[Wikimediaindia-l] Announcing Noopur Raval as Consultant, Wikimedia Foundation (India Program, Communications)
Dear All, I am pleased to announce that Noopur Raval ([User:Noopur28] has been selected as Consultant to the Wikimedia Foundation, and will support Communications for India Program. This position will perform 4 key functions. Firstly, it will support communications with our community. This involves a regular set of updates (such as newsletters) as well as specific communication projects such as story-telling of local community initiatives (to document experiences, celebrate successes and cross-pollinate ideas.) This is not for day-to-day program communications - which is a core part of each of our responsibilities in the India Program team. Second will be to support media PR for local community initiatives. The single biggest challenge here will to be get more Indic language media coverage to support community building efforts. This will be done directly with community members and also in co-ordination with the India Chapter's Communications Media PR team. The third aspect is to build and expand existing community social networks (such as WikimediaIndia on facebook) and to help with the use of social networks to support community building. Lastly, there is untapped potential of using digital outreach - to augment existing physical outreach efforts. We need to (very, very carefully) explore if we can reach out to our large and growing reader base and inform, encourage and enable them to become editors using online channels and resources. Noopur is a community member and has supported outreach activities (in Ahmedabad Delhi), is a member of Delhi SIG of the Chapter, has participated in community collaborations like Collaboration of the Month and has been actively trying to start GLAM in India. Noopur is from Gandhinagar and is graduating from JNU with a Master's in Arts Aesthetics. She has a triple honors Bachelor's in Media Studies, Literature and Psychology from Christ College, Bangalore. She has interned with Radio Mirchi, Times of India and the Centre for Internet Society (amongst others) - as well as done some teaching assignments. She is an active blogger (including for the India Art Summit, 2011.) She has published a novella and co-authored an anthology of poems, plays short stories and has co-presented a paper on Wikiwars with [User:Srikeit.] She is also an amateur photographer and has contributed to Commons as well as other platforms. The Communications position has taken a long time to fill. The initial call for selection was in September. I reported back to the community in December that I had failed to find the right candidate and hence the delay. There were a number of deserving candidates and this selection has taken time because of the need to find the most suitable profile for a complex role. This role requires the right mix of an academic foundation in communications, domain expertise as well as adequate familiarity with our community. It also requires adaptability and strong learning skills - because so much of what we are trying to do is pioneering. I am confident that she brings the right level of experience and competencies - and I'm very excited by the opportunity of making a step jump in the impact of communications for our community. Do join me in welcoming Noopur. She will start on March 12 and will be based in New Delhi. [Wikimediaindia-l] status WLM-India
Hi all, I'm glad to see so much activity ongoing on this list! For those that do not know me: I'm Lodewijk from the Netherlands, and I'm (amongst other things) one of the people coordinating the Wiki Loves Monuments initiatives on an international level. I have been involved in the 2010 contest in the Netherlands and the 2011 in Europe. I the past there have been some discussions on whether India would be willing and able to join Wiki Loves Monuments this year. Is there any update on this? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012_in_India shows quite a big number of involved volunteers, so that is exciting! Especially of interest may be the suggested timeline we have put up on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Timeline and which you could copy and localize (and adapt). It gives a good impression of the work ahead and what probably should take priority. Some relevant points would definitely be: * What is the status of the monument lists? Are they available, well structured and already on the wiki? * How many items do you have? To have a successful contest, there should be quite some monuments in every major city so that everyone can easily find a monument nearby where they live. That helps to decrease the threshold. At the same time, every monument needs to have a certain level of relevance of course. * Are you in contact with the relevant government authorities (that make decisions on whether a monument will be listed or not etc., but also who promote heritage in your country if there is such an organization. Possibly tourist boards.). * Will you be able to organize this at all in the whole of India, or is it only likely to succeed in a few states. I think a good project in some states is more important than a bad project in the whole country. Finally, we would like to offer our help where-ever possible. If you have your discussions on the wlm-in mailing list ( http://lists.wmnederland.nl/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/wlm-in) then I can also participate in discussions where relevant. Also, if that would be helpful we could perhaps think about organizing a brainstorm session/workshop in India with the volunteers interested in organizing the contest. If there is any other way you think we could be helpful, such as contacts with supragovernmental organizations, please let us know! I'm looking forward to an update and hope for a lot of enthusiasm! Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Sanskrit, scripts and Wikisource
Hi, Is it possible to select other scripts other than devnagiri or brahmi on user level? I know some sanskrit but i'm more comfortable with malayalam script :-). Such an option will be an added advantage for many people like me. I've seen many sanskrit texts (usually with malayalam translation or detailing) using malayalam script. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Sanskrit, scripts and Wikisource
Hoi, To be honest, I know that you can identify a language and a font to go with it. What I have to ask is how to identify Sanskrit with the Malayalam script because technically it is the only correct thing to do. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [wlm-in] Fwd: [Wikimedia-asia-chapters] Wiki Loves Monuments (again)
Hey Lodewijk, I think that's where our private conversation stopped too. We are not sure if there is a wider definition of monuments that can provide us more than 3000. Though we are trying to get one. I am copying this conversation to India community also since many may not have joined this list. Regards Noopur PS. Those interested in Wiki loves monuments, please do join this list so we can avoid cross posting. 2012/3/5 Lodewijk Gelauff lodew...@wmnederland.nl Hi Pradeep, thanks for bringing this on here! Just my two cents and I'll be quiet again: I think that a list of 3000 is very small for a country the size of India. For comparison: in the Netherlands we use lists the size of 60.000. We have a population of 17 million. Now you don't need to go thát big, but you need a certain size to make things work otherwise the monuments are just too big and too far away for people to photograph. It would perhaps be good to mention that you shouldn't expect to get a photo of every monument. We covered roughly 10-15% of the monuments only in one contest. There is no shame at all for not being complete at the end, it is just a work in progress. More opportunities just makes it easier for people to participate - and that is the main goal, to get people participate in an easy and constructive way. Creating the lists is more work of course with more monuments, but if you can get a database from the relevant (state?) governments, that would be possible to automate.
