 to go there?

 According to my guidebook,
the bus to Teotihuacan departs every 15 minutes from
Autobuses del Norte. To get to the terminal, ride the Metro
Linea 3 from Hidalgo station and change at La Raza to
Linea 5, to Politecnico direction, and get off at Autobuses
 del Norte.

According to Subha from India (he already went there),
roundtrip bus between Teotihuacan costs 70 pesos.
My guidebook says it will take 1 hour from the bus terminal,
while Subha says 2 hours or so. The truth lies somewhere
 inbetween :-)
 Entrance fee is 57 pesos.
My guidebook suggests to have 3 to 4 hours for sightseeing,
as it is so large and air is thin.

If anybody wants to join me, please let me know.

P.S. I'd like to visit Biblioteca Vasconcelos if I have a chance.

In our case, they only wanted to see the balance, not the transaction
names. It will look odd but they're not interested in who you're paying,
only that you have the money to support the person being sent. Blacking out
all of the payee names should be quite simple if you print the statement
out and use a slip of paper to cover the payer column?

Re: [Wikimania-l] [Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2016 - Jury Announcement and Start of Bidding

2014-10-07 Thread Richard Symonds
With the greatest of respect, everyone, can we please remember that I'm
volunteering for this. I'm not paid to do it. It's out of my own time, the
sametime in which I edit Wikipedia. Who my employer is doesn't (and
shouldn't, in my opinion) enter into it. I don't have to volunteer for the
jury - I volunteer for another non-Wikimedia organisation who would love me
to spend 40+ hours with them instead. I volunteer for Wikimedia because I
have done so consistently for ten years - and I've only been employed by
them for three of those.

If you're worried that I will unfairly support the point of view of my
employer, I can assure you that that's not the case. The various jury
meetings are in camera, so my employer doesn't get to find out what my
opinion on these things are, and they can't censure me for it. And I do
disagree with my employer on certain things - and my employer respects my
right to disagree with them. They're a pretty decent employer like that.

It feels a little bit like I'm being referred to as a second class
volunteer. I know that isn't the case - but it feels that way, It feels a
little bit like my volunteer hours are worth less than everyone else's just
because of who pays my salary.

I do understand where you're coming from - but we don't judge other
people's ability to volunteer based on who pays their salaries. Nor do we
assume that I am a 'paid Wikipedia editor'... because I'm not! I'm a
volunteer...

Ellie,

I don't think We have a system that works for jury selection is
appropriate answer. I just asked how and by who, not but it strange for me
that this simple question is been unanswered.

Adding to my first email, now that I familiar more with the jury members -
from one hand I'm happy to see know we have a great and talented jury, but
from second hand, a little bit strange feeling that the jury members of the
major and the biggest community event within our movement are paid staff
from wmf/chapters. I see our staff as an integral part of the movement, but
still - we don't have any committee, especially when we are talking about
Wikimania, that staff are such a major part of the committee.

So yes, this just reinforces the fact that requires a bit more detailed
answer to the question - how they are selected.

Thank you, and thanks for all the people that volunteered for this year
jury.

Re: [Wikimania-l] New member signups at Wikimania

2014-08-18 Thread Richard Symonds
Andres,

These are questions we get asked a fair bit. The answers are on our FAQ
page, at
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Volunteers_-_Frequently_Asked_Questions -
it's a little complicated, but essentially members can vote to elect the
board of Wikimedia UK, and they act to hold trustees to account. There are
a few hundred members of Wikimedia UK at the moment. Membership is open to
all; you do not have to live in the UK, be over a certain age or be editors
of any of the Wikimedia Foundation projects. All we ask is that members
agree to support our Objects (https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Objects#Objects)
and not to bring Wikimedia UK into disrepute. In terms of time, membership
takes up maybe an hour or two per year - although it can take up more if
you want to be more active.

You can join at
https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1id=4 -
let katie.c...@wikimedia.org.uk know if you have any private questions!

 Hi Andy,

I don't know the total, and we may not have finalised things yet as we
are still recruiting from people who got involved at Wikimania and are now
working out how to stay involved. The two I have personally signed up were
both immediately after Wikimania. I assume you are interested in the whole
Wikimania related spike, not just those we collared in the barbican?

I can see that this is going to be of interest to both this list,
especially the Mexico bid team, and of course the Wikimedia UK list. It
would also be interesting to get feedback from earlier wikimania teams as
 to what worked for them.

As well as many regulars, Wikimania 2014 attracted a large and
enthusiastic group of additional volunteers who we have an opportunity to
try and engage with. Apparently most of them were in a particular Facebook
group and we have already reached out to them there with invitations to
both an Editathon and a campus ambassador training session. We will be
doing more plugs there for WLM etc, any experience from previous
 wikimanias
or indeed Facebook campaigners gratefully received.

for future Wikimanias to come. I know that it's a tough asked, but here at
we've proved that anything is possible when people come together to help
 out.

Also, in thinking about it, I also have some takeaways that also apply not
just to wikimedia, but to everything in life:

Takeaway number 1: Be excellent to each other. (Yes, I realise that this
is a Bill and Ted reference).
Takeaway number 2: Encourage positivity and kill off negativity.
Takeaway number 3: If you have an idea, don't just think about it. Plan it
 out and do it.

I look forward to hearing about your takeaways from Wikimania 2014.

[Wikimania-l] Flags!

2014-08-11 Thread Richard Symonds
Hi all!

Both the Wikimania flags are missing. The poles have come back, but not the
flag itself! We wanted to get one of these signed by everyone who helped
with Wikimania and display it in the UK office so we are a bit sad that
they're missing. They probably vanished in the final drunken packing last
night.

I'm sure there was no ill intent, but if anyone knows where one of them is,
please drop me an email - or put it in the post to FREEPOST WIKIPEDIA and
we'll pay the postage.

No questions asked!

The page already exist on google plus not that I'm saying it should be

By the way, this isn't convincing as well.

Plus would not be a waste. Do you have figures for the number of people in
the community that use Google Plus and are not on any other information
channel, including the mailing list? I suspect that the number is extremely
 low, possibly zero.

Spending time on something solely because it is there makes very little
sense. Instead of trying to cover a large number of platforms, we should be
covering the ones people actually use and deleting accounts on the ones
that aren't in use, so that people migrate to the active forums.

In an effort to be accommodating, we have spread ourselves too thin, and
information has fallen through the cracks. When it comes to information
channels, we need to shift from quantity to quality.

Its likely obvious it needs someone to contribute to. I'm sure the
current managers of the page are die hard twitter and Facebook users. Thus
o believe bringing die hard Google plus users to manage the page will also
 help.

If I can assist in this way, I'll be glad to. I only have my official

processors, then most merchants displaying that logo should be able to
accept it, even if their transactions use a credit function rather than the

The problem is that in many continental European countries,
MasterCard/Visa cards with 16-digit numbers etc are things that most people

I've always been baffled by how hesitant UK-based individuals and

Re: [Wikimania-l] Child care

2014-02-28 Thread Richard Symonds
I think if there was a minimum level of demand, then it's something that
could be considered. However, this is the first time that it's been raised
regarding Wikimania 2014, so a decisions would have to be taken based on
the level of demand. It would be terrible for inclusivity if a large number
of parents couldn't attend because of childcare issues. I have cced in
Stuart Prior who is the UK Wikimania Liaison - please let him know if this
is something that you would use.

Re: [Wikimania-l] UK Visa Bond

2013-06-27 Thread Richard Symonds
Indeed, this hasn't made the news very much in the UK, and I can't find any
mention of it on government websites... My understanding is that, under the
plans, high risk (and first time) entrants from particular countries will
need to pay a bond/surety in order to enter. However, the UK government is
currently a slightly shaky coalition - very unusual for British politics -
and it appears that this policy is being reconsidered, after the minority
party in the coalition raised concerns. See
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/jun/25/nick-clegg-visa-bond-theresa-may for
more - the entire plan may well be scrapped, or the fee dropped to a
sensible level. London is a very diverse city - my local area has Bengali
as a first language (about 80% speak it) - and so understandably this
policy is not very popular in the capital.

The bid team (who are independent from, but friendly with, Wikimedia UK)
are working closely with London Partners, who are the official tourist
agency for London. LP deal in part with fast-tracking visa applicants from
around the world to bring them to major UK events - LP are very, very keen
on bringing Wikipedia to London, and they have the backing of the UK
government to do so. They already have the connections and the experience
needed to make this happen - they did it for the Olympics and other major
events, and I am certain they will do it for Wikimania if they have to.

Sufficed to say that although we can't *promise* anything - I can assure
you that the bid team will do everything they can feasibly do to help bring
people to London. I will bring this up with the bid co-ordinators when next
I meet them.

The government intends to run a pilot scheme for such bonds, tightly
targeted at a small number of visa applicants assessed to pose a high
 risk of overstaying.

That suggests that they'll only ask for a bond from people that are
from those countries *and* are deemed to be high-risk, not from
everyone from those countries. I would guess that in the current
system (without bonds), these people would be very likely to have
 their visa denied anyway.

That said, the news articles I've read about this aren't very clear,
which suggests the government hasn't been very clear about what its
 plans are.

Re: [Wikimania-l] Just to clarify

2012-08-26 Thread Richard Symonds
I'd just like to back Chris up on this, as Wikimedia UK's 'Finance Man',
for want of a better word. We're tasked with coming up with an activity
plan to be agreed on September 8 this year. We've been asking the community
to come up with various ideas, for a fully volunteer-driven plan. You can
see these ideas - some of them very crazy - at
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/2013_Activity_Plan/Ideas. I for one suggested
a six-month Free Content Canal Barge to travel around the UK. Others have
suggested new skins for Wikipedia, a photo-scanning centre, a 'donate your
content when you die' legally binding will - lots of very exciting ideas!
Sufficed to say, not all of them are sensible, and not all of them are
workable - but they're all very individualistic and represent the very best
of crowdsourcing ideas.

When we came up with the 'basic plan' in the WMUK office, we had to come up
with something that seemed relatively sensible to spark off ideas for the
community to work off. Part of that was myself and the Chief Exec throwing
out 'ballpark figures' for the WMUK membership and the WMUK board to
discuss. One of those ballpark figures was £40k for the UK if it wins a
Wikimania 2014 bid, or alternatively putting £40k towards the 2014
Wikimania wherever it may be - in the form of travel grants, a better
venue, better accommodation or something similar. As Chris says, our
Financial Year is February-January, so we have to plan for what would
happen if the community's (and it is community led - see
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2014_bids/London) London Bid is
successful.

What I'm saying, is that this budget is a *work in progress*, and it's one
that we want the wider community - and the WMUK membership - to lead on. If
you don't think that planning a £40k spend on a confirmed 2014 bid is a
good idea, then say so, but please propose something else! Perhaps there's
an opportunity for a joint UK-Danish project to cover the Faroe and
Shetland Islands - or a joint WMUK-DE-RU project to cover 'Peace and
Reconciliation' - as the cities of Coventry, Dresden and Volgograd
(Stalingrad) were some of the first 'twin cities' in existence.

All the best,

Just to clarify Wikimedia UK's position regarding Wikimania 2014.

So far the Wikimedia UK board has made no decisions and received no
proposals regarding Wikimania 2014 - spending money on it or otherwise.

What we do have is a section in the current draft of the 2013 activity
plan suggesting allocating £40,000 for Wikimania 2014. This draft is
currently up for community consultation before we discuss it at our
September board meeting. As a result of the discussion there we will
develop a proposal to vote on, and whatever is accepted, we will then send
to the FDC; how the FDC will respond, no-one knows. Then when we know the
FDC's opinion, we will have another version, and then when the fundraiser
out-turn is known in January there will be a further iteration before our
actual 2013 budget is finalised. So there is plenty of work left to do on
this. What's more, since our financial year runs from February and bid
selection is in April it's inevitable that most of any budget allocation we
make for Wikimania would be for *after* a successful bid, rather than
 before it.

While I can understand why this it a topic of interest, I'm not sure
there is any need to get worked up about it. We make a conscious effort to
do our planning as openly as possible, and share early drafts of documents
with the community for input. We are also unable to reject proposals that
have not yet been made. Please think carefully about whether shouting at us
as a result is a good idea ;-)

Personally I hope that we end up with a very strong, volunteer-led,
London bid which will be successful and that Wikimedia UK will be able to
support Wikimania 2014 in every way possible - but there is still a very
 long way to go yet.

 Many thanks,

The issue is that the hard drive may not actually be connected: we've
spotted a crack on the bottom of the laptop, and think that the hard drive
may have disconnected, ie, become unplugged, from the rest of the laptop
as a result of that. Installing anything won't be possible until we can get
something running to find out if the hard drive is broken, or just
unplugged.

I'm running some tools on it at the moment to see if something fixes it.

some people don't want to join extra new lists and I think also don't

Re: [Wikimania-l] Ohio or Wisconsin lift

2012-07-03 Thread Richard Symonds
Crossing Missouri by Amtrak is an experience! Staff are wonderful, but the
passenger train stops for freight trains, and most stations don't have
platforms. They do have power outlets though, and it's a bit of an
adventure.

Better than taking the Greyhound :-)

If you don't find a ride, I would heartily endorse Amtrak. There are
few services left these days that are truly customer-oriented and easy to
deal with; Amtrak is one. You can change travel plans last minute-no
problem and no fees. You can usually get a cash refund for 90% as long as
you haven't begun travel. You can get partial refunds, if you take part of
the trip and want to cancel the rest. The people are super-helpful. The
food in the dining car is good to great. They really match the comfort
level of the cars for the length of the trip.

There main issues are spotty national coverage and, out west, they get
poor scheduling on the lines. But heading towards Chicago from the east
coast is Amtrak at its strongest. D.C. to Chicago is an 18 hour overnight
trip which is arranged to end up in Chicago around 9 AM. You could get off
in Ohio in the wee hours travel through Chicago to WI. Chicago is the Rome
of Amtrak. I rode NYC to Chicago last year and all overnights in the East
get the same type of cars. The seats basically become lounge chairs with
full leg support. There are lots of outlets but probably no wi-fi on that
trip. Cell service will be spotty as you travel through stretches of
 countryside that are lightly populated.

If you take Amtrak, try asking the conductor if any accommodations are
available when they collects you ticket. It is bucket pricing, so it is
too late to book them at the a good price. But if they don't book them or
someone who did book misses the train, I have heard that the conductor will
sell them at the lowest bucket (it is based on miles). Accommodations are
more than just a private sleeping compartment. They will come with meals
included, plus the sleeping car has showers. Quality showers. It is well
worth the upgrade at the lowest bucket price.
