In an effort to form a stable WMIN working environment and utilize the
community’s experience in terms of guidance, the EC, has decided to form an
 *Advisory
Committee Board*. Since the past EC was already working on it, as a new
EC, it’s our duty to take it forward.

Since, we want to include all the domains of work that are associated
with the working of WMIN, we propose different verticals under which the
advisory committee would advise the EC -

- Law,
- Organizational Development,
- Technology,
- Policy making,
- Outreach and
- Others (Open to suggestions from the community)

The function of the Advisory committee board will be to advise the
Wikimedia India chapter EC in its strategic decision-making process. They
will be providing the EC with appropriate suggestions and solutions towards
queries and solicitations specifically asked for.

It shall not be a part of the final decisions and resolutions adopted by
the Board. In general, the Advisory Committee members may remain for an
 indefinite term.

Since we want to take the inputs from the community, we would want the
community to suggest inputs on the following functions of this Advisory
 Committee -

- Role of Advisory committee
- Strength of the Advisory Committee
- Code of Conduct to Advisory committee
- Code of Conduct to Advisory committee

Apart from this, we would also like suggestions from the community on the
Possible inclusion to this Important Committee.

The new EC looks forward to full support from the Community.

 Thanks.

 Priyanka Tiwari

Dear Board members of Wikimedia India,

I am a member of Wiki Loves Earth international team, and I am
contacting you concerning the winners of Wiki Loves Earth in India.

The issue is that we are going to submit all national winners of Wiki
Loves Earth to the international jury pretty soon (approximately 10-15
September), and we still have no information about winners from India
(winners from other countries can be found here:
 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Finalists
 ).
At the moment India is the only country without any activity: among
countries without list of winners there the Netherlands already have a list
of winners but just don't want to publish it, while Ghana already has an
active jury and will have their top-10 photos in just a few days.

Unfortunately, both organisers of WLE in India (
 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014_in_India )
seem to be inactive at the moment, and Clockery (main organiser) seems to
be a 14-year old girl who is busy at school and who can use only her
mother's computer, thus we are not sure she had really contacted anyone to
 form the Indian jury.

Could you please do any of the following:
 * try to reach any of local organisers (Clockery or Manojk) and help
them reaching jury members and organising top 10 selection. I do not know
if you have any contacts of these users however - they have not responded
to our emails, and I am not sure they are more active on their home wikis...
 * find some people to form an Indian jury yourselves and submit top-10
Indian photos for the international contest. Given that India is already
very late, you can form a jury of virtually anyone who can evaluate quality
of pictures (even a group of chapter members would be fine)
 * if you are lacking jury members - we may try to find some people to
help you (e.g. we can ask some Commons administrators or active
photographers who are not participating in the international jury). But
please write us as soon as possible if you will need some additional people
 for the Indian jury.

In any case we hope that you will be able to submit winners pretty soon
(you have just 526 photos, not that great deal) - in at most a week, until
15 September - otherwise we may have to proceed without Indian images,
which will mean Indians will not be able to be in the international top.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

 Best regards,
 Mykola Kozlenko (User:NickK)

Dear Board members of Wikimedia India,

I am a member of Wiki Loves Earth international team, and I am
contacting you concerning the winners of Wiki Loves Earth in India.

The issue is that we are going to submit all national winners of
Wiki Loves Earth to the international jury pretty soon (approximately
 10-15
September), and we still have no information about winners from India
(winners from other countries can be found here:
 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Finalists
  ).
At the moment India is the only country without any activity: among
countries without list of winners there the Netherlands already have
 a list
of winners but just don't want to publish it, while Ghana already has
 an
active jury and will have their top-10 photos in just a few days.

Unfortunately, both organisers of WLE in India (
 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014_in_India
  )
seem to be inactive at the moment, and Clockery (main organiser)
 seems to
be a 14-year old girl who is busy at school and who can use only her
mother's computer, thus we are not sure she had really contacted
 anyone to
 form the Indian jury.

Could you please do any of the following:
 * try to reach any of local organisers (Clockery or Manojk) and
help them reaching jury members and organising top 10 selection. I do
 not
know if you have any contacts of these users however - they have not
responded to our emails, and I am not sure they are more active on
 their
 home wikis...
 * find some people to form an Indian jury yourselves and submit
top-10 Indian photos for the international contest. Given that India
 is
already very late, you can form a jury of virtually anyone who can
 evaluate
quality of pictures (even a group of chapter members would be fine)
 * if you are lacking jury members - we may try to find some people
to help you (e.g. we can ask some Commons administrators or active
photographers who are not participating in the international jury).
 But
please write us as soon as possible

 Hey,

We just concluded a week long Tamil Wikipedia outreach in Srilanka.

April 25 - Seminar on free content, creative commons and Tamil Wikipedia
organized by Noolaham foundation (meaning the Library foundation that works
for documenting Srilankan Tamil knowledge resoureces), Colombo. Students
from the Engineering faculty of Moratuwa University participated. The
discussion was also slightly off-beat as we discussed how transparency and
community building is done in Tamil Wikipedia and how it could be applied
to similar non-profit and volunteer based projects. Details and pictures at
 http://ta.wikipedia.org/s/2swy

April 26 - Tamil Wikipedia introduction at National Arts and Literature
front, Colombo. Details and pictures at http://ta.wikipedia.org/s/2qdq

April 29 - Tamil Wikipedia introduction for students of Jaffna
University's campus at Vavuniya city. Details and pictures at
 http://ta.wikipedia.org/s/2rk9 .

Besides this, few of us also participated in the Tamil Documentation
conference held during April 27, 28 and spread the news about Tamil
Wikipedia projects among the various scholars who came for the conference.

An informal discussion was also held with the members of Noolaham
 foundation on ways to colloborate.

A huge share of contributions to Tamil Wikipedia comes from Tamils in
Srilanka and their diaspora. In this context, I find these meetings
important and hope to see increased activity from this region in the
 future.

 Dear all,

 host Wikimania in 2014.

 The twelve members will be:

 * Deror Avi - [[User:Deror avi]] from Israel (Wikimania 2011 General
 Manager)
 * Philippe Beaudette - [[User:Philippe (WMF)]] from the US (Wikimedia
 Foundation Director, Community Advocacy)
 * Jeromy-Yu Chan - [[User:Yuyu]] from HK (Wikimania 2013

 * Shujen Chang - [[User:Shujenchang]] from HK
 * Florence Devouard - [[User:Anthere]] from France

 Deputy Program Chair)
 * James Hare - [[User:Harej]] from the US (Wikimania 2012 Co-chair)
 * Achal Prabhala - [[User:Aprabhala]] from India - Wikimedia Advisory
 Board member
 * Konarak Ratnakar - [[User:Kondicherry]] from India
 * Noopur Raval - [[User:Noopur28]] from India
 * Manuel Schneider - [[User:80686]] from Austria (Wikimedia
 Österreich; perpetual Wikimania organiser)
 * [[User:Whiteghost.ink]] from Australia

Jan-Bart de Vreede and Sam Klein (of the Wikimedia Foundation Board)
will also be part of the Jury, as normal.

I and Phoebe Ayers - [[User:Phoebe]] - will be serving as moderators,
neutral aides for the Jury who do not vote.

To re-iterate what we've said before, it would be lovely if this was
the last year we used this process, and that for 2015 onwards we could
create a new, community-led and more open and transparent process.
Some earlier discussions took place at [[m:Talk:Wikimania Advisory
Group]]. Please feel free to give your thoughts there.

As a reminder, bids have two weeks (until 23:59 UTC on 3 March 2013)
until bidding creation closes. All cities which intend to run for the
bidding process should have created a page on meta and entered the
 official list by this point.

Thank you, and good luck to all Bids.

nominate themselves to serve on the CIS's A2K Programme Director
recruitment committee. This programme will hopefully receive large
grant from Wikimedia Foundation and we would greatly benefit from
community input during the hiring process of the new Programme
 Director.

The volunteer must be experienced Wikipedian, based in India [ as we
cannot afford international travel for the interviews] and must have
sufficient managerial experience [including experience with conducting
interviews]. The volunteer should be able to spare time in September
to review applications remotely and also conduct face-to-face
interviews for 2 days either in Bangalore or Delhi.

Those who fit the description are requested to nominate yourself by
sending me an email with a profile and relevant URLs before COB 25th
 August 2012.

I will publish a long list on cis-india.org on 29th August, after
removing those nominations that don't have the required
qualifications. The volunteer to serve on the recruitment committee
will be selected from the long list by using IETF's Publicly
Verifiable Nominations Committee (NomCom) Random Selection[1].

The other members of this recruitment committee will consist of
 1. One of the existing independent consultants [Hisham, Nitika,
 Noopur, Shiju or Subha]
 2. One member from the Wikipedia Chapter (Wikimedia India Program
Trust) community. To be nominated by the Chapter Executive Committee.
 3. Executive Director of CIS - me.

The recruitment committee will be responsible for screening the long
list of eligible applications and conducting one-on-one face-to-face
interviews with the short list of applicants.

 Best wishes,

 Sunil

2012-05-28 Thread Adethya Sudarsanan
Dear Gautham,

Thanks for your response!! :) Am so glad that some one responded.

Well, As i mentioned previously, I don't want to mention the names of those
I e-mailed.

As far as the issue - to put it plainly, I developed an idea to improve
educational sector using social media. But now I find that some
organization has adopted the similar methodology. I was just concerned to
know if the idea was taken from me. I am stating that my idea was stolen,
but I have my doubts.

I was confused over the commons license, and so I e-mailed active people
in the list. But there was no response.

For some reasons, I was afraid to bring the issue to the lists, so mailed
some members about it.

It is indeed unfortunate that you feel someone stole your idea, but the
bright side is that if this idea is something that can benefit the
community at large and help improve the education in the country, then the
real winner is our economy :)

I am curious about the creative commons connection though. did you publish
your idea somewhere under a cc-by-sa license? If you can share what exactly
the license issue is, I would be happy to help, since I have dealt with a
lot of copyright violations of my own work.

Well, it's entirely possible that they had the idea too, no? None of
us have a monopoly on ideas and sometimes, more than one person has
the same or similar idea at the same time. It's happened before.

I was confused over the commons license, and so I e-mailed active

Maybe you should have tried the Creative Commons mailing lists? Or
even posted her to ask for a general call for help. If nothing else,

 Thank you.

 Hello everyone,

I am so pleased to announce that Wikimedia Bangladesh, with the help of
Independent University, Bangladesh, Chittagong, and Bangladesh Open
 Source
Network, organized the first Bangla Wikipedia Unconference 2012 [1] in
Chittagong [2] to promote Bangla Wikipedia [3] in Bangladesh. This
 outreach
event was held in 2 and 3 of March and was attended by around 300
participants. It was first big-level program of Wikimedia Bangladesh
 and it
was outside of the Dhaka (the capital) to focus on country-wide
 outreach.
We called it an unconference to give it a less formal look and to make
 the appearance more welcoming.

This two days event was inaugurated by the Chittagong City Mayor and
 and in
the last it was attended by the Since and Technology minister of
 Bangladesh
Government. It was also attended by some other popular public figures,
writers, and university professors, and media personalties. During the
unconference we had events like workshops, photo exhibition, cultural
program, seminars, article writing contest, etc. We had several teams
 from
the schools, colleges, and universities in Chittagong as team
 participants.
The unconference was hosted by Chittagong campus of Independent
 University,
Bangladesh. You can see the some of the images of the events in the
 Commons
 category [4].

Because of the presence of the popular public figures and government
officials, the event got a significant amount of media coverage in
 national
print and electronic media. We also even had billboards in the city's
 main
crossings to let people know about Bangla Wikipedia which was the main
purpose of this event and current strategic priority of Wikimedia
 Bangladesh.

Wikimedia Bangladesh wants to thank everyone who supported us. We want
 to
thank our sponsors and donors who helped us to arrange this big event.
 We
want thank Wikimedia Foundation director Sue Gardner for her nice video
speech that we screened in the inaugural ceremony. And of course to our
participants, who eventually made this effort a success. And I
 apologize to
let you guys know about this event in late. We are still working on
 putting
 everything on wiki.

2012-03-10 Thread Adethya Sudarsanan
Dear All,

If you guys won't think I am repeating a similar incident like Deba and
Sri, i had a similar experience too...

After our WikiConference @ Mumbai, I traveled on Kingfisher flight back to
my place (Chennai, I am from Chennai btw). I am usually a last minute guy..
so I went to the airport pretty early and i was given access to the Lounge.
When I was looking through the pics taken during our conference, a middle
aged biz man asked me if I attended the conference... I said yes.. and he
told me tht he wanted to come.. but cudn make it cos of his work... I was
not wearing wiki T shirt, but i pinned the Wikipedia badge given by Ashwin
Baindur on to my t-shirt.

he was very eager and asked if I can share what al happened I walked
him thro th entire conference and he wanted to know what exactly we guys
did... so i took the liberty of tellin our editing stuffs in a nut shell

he took serious interest in the initiative...and as luck would have it. we
were on th same flight... and had a few editing session inside th lounge..

i felt happy tht i was able 2 contribute 2 our cause.!!

Thanks,
Ade.

Hello,

I suggest that we conduct WikiConference India 2012 @ some place on the
east coast of India. Considering that WikiConference India 2011 was held @
West Coast (Mumbai), we can plan something in Orissa, West Bengal, Andra
Pradesh , Tamil Nadu.

We can also have it like 2011 was in Bombay (notice B), 2012 can be in
Calcutta (notice C), 2013 can be in Delhi (notice D) like B, C,D
alphabetical order. I know A is missing... we can have sometime in
Ahmedabad or Assam

It will be like we are following a fashion in organizaing events.
Just my opinion.

Open for suggestions.

  +1 to Pranav.

Pranav's text serves to remind us why an annual WikiConference India
is a good idea. Now that we are mostly no longer thinking of Wikimania
2013, it is time to begin thinking of WikiConference 2012.

Can cities other than Mumbai Pune please start considering on this
issue as to whether they have the whereall for this event? We would
naturally hope that cities having existing large community setups such
  as Bangalore may please consider.

Naturally, we may chose to do it simpler and easier than last year but
if it is happen at all in this year, then by the end of February, a
city community should volunteer. Else it may be difficult to do if
  there is a later start.

There is also a school of thought which feels that even WikiConference
India should be once in two years.

  What are your thoughts?

Workshops and Academies have been held (or are being planned) in the
 last
couple of months, COTM has been revived on en.wiki. Several people who
 came
as attendees are now active members of the community. These are just
 some of
the major happenings - When we came up with the idea, we never
 imagined this
sort of impact. Each community seems to have taken a leaf out of
 anothers

 with
one another. WCI was ridden with mistakes and severly short on

hey - it was our first attempt at anything like this and Im sure we

On the other hand, there need to be resources available to do it all

 feels it
can take it up, yes they should go ahead with another version in 2012
 as
hosting it on an annual basis will only take the event to the next
 level and
give us exposure that no local event can give.

The only advice I can give to communities interested, dont think
 holding it

 with
them, be prepared to work your ass off (literally, 16 to 18 hours a
 day, 7

 people
who can give atleast 5 hours a week to begin with and 10 hours a week
 in the
last couple of months and be ready to face the worst with a brave face.

We will soon be coming out with our report on WCI 2011 and hope that it
would help future organisers of similar events in their endevours.

Dear All,

It almost took me quite sometime to go through the mailers above.

I honestly go by what Ashwin says. I pretty much understand that India,
needs more local events to establish itself inside the country and then we
can aim to bring in Wikimania's.

If I may make a suggestion, I would like to say that, in future, the events
we organize can be aimed to conduct a Wikimania in India soil. Lets all
together aspire to create events which will ultimately make us ready to
organize a Wikimania in India.

I suggest we pitch in some SME (Subject Matter Experts) from different
industries and try to involve them in working with wikipedia as editors.
For E.g. we can have some one from IT companies to work on the technical
content placed in Wikipedia.. similarly ppl from varied industries can
involve themselves... we can also conduct local events centralized with the
industries... by doing so, we get more volunteers to participate and help
in team building :) in a year or two, this practice will make us sufficient
enough to conduct Wikimania's

Lets make Wikimania as an ultimate destination to reach and the local
events we organize (like GLAM, Workshops) etc can be minor milestones we
wish to reach.

Regards,
Ade.

Thanks Pradeep for telling us that the bid was a placeholder bid. I
was not aware of that. Placing the placeholder was indeed a good
action, though of course, it would have been better if wider publicity
of placeholder being placed were given.

I'm personally happy to see Mumbai opting to build up local community
activities which it missed out last year due to their full and
tremendous commitment to WikiConference 2011. Mumbai Community has
been doing great events and they have a wonderful line up including
 GLAM.

I'm of the opinion that the Delhi bid be discarded prima facie and as
Mumbai has clarified its stance, Arjuna Rao Chawala, as Chapter head
may like to confirm India's non-participation in contesting for
 hosting Wikimania 2013.

Of course, if there are dissenting opinions please pitch in right away
as it may seem that I'm trying to rush through with this issue, which
 is not the case.

 Hi folks,

My sincere apologies for the late writeup.

The 36th Bangalore Wiki Meetup was organized on 14 Aug 2011 at CIS,
Bengaluru and attended by 8 Wikipedians.

 Talks

 *Shiju*

Shiju was formally greeted by the Bangalore community for being appointed
as a consultant by the foundation for Indic initiatives. He shared his
experience in Wikimania-2011, Hafia, Israel, how he interacted with the
attendees over there, the motivation and interest and also the growth
perspectives which could also be part of his initiatives in the coming days.
He spoke about the discussions held over.

 *Hisham*

Hisham has explained about the tidbits of the Pune pilot program to the
Bangalore community, the details of the outreach movement and its outcome.
He also explained about the mobo initiatives of the foundation to make
Wikipedia available for handheld mobile devices. Indic initiatives would be
one of the other prime focus of the foundation in terms of facilitating the
growth of Indian Wikipedias. Wikipedias of The Netherlands and Germany might
be used as a helping entity where the substantial growth and the strategy
lying therein would also help program new plans for Indian as well as
English Wikipedia in India. He also spoke about GLAM, successful initiatives
in several museums in the UK and how the same strategies could be applied
here to guide people to contribute more for Wikipedia. Hisham also talked
about distribution of 90,000 laptops in Government schools in Assam and
helping the students use and contribute for Wikipedia. He showed the glimpse
of Pune programs, how Nikhil from the Pune community visited school to
school to bring out an active mass for the pilot program. He also mentioned
the statistics of the Pune how 20 Campus ambassadors with the guidance of
100 teachers brought out thousands of articles.

 *Nitika*

Hisham introduced Nitika to the Bangalore community. She then was greeted
by the community and talked briefly about her new position, the motivation
 and participation and interests.

 *Doscussions:*

 *Srikanth R.*

Srikanth spoke about the geo-tagging in commons, explained how it would
help to locate places in off and in-Wiki, demonstrated photo upload in
Commons and spoke about the benefits of uploading high quality photos in
Commons with the commercial tags attached by the photographer as most
photographers about their photos uploaded in Commons can never be sold by
 them.

EC president Arjuna interacted about the chapter and its coordination with
the community where Arun had interaction with the other members.

 Dear All:

We have instituted a monthly call between the India Chapter and the
Wikimedia Foundation. Members of the Chapter EC, Hisham and Asaf Bartov
(who heads up Global South Relationships at the Foundation) will
 participate
in this call. The objective of the call is to share information and
 improve
collaboration between the Chapter and the Foundation on various Wikimedia
projects of relevance to India. We had the first one on Aug 24, 2011, and
 here's a quick update.

 *Chapter Update*

- 30 persons attended the workshop on Copyright and Open Licensing
conducted on 30th July 2011 in Bangalore, which was well received.

 http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Events/Copyright_and_Open_Licensing_SeminarPlan
- Plan to conduct 1st WikiAcademy with the Department of Public
Libraries, Karnataka for their senior Library professionals on 12 Sep
 2011.
- Membership currently stands at ~80
- Participation from community on some projects but the response is
below expectations. Chapter hopes that the response will improve as
 more
activities are taken up by Chapter in the near future.
- AGM will be conducted on September 24 2011. Elections process
for EC vacancies has been initiated.
- Process for applying for FCRA prior permission has been actioned
with necessary steps being taken with local banks, consultants and the
 WMF.
The bank account required for FCRA is ready. The draft of letter from
 WMF
will be finalized in a week by Chapter Accountant and Advisor (another
prerequisite) and then FCRA application will be submitted. 3-4 months
 are
required for approval by Home Ministry, Government of India.

 *Foundation Update*

- Education Program is doing well from a numbers perspective - with
more than 1000 students involved. However, there is a great deal of
 effort
required to continue to support and enable and motivate these students.
Additional Campus Ambassadors are being selected from the participating
institutions. Hisham requested that everyone reach out and be
 encouraging
to the Campus Ambassadors, students and teachers.
- 2 new staff members selected; Nitika has joined Shiju will be
joining by October
- Initial conversations were being sought with leading mobile
companies to explore Wikipedia on mobile
- Independent public trust to be set up hopefully by next week,
followed by FCRA prior permission and other approvals required for tax
exemption, etc.

 *Collaboration on future projects*

Some requests from colleges to participate in campus ambassador
like program were received by the chapter and Hisham. Hisham said that
 till
the ongoing program is stable, he will not be able to roll it to other
cities. He suggested that colleges can get started by forming student
clubs and Foundation staff are providing necessary information and
assistance for the same. He also requested Chapter EC to extend their
 support for the same.

 Chapter seeks active involvement
