[Wikimedia-l] Re: The new Signpost is out!

2022-10-04 Thread Wikipedysta Nadzik
If we are looking for a good multi-language solution that avoids
English-only usage, I would like to propose utilising Movement Strategy
Forum <https://forum.movement-strategy.org/> [1]. It is available to any
Wikimedia user (it uses Wikimedia SUL as a login) and can be read even by
unlogged users. Its star feature is multi-language capability, a
translation extension that allows each user to write in its own language
and have their entries automatically translated into languages used by
other users. One newsletter ("Updates from the Communities
<https://forum.movement-strategy.org/t/updates-from-the-communities-weekly-newsletter/1411>")
written by the WMF's Advancement Department is already being shared there
since August 2022 [2] (in addition to being published on Facebook).

Movement Strategy and Governance team working in the Wikimedia Foundation
has been running the Forum (disclaimer: I work part-time as a member of
this team) since spring of this year (Report for the Proposal Review Period
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Strategy/Forum/Community_Review_Report>
is available on Meta [3]). MS Forum allows users from all communities to
share information about their activities and projects. It has a lower entry
barrier, as it does not require English proficiency to participate in
global discussions. It is also easier to join for newcomers than Meta,
which may be a tough place to enter at the beginning.

I welcome everyone to visit the Forum and read about Movement Strategy
developments and projects in communities that some of us may have never
heard from before. They are there, talking to the Movement in English and
many more languages.

Cheers!

There will always be mails that some people will not be interested in. Often
most of them. This does not mean that they are not relevant to the list. We can
delete them without reading them if they are not relevant to us.

Hi Gerard (and everyone else) -

I join with others in saying that links to other newsletters published on
our various projects, and in various languages, would be a really valuable
addition to this list. Many of us would really like to learn about what
different projects consider to be important. I'd really like to encourage
that other newsletter links be posted on this list.

2022-10-03 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
The problem with the arguments made in the Signpost is that they represent
English Wikipedia and adhere to what some consider what the pov of
Wikipedia should be. As a pov it is fine but I do consider it not a
publication that is representative. As such I do not need the
advertisements for its publication.
Thanks,

While the Signpost is hosted on the English Wikipedia and started as very
much an EN Wiki venture, it aspires to be of more general interest. Looking
at that specific issue, yes there is much that is mainly English Wikipedia
focused, including a small contribution of mine. But some of the content,
such as about the WMF elections is of general community interest, and at
least one story is about Wikimedia Commons rather than Wikipedia.

2022-10-01 Thread Tilman Bayer
Hallo Gerard,

der Signpost ist schon seit langer Zeit nicht mehr thematisch auf die
englischsprachige Wikipedia beschränkt, wie du zum Bespiel auf
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Signpost nachlesen kannst ("Temas:
Movimiento Wikimedia, Wikipedia, comunidad de Wikipedia y Fundación
Wikimedia"). Er wurde deswegen bereits vor über einem Jahrzehnt von "The
Wikipedia Signpost" in "The Signpost" umbenannt.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: The new Signpost is out!

2022-10-01 Thread effe iets anders
Given how few community driven publications there are in our universe, I
actually appreciate these announcement emails. They are pretty sparse and
seem to often contain relevant content to the wider Wikimedia community
too. If it were a daily publication, I would probably feel differently
about this.

Best,
Lodewijk

Hoi,
De Signpost is een publicatie van de Engelse Wikipedia. Waarom wordt de
Wikimedia mailing list daarmee lastig gevallen?
Vriendelijke groet,
