[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation Board Recruitment: Updates

2017-11-29 Thread Nataliia Tymkiv
Dear all,

The Board Governance Committee (BGC) has been working on finalizing another
potential candidate [1]. The results of the process were successful and the
Board has unanimously appointed the candidate the BGC has recommended. The
announcement is planned for December 1, 2017, so in two days the Wikimedia
Foundation Board will be finally complete (ten members).

But the Board recruitment is actually not over: we have two appointed Board
members, whose terms expire next Wikimania - Kelly Battles and Alice
Wiegand - so we are going to start working on filling those seats. The
ideal timeline is to have potential candidates join us in time for
Wikimania 2018.

The Board Governance Committee and I personally are thankful to those
people who were highly involved in the Board recruitment process: Anna
Stillwell, Michelle Paulson and Michelle Muñoz, our Legal and
Communications teams, and of course Katherine Maher. And many, many more.

Robert Fernandez thinks it is "remarkably inappopriate" to put the

Signpost. No. This is a quotation, which perhaps he did not recognise, from
a rather long-standing and well-known essay,

If CC-0 licensing allows for commercial use -

could (CC) Bookstores, for example, use this CC-0 licensing, in all 295 of

[Wikimedia-l] An answer to Lydia Pintscher regarding its considerations on Wikidata and CC-0

2017-11-29 Thread Mathieu Stumpf Guntz
Saluton ĉiuj,

I forward here the message I initially posted on the Meta Tremendous
Wiktionary User Group talk page
,
because I'm interested to have a wider feedback of the community on this
point. Whether you think that my view is completely misguided or that I
might have a few relevant points, I'm extremely interested to know it,
so please be bold.

Before you consider digging further in this reading, keep in mind that I
stay convinced that Wikidata is a wonderful project and I wish it a
bright future full of even more amazing things than what it already
brung so far. My sole concern is really a license issue.

Bellow is a copy/paste of the above linked message:

Thank you Lydia Pintscher
 for
taking the time to answer. Unfortunately this answer

miss too many important points to solve all concerns which have been raised.

Notably, there is still no beginning of hint in it about where the
decision of using CC0 exclusively for Wikidata came from. But as this
inquiry on the topic

advance, an answer is emerging from it. It seems that Wikidata choice
toward CC0 was heavily influenced by Denny Vrandečić, who – to make it
short – is now working in the Google Knowledge Graph team. Also it worth
noting that Google funded a quarter of the initial development work.
Another quarter came from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation,
established by Intel co-founder. And half the money came from Microsoft
co-founder Paul Allen's Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2)[1]
.
To state it shortly in a conspirational fashion, Wikidata is the puppet
trojan horse of big tech hegemonic companies into the realm of
Wikimedia. For a less tragic, more argumentative version, please see the
research project (work in progress, only chapter 1 is in good enough
shape, and it's only available in French so far). Some proofs that this
claim is completely wrong are welcome, as it would be great that in fact
that was the community that was the driving force behind this single
license choice and that it is the best choice for its future, not the
future of giant tech companies. This would be a great contribution to
bring such a happy light on this subject, so we can all let this issue
alone and go back contributing in more interesting topics.

Now let's examine the thoughts proposed by Lydia.

Wikidata is here to give more people more access to more knowledge.
So far, it makes it matches Wikimedia movement stated goal.
This means we want our data to be used as widely as possible.
Sure, as long as it rhymes with equity. As in /Our strategic
direction: Service and //*Equity*/

.
Just like we want freedom for everybody as widely as possible. That
is, starting where it confirms each others freedom. Because under
this level, freedom of one is murder and slavery of others.
CC-0 is one step towards that.
That's a thesis, you can propose to defend it but no one have to
agree without some convincing proof.
Data is different from many other things we produce in Wikimedia in that
it is aggregated, combined, mashed-up, filtered, and so on much more
extensively.
No it's not. From a data processing point of view, everything is
data. Whether it's stored in a wikisyntax, in a relational database
or engraved in stone only have a commodity side effect. Whether it's
a random stream of bit generated by a dumb chipset or some encoded
prose of Shakespeare make no difference. So from this point of view,
no, what Wikidata store is not different from what is produced
anywhere else in Wikimedia projects.
Sure, the way it's structured does extremely ease many things. But
this is not because it's data, when elsewhere there would be no
data. It's because it enforce data to be stored in a way that ease
aggregation, combination, mashing-up, filtering and so on.

Our data lives from being able to write queries over millions of
statements, putting it into a mobile app, visualizing parts of it on a
map and much more.
Sure. It also lives from being curated from millions[2]

of benevolent contributors, or it would be just a useless pile of
random bytes.
This means, if we require attributi

ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli made recordings of his speaking voice in
English and his native Italian, as part of the 'Voice Intro Project'.

[Wikimedia-l] First content made for Wikipedia in space!

2017-11-29 Thread Andy Mabbett
As some of you may have seen on social media already, the first ever
content made specifically for Wikipedia, in space, was uploaded to
Commons today, and is now in use on Wikipedia articles.

ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli made recordings of his speaking voice in
English and his native Italian, as part of the 'Voice Intro Project'.

I wrote a blog post about how this came to happen, for the WMF blog:

https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/11/29/astronaut-spoken-voice/

If you have a social media account, you might like to retweet me:

or share the Wikipedia Facebook page's post:

or of course post in your own words, with the hashtag #WikiVIP

And remember, please, to ask other people who have Wikipedia
biographies, or an item on Wikidata, to record their voice, as
described at:

First of all note that I appreciate r.e.b's contributions and thank him for
them.

That put aside: that article is clearly marked as "humour" based on the URL.
Should it still be taken seriously? Furthermore, how much do Signpost humour
articles reflect the official stance of the Wikimedia Foundation? Finally, note
that it is expected that one's work will face some criticism, either valid or
false, and one should learn to cope with it. I've written about it here -
http://shlomifishswiki.branchable.com/Encourage_criticism_and_try_to_get_offended/
and here -
http://shlomifishswiki.branchable.com/Never_Try_to_Please_Everyone/ .

I'm not saying that signpost piece is commendable, but it should be taken in
proportion.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference 2018: Registration now open

2017-11-29 Thread Daniela Gentner
Dear Wikimedians,

We are delighted to announce that the registration for the Wikimedia
Conference 2018 [1], which will be held in Berlin from Friday, April
20, through Sunday, April 22, is now open!

Following Abraham’s invitation, we would like to provide you with
important information regarding the eligibility for participation,
participant number regulation, registration procedure, specifics in
regards to the travel and hotel booking as well as the visa
application process.

==Eligibility criteria and participant number regulation==

The eligibility criteria for participating in the Wikimedia Conference
2018 are aligned to the Affiliates’ Agreements with the Wikimedia
Foundation. Chapters, Thematic Organizations and User Groups must have
shown signs of recent activity (within the last six months as of
September 30, 2017) and be up-to-date on their reporting [2] by the
eligibility deadline (December 15, 2017). Moreover, affiliations need
to have been officially recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation before
January 1, 2017. Before registering for the conference, please check
the eligibility and status overview of your affiliate as well as the
participant number regulation on meta [3].

==Registration information==

To make the conference a success, it will be essential for the invited
affiliates to deliberately choose their delegates. Affiliates are
asked to only send delegates that are well-informed in goings-on at
the affiliate, able to confidently answer questions about it and share
experience from their group. They should also be empowered to commit
their group to involvement in proposed projects or initiatives. We
recommend to follow the “How to select the delegates” information,
which is published on meta [4].

People, who are selected by their organization to represent them at
the conference, need to register via the registration form [5]. The
registration deadline is Monday at midnight CET, January 15, 2018.
Please note that we won’t be able to accept and process registrations
after this deadline.

We are looking forward to also welcoming members of the Wikimedia
Foundation Board of Trustees and staff, the Funds Dissemination
Committee as well as the Affiliations Committee in Berlin. We see a
huge advantage in having their representatives participate on site.
Please also register via the registration link [5].

In addition to the core-conference, pre-conference Learning Days on
Wednesday and Thursday, April 18+19, are organized by the WMF Learning
and Evaluation team [6]. There is also a Boards Training Workshop [7]
organized by Frans Grijzenhout (chair of Wikimedia Nederland) and
Tim-Moritz Hector (chair of Wikimedia Deutschland), which will
simultaneously take place on April 18 and 19. Should you be interested
in participating in either of the two pre-conference offers, you can
indicate your interest in the registration form.

Based on our positive experience from 2017, there will again be a
chance to directly connect newcomers (who never attended the Wikimedia
Conference before) and experienced participants (who visited the
Wikimedia Conference in Berlin > 1 times) in the so called Buddy
Project [8]. Our aim is that through this offer everyone can make the
most of their experience and take as many impressions, contacts, ideas
and inspirations home with them as possible. If you would like to take
part in the Buddy Project, please specify in the registration form
whether you would like to take part as a newcomer or experienced
participant.

For the purpose of helping affiliates to check that only their
selected representatives have registered and enable participants to
connect before the conference and stay involved afterwards, we will
publish all participants’ names on the meta page [9] shortly after
registration.

Further information on the registration process can be retrieved from meta [10].

==Hotel and travel booking==

The Wikimedia Conference will take place at the Mercure Hotel Berlin
Tempelhof Airport [11] in Berlin’s neighbourhood Neukölln. A high
number of hotel rooms, which are conveniently located on the levels
above the conference venue, have been reserved for the conference
participants. All rooms include Wifi, breakfast and have their own
bathroom.

Representatives of affiliates with an annual plan grant (group 1) will
need to book and pay for their hotel rooms as well as travel
individually. The hotel booking form and price information can be
found on meta [12].

Affiliates, which don’t receive funding via an annual plan grant
(group 2), will be supported by WMDE for their hotel needs and travel
booking.

Members of the WMF Board, FDC, AffCom or WMF staff (group 3) receive
travel and hotel booking support by the WMF travel department.

As for additional participants specifically invited by the Program and
Engagement Coordinator to complement the conference program (group 4),
WMDE will assist you with your hotel and travel booking.

We advise you to check meta [3] to which gro
