21)
  > - Tim thinks it's ok to go ahead with implementing the proposed next steps,
as they are non-threatening. But should we have a formal last call?
(DanielK_WMDE, 22:02:40)

We agreed that there's no reason to go to last call, because we weren't
making a final decision.

mw:User:RobLa-WMF/T102476
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:RobLa-WMF/T102476>. The next step will be
to convert it into mw.org RFC format. RFCs with long prose seem better to have
over on mw.org, with a short description + link here on Phab; MediaWiki's
editing and diffing tools are better (yay you folks!)

The problem that @Jdlrobson correctly identified is that the discussion wasn't captured in a way that we can clearly refer back to it. An RFC is a great tool for that. An ArchCom session is merely a tool to help create a well-written RFC.

[Consensus in Lyon]: don't use the Web API interface and FauxRequests for internal requests. Reasons:

It's a "stringly typed" interface, it lacks type safety
the encoding/decoding is a performance issue.
it makes things very hard to test - it's an antithesis to the idea of injecting narrow, easy-to-mock interfaces.

Best practice IMHO: make business logic that does not know or care about UI or web API, write a thin layer of UI or API on top of it.

On 2016-09-05, @daniel moved the description of this task to mw:Multi-Content_Revisions That page now has many subpages, described in Daniel's recent email to wikitech-l

This is tentatively slated to be discussed in our ArchCom IRC meeting in a couple of weeks (E273, scheduled for 2016-09-21).

There's a lot to sift through. Daniel: a while back, you posted this list of questions:

Open questions:

Do we need to record the (primary) slots in th edatabase, so we can enumerate them reliably? Alternatively, we could ask all relevant services for all possible slots to get an enumeration.
Can primary content be stored outside the blob-store model? Related: should the slot table really have blob URLs?
Multiple "events" per revisions may be useful: each "like", each "view", each "comment", etc. "sub-revisions"?
Versioning for content models (wikibase model 0.1, 0.2, 1.0, 2.0; parsoid html 1.0, 1.1, 1.2...)
Drop content formats?
Slot content: use Content interface? More basic RevisionData interface? Or allow specialized interfaces, such as ParserOutput objects?
Optional meta-data associated with slots (etag, etc?)? with revisions (rev-props)? with blobs (hash, size)?

Are those still the key questions? Which ones have been answered?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T107595EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: brion, RobLa-WMFCc: Mholloway, Scott_WUaS, Niharika, MGChecker, LikeLifer, Elitre, Glaisher, JJMC89, RobLa-WMF, Yurik, ArielGlenn, APerson, TomT0m, Krenair, intracer, Tgr, Tobi_WMDE_SW, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, cscott, PleaseStand, awight, Ricordisamoa, GWicke, MarkTraceur, waldyrious, Legoktm, Aklapper, Jdforrester-WMF, Ltrlg, brion, Spage, MZMcBride, daniel, D3r1ck01, Izno, Luke081515, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, fbstj, Mbch331, Jay8g, bd808___

I think I agree with you, but you say this in a way that sounds dangerous.

The risk: the more that our data formats become a complex mystery that is only understood by a handful of people, the fewer people that will trust the systems we produce.

It's true that ideally, editors should not need to understand the underlying formats. We should create systems that are easy for both humans and computers to understand and manipulate. If we do this, we'll provide the ability to create user interfaces that behave intuitively. Advanced editors will learn the underlying model, and will be able to intuitively grasp the nature of the inevitable problems we'll have with the systems we build. They will also understand how to explain those problems to less advanced editors.

However, the more we try to hide the underlying storage format, the less that the most active editors will trust the systems we produce. Let's make sure that we come up with a system that is easy to explain what a revision is at the byte level.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T107595EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: brion, RobLa-WMFCc: Alsee, Pppery, Florian, Liuxinyu970226, WMDE-leszek, Mholloway, Scott_WUaS, Niharika, MGChecker, LikeLifer, Elitre, Glaisher, JJMC89, RobLa-WMF, Yurik, ArielGlenn, APerson, TomT0m, Krenair, intracer, Tgr, Tobi_WMDE_SW, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, cscott, PleaseStand, awight, Ricordisamoa, GWicke, MarkTraceur, waldyrious, Legoktm, Aklapper, Jdforrester-WMF, Ltrlg, brion, Spage, MZMcBride, daniel, D3r1ck01, Izno, Luke081515, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, fbstj, Mbch331, Jay8g, bd808___

Ah, yes, I agree. The structure of our content should be clearly defined and easy to grasp for interested people. That structure will become slightly more complex with MCR, since we add a level of indirection. On the plus side, the data formats used to represent things like categories or page assessments or license information will become a lot clearer and easier to understand and re-use.

Well, the "lot clearer" assertion remains to be seen. I think the current proposal still seems like an enormous change. Each of the use cases have had quite a bit of discussion, and has had quite a bit of investigation by the people proposing it. For example, changing the way that licensing and media metadata is stored is documented here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data

Many of the other use cases have similarly deep analysis with similarly long histories.

In general, the work that Daniel and many other people are doing at WMDE is work that affects core infrastructure, so there's not one single editing community we can ask. It also affects people outside the Wikimedia editing community. It has the same sort of complexity as interlanguage links had before Wikidata came along. Discussing it in the context of MediaWiki.org seems like a sensible place to put an RFC, and thus that's why we're discussing it here now.

Now, it would seem as though you are bringing this point up now because you're worried about making the system more complicated. Yes, that seems like a reasonable fear. A multi-slot "revision" seems similar to a file system fork, and will inevitably come with the same complexity. I'm eager to see how we make the case that this complexity is worth it.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T107595EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: brion, RobLa-WMFCc: Alsee, Pppery, Florian, Liuxinyu970226, WMDE-leszek, Mholloway, Scott_WUaS, Niharika, MGChecker, LikeLifer, Elitre, Glaisher, JJMC89, RobLa-WMF, Yurik, ArielGlenn, APerson, TomT0m, Krenair, intracer, Tgr, Tobi_WMDE_SW, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, cscott, PleaseStand, awight, Ricordisamoa, GWicke, MarkTraceur, waldyrious, Legoktm, Aklapper, Jdforrester-WMF, Ltrlg, brion, Spage, MZMcBride, daniel, D3r1ck01, Izno, Luke081515, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, fbstj, Mbch331, Jay8g, bd808___
