There is one thing that is required for other wikipedias to use the same.
ShortURL[1] is required for sharing on twitter. The development is
done(Thanks Yuvi!) and its sitting for review. I know there is a
significant interest for getting the extension deployed among Indic wikis,
but this bug is sitting there for quite a long time. I have poked the bug
enough number of times, please feel to comment spam the bug[2] for it to
get some attention and/or add a vote. The bug is on its way to 6th
birthday and lets hope it gets closed soon.

As such numerical analysis on the usage of social media is not black and
white. For WikiConference, Tamil Contest and others we do all kind of PR,
so we cannot bucket the page views, but social media does play a key role.

On a slightly related note(unrelated to social media, but related to
numbers) of campaign tracking, am looking to gather numbers for the
SiteNotice campaign atleast and have talked to Howie Fung during the
Hackathon for some improvements in SiteNotice mechanisms taking inputs from
Fundraising team. I hope we will work on it sooner. For people who are not
aware, extensive analysis goes behind the fundraising and they gather
numbers on many things(from clicks to actual payments) to see which
campaigns are effective and use them.

Hi all,

Just as we started the Tamil Wiki Media Contest[1], we have realized the
power of social media[2] and virality. In an attempt to increase page views
even by single digits and having more visibility for content pages, I was
looking around and found the share gadget on Hebrew wikipedia and have

[Wikimediaindia-l] Sharing insights and experiences from Indian language wiki communities - Marathi

2011-12-08 Thread Shiju Alex
Dear All,

As part of my discussions with Indic language Wikipedians I spoke with few
Marathi wikimedians (Abhay, Mahitgar, and Mandar) also. All of them are
highly experinced wikimedians. They their editing experiences, their vision
about ml wiki projects, and other related topics. I have summarized the
discussions in meta wiki.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs/Indic_Languages/Marathi/Discussions/2011

For the past few years I got the opportunity to interact and with
highly experienced wikimedians of Marathi wikipedia like Abhay, Mahitgar,
and Sankalp. The ideas they had shared about Indic wikis had defintely
helped when Indic wikipedians came together for some of the common
projects.

The focus that Marathi wikipedians given to mediawiki translation at
Translate wiki had inspired many other Indic language wikipedians. Many of
them contributed to the interface translation of Hindi and Sanskrit wikis
also.

Right now Marathi wikipedia has close to 35,000 articles, and about 40
active editors.

During and beyond WikiConference, it has been really inspiring to see the
increase in the activity levels across many communities in the country. In
particular, Marathi community have been exploring opportunities and
formulating plans to drive community growth and project quality.
WikiConference gave a big boost to the Marathi community because of the
increased profile of the projects, especially the press. To illustrate,
between September and October 2011, the number of active editors increased
from 31 to 40. It will be really important to keep us this momentum and to
translate this into sustained community building for a small but vibrant
community.

Community is working very hard to make Wikisource a reality for Marathi.
Hope that will happen soon.

I am personally very optimistic that Marathi is at an inflection point -
and this the right time to make concerted efforts at community building to
realize this opportunity.

Kindly read the experience of Marathi Wikimedians at:

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Internal-l] Community Fellowships open call

2011-12-08 Thread Béria Lima
Well, is on the page: "*A fellowship is a temporary position at the
Wikimedia Foundation in order to work on a specific project or set of
projects. Fellowships can be awarded for periods as short as 2 months and
as long as 12 months. Duration is determined by the scope of the fellow's
project.*"

Being a "Community" Fellow means that your project falls into the Community
Department of WMF.

In a nutshell: If anyone wants to apply for, they need a project to help
the community (not necessary to be the Global one) until 15 Jan and this
project need to be approved by WMF.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikipedia-l] Creation of new language - Ahirani

2011-12-08 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
It would be cool when the request for the Ahirani language is completed.
What is necessary is information of the "proposer" and people interested in
working on this language.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Ahirani

In the mean time I have written a "Mingle story" asking for the support for
the Ahirani language. The request is to have a configuration *exactly* like
Marathi for WebFonts and Narayam. It will likely take three weeks before
this is implemented on the Incubator. Before this we will have it
implemented on translatewiki.net.

When it has been implemented at twn, we want to get confirmation that it is
as it needs to be. Having a "language support team" for Ahirani (and any
other language) really helps.

Thanks,
  Gerard
