2011-02-24 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
Let us hope that this is not such a one.

What if this is actually meant for our Sanskrit Wikipedia ? Or possibly we
convince them it is worth for developing the existing Sanskrit Wikipedia ?

Let us not jump into conclusions and let us hear from the person who have
been invited today by Arunram.

( Another reason why people should be attending the Bangalore meetup today

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] ToI front page: Rs 1 cr for Sanskrit WP

2011-02-24 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
Sanskrit Bharathi volunteers were generally keen on our Sanskrit Wikipedia.
Arunram and others have conducted Wiki academies for them. Probably good
idea to take them more into confidence with our movement.

While Kerala & TN governments have chosen to go with the Wikipedia, it is
sad that Karnataka government is always trying to reinvent the wheel. May
be we are not reaching out with them properly.

It may be a good idea to set up a Chapter task force for government liaisons
and policy making, which includes those folks who have done these kind of
stuff successfully more than those who have contacts.

May be it can be used for releasing the content and images under

The government usually prefers a project with editing control rather
than one without any direct control over content decisions made.

Personally, I'd be careful not to jump to conclusions just because they've
used the word "Wikipedia" in the announcement.

Two years back, the budget said "Rs XYZ Crores for Wikipedia in Kannada" and
that turned out to be for a project the government wanted to do "on the
lines of" Kannada Wikipedia, but one that had full editing control. They did
not even know that there was an already existing Kannada Wikipedia. The
project was later named "KaNaja" (http://kanaja.in).

[Wikimediaindia-l] The Narayam extension

2011-02-24 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
I am really happy to announce that the Narayam extension is installed and
running at translatewiki.net. Currently it provides input methods for the
Malayalam and Bangla languages. It has been enabled so that Narayam can be
tested both for its functionality and for these input methods. We expect
that many more languages need support for the input methods for their
language. As Narayam is intended as a framework solution, it will allow for
a solution that can easily extended.

The status of the software is "functional" but it needs more tender loving
care from Junaid PV and other developers to before it is ready for the
Wikimedia Foundation. When you want support for an input method for your
language, please contact Shiju Alex who manages this project.

As always, we welcome it when you localise this and other software at
translatewiki.net.. :)
Thanks,
   GerardM
