2019-11-09 Thread Su-Laine Brodsky
I agree the main campuses of UBC and SFU are too far away from downtown and
from accommodations.

UBC Robson Square might be big enough:
https://robsonsquare.ubc.ca/event-conference-planning/

Other downtown options could be SFU’s downtown buildings, or BCIT’s downtown
campus. See http://www.sfu.ca/mecs/vancouver-main.html and
https://www.bcit.ca/rentals/downtown.shtml . SFU’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for
Dialog is an incredible space aesthetically - I’m not sure if has enough of the
right-sized rooms though.

Is there a list of the requirements, e.g. “at least one room that will fit 300
people and five other spaces that will hold 30 people each” kind of thing?

How many people "on the ground" do you think it requires? How big is
 this year's conference?

[Wikimedia Cascadia] Vancouver meetup at QE Park, August 4

2019-07-30 Thread Su-Laine Brodsky
Hi everyone,

(cross-posted to Cascadian and Canadian Wikipedia mailing lists)

An August long weekend get together is on, this Sunday from 10 to noon! We will
meet at the designated picnic area at the north end of Queen Elizabeth Park,
where the picnic table icon appears on this map:
https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/queen-elizabeth-park-map(1).pdf . If you'd like
to bring some snacks to share, that would be lovely. If not, don’t worry about
it.

Everyone is welcome in accordance with the standard WMF Friendly Space Policy
(https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Friendly_space_policy). Hope to see you
there.

Cheers,

You can do that with the “Event Coordinator” rights. You can apply here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_permissions/Event_coordinator
or ask any admin to give you the rights.

One thing you can do with Event Coordinator rights is give other uses
“Confirmed” status. At the beginning of an edit-a-thon I pass around a sign-up
sheet and have everyone write down their username, then when I have time I make
them all Confirmed. That makes things go more smoothly for them.

[Wikimedia Cascadia] Vancouver, BC meetup on June 9

2019-04-23 Thread Su-Laine Brodsky
Hi everyone,

Five terrific Wikipedians made it to last April’s meetup in Vancouver. We had a
good informal gathering, and we would like to meet more regularly. The next
Vancouver meetup will be on Sunday, June 9. We will meet at 10 AM at Kafka's
Coffee and Tea, 2525 Main Street. I hope to see you there.

Jean-Philippe, if you could please put this on the Wikimedia Canada calendar,
that would be great.

[Wikimedia Cascadia] Vancouver, BC meetup on April 14

2019-04-03 Thread Su-Laine Brodsky
Hi everyone,

I’m organizing an informal get-together in Vancouver for Sunday, April 14. It’s
been a very long time since our last one.

We’ll meet at 10 AM at 49th Parallel Coffee, which is at 2902 Main Street
(https://www.yelp.ca/biz/49th-parallel-coffee-vancouver-3). There’s no
particular topic or agenda. I'm doing some research about Wikipedia group
dynamics and would like to chat about your editing experiences, if anyone wants
to share. If you can’t make it but can get together some other time, please let
me know.

Hope to see some of you there :)
