Hi,

Another guidelines page here: http://www.plug.org.in/mailing-list
And (supposed to be) the master of them all is here:
http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html

I am afraid that these are from the FOSS world and with FOSS context.
Take it or leave it.

hi,

I think it is broad enough in its current form to serve as a begining.
Let's share it here and request comments from the list and other
administrators before finalising?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Mailing list Guidelines

2012-01-04 Thread Ashwin Baindur
I think Srikanth's list is quite an acceptable list of guidelines.

A list exists for the purpose of discussion. Theoretically every Wikipedian
subscribed to this list can respond to every thread and start a thread of
their own everyday. Should this happen, our discussions would rise in
magnitude astronomically I think.

For those who feel "that the list is becoming pointless due to the volume
of mails and quality of threads", the option remains to voluntarily
unsubscribe.

Alternatively, please start an interesting and pointful thread of your own.
But then I will be the lodestone to decide whether it is indeed
qualititatively

Any topic relevant to the broad Wikimedian community not having a list of
its own can be discussed. In addition, announcements, requests to
participate in polls, or issues on other lists may also be featured.

What is NOT acceptable are completely offtopic issues such as those
outlined in Srikath's guidelines.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

This is a fairly contentious topic. Those guidelines for IRC aren't really
as enforceable, it is usually the ops who decide on case-by-case basis. We
have to conform to certain guidelines because of Freenode as well, the
service provider, mailing lists don't have that.

The guidelines are usually for list moderators. While I won't suggest a
heavy handed approach to this, certain guidelines were formed years ago for
lists, like a monthly soft-limit of 30 posts by a single person. They
really weren't enforced.

I'm all for controlling the traffic on this list Srikanth, but this is not
an easy thing to do with just drafting guidelines.

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC/Guidelines has some related points which
can be used by us too. Lets be inspiration for others :P . Frankly list
needing to have guidelines mean that we haven't used it to optimal level or
there are large influx of newbies on list. (Others might not need since
they already use optimally / may not have too many newbies like us)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Mailing list Guidelines

2012-01-04 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hi all,

Off late the traffic to India list has gone up much more than what it was
before (already a highly active list!). During the last couple of months,
we moderators have got requests from members that the list is becoming
pointless due to the volume of mails and quality of threads. I propose,
together we all write down some list guidelines and follow them to make the
list more productive. New members will be sent this guideline when they
join the list.

Please feel free to help out by making the list guidelines[1] (Which is a
very rough draft now)
