Re: [Wikimedia-l] Interest in a community strategic planning meeting?
Hi all, OK, I've been reading this plus the emails that I got off-list. It seems that there are a lot of diverse ideas and priorities, and probably the best way to gather and prioritize them is through a strategic planning process somewhat like what WMF and the community did in the last time around. I'm not sensing a lot of appetite for strategic change that involves moving away from the WMF hosting model, although am sensing interest in ongoing conversations with WMF about expectations for how WMF behaves toward the community especially around software deployments, and interest in a number of other Meta-level issues. As probably could be expected, a lot of people say I'm upset about X or I want to change Y but the level of interest in walking through the steps that it takes to actually do something about X or Y beyond talking about them is limited to a relatively small number of people. I want to thank those who spoke up and hope that everyone stays active in the already underway WMF-led strategic planning process as that goes forward, and that we keep our ideas ready for when the right time comes to provide input into that process. Thanks again. This is of course not the end of the discussion about strategic issues, so please continue talking if you wish. (: Pine On Mon, Jul 14, 2014 at 10:58 AM, Marc A. Collecting the world's knowledge and making it available only has value insofar as it is, in fact, used as such. The servers running, the editors editing, the coders coding are all necessary components but all, in the end, subservient to the actual objective of serving the readers. Everything else is replacable. In my long stint on the meta-side of the biggest project (and keeping abreast of what goes on elsewhere) I saw a very great deal of self-important navel gazing, but very little actual consideration that the community (if there is such a thing) is only a means to the actual end. The WMF certainly does not do everything perfectly, but at the very least it actually /attempts/ to keep an eye on the prize. -- Marc ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe
[Wikimedia-l] Underwater photos and videos / WMRS Microgrants 2014
For the last month or so I want to share with you the initial success of the Microgrants 2014 project of Wikimedia Serbia. However, there are a number of stories and it was too much to me to write about all of them at once. So, I am splitting it, which means that you can expect more stories during the next days. Inside of this email, first a bit about the project Microgrants, then about the particular project. * * * In brief, the goals of WMRS Microgrants project is to build capacities of Wikimedia Serbia and to make WMRS more visible. Projects themselves are of secondary importance. The idea is to engage individuals and organizations in creation free content, as well as to find active volunteers inside of that pool. Although there are many possible cool ideas, I didn't want to base the project on something unpredictable, but on more or less predictable parameters. For example, if we get ~10 more active Wikimedians thanks to that project, it would be success. However, it turns out that some of my wet dreams have become reality :D My unexpressed idea was that if we reach relevant population, we'll get some very cool projects. The initial budget for all projects was 2500 EUR. Thanks to WMRS Board and staff, that budget raised for, AFAIK, ~2000 EUR, so all relevant projects got funding (which was between 400 and 500 per project). * * * This email is about the coolest project which we got. (However, there are other projects, even more significant than this one. This one is just the coolest :D ) It's about recording underwater world of Drina River [1]. So, yes, we'll get photos and videos of underwater species. Two persons who are doing that are called Liquid Art [2]. Please, take a look at their materials. One of very important conclusions about the work with them is that one of my premises turns out to be true. They are artists. They are living of making artistic movies about underwater worlds. They needed just co-funding (500 EUR) and they will give us all materials relevant to us, for educational purposes. They will create movies, make other steps to compile them into artistic experience, and that material is their, proprietary. However, educational materials will be copylefted. But, that's not the end of the story... We were actually lucky to start this project with them. They are in Serbia (in Novi Sad) just because their ship is docked in Caribbean to be repaired. Oh, and they didn't want to go to make underwater photos of Caribbean, but underwater photos and videos of the Southern Ocean, Antarctica. They have other materials, as well as they are making underwater photos all over the world. Their destinations for the next year are Thailand and Antarctica. After they come back from their Drina expedition, we are going to talk about liberating their older materials. Basically, those people are living from their work, but they have enough space to contribute to the free content corpus, as well as they are willing to do so. And I am sure that there are many such people all over the world. * * * Obviously, I'd like to see other affiliate organizations doing similar things. At some point of time I'll write a know-how for making that kind of projects. In the meantime, feel free to approach me via email or ask the questions here, so everybody would be able to read and participate. * * * [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drina [2] https://liquid-art.net/ (some of their material is locked, as they didn't publish those videos yet; narration of their movies is in Serbian, but I am sure that we can convince them to make English versions, as well :) ) ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe
Re: [Wikimedia-l] Community RfCs about MediaViewer
Hi all, I am willing to support a more detailed RfC policy that describes where and how notices should be distributed for different kinds of RfCs, although for the MV RfC I feel notice was adequate and there was lots of opportunity for anyone who felt that notice was inadequate, including WMF, to say so or boldly distribute notice more widely during the month that the RfC was open. I am not of a mind to reopen this RfC, but again, very willing to support a more detailed RfC policy for future events. Hi Erlend, Have you filed a request on bugzilla yet? That would generally be the right place for all technical config requests (or issues you run into). [Wikimedia-l] Dec/2013 Deccan Herald, Press Release/Nilkanth Sah Paddaam, Belgaum.
Dec/2013 Deccan Herald, Press Release/Nilkanth Sah Paddaam, Belgaum. Velim, 11 kilometers from Margao, South Goa. Dec. 21st 2013. Mr.Venkatesha A. Upadhiaya today submitted a memorandum to the President of India Mr.Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Mr.Manmohan Singh and Mr. Pravin Srivastava of Archeological Survey of India ASI, demanded to immediately acquire and save the 12th century, Kadamba Jayakeshi Southern Capital Velimpura site which is also the cremation ground of the last Ruler of Hangal located in present day Velim, South Goa ‘a place of National Interest’ from the possession of Mrs Ana Emerita, widow of a great Goan, late Roqiue Santana charging her for constructing on the scared grounds, denying access by locking the compound gates and playing regional card with the pilgrims from the neighboring villages of Karnataka who visit Velim once a year, a centuries old practice and as part of the Banavasi festival celebrations to pay their respect to the 1368AD Velimpura cremation ground of Purandarai-Deva the ruler of Hangal. Warning the locals who were present here today not to be silent spectators to injustice done to the glorious historical past Mr. Upadhiaya a native of Belgaum lamented while reacting to regionalism that prior to his death in 2007 Roqiue Santana like his father in Portuguese colonial times always gave a warm welcome and supply of drinking water as a gesture of respect to the Kannada visitors at the site. Roqiue Santana popularly known as Father of Goa’s Democracy was the local elected representative to liberated Goa legislative Assembly. “No doubt this family is Goan, like thousands of Goans they are of Deccan origin too”. Mr. Upadhiaya said. Earlier, a man who walked up behind the secured gates calling himself the security for the Roqiue Santana family charged last years pilgrims of criminal mischief, theft and robbery as important antiques went missing following last Dec. pilgrims visit and said that the family has moved out of this country and ordered the driver of the tour bus to get going. Leading the pilgrims Mr. Upadhiaya 82, denied the allegation here today in Velim saying that we are always protective of the family and do respect their privacy and recollected his family’s ancestors ties as ‘Sarva-Karyakartas’ meaning chief secretary, a hereditary appointment up to the time when Governor of Madras presidency George Harris under Lord Dalhousie administration confiscated the Haliyal Timber and Construction Lime Co. goods of Roqiue Santan’s greatgrand father in Nov of 1855. Mr. Upadhiaya held that most of the pilgrims are the descendants of the family’s Haliyal compound work force. Historians hold that Haliyal yard was basically Goa ruling Reigns Armoury and is today converted into Haliyal Bus Terminal. In his memorandum he urged Archeological Survey Of India (ASI) to atleast save this Velim landmark for future generations. According to this famous historical source held sacred by Hangal Coterie, Purandarai ruler of Hangal and family on the eve of his fall in 1347 secretly traveled over night to joined his daughter who herself took shelter in safer Jayakeshi Velimpura compound in 1345 when her husband was assassinated by Mohammedans at present day Chandor. A second wall stone Kannada inscription dated 1396 in the Velim compound marks the death and cremation of Veenomai-Devi beauty and wife of Suriya-Deva, slain Sovereign at Chandrapur palace, daughter of Late Purandaraideva, Kadambarasa of Hangal confirms this history. It can be infered from the Velim inscription that Goa Kadamba Suriya-Deva son of Beera, was married to the nearby royal bride who was his distance cousin. Mr. Upadhiaya said. Before adopting Portuguese Catholicism this Velimpura family’s ancestors had given up worship in their temples for fear of Mohammedan trap, reinvented themselves as Haliyal timber lords where converted by Orthodox Nasranis of Malabar in early1400’s. Some of the Syrian origin worship items and anointing oil alabastrons saved by Upadhiaya’s great grand father and moved to Belgaum after the 1855 British confiscation of Haliyal compound is convincing evidence. Further, quoting Kannada stone inscriptions on Konkan sea pirate Timu “enemy turned friend” recovered from present day Haliyal Bus stand tell that Timu in those crucial years provided protection for their ancestors in return for timber for his shipbuilding needs had exploited this converts fear issue and used Portuguese forces to drive Mohammedans away and enforced his Timu administration in Goa in 1510. The Portuguese in a while overpowered Timu and colonized Goa. It is a well known historical conclusion that this Christian connection attracted early Jesuits including Francis Xavier to visit Velimpura first for refreshment before traveling inland for conversions, he added. Prof. Nilkanth Sah Paddaam in this press release said here today that a
