  Hi Everyone,

I'm starting this thread, based on prior discussions with both Peter and
Nellie about 'storytelling'.  I have tried to capture most of the previous
discussions in this summary email (points below).

We seem to have an emerging cluster and/ or project node, but it has been
buried in another discussion thread.  It has grown out of Peter's L4C K-12
training, a first for our WikiEducator community. In a previous post, Peter
  has said

  1. [H]aving middle school and high school students collaboratively
build OER would be an amazing thing. I'd hope we could get them
  building a complete K12 curriculum...

I was discussing this project last night with Brad (the middle school
director) and we are kicking around ideas for the theme of the content
we believe the students would like to develop. We are thinking about
local histories via story telling... We live on the west coast of BC
and have very rich aboriginal history here. If we could have the
students capture this along with some rich media we could build
something special. maybe we should consider a theme where we gather
rich media (photos, video, sound...) about the local geography and
local stories around the geography, meybe even start to look for
  similarities and diffrences...

  2. There is a a storytelling mini - conference scheduled for Nov. 7 -
 http://www.wikieducator.org/Storytelling/course_mini_conference/http://console.mxlogic.com/redir/?mjhOCyqekhNEVdIL6zBYQsCzAQsLCM0hyhm...

  3. I have received feedback from a local BC actor who's been in the
X-files, Stargate and is Metis I'm trying to draw him into WikiEd and
the discussion as there is a strong link between storytelling and acting.
Here's his feedback about storytelling and cultural identity:

I believe cultural identity is very important to a story teller, and their
ability to tell a story. The idea is to use those identity's as
foundations, then building from there to where culture is not the
main focus but the content of the story is.

  4. I've been in touch with Michael David, who is developing a project
focusing on storytelling for community radio. He is a journalist (there's
also a strong link between storytelling and journalism).

  5. We are working with several community media groups - Maraa and Masrah in
India, and Rupantar in Bangladesh that make considerable use of storytelling
to evoke participatory learning and understanding for social, economic and
  political change.

next phase of the Community Media space, as it relates to TV / Video (we are
currently focused on Community Radio -

  8. As mentioned in point #5, there is a strong connection between
storytelling as a means for evoking understanding, learning and action ~ and
there are many possibilities here spanning the globe from conflict
resolution, peacemaking, cultural identity-building, and sharing of
experiences, practices, and connections. I hope we can explore these in this
discussion, as well as develop collaborative projects under this 'umbrella'.

Looking forward to your thoughts, feedback!

[WikiEducator] Re: Storytelling cluster / project node

2008-10-28 Thread Randy Fisher
Hi Peter,

I just found this resource from my interests in community economic
development, tied to storytelling in Canadian northern communities.

http://www.ccednet-rcdec.ca/files/ccednet/Storytellers_Final.pdf

Storytellers' Foundation is based in the upper Skeena
River region in northwest BC. The region is home to 14
distinct communities all located on the traditional
territories of the Gitxsan First Nation approximately 300
kilometres inland from Prince Rupert on BC's northwest
coast. About 6,500 people live in two municipalities
(Hazelton and New Hazelton), seven reserves, two
non-incorporated settlements and three valle

The article identifies some of the initiatives connected to storytelling ~
interesting to know that this stuff exists.

[WikiEducator] Re: Storytelling cluster / project node

2008-10-19 Thread Maria Droujkova
I am interested in using storytelling for mathematics. There are some
classic stories such as Hotel Infinity - but the goal would be for each
person to create his or her own story about a topic. Here is a (very loose)
summary of my plans, so far:

- Either another human, or some software has to get people going, as far as
math is concerned. The software can take the form of interactive prompts
for each topic, based on prior mathematics education research of that
topic's metaphors. For example, prompts for proportionality may have to do
with uneven sharing (like pirates and the captain), or with body
proportions (Vitruvian man vs. anime characters). The software will use a
domain specific language to generate, basically, a mini-game that will serve
as a story prompt, scaffolding the math parts but soliciting open picture
and situation input from each user.
- There should be all the usual social web support for sharing, commenting,
expanding, embedding, ranking, tagging and so on of the resulting game and
story objects.
- There should be some way to expand metaphor collections for each topic,
which will involve some basic programming - this can be implemented either
by inviting everybody to program, or by inviting people to send suggestions
to a team of programmers

This is in the early research stages. I found people and software doing
vaguely similar things, but I have not started to write detailed component
descriptions.
