Re: [Wikimedia-l] Google returning outdated text snippet

2016-08-07 Thread Pax Ahimsa Gethen
I did already contact Google about this issue, but I will try again. As
I mentioned though, their cache of the Gender page is up to date (August
1); it's just the text snippet preview (from May 26) that is wrong. And
this problem was previously corrected (after I first contacted Google)
before resurfacing, so this strikes me as a strange issue.

This is not, at its root, a Wikipedia problem. Google has bots scanning
our articles on a near-constant basis, as well, but they don't scan
everything in real time. I have seen very good results using this process,
often within the hour.

Thanks for the news, Ido. I have heard many good comments about the
Wikipedia Education Program in Israel, and it's nice to see that the
program is expanding. It's also good to see the program build bridges
across languages.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Kevin Gorman has passed away

2016-08-07 Thread Kalliope Tsouroupidou
Of little interest perhaps, but Kevin's profile appeared on my LinkedIn's
"People you may know" page (as did another recently deceased ex-WMF
staffer's). I reached out to LinkedIn directly, filling in their deceased
members form so that remove or mark the profile as deceased (different
networks handle this type of request differently). From past experience,
often the family of the deceased is too overwhelmed to deal with their
loved one's online profiles and are grateful if others 'take care' of that.

Something to consider if you come across other online profiles of Kevin.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Israel received a grant to work with Arabic speaking gifted students

2016-08-07 Thread ido ivri
Hi all,

We are pleased to announce that Wikimedia Israel received a grant from an
Israeli Charitable Foundation to replicate its successful program of
working with gifted students on the Hebrew Wikipedia, and expand it to
gifted Arabic speaking students in Israel to edit Arabic Wikipedia.

We're excited by the opportunity to support work in more languages spoken
in Israel, as well as expand our reach to new audiences.

In preparation for this grant, Wikimedia Israel team has performed some
exploratory work in an Arabic speaking school in Israel for the past year,
and translated the instructional materials to Arabic. This great work has
been carried on by Shay Katz and Dror Kamir (respectively), and we want to
take this opportunity to thank them. Last but not least, we want to thank
Michal who made it through some pretty stressful deadlines for writing and
submitting the request.
