Just to summarize, we had a wonderful discussion with English and Indic
Wikipedians  (from 6 Indic languages - as, bn, ml, ne,or and ta) regarding
the different ways in which they have been using social media platforms so
far to spread awareness about their Wiki projects. We also spoke about how
one can engage new editors, how language on Facebook groups differs, the
challenges people have been facing so far. The real challenge would be to
retain these editors and motivate them to edit based on their interest.
Will keep you updated as we try more things.

Let's keep this conversation going and discuss more regularly on how each
group is progressing. I'd be happy to help. Please don't hesitate to email
me.

talks and tutorials and miniconferences!  The CfP mentions specifically

as web development, mobile, privacy, and other topics.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India Chapter : Feb-May,2012 Report

Dear all,

Greetings from Wikimedia India !

We sincerely regret the lack of communication in the past few months (last
communication was in Feb 2012), though we had few IRC sessions. We thank
you for your patience.
Organisational Updates

Chapter audit including the accounts of WCI 2011 are in progress. Income
tax department has responded to our income tax exemption (12A registration)
application and requested for additional information. Chapter will be
filing the same shortly.

Ec has drafted Election rules to put in place the defined mechanism for
conducting EC member elections, EC office bearer elections and also other
official appointments of the chapter. We will be sharing this with members
and community for feedback.

*Membership:*
Membership renewals and fresh memberships are under process. We expect to
complete the backlog with in a week. Membership at the end of Mar 31, 2011
was 197. We request all members who have not yet sent in their renewal
applications and fee to do the same so as to reach Chapter office on or
before 30 June 2012 which marks end of grace period for renewal.And we also
welcome Wikimedians to join the chapter.

*Donations:*
Total Donations at the end of Mar 31, 2011 was Rs 19701/-

*FCRA:* FCRA approval was received. We have received a sum of approx 6.5
lakhs from Wikimedia Foundation in April 2012. We have spent Rs 37550/-
towards WikiSangamotsav.

*Internet Relay Chat(IRCs):*
We had one Chapter SIG IRC 4th May 2012, in which events, membership
renewal and grants were discussed.

*Board Meetings:*
We had eight meetings, including one face to face meeting in the last four
months. We met with Hisham and Barry and had discussions on the plans of
India programs.

*WikiConference 2011*
We made good progress on the scrutiny of WikiConference Mumbai 2011
accounts. We expect to submit the documents to the auditor in 1-2 weeks.

*Colloboation with India programs team* Though considerable effort was
spent by Wikimedia Chapter EC, Hisham, Barry and others towards defining a
colloboration framework, we could not reach consensus as the approaches
differ. Chapter will continue to cooperate with India programs in an ad
hoc, case-by-case manner.

Just to update this list, simple wiki community has opposed this. The
current votes stand at 6 opposes and 3 support with 1 editor waiting to
confirm his vote.

I had a good conversation about this yesterday with Frank on wiki and Rob
on IRC. I trust and respect Frank - he knows the education program and the
community better than anyone. I got a different impression from them, they
seemed open to working on this and coming up with a good solution agreeable
to all parties- like this wasn't a done deal. I trust both of them will do
the right thing in the interest of the community.

I did however get a different impression from reading the most recent
comments in Nitika's table on Wiki. So, I would like to state this - I
consider myself part of simple wiki community, I have edited there for a
while last year and know a few of the editors. I will not let this be
pushed without their support and approval. There has been a few ideas
kicking around Meta, a cross-wiki arbcom has been discussed for a while. If
need be I will create it on Meta or locally, or find another way, just to
deny this being pushed and not let the community be undermined.

I greatly respect Frank and know he will not let it come down to that, but
just in case anyone on the india side thinks, this will happen without the
community on simple wiki - they would be wrong. They have to convince the
simple wiki community first, they will not be circumvented.

I can talk from personal experience. I was one of the first people to start
adding coordinates to  articles of Indian places, sometime around 2007/8
when wikiproject geographical coordinates started picking up steam. There
were lot of villages in Tamil Nadu, where I blindly picked the location
shown on google maps (as there really was no other source at that time).
After an initial mapping spree, I gave up on the task because it was too
tedious at that time. This is roughly the same time I discovered the
openstreetmap project and realized my mistake with copying blindly from
existing maps.

The coordinates I had added may have possibly been incorrect (I really dont
know and there was no way for me to verify them). But by now the error has
already gone back into google maps and the position stands validated
because its the same coords on wikipedia.

Imagine the irony if map services with the correct position is now seen as
being inaccurate because wikipedia states otherwise. Just like article
citations, even coordinates must have some indication of the source. The
current system is just faulty.

What are the odds that the Google coordinates on Wiki are complety out
of place? I know that quite often it is incorrect, but I trust
Wikipedians to have a sense me judgement that tells them what is
actually correct.

Umm no, you could get coordinates however you want, but from what i've seen
people tend to rely blindly on google because its the least effort.

Ultimately, users contributing coordinates need to make sure that the
coords they are adding is accurate. The assumption that google maps is a
trusted map source is highly problematic. I just randomly checked the
coords for an article - Puzhal [1], a suburb of Chennai. The coordinates in
the article exactly match the the location in gmaps. How did that happen?

Anyone trying to verify the accuracy of coordinates in wikipedia will find
that gmaps shows the exact same position. Its a feedback loop which
validates errors thrown into it. Not good.

Ravi, the Simple English wikipedia has one of the lowest visibility
rates for a Wikipedia, atleast to Indian readers, from my experience.
As Theo stated, if anyone screws up, there will be noone to complain
or monitor it. Maybe then, they'd call it a success. I think I should
start there now.

Arun, is it necessary that I have to use Google map for finding the
coordinates? The last few times, I added coordinates to Wikipedia, I
got the coordinates which were present on OSM and Twitter for
BlackBerry, nether of which rely on Google
